London: Hardwicke, 1879.
Inscribed to His Friend, H. M. Paget, With a Page of Manuscript Tipped In

Butler, Samuel (1835-1902). Evolution, old and new. xii, 384pp., plus 32-page publisher's catalogue. London: Hardwicke & Bogue, 1897. 191 x 126 mm. Original cloth stamped in gold and black, worn, shaken, front hinge split. Leaf from Butler's autograph manuscript of this work tipped to front pastedown, containing 26 lines of text.

First Edition. Butler at first embraced Darwin's theory of evolution, then rejected its as being overly mechanistic. "The British writer Samuel Butler . . . countered Darwin's mechanical, Newtonian view of evolutionary laws operating on inert living matter, with the idea that life, far from being inert, has 'free will' and has used it to influence its own evolution. . . . Butler believed that evolution was to a large extent controlled by its object, whereas Darwin believed that evolution was a blind force (and even chance) operating on its object. Darwin believed in design without a designer, Butler believed in design through distributed goal-driven behavior, through (indirect) cooperation" (internet reference).

Butler presented this copy of his work to his good friend, the Victorian artist and illustrator Henry Marriott Paget, noted in Henry Festing Jones' biography of Butler.

        ALS ("JBurckhardt").

      Basel, 16. VI. 1879. - Large 8vo. 3 pp. on double leaf. To his former student, the classicist Heinrich Gelzer (1847-1906), thanking him for a lecture. Burckhardt had wanted Gelzer to follow Nietzsche as professor of Greek at Basel: "[.] Es sind wesentliche neue Anschauungen in wahrhaft überzeugendem u glänzendem Zusammenhang ausgesprochen. Es sind endlich wieder Resultate, nachdem man in Schriften vieler guter u redlicher Leute immer nur Material, d. h. Schutt u. resp. Staub hat besehen u. schlucken müßen. In den Zeiten da ich noch Culturgesch[ichte] des Mittelalters las u. bald diesen bald jenen Byzantiner durchsah, dämmerte mir hie u. da Aehnliches, aber ich steckte noch im allgemeinen Vorurtheil drin. Über Kortüm freilich war mir ein Licht aufgegangen seit ich in seinem 'Mittelalter' (II, p. 506) die famose Stelle kannte, wo es heißt: Byzanz nahete raschen Schrittes seinem Verfall u. Untergang - worauf aber nur 6 Zeilen später wieder von einem 'langsamen Todeskampf' die Rede ist. Unsere Viri eruditi arbeiten wohl meist recht fleißig, aber schreiben thun sie manchmal gar zu schludrig u. das Geschriebene noch einmal zu überlesen, ehe es an den Setzkasten geht, ist noch immer nicht allgemeine deutsche Sitte [.] Wie gerne ich Sie bei Nietzsche's Abdication hier gehabt hätte, können Sie denken, aber ich verdenke es Ihnen nicht daß Sie in Ihrer jetzigen deutschen Laufbahn bleiben, aus welcher man ja nur einmal austreten kann, dann jedoch für immer. Wir hoffen nun an Jacob W. einen künftigen und redlichen Collegen zu erhalten, aber Sie wären uns natürlich gar viel erwünschter gewesen. Freilich ahne ich, daß Sie eine Fülle großer Aufgaben historischer Art vor Augen sehen, bei welchen Ihnen die hiesige Stellung eines Professors der Philologie gar zu hinderlich gewesen sein würde [.]". - Heinrich Gelzer had studied under Burckhardt for five semesters. After taking his degree in 1869, he taught in Basel and Heidelberg for several years before accepting the chair of Classics and Ancient History in Jena in 1878. Nietzsche resigned from his Basel chair of Greek in 1879; his successor was Jacob Wackernagel (1853-1938). - Slight edge defects. Printed in the Letters, vol. VII (1969), no. 812, p. 32f.

      - Utförd under Liljefors korta elevtid på Konstakademien. Efter förberedande studier för ritmästare C. G. Holmgren i Uppsala började Liljefors vid akademien 1879, men 1882 hade hans ursprungliga entusiasm övergått i besvikelse. Han fick en uppsträckning för bristande närvaro, men ansåg sig inte ha mer att lära i Stockholm och anträdde i stället på hösten 1882 sin första utrikes studieresa.I Nationalmuseum finns åtskilliga teckningar av Liljefors som föreställer tigrar, men bara ett blad som visar lejon (NMH 75/1941). Charles Scribner's Sons New York 1879 - First Edition. Octavo. Original gilt decorated green cloth binding, gilt stamping, red dyed page edges, brown endpapers. Author's own annotated copy of her extremely scarce collection of adult poetry. Best known for her ever popular children's novel, Hans Brinker, Dodge was an accomplished writer and poet as well as the first editor of St. Nicholas Magazine. This copy with torn notebook sheet signed by Dodge and simply stating "Private Copy", includes another index sized paper with two poetry stanzas in her hand meant to be added to a poem in the collection, and a full length handwritten poem titled, Enfoldings, (in another hand but with a singe line corrected by Dodge) previously pinned to page 18, where presumably Dodge wanted it inserted for perhaps a later edition. Also laid in is a typed poem titled, The Stars, which is included in this collection, with handwritten note "revised July 28, 1891" and signed by Dodge in ink. Collection's text has several pencil and few ink notations, words x-ed out and changed, indents indicated. Note on page 14 that reads: "written soon / after dawn while on / the way to N Y / from the Adirondacks". One poem, After Tea, with several ink corrections and with title changed to Sweet Sixteen. Attractive, Near Fine, firmly bound volume, mild shelf wear at spine ends. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        Et dukkehjem;

      Copenhagen: Gyldendalske Boghandels Forlag (F. Hegel & Søn),, 1879-99. Hedda Gabler; Bygmester Solness; John Gabriel Borkman; NÃ¥r vi døde vÃ¥gner. 5 volumes, octavo (172 x 111 mm). Original cloth in different colours, titles and extensive decorations to spines and front boards in black and gilt, publisher's device and decorative frame to rear boards in blind, all edges gilt, patterned endpapers, bound silk bookmarks. Bookplate of Hans Thorsen to front pastedown of Hedda Gabler; ownership inscription to front flyleaf. Extremities a touch rubbed, minor wear to spine ends, mild toning and occasional minor spotting to margins of text blocks, light foxing to text block of Et dukkehjem and to endpapers and flyleaves of NÃ¥r vi døde vÃ¥gner. Otherwise an excellent, bright set. First editions in Dano-Norwegian of five of Ibsen's plays, including A Doll's House, Hedda Gabler, The Master Builder, John Gabriel Borkman, and When We Dead Awaken, all in the publisher's richly gilt decorative cloth. Initially working with various publishers based in Oslo, Ibsen changed publisher with Brand (1866), moving to the Danish Gyldendalske Boghandel. Fredrik Hegel, the publisher, considered Ibsen's language a tad too provincial and requested the author avoid what Hegel considered Norwegianisms. While Brand was published without revisions, "Ibsen would later adhered to Hegel's wishes to some degree, and in a letter to Hegel written in 1868 regarding De unges forbund [The League of Youth], [Ibsen] writes that 'the play is the most artistically refined work I have ever written, and I doubt, that one will find in it a single distinctly Norwegian expression, that does not fit the Copenhagen scene'" (Falkenberg, "Ibsens sprÃ¥k", in SprÃ¥knytt 2000:1-2; cataloguer's translation).

        Monogram Album in which monograms are incorporated into elaborate pen and pencil work

      - N.d., circa 1870s (one later illustration is dated 1879). With eight illustrations of penwork incorporating monograms and an occasional die-cut, plus eight other original ink drawings, three signed by M. L. Robinson, which is almost surely the married name of Ms. Casebourne, and one unfinished drawing. The penwork throughout is sophisticated. A few of the images are copies of known works, such as a buck modeled after Landseer's rendering of such. The majority, though, are almost certainly truly original, which does not mean that they might not have been heavily influenced by other works. The hand is manifestly skilled. One female visage is used repeatedly, and in a few illustrations, the same face is repeated with only minor modifications, and so one might conjecture that the face was a self-portrait. Depicted are a lady riding side-saddle, three sportswomen (croquet, angling and probably archery are represented), and young maidens dressed probably for a ball. Other images include bouquets, sporting, coastal and country life scenes. We can infer that the album was begun by Ms. Casebourne as a nubial young woman from a good family, and she continued with it upon marrying. In the album we catch glimpses of the lifestyle of such a woman of the period. The leather binder housing the album has considerable wear. There is light finger soiling on the margins and the back of the illustrated leaves. The album measures 11.5 by 9.5 inches, 30 by 24 cm.

        John Lothrop Motley: A Memoir.

      Boston. Riverside Press, Cambridge. Houghton, Osgood and Company. 1879. - First Edition, one of an unspecific number of Large Paper Copies from the Large Paper Edition. Special dated presentation is 1878 which might make this a pre-publication copy. John Lothrop Motley (1814–77), American historian and diplomat, b. Dorchester, Mass. Author of two novels concerning Thomas Morton (1839 and 1849), as well as a number of articles for the North American Review. Motley’s study of the history of the Netherlands resulted in The Rise of the Dutch Republic (3 vol., 1856), long a standard work and a popular success, and History of the United Netherlands (4 vol., 1860–67). His last work, The Life and Death of John of Barneveld, appeared in 1874. Motley had spent a short period in 1841 as secretary of the U.S. legation at St. Petersburg and later was minister to Austria (1861–67). President Grant appointed him minister to Great Britain in 1869, but difficulties arising from Motley’s tendency to ignore the instructions of Secretary of State Hamilton Fish and from Grant’s animosity toward his sponsor and friend, Charles Sumner, caused him to be relieved of his post in 1870. Signed/Presentation copy: "Henry H. A. Beach With the kind regards of his friend Oliver Wendell Holmes Dec. 25th 1878." Beach was apparently a medical student at Harvard and friend of Oliver Wendell Holmes. Very Good Plus in woven terracotta cloth and bevelled boards stamped brightly in gold on the front boards and the spine. Very clean, tight, and attractive with the top edge gilded. With light rubbing to the extremities and a little creasing to the top of the spine. With a faint whitish smudge between the gilded lettering "John and Lothrop" at the top of the spne. A very handsome, collectible, signed presentation copy. Scarce with an 1878 dated presentation inscription. First Edition, one of an unspecific number of Large Paper Copies from the Large Paper Edition. Special dated presentation is 1878 which might make this a pre-publication copy. . . Thomas Mann bedankt sich sehr persönlich bei dem österr. Schriftsteller, und Diplomaten Paul Zifferer (1879-1929) in Paris: "Lieber Herr Zifferer, ich bin tief gerührt [im Original unterstrichen] von der Mühe, die Sie sich gegeben haben. Ihren Brief neben mir, fühle ich mich viel sicherer, und was ich nicht brauche, wird doch 'hinter der Szene spuken' wie F o n t a n e sagte. Ein erster Abschnitt der 'Re c h e n s c h a f t ' soll im Maiheft der R u n d s c h a u [ Die Neue Rundschau'] erscheinen. / Ihnen und Ihrer Gattin alles Liebe / Ihr T. M." Dort lernte er Zifferer kennen, den er offenbar gebeten hat, ihn für seinen "Pariser Rechenschaftsbericht" mit Informationen zu versorgen. - Die Resselgasse im Wiener Stadtteil Essling wurde 1955 in Zifferergasse umbenannt, um den ehemaligen Feuilletonredakteur der "Neuen Freien Presse" (Wien) und Diplomaten Paul Zifferer zu ehren. In Wien gehörte er zum Freundeskreis Schnitzlers und Hofmannsthals. - Thomas Manns Erzählung "Pariser Rechenschaft" erschien erstmals in drei Fortsetzungen in der Neuen Rundschau', der literarischen Monatszeitschrift des Fischer Verlags von 1926 und wurde 1964 sogar als Band 815 der Insel-Bücherei gedruckt. - Ecken etwas knittrig. Schwacher Wasserfleck unter dem Unterstrich der Unterschrift, sonst gut. - In der Woche bis zum 12. 10. stelle ich auf der Frankfurter Antiquariatsmesse (Halle 6.0) aus. - Deshalb kann ich Ihre Bestellungen erst ab dem 13. Milwaukee: Silas Chapman, . 1879 - Wall map, 36 x 32 inches, full period hand- color. Backed with modern linen, trimmed in maroon cloth, and on contemporary rollers. Three small age spots in western part of state, faint streaking in margin areas. A lovely map, brightly colored, in very good condition. An attractive and boldly colored wall map of Wisconsin. The counties are each delineated and individually colored, though the northernmost part of the state is still made up of a few very large regions, and does not exactly resemble the current configuration of counties. Several Indian reservations are shown, including those of the Menominee and Oneida, and the many railroad lines in the state are identified. Silas Chapman produced several maps of the Midwest from the 1850s through the 1870s, including pocket and wall maps of Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin. This map is not in Rumsey; Phillips' MAPS; CHECKLIST OF PRINTED MAPS OF THE MIDDLE WEST TO 1900: WISCONSIN; nor on OCLC. Rare.
