"1879. "The Mississippi Plan." 1880. The States. A weekly newspaper published at Okolona, Mississippi ... as a representative of the southern democracy, it speaks its sentiments in words as hard as musket-balls. A. Y. Harper and W. H. Kernan, editors..."

"Okolona, Miss.", 1879. "Large folio broadside, approx 25" x 16", large bold ornamental type; the poem "Southland" centered within 6 columns of dense text; a few short breats at the folds, else very good. An annual subscription advertisement for 1879/1880 to The States, an ultra-extremist journal that advocated for the unreconstructed South: "Our platform: state's rights, including secession as an incident; the unconditional repeal of tye XIV and XV Amendments; and the restoration of te planter-republic of the fathers." The paper was founded in 1872 by two men, one an ex-Confederate officer, the other, Kernan, a northern journalist and poet with deep Southern sympathies. By this time, thanks to Kernan, it had become a leading voice for the "Mississippi Plan," feature here in the masthead, which was sworn to obliterate the 14th and 15th amendments. Harper gets top billing, but it was Kernan who gave the paper its notoriety. Kernan (1845-1905) would have been a leading Copperhead were he old enough at the time. As it was he turned to journalism after graduating from the University of Michigan Law School, taking charge of states-rights Democratic papers in Ohio and Indiana. Deeply sympathetic to the South, he followed his passion and relocated in 1875 to Mississippi where he took charge of The States. "That prodigy of Southern journalism, under the magical utterances of his pen, displayed a boldness and intensity of expression perhaps...never excelled by any American paper. It was the subject of grave discussion in Congress...No such flaming meteor ever blazed across the political heavens...In a short period this hitherto obscure village journal ran up to more than ten thousand circulation." (Clymer). Kernan left the paper around this time and in late 1880 started a paper in Memphis, The Solid South. Kernan was also a serious and versatile poet. His 16-stanza poem, "The Southland" is printed here side-by-side with Jefferson Davis's speech to the Mississippi Press convention in 1879, "Let the Bastard Democratic Traitors Take Notice," printed in a column headed "Our President." Kernan's poetry was collected and published in a 270-page book, The Flaming Meteor: poetical works of Will Hubbard Kernan..., in 1892, by Charles Kerr in Chicago, with a long biographical introduction by John R. Clymer, who describes Kernan as a "fierce, scathing, sarcastic political writer." As for his poetry: "After Edgar Allen Poe, the most brilliant poetic genius this country has produced...It is only by reason of his pronounced Southern principles that he has been ignored by the literati of Boston and New York..." We leave it to others to decide. But Clymer was not alone. Harris Dickson, a popular Southern author, wrote in "An Appreciation" of Kernan published in the Bookman, Jan. 1915, pp. 522-524, that "Few men have spoken their sentiments in verse 'so hot and hissing as a musket ball upon the wing.' No poet of any era has ever grovelled more deeply in the abyss of pessimism and then proven himself capable of rising to super heights of exaltation..." Not in OCLC which lists a similar 1880/1881 broadside with more or less the same text at New York Historical Society."

Opinion of the Continental Press on Michael Munkácsy. And his Picture of "Milton Dictating Paradise Lost to His Daughters". Presented to the Lenox Library, by Robert Lenox Kennedy, Esq. Now on Exhibition there

Published by Chas. Sedelmeyer, Dealer in Works of Art, Paris 1879 - First edition. Text in English and French. The original printed title, that refers to a London exhibition, crossed in pen and the details of the Lenox Library show written in hand, both on cover and title page. In publisher's printed blue wrappers. 100 p., and 1 plate frontispiece (aquaforte portrait of Munkácsy by Charles Courtry). First edition of the exhibition brochure for Munkácsy's painting "The Blind Milton Dictating Paradise Lost to his Daughters" (1878). This historical genre picture marked a milestone in Munkácsy's oeuvre. It has been exhibited at the Paris World's Fair in 1878 where it was bought by the art dealer, Charles Sedelmeyer, who could soon resell it for a huge profit. After this deal Sedelmeyer offered a ten-years contract to Munkácsy, and made him a wealthy man and a well established member of the Paris art world. Sedelmayer exhibited the picture in several European cities, among them in London, where this brochure accompanied the show. The painting was sold to the American collector, Robert Lenox Kennedy, who exhibited it in New York at the Lenox Library. Today, it hangs in the New York Public Library, which was established in part through the Lenox family's generosity. Mihály Munkácsy (1844-1900) was a Hungarian painter who lived in France and earned international reputation with his large scale genre pictures. The engraved plate slightly chipped at edges, no effect on the image. Pages yellowed due to ageing, they became fragile and some corners are worn, with no effect on text. Ex collection and duplicate stamps, blind stamp of the New York Public Library on title page. Cover and endpapers artistically restored. Overall in fine condition. In publisher's printed blue wrappers First edition. Text in English and French. The original printed title, that refers to a London exhibition, crossed in pen and the details of the Lenox Library show written in hand, both on cover and title page.         Die Urzelle. Nebst dem Beweis, dass Granit, Gneiss, Serpentin, Talk, gewisse Sandsteine, auch Basalt, endlich Meteorstein und Meteoreisen aus Pflanzen bestehen: Die Entwicklungslehre durch Thatsachen neu begründet.

Tübingen, Laupp 1879.. Mit 30 lithograph. Tafeln. VII, 71 S. Lwd. d. Zt. Darwin on Dr. Hahn`s discovery of fossil organisms in meteorits"). What a wonderful discovery!" Insgesamt recht gutes Exemplar!

Unveiling of the Cook Statue [with] Scrapbook of material relating to statues of Captain Cook

Sydney: Thomas Richards, 1879. Tall octavo, 6 pp., frontispiece, a little foxed; bound in the original black morocco binding, highly decorated in gilt [with] tall octavo scrapbook, circa 1960s, including various pieces (see below); preserved in a matching slipcase. Small collection of material relating to statues of Captain Cook, and especially Thomas Woolner's statue of Cook in Hyde Park, Sydney. Included is the rare original programme (with the bookplate of Henry White) for the unveiling of Woolner's statue, which has a transcript of Governor Sir Hercules Robinson's speech, together with a description of the proceedings. The programme is accompanied by a scrapbook of material apparently compiled during the 1960s by the historian Geoffrey Ingleton, which who not only had an enduring interest in early Australian history, but also took particular notice of statues of Cook: a collection of ephemera he gathered pertaining to Captain Thomas Watson, now in the State Library of New South Wales, also includes material relating to the Woolner statue. The scrapbook includes a selection of interesting pieces on statues of Cook, with an early carte de visite photograph and two twentieth-century photographs of the statue in Hyde Park, as well as newspaper material relating to Woolner's statue and the statue of Cook in Randwick, and a photograph of a third Cook statue in the Winter Garden at Sefton Park in Liverpool. There are also three autograph letters from the Cook biographer Arthur Kitson relating to the design of Sir Thomas Brock's statue of Captain Cook on the west side of Admiralty Arch in The Mall, London. One letter is addressed to the naval historian Commander C.N. Robinson, and as all three are on the subject of Cook's uniform, presumably they form part of Kitson's correspondence with Robinson.

Gauthier-Villars, Paris 1879 - 8vo (224 x 139 mm). xxiv, 156 pp., text illustrations and two engraved plates by Felizat. Original printed wrappers bound in. Fine cherry-colour full morocco binding by Canape.R.D dated 1926, spine with 5 raised bands gilt-lettered in first compartment, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, morocco turn-ins with gilt-ruled borders. Provenance: Victor Hugo. Carte de visite by Louis Pasteur and small portrait photograph sticked to second blank leaf. ---- Norman 1660; Cushing P142; Heirs of Hippocrates 1900; Osler 1552. - FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY PASTEUR on the half-title: "A monsieur Victor Hugo, de l'Academie francaise, Hommage de profond respect, L. Pasteur." A rare instance, linking two of the greatest French men of the 19th century: one of the founders of modern medicine, Louis Pasteur, and the literary giant Victor Hugo, author of Les misérables or Hunchback of Notre-Dame. Louis Pasteur arguably was a great admirer of Victor Hugo. In a manuscript dated February 7, 1885, just a few months before the death of the great poet, he writes: "L'enfant sublime, comme l'a nomme Chateaubriand, a merite d'etre appele le sublime vieillard. Devant cette glorieuse longevite, la France donne un beau spectacle. Son acclamation est un cri de patriotisme." Whereas Victor Hugo was elected a member of the Academie francaise on January 7, 1841 at the age of just 39, Pasteur became a member of this academy rather late, on December 8, 1881, a few days before his 60th birthday. The academy was an exclusive society made up of 40 of France's most important people. We know of at least one other copy of this book containing a dedication by Pasteur to a member of the Academie, Émile Littré, with an almost identical wording: "A monsieur Littre, de l'Academie francaise, Hommage de profond respect, L. Pasteur." Could it be possible that Pasteur presented copies of his book to members of the Academie to gain support for his election campaign? Regarding the book itself, Pierre Bertholet, an opponent of Pasteur's controversial theory of fermentation, published a posthumous and unauthorized version of some notes by Claude Bernard, a supporter of Pasteur's, which claimed to have isolated a soluble chemical produced by yeast that caused fermentation, in contrast to Pasteur's theory. Pasteur's bitter reply strengthened his conviction that fermentation was life without air, a belief he held until Eduard Buchner isolated a soluble alcoholic ferment in 1897. ¶ DSB IX. p.58 "A key figure in the French school of crystallography and a bridge from Bravais to Friedel, Mallard was described as having ... definitely displaced the center of gravity of crystallography that, thereafter, could not be cultivated as a descriptive science, but was elevated to the rank of rational science"

Rachel behauptet ein Treffen Hahns mit Charles Darwin ("Mr. Darwin on Dr. Hahn`s discovery of fossil organisms in meteorits"). What a wonderful discovery!" Insgesamt recht gutes Exemplar! Bücher de

THE UTE WAR: A HISTORY OF THE WHITE RIVER MASSACRE AND THE PRIVATIONS AND HARDSHIPS OF THE CAPTIVE WHITE WOMEN AMONG THE HOSTILES ON GRAND RIVER

Denver, 1879. 192pp. With woodcut portraits. Modern brown morocco, spine gilt. Without the original printed wrappers and advertisements. Small chip in fore edge of titlepage, else internally clean. A very good copy. The primary contemporary account of the events which led up to the removal of the Ute Indians from their lands west of the 107th meridian. By the late 1870s most of the Indians of Colorado had been removed, with the exception of the Utes, who retained certain portions of their lands through the treaties of 1868 and 1873. White land hunger still remained avid, and in 1879 conflict broke out at the White River Agency where, under the direction of Agent Nathan Meeker, tensions had been especially high. After Meeker ordered the plowing of the Indians' race track, a number of Utes left their reservation. Troops were ordered in from Wyoming and were ambushed en route, the agency was attacked, Meeker and eleven men were killed, and five women were abducted, including Meeker's wife and child. After their rescue, the women related tales of horror about their period of bondage, and pressure for Ute removal increased. In 1880 a new treaty ceded most of the Ute lands, and most of the members of the tribes were sent to desolate regions of Utah. "After Hollister...the rarest Colorado imprint" - Howes. Edward Eberstadt writes, based on Dawson's statement, that probably less than a dozen copies of this rarity survive. Apparently the book was used as cartridge wadding by troops during an Indian uprising. In later life Dawson became curator of the Colorado Historical Society.         George Cruikshank: the artist, the humorist, and the man, with some account of his brother Robert.

Birmingham: Houghton and Hammond; for Houlston and Sons, London,, 1879. A Critico-Bibliographical Essay. With numerous illustrations by G. Cruikshank including several from original drawings in the possession of the author. Second edition, Revised; and Augmented by a copiously Annotated Bibliographical Appendix, and Additional Plates on India Paper. Quarto (274 x 220 mm). Contemporary red morocco gilt by Henry Young and Sons of Liverpool, spine gilt in compartments, boards with central gilt motif within outer three line gilt frame, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Extra-illustrated with etchings, coloured caricatures, engraved plates, woodcuts, and autograph materials, together 116 items. Bookplate removed from front pastedown. A fine copy. First published the previous year, this is a book that cries out to be extra-illustrated; the published text has 24 uncoloured illustrations in the text, including vignettes, and these do not capture the real flavour of Cruikshank's work. This copy has been thoroughly grangerized by the addition of 116 extra illustrations and autograph material, comprising 82 etchings, caricatures, engraved plates, illustrated title pages, and broadsides by George Cruikshank, of which 24 are hand-coloured, mounted and captioned in pencil; together with an autograph signature, dated 1 February 1860, with sketches, and two autograph letters signed (to S. C. Hall, 23 Aug 1875 and 27 Mar 1875, the latter signed by GC, otherwise in his wife's hand). There is also a woodcut portrait of Cruikshank and Ainsworth seated in a library by an unknown artist, and 32 other pieces by his contemporaries, including 3 plates by Robert Cruikshank, 4 woodcuts by Percy Cruikshank, 10 engravings (6 coloured) by Rowlandson; 3 coloured caricatures by Gillray; and illustrations by Thackeray, Kenny Meadows, J. Franklin, Tony Johannot, Birrell, Alfred Crowquill, Barlow after Hogarth, Alken, Leech, and Seymour.

Notes by a Naturalist on the "Challenger" being an Account of Various Observations made during the Voyage of H.M.S. "Challenger" Round the World, in the Years 1872-76.

Macmillan,, London: 1879 - A fine description of zoology and botany, most in the Southern Hemisphere and Antarctic. Also visits Tristan Da Cunha, Kerguelen Land, the Falklands, Juan Fernandez, Hawaii, Tahiti, Fiji & Cape York, Queensland. Spence 820. The Challenger Expedition was a massive scientific undertaking sponsored by the Royal Society to discover "everything about the sea". She was the first steam-driven ship to enter the Antarctic Circle. The expedition founded the modern science of oceanography, taking a daily chain of magnetic observations round the world, established 362 observation stations. At most of these, the depth was sounded, the sea dredged and samples of the seabed, as well as water samples and temperatures at intermediate levels, were taken. Atmospheric and meteorological observations were made and the rate and direction of the current measured. Thousands of new species of marine life were discovered. The British Library records only the 1892 edition. 'Of all his writings, Moseley's Notes of a Naturalist on the Challenger, is the one that appeals to the widest circle of readers and approaches Darwin's Journal of the Cruise of the Beagle in interest and importance' [DNB]. The work is dedicated to Charles Darwin. 8vo, xvi, 620pp, 2 colored plates, color folding map of the world showing ocean soundings. Fine binding signed by Mudie, with his stamp. Half dark blue calf and marbled boards. Gilt decorated spine, raised bands, gilt title at red calf label. One small abrasion at spine. Private library stamp at title and a few other leaves. In 1082, the Byzantine emperor granted Venice trading rights throughout imperial territory, a decree issued largely in recognition of the city state's growing influence; Venetian merchants became the dominant European force in the Levant throughout the Middle Ages, conducting a thriving trade with the Mamluk dynasty, who ruled from Cairo with Alexandria as their commercial centre, and increasingly the Ottomans, who would eventually conquer the Mamluks in 1517. Together with Karl Hopf's Geschichte Griechenlands vom Beginn des Mittelalters, Heyd's monograph "firmly established the ascendancy of German scholarship in medieval Greek history" (Lock, The Franks in the Aegean 1204-1500, p. 30). A French version entitled "Histoire du commerce du Levant au moyen-âge" with numerous additions by the author, was published in Leipzig in 1885. Scarce in commerce.

Contemporary brown morocco, spines in six compartments with gilt lines and lettering. First edition. "A sumptuous monograph of the birds of Central America" (Zimmer II, p. 542). It forms the complete ornithological section of the 'Biologia Centrali-Americana' by Godman and Salvin published in 57 volumes. "The material on which the work is based was mostly secured by the auhors during several visits to Central America. The large collection thus acquired by collection and purchase they represented to the British Museum at South Kensington (more than 55,000 specimens). The work deals with 1413 species representing 78 families and 539 genera" (Anker 437). The fine plates are outstanding representatives of Keulemans's bird art."The great value of Keuleman's work as an ornithological draughtsman lay in the sureness of design of the plate and his accuracy in portraying the birds themselves. The bird figures were carefully drawn and executed down to the last scales on the feet. The feathering was neatly delineated with different plumes receiving sympatic treatment, the fine soft underplumage and the large flight feathers being equally well drawn" (Jackson, Bird Illustrators p. 90). First combined edition. "The Haunted Hotel" was published as a magazine serial in BELGRAVIA from June through November 1878. "In many respects this is Collins's last sustained work. The detective element is clever; the story embodies the full development and complexity which were Collins's forte; and the psychology of the countess and her relationship with Fate are excellent. The supernatural aspects, however, are pedestrian." - Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 411. "My Lady's Money" was published as the 1877 Christmas number of the ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS. A rare find for any Greenaway or Victoriana collector. 12 1/2 x 18 inches. Kate Greenaway (Catherine Greenaway) Born London, March 17, 1846 - Died November 6, 1901 Kate Greenaway (often spelt incorrectly as Kate Greenway) was an English artist and illustrator/writer of children's book, cards, calendars and much more. Her subjects mainly consisted of children, young girls, flowers and landscapes. She was the daughter of John Greenaway a well-known draughtsman and engraver on wood. Kate completed a course at Heatherleys life classes and the Slade School in South Kensington. It was soon after completing these studies in 1868 that she started to exhibit watercolor drawings at the Dudley Gallery in London. By 1877 her drawings at Dudley Gallery were selling for 54 pounds. In 1868 she also started to design greeting cards for Marcus Ward. Over the years many of these were also used for calendar and book illustrations. During the period from 1868 to 1878 some of the cards were registered at Stationers' Hall but not in her name. The first recorded design at Stationers' Hall in her name was in 1879. By this stage she had also been working for other publishers such as Goodall. --- from kate greenaway cards site
