A Portfolio Containing 40 Original Studies In Pencil, Drawings Of Windmill Point, Fort Erie, Ontario

      - The portfolio, folio size (10 x 16), is titled in pencil on the ffep: "Wind Mill Point." Then follows the signaute, "A. W. Sangster, Buffalo N. Y." and the date 1879. One drawing is entitled "Buffalo River" and a few others have the notation "W. C. Oct" or "W. C. July," presumably in Sangster's hand. The studies are of trees, rivers, lake, rocks, windmills and farm houses. Although unsigned, these sketches are unmistakably Sangster's. There is evidence that approximately 28 leaves have been detached from the portfolio. Quarter-bound in leather over decorated boards. The leather spine is missing and the cover joints are weak, but the drawings are in fine condition. Amos W. Sangster (1833-1904) was a Canadian-American artist, painter, engraver, and inventor. He is primarily remembered for his collection of one hundred fifty-three original depicting scenes along the Niagara River, later published under the general title of "Niagara River and Falls from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario." Most of Sangster's art depicts scenes either along the Niagara River or of the Lake Erie shoreline, close to the mouth of the river. His original art constitutes a valuable artistic and historic record of the landscape as it was over one hundred thirty years ago. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Riding Recollections

Leipzig - Bernhard Tauchnitz, 1879. Leipzig - Bernhard Tauchnitz, 1879 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A nice copy of Whyte-Melville's thoughts on horse riding, dating from the mid nineteenth century. Copyright Edition. With a bookseller's label for D. Nutt, London,to the rear pastedown. With a bookbinder's stamp for Laufmann to the verso of thefront free endpaper. George John Whyte-Melville (18211878) was a Scottish novelist of the sporting-field and a poet. He achieved immediate success as a writer of fox-hunting stories with his first novel Digby Grand in 1854. Having served as a captain in the Coldstream Guards between 1846 and 1849, he volunteered as a major of irregular Turkish cavalry when the Crimean War began. Bones and I, or The Skeleton at Home is an anomaly to the corpus of his work, since it is far from the worlds of the hunting field or the historical romance. Instead Bones and I centres upon an urban recluse who lives in a small, modern villa situated in a London cul de sac looking out upon the dead wall at the back of an hospital. His most famous lyric is also unusual in its unexpected deep melancholy - the words to Paolo Tosti's song Good-bye! He met his death while hunting. Condition: In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, very smart with just some slight rubbing to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Some light foxing to the rear endpapers but otherwise generally bright and clean. Overall: VERY GOOD..

The Afghan War, 1838-1842 from the Journal and Correspondence of the Late …

London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1879. London: Richard Bentley and Son,, 1879. Octavo (212 × 133 mm) Near contemporary red half morocco, green fine pebble-grained boards, title gilt to the spine, edges and endpapers marbled, the characteristic binding of the New South Wales Library of Parliament, their gilt supralibros. Map frontispiece. Slightly rubbed at the extremities, some foxing, heavier front and back, but overall a very good copy. First and only edition, uncommon with just 7 copies listed on COPAC. Abbott (1804-67) was educated Winchester and Addiscombe, commissioned as 2nd lieutenant in 1819 and posted to the Bengal Artillery. "His first active service was at the fort of Bakhara in Malwa in December 1822. At the siege of Bharatpur in December 1825 and January 1826 he successfully commanded a small battery and gained the favourable notice of Lord Combermere, the commander-in-chief, who in October 1827 appointed him adjutant of the Karnal division of artillery. In 1833–4 he served against the forts of Shekawati, returning afterwards to Karnal. He was promoted brevet captain in April 1834 and captain in May 1835" (ODNB). During the war he commanded a battery in the capture of Ghazni; present during the occupation of Kabul; in command of the artillery in the defence of Jalalabad, where he played a key role; "He mounted guns on the defences, constructed carriages for captured ordnance, and, short of ammunition, improvised 'pebble-grape' from stones. Apparently 'the life and soul of the garrison in their worst times', he helped to maintain morale. His artillery supported several successful sorties", "playing a major role" when the garrison finally sallied out and defeated their besiegers. Abbott joined Pollock's force, accompanying Monteath's punitive column against the Shinwaris, his guns being decisive at Mazina. He again distinguished himself in actions in August and early September and at the battles of Tezin, and the Haft Kotal when Akbar Khan was finally defeated. "Abbott returned to India with the army, and as one of the 'illustrious garrison' was welcomed by Lord Ellenborough at Ferozepore". He was subsequently Primary Commissary of Ordnance, 1847-55, and 1855-8 Inspector-General of Ordnance and Magazines, Bengal. In 1859 he returned to England due to ill health, and died at Cheltenham in 1867. Pollock described Abbott as "the finest artillery officer in India". An excellent copy of this important and well-edited narrative.

Der Giardino Giusti in Verona, 1879

1879. Groningen, J.B. Wolters, 1879. 2 volumes. Folio (320 x 250 mm). pp. ix, xii , (4), 235, with 81 chromolithograped plates of fruit and flowers. Publishers pictorial cloth. The large and fine plates are all drawn by A.J. Wendel and lithographed by G. Severyns. Severeyns was one of the most famous Belgian chromolithographers of the period. Belgian lithographers reached the ultimate of craftsmanship during the 19th century. Some of the finest pomological works come from his establishment such as the plates of Bull and Hogg's 'The Herefordshire Pomona', Decaisne's 'Jardin Fruitier du museum', and Berghuis' 'Nederlandsche Boomgaard'. Together with Noort's 'Pomologia Batava' and Berghuis' 'Nederlandsche Boomgaard' it is one of the only three Dutch illustrated works on pomology, which were published during the 19th century. The very fine illustrations depict flowers and fruit growing in the Netherlands. Nissen BBI, 1474..

        Dünenlandschaft, Herzegowina

. Öl auf Leinwand, unten rechts signiert: "L. Braun", verso von fremder Hand bezeichnet: "Herzegowina", 16,6 x 31 cm. Guter Zustand inkl. Rahmen.
