        DICK SANDS

1879 - Translated by Ellen E. Frewer. Illustrated. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1879. 26 pp undated ads. Original brown cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt. First fully-illustrated American edition.~A whale hunt in the Pacific Ocean between New Zealand and the Americas ends in tragedy and Dick Sands, as the only surviving crew member, becomes captain at fifteen years of age. Not possessing the full skills of a sailor, Dick tries to get the ship east to the South American coast. However, the cook on board has plans of his own, and manages to get the ship diverted to eventually land in the country of Angola on the continent of Africa. The cook's plans involve killing Dick and selling the other passengers of the ship into slavery. [Kytasaari]~Published in France as UN CAPITAINE DE QUINZE ANS, this tale was first published in English, in November 1878, by the American pirate publisher Munro -- titled DICK SAND (with no final "S"). It was issued in simple green cloth (also in two wrappered volumes), with 20 illustrations that were somewhat crude due to Munro's eagerness to be first in the marketplace. Sampson Low's authorized London edition was published the following month (December), at the end of which month Charles Scribner's Sons also published this authorized and fully-illustrated edition (dated 1879).~DICK SANDS was published by Scribner during the absolute hey-day of ornate American trade bindings -- similar in style to their very elaborate productions of Verne's MICHAEL STROGOFF and HECTOR SERVADAC. However Scribner's DICK SANDS is scarcer than these other two -- perhaps due to the share of market lost to Munro's simple hardbound volume.~This copy is in brown cloth; we have also had terra-cotta and green (no priority). It is in near-fine condition: the spine ends have very minor wear and the endpaper gutters are reinforced with archival tape (and there is a small "Merry Christmas" sticker on the front endpaper), but the pictorial binding remains bright and sharp. This is only the third copy of the elusive Scribner DICK SANDS that we have seen in 25 years. See Taves & Michaluk V018 and Myers 15. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Uber Spinalganglien und Ruckenmark des Petromyzon.

1879 - Freud, Sigmund (1856-1939). Uber Spinalganglien und Ruckenmark des Petromyzon. In Sitzb. der k. Akad. d. Wissenschaften, 3 Abth., 78 (1879): 81-167. 4 plates by F. Schima after Freud. Whole volume, 8vo. v, [1], 289pp. Plates. 244 x 156 mm. (uncut & unopened). Original printed wrappers. Slight foxing but fine. First Edition. Freud's third paper published as a medical student continued his research on the large Reissner cells in the spinal cord of the fish Petromyzon, which he had undertaken at the direction of the eminent physiologist Ernst Brucke, under whom he was studying. Freud determined these cells to be "nothing else than spinal ganglion cells which, in these low vertebrates. . . remain within the spinal cord." Freud was aided in this research by his improved methods of tissue preparation: "By the use of a gold maceration technique it was possible to make a complete survey of the spinal ganglia of Petromyzon" (Freud, Standard Edition III, p. 229). Freud made a major contribution to evolutionary biology by showing that the spinal ganglion cells of Petromyzon, which "exhibit every transition between bipolarity and unipolarity" (ibid.), represent a transition between the bipolar cells of lower and the unipolar cells of higher vertebrates. He also, in these early researches, took some first steps toward the theory of the neuron, as noted by Freud's biographer Peter Gay:Some of Freud's earliest published papers, written between 1877 and 1883, detail findings that are far from trivial. They substantiate evolutionary processes revealed in the nervous structures of the fish he was examining under his microscope. What is more, it becomes clear in retrospect that these papers form the first link in the chain of ideas leading to the draft of a scientific psychology he would attempt in 1895. Freud was working toward a theory specifying the ways that nerve cells and nerve fibrils function as a unit. But he moved on to other investigations, and when, in 1891, H. W. G. Waldeyer published his epoch-making monograph on the "neuron" theory, Freud's pioneering research was ignored. "It was not the only time," Ernest Jones has noted, "that Freud narrowly missed world fame in early life through not daring to pursue his thoughts to their logical-and not far off-conclusion" (Gay, Freud: A Life for our Time, p. 36).Freud's paper was submitted to the Sitzb. der k. Akad. d. Wissenschaften in 1878 and printed in the June-December volume for that year, published in 1879. The offprint of Freud's paper is dated 1878. Grinstein 34. Jones I, pp. 52-53.         The Chess Monthly

Jas Wade, London 1879 - iv+384+[4 review] pages with illustrations, diagrams, tables, and index. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 6 1/4") bound in quarter black leather with gilt lettering to spine and blue marbled boards. From the library of Dino Ruggieri. Volume I (1). (Betts: 7-25). First edition. The Chess Monthly of Great Britain was one of the first to give properly annotated games. The principal editor, Leopold Hoffer, was helped enormously by having J H Zukertort as co-editor until his death in 1888. There were four regular sections: news, annotated games, problems and endgames. In addition, Hoffer carried on a profoundly bitter feud with his one-time benefactor, Steinitz. This publication should not be confused with The Chess Monthly published in the United States which was short lived from 1857-1862 and edited by Fiske and Morphy. Dino Ruggieri was born in, Pigüé a small city in the Buenos Aires province, October 22, 1921. His parents were both Italians, natives of Porto D'Ascoli. In their early years in Argentina, the Ruggieri’s family lived in the country, located about 45 miles from Pigüé. The family was engaged in agriculture. When Ruggieri was 8, his father purchased a home in Pigüé, where he lived until 2008. In 1938 he was involved in an accident and he was transferred to Buenos Aires for recovery. This was the beginning of his hobby of chess, both as a player over the board and by correspondence, but as well as a major collector of chess materials. After his recovery he became a prominent local chess player and very good representative in postal chess, where he represented Argentina in matches against Italy, Yugoslavia, Holland and other countries. He was using the correspondence with his rivals to offer exchanges. Ruggieri was related to Mr Niemeijer and soon began exchanging materials and making important purchases. He also had frequent contacts with Gregorio Lastra, Normando Ivaldi, Gaspar Soria and Carlos De Veyga, all known collectors of chess. He died in 2009 in 2009 at the age of 88. Condition: Corners bumped, some foxing and age toning, Ruggieri's stamp to front end paper else a very good copy of a scarce item. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Sveriges medeltid

Kulturhistorisk skildring. Del I-III. P. A. Norstedt & Söners Förlag, Stockholm 1879-1903. Del I i tre volymer. [2],iii,[3],317,[1] + iv,321-712 + iv,713-1025,[1] sidor. Del II i tre volymer. [4],222 + [4],223-609,[1] + [6],613-984 sidor. Del III i tvÃ¥ volymer. [4],524 + [4],525-1116 sidor. Rikt illustrerade. Samtida fina ljusbruna halvfranska band med fem upphöjda bind, rik förgylld dekorativ ryggdekor, röda titeletiketter samt röda snitt. NÃ¥got skavda ryggar. [25x17 cm].

        Map of Blanco County

St. Louis: A. Gast & Co., 1879. AN IMPORTANT TEXAS LAND GRANT Paper size: 44" x 32" Texas, without gold mines or fabulous cities, was rich with abundant and affordable pubic land, which attracted a steady stream of visitors during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Lured by the dream of land ownership or profit from land speculation, many left their homelands for the Texas wilderness. It would be difficult to find better illustrations of this migration than the county survey maps charting the boundaries of tracts and names of grantees. These early maps, contemporary with the arrival of new settlers, provide a fascinating visual history of Texas land policy and the settlement of the Lone Star State. While Texas remained a Spanish dominion, land grants were granted to Spanish subjects only. Authority to grant land rested with the viceroy of New Spain in Mexico City until 1767 when the governor of the province of Texas was invested with the authority to issue grants. In 1820 Spain passed a law allowing foreigners to settle in the empire. The government of the now independent Mexico, which controlled the vast public lands of Texas, followed its colonial predecessor's example and in the proceeding years thousands of Anglo Americans undertook the arduous journey across the continent to take advantage of the opportunity to become Texas landowners. Large land grants were also awarded to colony leaders called empresarios, the most famous of whom are probably Moses and his son Stephen Austin. With no central land office, each colony appointed a land commissioner to issue titles to settlers. In 1830 the Mexican congress outlawed further immigration from the United States, sparking the Texas Revolution in the fall of 1835. Upon the establishment of the new Republic in 1836, Texas secured ownership of more than 200 million acres of public land. The Republic of Texas continued the land policies of Spain and Mexico and under its constitution awarded first-class headright to land to all single men and heads of families residing in Texas on March 2, 1836. The first congress of the Republic also established a General Land Office and during the years of independence a total of 36,876,492 acres was parceled out. The pioneers who settled this land helped defend Texan borders from both Indians and Mexico, the latter of which was eager to regain its lands. They also provided valuable tax revenue for the new nation. Texas became the twenty-eighth state of the Union in 1845. With the exception of the thirteen colonies, it is unique among the states because, upon its admittance, it retained its public lands thus providing for its economic strength and success. The new state used some of this land to settle its debts and make public improvements. Under the terms of the Compromise of 1850, Texas ceded its claim to 67 million acres of land to the west and northwest of its current boundaries in exchange for a payment of $10 million. After the settlement of its $7.75 million of debt, Texas used the remainder of the payment to establish a permanent school fund, build a new capitol and governor's mansion, and create a hospital for the mentally ill. The settlement of this public land remained an important part of state policy. Many of the Spanish community property and homestead laws were retained through the era of Mexican rule and the republican period and remained in practice after Texas became a state. Among these, property was exempt from forced sale and land grants extended only as far as the riverbank and not to the middle of the stream, as dictated by Anglo-Saxon common law. The government retained ownership of the streambed and water flowing through it. Most importantly for Texas, Spanish law held th. Book.
