        A Study of the so-called Tendon-Reflex Phenomena.

      - Med.-Chir. Trans., 62. - Published by the Medical and Chirurgical Society. London, J.E.Adlard, 1879, 8°, (2), 37, (1) pp., Halbeleinband im Stil der Zeit; St.a.Tit. First Edition - Rare author's offprint! - "The examination of the deep tendon reflex began in 1875 with the recognition by Wesphal and Erb independently that muscular contraction follows the mechanical stimulation of a tendon. Although this phenomenon had been previously noted, its relationship to neurological disease was first pointed out by Erb and Westphal. Erb regarded this phenomenon as a simple reflex, but Westphal thought that the knee-jerk depended on a direct excitation of the muscle, which was maintained in a state of tonus through reflex influences. - The most important of the tendon reflexes was the knee-jerk, which was termed the knee-phenomenon by Westphal, patellar tendon-reflex by Erb, and knee-jerk or myotatic reflex by Gowers. The importance of the ankle-jerk or Achilles tendon phenomena was soon recognized too, particularly its association with ankle clonus. The other tendon reflexes, including the biceps, triceps, radial reflexes and jaw jerk, were also described. - The method of eliciting the tendon reflexes was carefully described. Sir William Richard Gowers (1845-1915) suggested obtaining the knee jerk by a blow to the tendon given with the side of the hand or edge of the stethoscope. . - The examination of the reflexes was introduced into British neurology in 1878 by Grainger Stewart and Buzzard, and the importance of the tendon reflexes was gradually recognized by all neurologists. - It was not until the generation following Charcot and Gowers that the notion of the clinical syndrome, of hyperreflexia, spasticity, absent cutaneous reflexes, weakness and an extensor plantar response, became the hallmark of pyramidal or cortical-spinal tract disease."L.C. Edited from the Original Mss. By William Bray F.S.A. A New Edition. With a Life of the Author by Henry B.Wheatley F.S.A

London: Bickers and Son, 1, Leicester Square, 1879 - John Evelyn (1620-1706) was a pioneering writer on tree cultivation and botanical subjects, translator of Naudé's Advis pour dresser une bibliotheque (Instructions Concerning Erecting of a Library, 1661), and a man of wide-ranging correspondence. His diaries are now one of the standard sources for late seventeenth century English life. "Long dismissed as a virtuoso dabbler in the arts and sciences, Evelyn has now come to be recognized as a scholar and participant in the reception of the new science of the seventeenth century (DNB).         A Journal Of My Visit To England, Ireland and Scotland

John Collins, St. John, NB / Collinsville 1879 - 236 pages. By no means a standard travel narrative; all events of the journey that are mentioned are directly related to theological discourse. This reads like a very long tract; the author was a Methodist preacher. Born in 1798, the author emmigrated from Ireland to New Brunswick in 1843 and settled Collinsville (now Garnett Settlement). This book was prepared after Collins "came home from my visit to my native land, Ireland, and to Scotland, my forefathers' birthplace, and to England, where many of the branches of the family are now scattered - and came back to my adopted land, Saint John, New Brunswick - a place ever near and dear to my heart - in symmetry and oneness with the land where I was twice born - human and divine." Scarce: Worldcat records only one copy [Acadia], ESTC none. Curling to corners, light soiling to a few pages but generally very good, the thin wraps have survived exceptionally well.         DICK SANDS: or the Boy Captain.

Charles Scribner's Sons,, New York: 1879 - First fully illustrated US edition with 94 illustrations--including frontispiece, title page illustration, and one map--91 of which are full-page plate engravings by Meyer and Barbant. There are 92 plates referenced in the "List of Illustrations" but, as in some other copies of this edition, the illustration listed for page 201 is not present (there is text on that page). Pale yellow endpapers, red cloth binding ornately decorated in black and gilt, with illustrations on front and spine. Flaking to the cloth and small hole to front endpaper due to insect damage, which is too bad as it is otherwise about very good with some light soiling but gilt bright, hinges cracked but binding still tight, light foxing to endpapers, contemporary gift inscription on front endpaper, etc. A relatively attractive copy despite the wear.         Cousin Henry (2 vols)

London:: Chapman and Hall,, 1879.. First edition.. Hardcover. G+. Vol I: viii, 219pp, (i), (3) adverts; Vol II: viii, 222pp, (i). Half titles present. Front pastedown bears a 1945 gift inscription to the author Joyce Cary, from whose library this came. Nicely printed on good paper, but showing clear signs of use - minor soiling to many pages, some straightened dog-ear creases, and a few pencilled comments, which I have left for their possible interest. Some foxing in the latter part of Vol II. In the original binding of light blue cloth, front blocked in black, lower board in blind, and spine in gilt. Rather dulled and soiled, with brighter area on the upper board of each, presumably formerly protected by a library label, long since removed, and an area on the lower board of Vol II where there may have been a spill. Very scarce. Good firm copy.
