        An International Episode / Harper's Half-Hour Series

Harper & Brothers, Publishers, New York 1879 - A small, hardbound 32mo in the Harper's "Half-Hour Series," grade it "very-good-plus" with some rub to corners and to the head and heel of spine, but still tight enough to close its own boards and text block. Dated 1878 to copyright page and 1879 to title page, while stamping in red ink to bottom of front board reads "copyright 1877, by Harper & Brothers." Nonetheless, this is the first state of the hardcover, with the last line of pg. 44 duplicated to the top of pg. 45. (There was also a version in wraps, which is to say, "softcover," also 1879.) 87 books in the series listed in the preliminary matter, not including this title, which was actually No. 91. Tacked to the FFE is a small and well-preserved piece of newsprint offering a biography of the author and his family ("He is unmarried and lives at present in London," it says, while his brother William James is "one of the instructors in physiology in Harvard College.") 136 pp. followed by 6 pp. publisher's ads. As ever, Cat's Curiosities will be happy to accept credit or debit cards via the ABE Web site card processor for purchase of this book. (Simply click the red buttons "Add to Basket," followed by "Proceed to Basket," followed by "Proceed to checkout," and have your card information handy. Thousands of people manage to do this, securely and successfully, every day.) Alternatively, we'll be equally happy to email a PayPal invoice, and wait up to 36 hours for your PayPal payment. No personal checks accepted; no credit card numbers taken over the phone. And no, we won't fly to your home town to hand-deliver this book to your door, even if "a dealer from Duluth" once did this for you. This book will be dispatched via U.S. Postal Service Priority mail, insured, and we'll pay for the insurance. (Registered mail available at extra cost.) If you don't have a secure mailing address, rent a post office box. It's our book, those are our terms, if you don't like them, shop elsewhere. We're done "putting this book on hold" for supercilious twits who expect us to accede to their every bizarre demand for unorthodox, time-consuming & acrobatic methods of payment and delivery because "that's the way some other dealer used to do it." The "other dealer" went out of business and his store is now a tattoo parlor or a falafel stand; Right? [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1879. 4to. 1 p. An occasional poem written in pencil: "By day when the sun is bright | And also in darkness of night | By candle or light of the moon | I always like to hear your tune | When I for distraction long | After heavy mental labor | Pearces through the wall the song | Of the shello - from my neighbour | And is work upon my mind | As relief of mildest kind | And when in the Eve you play | Goes all pain and care away". - Small tears in foldings.

        Yellow Perch

New York: Scribners, 1879. Colour printed lithograph on original mount. Among the finest 19th century images of American sporting fishSamuel A. Kilbourne, a native of Bridgetown, Maine, was an accomplished painter of natural history subjects when he decided, in 1858, to specialize in painting fish. He was extremely successful and, as the plates in this work testify, very proficient in his work. The Game Fishes... was his greatest accomplishment, and has been described as having 'the most beautiful fish plates published in this country' (Bennett).A reviewer writing in The Century magazine in 1882 wrote of Kilbourne's depictions: "Mr. Kilbourne has succeeded in a difficult task. He has succeeded in uniting in his delineation the accuracy in details of form and coloring required by the naturalist, with that freedom of style, delicacy of handling, and naturalness of surroundings demanded by the artist."The images are portraits in natural habitats mounted on card and suitable for framing, and they both accurate and aesthetically appealing.Bennett, p.65; McGrath, p.196; Litchfield 52; Brun G94; Nissen ZBI 1630; Howell 53-325; BMNH, p.973;Gee, p.91; Westwood & Satchell, Bibliotheca Piscatoria , p.107.

THE UTE WAR: A HISTORY OF THE WHITE RIVER MASSACRE AND THE PRIVATIONS AND HARDSHIPS OF THE CAPTIVE WHITE WOMEN AMONG THE HOSTILES ON GRAND RIVER.

Denver. 1879. - 192pp. With woodcut portraits. Modern brown morocco, spine gilt. Without the original printed wrappers and advertisements. Small chip in fore edge of titlepage, else internally clean. A very good copy. The primary contemporary account of the events which led up to the removal of the Ute Indians from their lands west of the 107th meridian. By the late 1870s most of the Indians of Colorado had been removed, with the exception of the Utes, who retained certain portions of their lands through the treaties of 1868 and 1873. White land hunger still remained avid, and in 1879 conflict broke out at the White River Agency where, under the direction of Agent Nathan Meeker, tensions had been especially high. After Meeker ordered the plowing of the Indians' race track, a number of Utes left their reservation. Troops were ordered in from Wyoming and were ambushed en route, the agency was attacked, Meeker and eleven men were killed, and five women were abducted, including Meeker's wife and child. After their rescue, the women related tales of horror about their period of bondage, and pressure for Ute removal increased. In 1880 a new treaty ceded most of the Ute lands, and most of the members of the tribes were sent to desolate regions of Utah. "After Hollister.the rarest Colorado imprint" - Howes. Edward Eberstadt writes, based on Dawson's statement, that probably less than a dozen copies of this rarity survive. Apparently the book was used as cartridge wadding by troops during an Indian uprising. In later life Dawson became curator of the Colorado Historical Society.         Intermezzo For String Quintet - Copyist Manuscript with Bruckner's Autograph Controlmark

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Autograph controlmark of the composer "ABr." at the conclusion of a copyist manuscript in an unknown hand. 7 pp., on manuscript paper of 18 systems, loose, folio. Titled at the head "Intermezzo. - III. Satz (No 2) (zum Quintett.)" with the composer's name given upper right "Anton Bruckner (Dez. 1879)", tempo indicated "Molto moderato (Sehr mässig)" and dated more precisely "21 Dez. 1879" at the conclusion. Evidently one of the first fair copies of the manuscript, composed in the same year and bearing the elusive control mark in the hand of the influential Austrian composer and organist, from whom any autograph material is extremely rare. Creases, disbound with moderate edge wear, otherwise fine throughout. <br><br><br />Bruckner composed his Quintet For Strings in 1879, between his Fifth and Sixth Symphonies, at the request of the Vienna Conservatory's director, Joseph Hellmesberger, Sr., leader of a celebrated string quartet. Dissatisfied with the work's "curious, elfin scherzo", he asked Bruckner for a replacement and Bruckner then composed this alternative Scherzo, the Intermezzo (WAB 113), in the same key (D minor) as the original and using the same trio section, but with a slower tempo and less technically challenging. The Quintet was nonetheless premiered as Bruckner originally composed it and was one of the few Bruckner works to achieve immediate popular and critical acclaim. The delightful Intermezzo was not publicly premiered until after the composer's death. Although, as reviewer Wayne Reisig remarks, Bruckner "never wrote anything which could be termed 'pops' beyond the Austrian-German border", the Intermezzo might be considered in that genre: it is a "sunny little work saturated with the feel of the Tyrol."

1879 Paperback Wisden, In Very Nice Condition for the year

Hi, This lot is an Original 1879 Wisden Paperback. 16th Edition in Orignal Paperback form as Wisden printed it. In Very Good Condition for the year, The book has not had any restoration but an ex owner has written 1879 to the spine (lettering started in 1887). As with 1878 the covers tend to wear a lot with the new style materials used by Wisden but these covers although some wear , and for a paperback, are nicer than many I have seen. The spine paper is complete but the first two pages are coming away slightly , after that it is tightly bound but some care needed at the front. Very nice inside. A chance to own a rare early paperback. The 1879 rebinds are a lot more common than the first 15 but this is less so in original paperback form in my experience , we havent sold many orignal 1879s since we started. More Photos on request.       Prag, Selbstverlag and F. Rivnác, 1879-1899 [1901?]. Four volumes in four. Folio (34.0 x 25.5 cm). 459 pp., lavishly illustrated with 167 mostly chromolithographed plates (several double-sized or larger, folded), and over 400 text engravings, of which some plate-sized. Volume I (1883): 182 pp., 48 plates (some larger, folded, a few plain), 160 text engravings; volume II (1889): 114 pp., 44 plates (several larger, folded; numbered 49-90, 80b, 81b), 79 text figures (numbered 117-188); vol. III (1895): 132 pp., 42 plates [several (much) larger; numbered 91-132], 122 text engravings (numbered 189-310); vol. IV (1901): 101 pp., full colour frontispiece, of a landscape with "Miriopoden"; 33 plates (numbered 133-165), 64 text engravings (numbered 311-394, and including phototypes of fossil animals and tracks, freshwater bivalves, and, e.g. the author at work). Original uniform brown cloth sumptuously embossed with black floral borders, and gilt vignettes depicting Permian amphibians, reptiles and fish. Marbled edges.l Magnificent and exceedingly rare work by the Czech geologist, palaeontologist, and ornithologist Antonin Fric, or, in German, Anton Fritsch (1832-1913) on the rich Permian and Carboniferous faunas of Bohemia. Fritch was professor of geology at the Polytechnikum in Prague, and founder and member of several natural history societies in Bohemia. ?Professor Antonin Fric ? is considered by many to be the greatest Czech museologist, pedagogue and educationalist of the nineteenth century. He devoted his life to the Czech Museum (Museum of the Czech Kingdom, now the National Museum). From 1855, he was curator of the zoological collections. In 1864, he founded the Geological-Palaeontological Department and from 1871 was Professor at Prague University. In 1880, he was made Director of the Zoological and Palaeontological departments of the Museum. He travelled widely, including to Great Britain, the Mediterranean and the USA. His main works in zoology were monographs on European birds and Czech bats, fish and crustaceans. In palaeontology, he wrote on the stratigraphy and palaeontology of the Czech Upper Cretaceous, Carboniferous and Permian fauna. He also published several important books about the popularisation of geology and palaeontology? (the Edinburgh Geologist, 38). The Fauna der Gaskohle contains the description and fine illustrations of many early vertebrates, notably fish, amphibians, and reptiles, generally described from well-preserved specimens. The last volume deals with invertebrates, including many myriapods, several spiders, some insects, crustaceans, and bivalves. Fritsch introduced many new names, most of which still valid today. Fritsch himself published the work, clearly in low numbers, and over a long period of time, which explains its rarity, especially of complete copies in original bindings. The last volume has 1901 on the title page, but Horn-Schenkling dates it from 1899. The total numbers of text illustrations as given by Fritsch on the title pages, and the actual numbers do not match, because Fritsch also counted figures with a b-number. This set has a label on the front pastedowns stating "Presented to the Imperial College of Science Geology Department from the library of John Walter Gregory [name handwritten] 1934." Gregory (1864-1932) was a British explorer and geologist, perhaps best known for his survey of the Great African Rift Valley. He was the successor of Frederic McCoy as chairman of the Geology Department of the University of Melbourne, Australia. Slight rubbing to joints and spine ends, stamp in the top-margin of the title pages, a few light spots, otherwise a very good, clean set. Extremely rare in a complete state. We know of no auction records in the last 50 years. Only one complete set in modern binding has been listed in an antiquarian catalogue in the last 4 decades. Horn-Schenkling II(2), p. 89; Nissen ZBI, 1438.

History in brief of "Leopard" and "Linden," General Grant's Arabian stallions, presented to him by the Sultan of Turkey in 1879. Also their sons "General Beale," "Hegira," and "Islam," bred by Randolph Huntington. Also reference to the celebrated stallion "Henry Clay". [Philadelphia, PA], J. B. Lippincott Co. for the author, 1885.

1879. Large 4to. 66 pp. With 5 plates. Original giltstamped green cloth. All edges gilt. First edition of this contemporary account of the Arabian stallions presented to General Grant in 1879 by the Sultan of Turkey; "Leopard" went on to achieve eternal fame as the first Arabian stallion to be registered in the stud book of the Arabian Horse Club of America. - During Grant's 1878 state visit to Constantinople, Sultan Abdul Hamid II personally escorted the General through the royal stables, and noting his fondness for horses, presented Grant with two stallions to be shipped back to the United States. The horses fell under the care of the breeder Randolph Huntington, who attempted to derive a new American breed from the Arabians using the old breeders' rule of "out-cross once and breed back by three closely related sources." - Huntington prepared the text of the present work as well as commissioning portraits of the stallions, and dedicated the book the the recently-deceased "General U. S. Grant, and his love for horses." - Occasional chipping as common, still a very good copy from the library of the Virginia Republican newspaperman, lawyer, and federal judge Robert William Hughes (1821-1901) with his bookplate. Hughes, who had known Edgar Allan Poe in Richmond and was particularly close to President Grant, also raised horses, including thoroughbreds registered with the American Jockey Club. Boyd/P. 61.         Die Urzelle. Nebst dem Beweis, dass Granit, Gneiss, Serpentin, Talk, gewisse Sandsteine, auch Basalt, endlich Meteorstein und Meteoreisen aus Pflanzen bestehen: Die Entwicklungslehre durch Thatsachen neu begründet.

Tübingen, Laupp 1879. - Mit 30 lithograph. Tafeln. VII, 71 S. Lwd. d. Zt. Darwin on Dr. Hahn`s discovery of fossil organisms in meteorits"). Angeblich hätte Hahn mit Darwin Gesteinsproben mikroskopisch untersucht - und Darwin wäre von Hahn`s Außerirdischen Theorie überzeugt worden und hätte gerufen: "Almighty God! What a wonderful discovery!" Insgesamt recht gutes Exemplar! [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Slave Trade. No. 1 (1879). Correspondence with British representatives and agents abroad, and reports from Naval Officers, relating to the Slave Trade. Presented to both Houses of Parliament by command of Her Majesty.1879. [C.-2422]. London, Harrison and Sons, 1879.

1879. Folio. XVII, (1), 322 pp. Top edge gilt. Sewn, with remains of former cloth spine. Rare British papers and correspondence with local agents and officers on the slave trade of Egypt, Turkey, Zanzibar, and Arabia. Includes a report on the release of a slave, a Dutch subject, from an Arab Sheikh (p. 263) and the report by Cdr. Powlett from Jeddah concerning the Red Sea slave route: "Within the last month 160 slaves have been landed near Jeddah, from near Cid. It would appear that the authorities, though not exerting themselves to suppress the traffic in slaves, do not permit the law to be too openly infringed: this has raised the price in slaves [...] The Farisian Islands are used to land cargoes of slaves upon, where also they are employed in diving for mother-o'-pearl [...] [Baggalah sailboats] come into Jeddah without there being any trace of what they have done. They have no special fittings, and do not fasten the slaves (who are mostly children) in any way [...] I submit that laws framed to meet the case of slaving vessels making long voyages will be found wanting when applied to the Red Sea traffic" (ibid.). - Other relevant sections are: "Egypt" (pp. 4-50; includes further correspondence relating to the slave traffic in the Red Sea and on the Arabian Peninsula, e.g. "Slave Trade in Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Notes by Assistant Resident at Aden. To communicate to Egyptian Government such information as may be advisable"); "Turkey" (pp. 112-123; includes correspondence relating to the Slave Trade in the Red Sea); "Turkey. (Consular)-Baghdad" (pp. 124-129); "Turkey. (Consular)-Jeddah" (pp. 131-155); "Zanzibar" (pp. 157-253), etc. - Slight edge chipping to first 2 or 3 leaves; removed from the Public Record Office with their stamp to t. p. A good copy.         La Republique de 1879. [France, c. 1880].

1879. Oblong 4to. French ms. on paper. 46 pen-and-ink drawings on plates (numbered 1-48; wants 2, 17, and 18); 2 mounted photo prints. Contemp. half calf with giltstamped cover title "Album". Interesting album containing political caricatures of a high quality, levelled at the state and society of the Third Republic under President Grévy (1879-87). During his term, France underwent strong social and political changes which are immediately reflected in the drawings. Obviously the work of a professional caricaturist, they were probably intended for publication in newspapers and magazines (or may even have been published). Some pictures poke fun at everyday events, others provide a comment on the developments of several months. - Several drawings tipped in; also includes two revised photographs of drawings (a third one is lacking).

ALS ("JBurckhardt"). Basel, 16. VI. 1879.

1879. Large 8vo. 3 pp. on double leaf. To his former student, the classicist Heinrich Gelzer (1847-1906), thanking him for a lecture. Burckhardt had wanted Gelzer to follow Nietzsche as professor of Greek at Basel: "[...] - Heinrich Gelzer had studied under Burckhardt for five semesters. After taking his degree in 1869, he taught in Basel and Heidelberg for several years before accepting the chair of Classics and Ancient History in Jena in 1878. Nietzsche resigned from his Basel chair of Greek in 1879; his successor was Jacob Wackernagel (1853-1938). - Slight edge defects. Printed in the Letters, vol. VII (1969), no. 812, p. 32f.
