        British Fresh-Water Fishes

      - London: William Mackenzie, n.d., but 1879. First edition, two volumes (pp. xxvi, 92; 93- 204). Large folio (37 cm) in reddish-brown crushed morocco, fine decorative gilt figures, titles, and decorations; a.e.g. Illustrated with forty-one fine full-page chromolithograph portraits of each species by Lydon who also produced the series of equally fine steel engravings of piscatorial scenery to serve as chapter heads, e.g., ‘On the Thames, near Roebuck Inn’. Each species is described systematically in the general form: nomenclature, citations from the literature, fish’s appearance, habits, culinary value, etc. The twenty-six page introduction, dated 1879, is a generalized description in scientific terms of fishes’ physiology, behaviour, etc. The Rev. Houghton, MA, FLS, contributed the text of this quite lovely work, a text which seems lightly edited in places as witness several full folio pages with but a line or two of text. In fact, the real glory is Lydon’s delicate and subtle engravings which may have led to text and plates parting company from time to time. Our copy is blind-stamped ‘Ardmamona, Loch Esk, Co. Donegal’ and is likely from the library of Mr. Thomas Brooke, of the Castle, Lough Esk, who furnished Houghton specimens of Cole’s Charr (Salmo colii), a debt acknowledged in Houghton’s preface. Bottom edges worn, otherwise a clean, bright copy of a most attractive work on fresh-water fishes. Nearly Fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Trees and Shrubs of Fife and Kinross

29 mounted Woodburytype photographic plates (mostly 238 x 188 mm.), each with printed captions. viii, 92 pages. Large folio, orig. green half-morocco & green pebbled cloth (extremities a bit scuffed, occasional minor foxing), upper cover with a large gilt vignette & lettered in gilt, spine gilt. Leith: "Printed for Private Circulation by Reid & Son, Timber Bush, Leith, 1879." A large, beautiful, and little-known photography book, privately printed, with 29 splendid images of trees made by the photographer Andrew Young of Burntisland, and printed according to the Woodbury process of Lock & Whitfield of London. "The following pages are the result of numerous wanderings through the counties of Fife and Kinross during the summers of 1875-6-7-8. The localities visited, and the many fine specimens of Trees and Shrubs which came under our notice, afforded us both pleasure and instruction, and in submitting our observations for perusal, our chief object will be fulfilled if we can interest the Reader in the subject of Arboriculture, or contribute a little to the information and enjoyment of any lover of nature."-from the Preface. The photographs of the magnificent trees are, quite simply, very beautiful, the trees mostly standing alone; the Woodburytype prints are in their characteristic chocolate brown color. "The List of Places Visited" provides details on the houses and their owners, with the years visited. A fine copy with the bookplate of P.H. Normand, Whitehill, Aberdour, Fife. There are a number of contemporary annotations in the text.

        John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1879 - 1879 Wisden

Hi, This lot is an 1879 Rebound Wisden , with the original covers bound within. This is the 16th edition and the the range of the harder to get years in Original form. This book is in Very Good Condition The boards are in Brown with gilt to the spine and also Gerald Brodribb to the front. The covers in the 1879 are of different paper (same as 78) and they always fade and the text is usually hard to read, this 1879 is of the same state but I would say it was a lot better than the average 1879. The covers are very nice and tall, there is some darkness and a mark to the front cover. The rear cover is also in very nice condition just th eusual wear and a mark. No trimming to report, these are very tall books. There is minimal foxing and nice clean white pages. Close to a 9 for the year.

Monographie des ammonites. Lias. Atlas de 58 planches contenant plus de 1100 sujets.

Paris, J. B. Baillière, 1879. Folio (39.2 x 28.5 cm). Title page, with 60 fine lithographed plates with captions [numbered I-L, XXXVbis (Lias inférieur); I-VIII (Lias supérieur)]. Contemporary pebbled calf over pebbled cloth. Spine with five raised bands. Compartments with gilt vignettes and gilt title. Gilt border. Marbled endpapers.= Rare and very fine atlas on upper Triassic ammonites mostly drawn by A. Albert and lithographed by A. Seren. Only 250 copies published. The title page calls for 58 plates, but there is a bis plate to number 35, and an unnumbered 60th plate is present which shows triangular diagrams for measuring the proportional growth of the ammonites' whorls. The plates depict the bewildering variety of ammonite shells during the heyday of this group of now extinct cephalopods. Many species were described by the author, the French malacologist and palaeontologist Pierre Jules Reynès (1815-1876) himself. This is the rare atlas only; the text part is not included. Title page somewhat age-toned, some faint foxing in the margins of a few plates, otherwise a very good, clean copy in a nice, contemporary binding. Nissen ZBI, 3381.

FIRST RUSSIAN CRITIQUE OF PRACTICAL REASON] Kritika prakticheskogo razuma i osnovopolozheniye k metafizike nravov / polnyi perevod s primechaniyami i prilozheniyem Kratkogo ocherka prakticheskoi filosofii sost. N. Smirnov [i.e. Critique of Practical Reason]

tip. A. Transhelya, St. Petersburg 1879 - XVIII, 110, 192, [3] pp. 20?14 cm. Contemporary half leather with faded gilt-lettering on the spine. Original covers are preserved. Rubbed, private library ink stamps on the front pastedown, cover and last page, Soviet bookshop's stamp on the title page, owner's markings in text. Otherwise a very good copy. The first Russian translation of the most important work by Immanuel Kant (first originally published almost a century ago in 1788). In Russia Kant was an important figure, and attitude towards his philosophy work was complicated and ambiguous. With the development of high education different approaches to interpretation of Kant's philosophy have shaped. Perception of his work was particular for every town - Moscow, Kiev, St. Petersburg, Kharkiv. Kant's philosophy was spreading in waves (three overall), for example, at first it was introduced by professors Melman and Schaden in Moscow University who actively started to promote it; Karamzin published kind reviews, and finally first translations were printed («Osnovopolozheniye k metafizike nravov», Moscow, 1803; translated from German by Yakov Ruban). The first printed reference to Kant in Russia was made in 1790 by Melman (in Latin), and the first mention in Russian was made by Karamzin in 1791 (it was a letter about meeting the philosopher). All this together with Kant's election to the Academy of Sciences in 1794 was the start of Russian Kantianism. His name was so well known in Russia that Russian diplomats and travelers were deliberately seeking his reception. His ideas were popular among professors promoting them in universities (Melman, Shad, Finke etc.). It is known that even clerics were using handwritten translations in theological academies. So in the very beginning of 19th century there were made a few translations, most of them were low-grade because the source for translations was secondary or (and) in other than German languages. But even these bad translations disappeared for a few decades, and only in the second half of the century new professional translations (like this) were made. Decrease of Kantianism can explain such situation (the decrease itself was probably caused by the spread of materialism and positivism). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        EDINBURGH Picturesque Notes

1879. [Stevenson's second book] With Etchings by A. Brunet-DeBaines from Drawings by S. Bough, R.S.A., and W.E. Lockhart, R.S.A. And Vignettes by Hector Chalmers and R. Kent Thomas. London: Seeley, Jackson, and Halliday, 1879. Original brown cloth decorated in gilt and black, beveled, all edges gilt. First Edition of Stevenson's second book, preceded only by AN INLAND VOYAGE. Like his first (and his third) book, this one is of a geographic nature; however, EDINBURGH is a sizeable (10" by 14") folio production, with six full-page engraved plates (as well as numerous vignettes within the text). Stevenson began writing this in Paris during the summer of 1878 (the summer that ended with his "travels with a donkey" through the Cevennes). He completed it that autumn, back in Edinburgh; it was actually published in December 1878.~This copy is in brown cloth; blue, green and grey were also used, without priority. It is a bright, near-fine copy, with minor wear at the corners. We find this book to be quite scarce in original cloth -- perhaps because the six plates of a size and quality that is suitable for framing. Beinecke 24.

RARE.
