      - Utförd under Liljefors korta elevtid på Konstakademien. Efter förberedande studier för ritmästare C. G. Holmgren i Uppsala började Liljefors vid akademien 1879, men 1882 hade hans ursprungliga entusiasm övergått i besvikelse. Han fick en uppsträckning för bristande närvaro, men ansåg sig inte ha mer att lära i Stockholm och anträdde i stället på hösten 1882 sin första utrikes studieresa.I Nationalmuseum finns åtskilliga teckningar av Liljefors som föreställer tigrar, men bara ett blad som visar lejon (NMH 75/1941). Kolteckning. Signerad »Bruno Liljefors» och daterad 1881, då Liljefors endast var 21 år gammal. 25 × 30 cm (dagermått). Fäst på kartong. Inramad.

        Along the Way (AUTHOR'S ANNOTATED COPY)

      Charles Scribner's Sons New York 1879 - First Edition. Octavo. Original gilt decorated green cloth binding, gilt stamping, red dyed page edges, brown endpapers. Author's own annotated copy of her extremely scarce collection of adult poetry. Best known for her ever popular children's novel, Hans Brinker, Dodge was an accomplished writer and poet as well as the first editor of St. Nicholas Magazine. This copy with torn notebook sheet signed by Dodge and simply stating "Private Copy", includes another index sized paper with two poetry stanzas in her hand meant to be added to a poem in the collection, and a full length handwritten poem titled, Enfoldings, (in another hand but with a singe line corrected by Dodge) previously pinned to page 18, where presumably Dodge wanted it inserted for perhaps a later edition. Also laid in is a typed poem titled, The Stars, which is included in this collection, with handwritten note "revised July 28, 1891" and signed by Dodge in ink. Collection's text has several pencil and few ink notations, words x-ed out and changed, indents indicated. Note on page 14 that reads: "written soon / after dawn while on / the way to N Y / from the Adirondacks". One poem, After Tea, with several ink corrections and with title changed to Sweet Sixteen. Attractive, Near Fine, firmly bound volume, mild shelf wear at spine ends. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

First Issue has 78 listed titles in ads and date of 1879 at title page. This present copy is a very early printing. A very nice unsophisticated crisp example of this very fragile book, with only minor edge wear and with only a cm of spine paper lacking at lower spine end, else wrappers complete and clean.         Et dukkehjem;

      Copenhagen: Gyldendalske Boghandels Forlag (F. Hegel & Søn),, 1879-99. Hedda Gabler; Bygmester Solness; John Gabriel Borkman; NÃ¥r vi døde vÃ¥gner. 5 volumes, octavo (172 x 111 mm). Original cloth in different colours, titles and extensive decorations to spines and front boards in black and gilt, publisher's device and decorative frame to rear boards in blind, all edges gilt, patterned endpapers, bound silk bookmarks. Bookplate of Hans Thorsen to front pastedown of Hedda Gabler; ownership inscription to front flyleaf. Extremities a touch rubbed, minor wear to spine ends, mild toning and occasional minor spotting to margins of text blocks, light foxing to text block of Et dukkehjem and to endpapers and flyleaves of NÃ¥r vi døde vÃ¥gner. Otherwise an excellent, bright set. First editions in Dano-Norwegian of five of Ibsen's plays, including A Doll's House, Hedda Gabler, The Master Builder, John Gabriel Borkman, and When We Dead Awaken, all in the publisher's richly gilt decorative cloth. Initially working with various publishers based in Oslo, Ibsen changed publisher with Brand (1866), moving to the Danish Gyldendalske Boghandel. Fredrik Hegel, the publisher, considered Ibsen's language a tad too provincial and requested the author avoid what Hegel considered Norwegianisms. While Brand was published without revisions, "Ibsen would later adhered to Hegel's wishes to some degree, and in a letter to Hegel written in 1868 regarding De unges forbund [The League of Youth], [Ibsen] writes that 'the play is the most artistically refined work I have ever written, and I doubt, that one will find in it a single distinctly Norwegian expression, that does not fit the Copenhagen scene'" (Falkenberg, "Ibsens sprÃ¥k", in SprÃ¥knytt 2000:1-2; cataloguer's translation).

        Monogram Album in which monograms are incorporated into elaborate pen and pencil work

      - N.d., circa 1870s (one later illustration is dated 1879). With eight illustrations of penwork incorporating monograms and an occasional die-cut, plus eight other original ink drawings, three signed by M. L. Robinson, which is almost surely the married name of Ms. Casebourne, and one unfinished drawing. The penwork throughout is sophisticated. A few of the images are copies of known works, such as a buck modeled after Landseer's rendering of such. The majority, though, are almost certainly truly original, which does not mean that they might not have been heavily influenced by other works. The hand is manifestly skilled. One female visage is used repeatedly, and in a few illustrations, the same face is repeated with only minor modifications, and so one might conjecture that the face was a self-portrait. Depicted are a lady riding side-saddle, three sportswomen (croquet, angling and probably archery are represented), and young maidens dressed probably for a ball. Other images include bouquets, sporting, coastal and country life scenes. We can infer that the album was begun by Ms. Casebourne as a nubial young woman from a good family, and she continued with it upon marrying. In the album we catch glimpses of the lifestyle of such a woman of the period. The leather binder housing the album has considerable wear. There is light finger soiling on the margins and the back of the illustrated leaves. The album measures 11.5 by 9.5 inches, 30 by 24 cm.

      Boston. Riverside Press, Cambridge. Houghton, Osgood and Company. 1879. - First Edition, one of an unspecific number of Large Paper Copies from the Large Paper Edition. Special dated presentation is 1878 which might make this a pre-publication copy.  John Lothrop Motley (1814–77), American historian and diplomat, b. Dorchester, Mass. Author of two novels concerning Thomas Morton (1839 and 1849), as well as a number of articles for the North American Review. Motley’s study of the history of the Netherlands resulted in The Rise of the Dutch Republic (3 vol., 1856), long a standard work and a popular success, and History of the United Netherlands (4 vol., 1860–67). His last work, The Life and Death of John of Barneveld, appeared in 1874. Motley had spent a short period in 1841 as secretary of the U.S. legation at St. Petersburg and later was minister to Austria (1861–67). President Grant appointed him minister to Great Britain in 1869, but difficulties arising from Motley’s tendency to ignore the instructions of Secretary of State Hamilton Fish and from Grant’s animosity toward his sponsor and friend, Charles Sumner, caused him to be relieved of his post in 1870. Signed/Presentation copy: "Henry H. A. Beach With the kind regards of his friend Oliver Wendell Holmes Dec. 25th 1878." Beach was apparently a medical student at Harvard and friend of Oliver Wendell Holmes. Three small age spots in western part of state, faint streaking in margin areas. A lovely map, brightly colored, in very good condition. An attractive and boldly colored wall map of Wisconsin. Building upon this work, Biedermann published his Elektrophysiologie (G-M 644) in 1895; this was the first exhaustive work on the subject, superseding Du Bois-Reymond&#39;s Untersuchungen uber thierische Elektrizitat (1848) as the master text on electrophysiology. The English neurologist Henry Head, best known as the subject of the experiment described in his and W. H. R. Rivers&#39;s "A human experiment in nerve division" (Garrison-Morton 1302; see also G-M 1298-99 & 1304), also studied under Hering at Prague from 1884 to 1886; given the date of his ownership inscription, he may have received this collection of offprints from Biedermann as a parting gift.         Uber Spinalganglien und Ruckenmark des Petromyzon

      1879. Freud, Sigmund (1856-1939). Uber Spinalganglien und Ruckenmark des Petromyzon. In Sitzb. der k. Akad. d. Wissenschaften, 3 Abth., 78 (1879): 81-167. 4 plates by F. Schima after Freud. Whole volume, 8vo. v, [1], 289pp. Plates. 244 x 156 mm. (uncut & unopened). Original printed wrappers. Slight foxing but fine. <p>First Edition. Freud&#39;s third paper published as a medical student continued his research on the large Reissner cells in the spinal cord of the fish Petromyzon, which he had undertaken at the direction of the eminent physiologist Ernst Brucke, under whom he was studying. Freud determined these cells to be "nothing else than spinal ganglion cells which, in these low vertebrates. . . remain within the spinal cord." Freud was aided in this research by his improved methods of tissue preparation: "By the use of a gold maceration technique it was possible to make a complete survey of the spinal ganglia of Petromyzon" (Freud, Standard Edition III, p. 229).</p><p> Freud made a major contribution to evolutionary biology by showing that the spinal ganglion cells of Petromyzon, which "exhibit every transition between bipolarity and unipolarity" (ibid.), represent a transition between the bipolar cells of lower and the unipolar cells of higher vertebrates. He also, in these early researches, took some first steps toward the theory of the neuron, as noted by Freud&#39;s biographer Peter Gay:</p><p>Some of Freud&#39;s earliest published papers, written between 1877 and 1883, detail findings that are far from trivial. They substantiate evolutionary processes revealed in the nervous structures of the fish he was examining under his microscope. What is more, it becomes clear in retrospect that these papers form the first link in the chain of ideas leading to the draft of a scientific psychology he would attempt in 1895. Freud was working toward a theory specifying the ways that nerve cells and nerve fibrils function as a unit. But he moved on to other investigations, and when, in 1891, H. W. G. Waldeyer published his epoch-making monograph on the "neuron" theory, Freud&#39;s pioneering research was ignored. "It was not the only time," Ernest Jones has noted, "that Freud narrowly missed world fame in early life through not daring to pursue his thoughts to their logical-and not far off-conclusion" (Gay, Freud: A Life for our Time, p. 36).</p><p>Freud&#39;s paper was submitted to the Sitzb. der k. Akad. d. Wissenschaften in 1878 and printed in the June-December volume for that year, published in 1879. The offprint of Freud&#39;s paper is dated 1878. Grinstein 34. Jones I, pp. 52-53.         History of the Donner Party. A Tragedy of the Sierras

      Crowley & McGlashan, Truckee, California 1879 - Octavo. . . McGlashan was born in Wisconsin and was only two years old when his family came to California, making him a contemporary in age and experience with the younger children in the Donner party. He settled in Truckee, California, in 1871 where he became an attorney, a publisher, writer and an inventor. His book was by far the most informed account of its time of the Donner Party. It was the first serious attempt to consult authorative sources, weigh evidence, collect detached episodes into an organized whole, and extend the story of the Donner Party from a sensational incident to an important chapter in California history.         Pocket Map of Kings County Including the City of Brooklyn from Official Records and Surveys

      J.B. Beers & Company, New York 1879 - Hand-colored engraving, folds into gilt embossed titled cloth covers, as issued. Pocket map for visitors to Brooklyn, New York, of typical format. Ward boundaries established in 1867 are numbered. Major streets are highlighted in pink, major parks and cemeteries are indicated in green. A small portion of what are now the Ridgewood and Glendale neighborhoods of Queens are shown, labeled "Newtown." The map cover is dated 1879, although the map itself is dated 1878 with a copyright of 1875. Members of the Beers family made a major contribution to 19th century American cartography. J.B. Beers & Company was founded in 1870 by James Botsford Beers (b. 1811) and his son, Frederick W. Beers. Another son, John Clark Beers, and his son James Lemuel Beers, also joined in the business. The Beers family members sometimes worked individually, and other times in collaboration with each other and/or with other surveyors and publishers. Between 1864 and 1885, the Beers family and collaborators produced more than 125 atlases, mostly of counties, in 10 states, including Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York and Michigan, as well as city atlases, separately issued maps, and county histories. Frederick W. Beers lived in Brooklyn, where he was also employed as head of the map division in the Brooklyn Office of Public Records for 35 years. His long career continued until his retirement at the age of 90. Condition: Generally very good with the usual overall light toning, wear, soft creases. Folds as issued, now professionally re-backed on Japanese paper to reinforce weakness at folds and intersections. Covers very good with light wear. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Autograph letter signed to Mr. [John] Paget

      London, 1879. <p>Carpenter, William B. (1813-85). Autograph letter signed to Mr. [John] Paget [1811-98]). [London] 56 Regents Part Rd. N.W., June 2, 1879. 4pp. 178 x 114 mm. A few tiny pin-holes, but fine otherwise.</p><p>From English physiologist and naturalist William B. Carpenter, who "helped shape the modern life sciences in Britain (Oxford DNB) through both his writings and his work as a teacher and administrator at what is now the University of London. Carpenter performed valuable researches in marine zoology, and was directly influential in persuading the British Admiralty to sponsor the Challenger expedition, the first major scientific study of the deep oceans. Carpenter is also recognized as one of the founders of the modern theory of the adaptive unconscious-he observed that the human perceptual system and the mechanism of human thought operates almost completely outside of conscious awareness. </p><p>Carpenter&#39;s letter, which discusses a false confession to murder made by a mentally unbalanced young man, reads in part as follows:</p><p>Dear Mr. Paget, In turning out my papers at the University today, I have come upon a document which I forward to you, containing the Father&#39;s statement of his Son&#39;s relation to the "Brompton Murder" case, with full particulars of the latter&#39;s confession, and its inconsistency with the facts. </p><p>I believe that I did not send in this to the Home Secy.; but that what I specially urged upon him was the evidence with which Knowles had supplied me, of the "cracky" nature of the youth&#39;s mind, and of the obviously hereditary tendency to brood, as shown in the father and aunt-the latter an old servant of Knowles. And I remember also that there was evidence of the youth having had money in the Savings Bank, and of his having drawn out a pound just before the Crystal Palace Police Fête.</p><p>This altogether made so strong an impression on Mr. Bruce, that he at once commuted the sentence; and the family were so sensible that the lad was not fit to take care of himself, that they expressed no disappointment at his not having received a free pardon. . . .</p><p>Carpenter&#39;s correspondent was the police magistrate and author John Paget, whose Paradoxes and Puzzles, published in 1874, included accounts of a number of sensational crimes. We have not been able to identify the murder case to which Carpenter refers in his letter.</p>
