The Times 1885

ONT>October to December 1879 - An impressively large, heavycollection of The Times newspaper. Containing each daily issue ofThe Times between the 1st of July and the 30th of December, 1879. The Times is a British daily national newspaper, first published in London in 1785 under the title The Daily Universal Register (it became The Times on 1 January 1788). The Times is the first newspaper to have borne that name, lending it to numerous other papers around the world, including The Times of India (1838), The Straits Times (1845), The New York Times (1851) and The Irish Times (1859). It is sometimes referred to as the London Times or The Times of London for distinguishing purposes. The Times is the originator of the ubiquitous Times Roman typeface, originally developed by Stanley Morison of The Times in collaboration with the Monotype Corporation for its legibility in low-tech printing. These 19th century daily issues of The Times offer an interesting window into one of the most fascinating periods in the newspaper's history:In1853 The Times was the first newspaper to send war correspondents to cover particular conflicts. W. H. Russell, the paper's correspondent with the army in the Crimean War, was immensely influential with his dispatches back to England. Such correspondents are very much visible in these pages with detailed and precise reports from all over the world provided in each issue - offering aremarkable insight into British domestic andforeign affairs in the period. Those present in this collection include reports on the Anglo-Zulu war, most notably on the battle of Ulundi, which effectually ended the conflict, Alongside these may be found a plethora ofadvertisements, classifieds, obituaries, letters to the editor and weather reports. Very scarce. Condition: In a half calf binding with moire covered boards. Externally, worn. Wear is heaviest to extremities with some minorloss evident to corners and head and tail of spine. Small scuffs and marks to bopards in places. Some slight loss to backstrip. Front joint has previously failed but has been neatly and professionally repaired from the inside. Rear joint starting but has also been strengthened from the inside. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are ingood, cleancondition with spotting to the first few pages only, alongside justa fewscattered handling marks throughout. Overall: GOOD ONLY with a VERY GOOD interior. LIFE MOSAIC. THE MINISTRY OF SONG AND UNDER THE SURFACE

London: James Nisbet & Co, 1879. n. Hardcover. 203 x 152 mm (8 x 6"). x, 315 pp. ANIMATED CONTEMPORARY LIGHT BROWN MOSAIC AND INTRICATELY GILT MOROCCO DONE IN AN UNUSUAL STYLE BY MUDIE (stamp-signed on verso of front free endpaper), covers with rows of flattened interlocking gilt circles punctuated by fleurons at intersections, the compartments formed by these circles containing either brown morocco with a small inlaid green morocco dot or else with inlaid red morocco enclosing a gilt lozenge; raised bands, spine gilt and inlaid in similar fashion, gilt titling, densely gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt. In a later velvet-lined folding cloth box. With three illustrated section titles, frequent floral wood-engraved decorations, and 12 chromolithographed plates (heightened with gum arabic) by the Baroness Helga von Cramm; original tissue guards. Half title somewhat foxed, intermittent very minor foxing elsewhere, but a bright, fresh copy internally, and THE BINDING IN NEARLY MINT CONDITION, entirely lustrous and unworn. This is a very attractive mosaic binding and a rare specimen from the studio of Christopher and Peter Mudie, noteworthy for its somewhat unusual circular design. According to Packer, the Mudies appear to have been a short-lived firm with limited production; he says that they are known to have worked from 1837-39 at 14 and then 15 St. Martin's Court (in St. Martin's Lane) and at 38 Princes Street, Soho. How the two were related is uncertain, but, in any case, they were undeniably quite skilled, based upon this example of their work. The author of the inspirational poetry contained here was Frances Ridley Havergal (1836-79), a popular poet, a writer of hymns, and an evangelical whose work was published in many separate volumes. Known for her Alpine scenery, Helga von Cramm (fl. 1874-1984) met Havergal in the French Alps and decided, in the latter's words, "to paint for Jesus.".

Leaf from Butler's autograph manuscript of this work tipped to front pastedown, containing 26 lines of text.

First Edition. Butler at first embraced Darwin's theory of evolution, then rejected its as being overly mechanistic. "The British writer Samuel Butler . . . countered Darwin's mechanical, Newtonian view of evolutionary laws operating on inert living matter, with the idea that life, far from being inert, has 'free will' and has used it to influence its own evolution. . . . Butler believed that evolution was to a large extent controlled by its object, whereas Darwin believed that evolution was a blind force (and even chance) operating on its object. Darwin believed in design without a designer, Butler believed in design through distributed goal-driven behavior, through (indirect) cooperation" (internet reference).

Butler presented this copy of his work to his good friend, the Victorian artist and illustrator Henry Marriott Paget, noted in Henry Festing Jones' biography of Butler.

First editions in Dano-Norwegian of five of Ibsen's plays, including A Doll's House, Hedda Gabler, The Master Builder, John Gabriel Borkman, and When We Dead Awaken, all in the publisher's richly gilt decorative cloth. Initially working with various publishers based in Oslo, Ibsen changed publisher with Brand (1866), moving to the Danish Gyldendalske Boghandel. Fredrik Hegel, the publisher, considered Ibsen's language a tad too provincial and requested the author avoid what Hegel considered Norwegianisms. While Brand was published without revisions, "Ibsen would later adhered to Hegel's wishes to some degree, and in a letter to Hegel written in 1868 regarding De unges forbund [The League of Youth], [Ibsen] writes that 'the play is the most artistically refined work I have ever written, and I doubt, that one will find in it a single distinctly Norwegian expression, that does not fit the Copenhagen scene'" (Falkenberg, "Ibsens språk", in Språknytt 2000:1-2; cataloguer's translation).

        John Lothrop Motley: A Memoir.

Boston. Riverside Press, Cambridge. Houghton, Osgood and Company. 1879. - First Edition, one of an unspecific number of Large Paper Copies from the Large Paper Edition. Special dated presentation is 1878 which might make this a pre-publication copy. John Lothrop Motley (1814–77), American historian and diplomat, b. Dorchester, Mass. Author of two novels concerning Thomas Morton (1839 and 1849), as well as a number of articles for the North American Review. Motley’s study of the history of the Netherlands resulted in The Rise of the Dutch Republic (3 vol., 1856), long a standard work and a popular success, and History of the United Netherlands (4 vol., 1860–67). His last work, The Life and Death of John of Barneveld, appeared in 1874. Motley had spent a short period in 1841 as secretary of the U.S. legation at St. Petersburg and later was minister to Austria (1861–67). President Grant appointed him minister to Great Britain in 1869, but difficulties arising from Motley’s tendency to ignore the instructions of Secretary of State Hamilton Fish and from Grant’s animosity toward his sponsor and friend, Charles Sumner, caused him to be relieved of his post in 1870. Signed/Presentation copy: "Henry H. A. Beach With the kind regards of his friend Oliver Wendell Holmes Dec. 25th 1878." Beach was apparently a medical student at Harvard and friend of Oliver Wendell Holmes. Very Good Plus in woven terracotta cloth and bevelled boards stamped brightly in gold on the front boards and the spine. Very clean, tight, and attractive with the top edge gilded. With light rubbing to the extremities and a little creasing to the top of the spine. With a faint whitish smudge between the gilded lettering "John and Lothrop" at the top of the spne. A very handsome, collectible, signed presentation copy. Scarce with an 1878 dated presentation inscription. First Edition, one of an unspecific number of Large Paper Copies from the Large Paper Edition. Special dated presentation is 1878 which might make this a pre-publication copy. . . Biedermann worked with Hering until 1888; and the above work is the record of their collaboration. Building upon this work, Biedermann published his Elektrophysiologie (G-M 644) in 1895; this was the first exhaustive work on the subject, superseding Du Bois-Reymond's Untersuchungen uber thierische Elektrizitat (1848) as the master text on electrophysiology. The English neurologist Henry Head, best known as the subject of the experiment described in his and W. H. R. Rivers's "A human experiment in nerve division" (Garrison-Morton 1302; see also G-M 1298-99 & 1304), also studied under Hering at Prague from 1884 to 1886; given the date of his ownership inscription, he may have received this collection of offprints from Biedermann as a parting gift.
