The Illustrated London News. January to December 1879.

George C. Leighton. London. 1879. - Two three-quarter leather bound volumes, 16 x 12 inches; January--June 620 pp; July--December 612 pp; index at front of each volume. Tipped-in centerfold illustrations. A number of newspapers have the term "Foreign Postage" printed beside the masthead on the front page. Also, a number of issues have a circular stamp about one inch in diameter identifying US library ownership and a date of acquisition. Volume One The January to June volume is tightly bound with contents in good condition, save for damage to two color plates. Of considerable interest in an ongoing illustrated series titled Rise and Progress of Illustrated Journalism, which documents origins in the early 1600s. There is extensive coverage of the Anglo-Zulu War (1879) and the concluding months of the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-1880). Also, coverage of events that anticipate the first Boer War (1880). There are many double-page illustrations associated with the Zulu and Afghan Wars by artists such R. C. Woodville and Overend; one a massive fold-out pertaining to the Afghan conflict on sheet size 22 1/4 x 30 inches (tear in margin enters image 1 1/2 inches). Other illustrations depict examples of the Electric Light; Her Majesty's trip to Italy; the University Boat Race; Chinese Fortune Teller; the Dutch Arctic Expedition; Pitcairn Island; and much more. An exceptional volume dealing extensively with British military engagements in far-flung regions of the world, enhanced with exceptionally fine illustrations. Volume overall in very good condition, with tears to some pages. Volume Two The July to December volume are tightly bound with contents in good condition, save for damage to a color plate in the Christmas Number ("The Darling's Better") by Miss Edwards and another color plate ("Views on the Rhine") in the August 23 Supplement. In very good condition is the double-page "Christmas at Little Peopleton Manor" by Kate Greenaway and two other single-page color plates. There is also a full-page black and white Greenaway, "The Juvenile Christmas Party," in very good condition, and a full-page black and white F. Bernard illustration of Dickens' "Mr. Pickwick." The six month collection of weekly issues and numerous supplements places great textual and pictorial emphasis on the Zulu war in Africa (1879) and the second Anglo-Afghan War in Afghanistan (1878-1880). Greatest emphasis is placed on reportage relating to the Zulu war, with numerous double-page illustrations recording the major battles between the British and the Zulu whose King, Cetewayo, was ultimately forced to surrender. One of the most impressive of these illustrations is the black and white "March to Ulundi," which unfolds to 13 1/4 x 41 inches. Afghan illustrations depict Cabul, Candahar, Afghan military, and various military engagements. Other illustrations include the "new steam-ship Orient," which operated on the UK-Australia route; yacht racing; two pages depicting the premises of the Illustrated London News in London; new machinery featured at the Royal Agricultural Society's International Exhibition; Coursing; Irish Sketches; Sketches of Gypsy Life; Torpedo Warfare; Eddystone Lighthouse; an illustration showing recent inventions which include Edison's telephone; and much more.         [FIRST RUSSIAN CRITIQUE OF PRACTICAL REASON] Kritika prakticheskogo razuma i osnovopolozheniye k metafizike nravov / polnyi perevod s primechaniyami i prilozheniyem Kratkogo ocherka prakticheskoi filosofii sost. N. Smirnov [i.e. Critique of Practical Reason]

St. Petersburg: tip. A. Transhelya, 1879. XVIII, 110, 192, [3] pp. 20х14 cm. Contemporary half leather with faded gilt-lettering on the spine. Original covers are preserved. Rubbed, private library ink stamps on the front pastedown, cover and last page, Soviet bookshop's stamp on the title page, owner's markings in text. Otherwise a very good copy. The first Russian translation of the most important work by Immanuel Kant (first originally published almost a century ago in 1788). In Russia Kant was an important figure, and attitude towards his philosophy work was complicated and ambiguous. With the development of high education different approaches to interpretation of Kant's philosophy have shaped. Perception of his work was particular for every town - Moscow, Kiev, St. Petersburg, Kharkiv. Kant's philosophy was spreading in waves (three overall), for example, at first it was introduced by professors Melman and Schaden in Moscow University who actively started to promote it; Karamzin published kind reviews, and finally first translations were printed («Osnovopolozheniye k metafizike nravov», Moscow, 1803; translated from German by Yakov Ruban). The first printed reference to Kant in Russia was made in 1790 by Melman (in Latin), and the first mention in Russian was made by Karamzin in 1791 (it was a letter about meeting the philosopher). All this together with Kant's election to the Academy of Sciences in 1794 was the start of Russian Kantianism. His name was so well known in Russia that Russian diplomats and travelers were deliberately seeking his reception. His ideas were popular among professors promoting them in universities (Melman, Shad, Finke etc.). It is known that even clerics were using handwritten translations in theological academies. So in the very beginning of 19th century there were made a few translations, most of them were low-grade because the source for translations was secondary or (and) in other than German languages. But even these bad translations disappeared for a few decades, and only in the second half of the century new professional translations (like this) were made. Decrease of Kantianism can explain such situation (the decrease itself was probably caused by the spread of materialism and positivism).

1879. Court Brief Relating to the Grand Canyon War [Trial]. Bass, Lyman K. [1836-1889]. In the Circuit Court of the United States, District of Colorado. The Pueblo and Arkansas Valley Railroad Company vs. the Denver and Rio Grande Railway Company. No. 155. Defendant's Brief of Evidence on Supplemental Bill. Lyman K. Bass, Solicitor for Defendant [Caption docket title to rear printed wrapper]. [Denver?]. Late December, 1879]. [ii], 3-51, [1] pp. Octavo (9" x 6"). Stab-stitched pamphlet, pink publisher half-wrapper with docket title printed on left side of back cover. Light soiling to exterior, minor edgewear, vertical center fold. A well-preserved copy. * Likely the only printing. Lyman Kidder Bass had been a Buffalo, New York attorney and was Grover Cleveland's law partner. Bass's brief on behalf of the Denver and Rio Grande Railway Company was filed with the U.S. Circuit Court in Colorado in late December 1879, subsequent to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in favor of the railway company that reversed an injunction against the company's intended route from Denver to Leadville. Both railroads sought dominance to monopolize the right of way through the Grand Canyon of the Arkansas River. The "War" was not limited to the courts; it involved violence between "armies" of the railroad laborers and townsfolk. Despite the ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court, new issues were raised by a supplemental bill in December 1879 opposing the Denver and Rio Grande Company to which Bass responds here. On the 13th day of May the opinion and mandates of the Supreme Court were filed in the Circuit Court, and a motion was made for a decree in conformity thereto. After several more rounds of legal action culminating in a January 2, 1880 decision by the Circuit Court for Colorado affirming the Denver and Rio Grand's right of way and the U.S. Supreme Court's an

Approximately 160 composite quartz sand, chalk, and linseed oil blocks in red, limestone and slate gray, in various sizes and shapes, together with three or more sets of building plans, all contained in two wooden boxes with printed Anker-Steinbaukasten labels. A unique and important artifact of his childhood. Einstein spent his childhood building "complicated structures" with these Anker-Steinbaukasten blocks. Accepting his later theory that "Imagination is more important than knowledge," the toys that encouraged his imagination became building blocks for the most important scientific theories of the last millennium. His sister Maja Winteler-Einstein, describing his childhood, recalled that "The games he played . were very characteristic of Albert's capacities. These were mostly puzzles, fretsaw work, the erection of complicated structures with the well-known Anker building blocks, and above all the construction of multi-storied card castles, with which he filled his leisure." ("Beitrag für sein Lebensbild" in The collected papers of Albert Einstein. ed. John Stachel. Volume 1: The early years. 1879-1902. (Princeton University Press, 1987) p.lix. Translated from German.)Based on the work of German educator Friedrich Froebel (who created the concept of kindergarten) these composite stone blocks were a popular toy of the 1880s and 1890s. The blocks were designed to help develop childrens' tactile senses and manual dexterity, and also to stimulate imagination, creativity and three-dimensional perception. Fellow scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer, as well as architects Frank Lloyd Wright and Walter Gropius are among the geniuses who are known to have played with Anker blocks. Provenance: The set had passed by direct descent from Albert Einstein to the consignor from whom we acquired the blocks at Christie's London on July 13, 2016. Condition: A few blocks chipped and worn, with original instructions and boxes worn, soiled and defective.Albert Einstein(1879-1955) was a German-Swiss born theoretical physicist internationally recognized as one of the greatest physicists of all time. He enunciated the general theory of Relativity, with law explaining the relationship between the speed of light and its consequence, the equivalence of mass and energy (E=MC2). For his work in theoretical physics-largely for his 1905 paper on photons and photo-electricity-Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics (announced in November 1922, retroactive for 1921). Working on a unified field theory, he then attempted to explain gravitation and electromagnetism within one set of laws. With the expulsion of Jewish scholars from Germany after Hitler's rise to power, Einstein joined the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey (1933), which became the most celebrated research center in the world. In 1939, he signed a letter written to President Franklin Roosevelt warning him of the possibility of Germany developing a nuclear bomb. He urged the U.S. to begin uranium research, thus beginning the top secret "Manhattan Project." Later, at Princeton, he tried to develop a unified field theory and to refute the accepted interpretation of quantum physics, both unsuccessfully. Einstein received U.S. citizenship in 1940.
