Autograph letter signed, to Frederick Howlett, concerning adaptation to environment versus 'inheritance from a common ancestor extremely remote in time'.

Down, Beckenham, Kent, 21 September [1878] - 3 pages on a single folded sheet (sheet 200 x 259 mm), with the envelope address panel in Darwin’s hand on blank page, in very good condition. A fine, substantive letter concerning inherited traits from a common ancestor versus adaptation due to similar environments. Howlett had raised questions about a common ancestor in the evolution of certain features common to camels and ostriches, one of which concerned their similar blood cells. Darwin replied: ‘ . I sh[oul]d doubt almost the peculiar shape of the corpuscles in the Camelidae being due to inheritance from a remote progenitor; & most of the points which you specify as being alike in camels & ostriches could be accounted for, as it appears to me, more probably by adaptation to similar conditions, rather than to inheritance from a common ancestor, extremely remote in time .’ Darwin starts off by confessing that he ‘cannot throw a gleam of the obscurest light on your difficult problem, which has sometimes seemed to me as a most perplexing one. But in fact we do not know enough of the meaning of the shape or size of the blood corpuscles or of scarcely any histological characters .’. The letter contains several corrections and insertions, indicating that Darwin struggled to provide a precise reply to Howlett’s queries. It is unusual for the original envelope or its address panel with postage and cancellation to be preserved, as here, with Darwin’s letters. This appears to be the only communication Darwin had with Howlett. Frederick Howlett (1821–1908), clergyman and astronomer, was awarded his BA in 1844 (Oxford, Worcester College) and his MA in 1851. He made careful drawings of sunspots over a 35-year period, using a 3-inch refracting telescope. These drawings, in eight volumes, are in the Royal Astronomical Society archives (J.M. Vaquero and M. Vázquez, The Sun Recorded Through History, 3.5.10) Darwin Correspondence Project 11701F (summary only)

Report of the Board of Ordnance Officers Convened in Pursuance of the Act of Congress Approved November 21, 1877, to Select a Magazine Gun for the U.S. Military Service.

Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1878. Book. Very good- condition. Paperback. First Edition. Octavo (8vo). 71 numbered pages of text, complete with one folding table and 21 folding plates that when unfolded meansure 14-1/8 inches long, 9 inches high showing 19 of the submitted rifles plus a modification and some testing equipment. Paperback binding of tan wrappers; front cover is chipped and worn and lacking the rear cover. The front cover was laid down on a new paperback binding. Three plates have archival repairs at the folds, and another plate is soiled in the margins. There is minimal loss at some of the repaired folds. Infrequently offered on the market, the last one offered at auction was in 2007, and there are only two copies listed on OCLC. Published as Appendix T to the Report of the Chief of Ordnance to the Secretary of War for 1878. The Winchester Hotchkiss which won the recommendation for purchase of the board is well known but some of the other competitors are relatively unknown. Only one of the three actions submitted by Sharps is shown in the plates and it resembles the Swiss Vetterli more than any American gun. The Chaffee-Reese was completely different from the one that was later produced at Springfield Armory. One of the Remingtons appears to have been modified into the Keene rifle at a later date. The detail drawings are fine and could probably be related to various patents. First edition..

(MGGV, 1767, Art. Haslinger). - Mit hs.         Scrapbook documenting a "pilgrimage" of the Allegheny Commandery of the Masonic Knights Templar to Ireland, Scotland, England, Holland, Belgium, the Rhine, Switzerland, Italy, and the Paris Exposition

Allegheny (today Pittsburgh's North Side), Pennsylvania 1878 - This 78-page hardcover scrapbook measures 8.5" x 11" and is neatly stuffed with approximately 320 brochures, certificates, itineraries, trade cards, news articles, hotel advertisements, business cards, calling cards, masonic cards, attraction receipts, event tickets, Curnard Line Passenger Lists, postage stamps, municipal seals, travel maps, banquet menus, postal cards, scenic prints and cards, hotel pamphlets and prints, railroad advertisements, steamship prints, exposition souvenirs, and more. Everything is in very nice shape. The contents have been glued to the album pages. Several pages are starting to separate. Minor cover wear, heaviest at spine ends. In 1878, 40 "crusaders" (some accompanied by family members) of the Allegheny Commandery, No. 35, Knights Templar began a grand tour "pilgrimage" to Europe. The basic tour, which cost $500 in gold, was to last 75 days, although individuals could extend their tour to 106 days by adding a visit to "the principal Italian cities" for an additional $140. The tours included all lodging and first-class passage on Cunard Line steamships. James Rafferty chose the 106 day tour which is detailed in a Thomas Cook itinerary affixed to the first page of the album. The $640 he spent in 1878 is the equivalent of over $15,000 in 2017 dollars. The exceptionally wide variety of ephemera collected by Rafferty is for the most part mounted in chronological sequence. In addition to many visually stunning ephemeral items, Rafferty also mounted long and detailed accounts of the tour that were regularly published in a local newspaper. The last few leaves in the album contain related materials collected after the trip including a cabinet card photo of Rafferty and two obituaries from 1891 (he died at age 37) identifying him as a Pennsylvania "Capitalist" who had been residing in San Diego, California. Be sure to visit the on-line listing of this album and view images of many of the album pages. A fascinating testament to the wealth associated with Allegheny, Pennsylvania in the last quarter of the 19th-century. At the time it was one of the richest cities in the United State and the home to more millionaires than any other city in the world.         A spectacular collection of three Horse in Motion photographs.

Three albumen prints (approx. 8 x 3 1⁄2 in.), on original publisher's mounts printed on recto and verso, each a composite image of 6 or 12 photographs. Light wear and soiling, some fading and foxing. Very good condition. Eadweard Muybridge's photographs of horses in motion are icons in the history of photography. This landmark photograph was recently included in 100 Photographs: The Most Influential Images of All Time (2016). Leland Stanford, railroad magnate and owner of the greatest racing stable in the West, engaged Muybridge to undertake pioneering experiments in instantaneous and sequential photography of horses. Stanford was in part motivated by the "unsupported transit" controversy--are there moments when all four of a horse's feet leave the ground while trotting or galloping? On June 15, 1878, Muybridge demonstrated his method using a battery of twelve cameras whose shutters were released by a series of tripwires as the horse raced down the track. Over the next few days Muybridge made six sequences of various horses in motion. "Muybridge's Horse in Motion grids were the most sensational photographs of their day. Contemporaneous accounts describe crowds gathering outside shop windows in which they were displayed" (Prodger in Encyclopedia of Nineteenth Century Photography). The six photographs in the series are listed on the mounts: Mahomet cantering, Occident trotting, three views of Abe Edgington trotting, and Sallie Gardner running. Muybridge announces that six "series"--meaning a single print containing a series of photographs of a horse--"are now published." Individual photographs appear for sale occasionally, but groups are quite rare. We offer three of the six, the largest group we have ever seen for sale. "Muybridge's 1878-79 experiments were the first photographs to record such specific information about the attitudes of animals and people in motion" (Brookman, Eadweard Muybridge). The printed captions provide a wealth of detail. One states in small part, "The negatives of these photographs were made of intervals of twenty- seven inches of distance, and about the twenty-fifth part of a second of time; they illustrate consecutive positions assumed in each twenty-seven inches of progress during a single stride of the mare. The vertical lines were twenty-seven inches apart; the horizontal lines represent elevations of four inches each. The exposure of each negative was less than the two thousandth part of a second." "Not only did the sequences of photographs dissect rapid motion, they also presented a mechanical, scientific view of action the human eye simply could not decode on its own" (Brookman). Muybridge issued these photographs to document and promote his accomplishment. A series of drawings from the photographs appeared in Scientific American, and La Nature in Paris published five of the sequences.Muybridge's studies of animals in motion culminated in the publication of his Animal Locomotion in 1888. This is an outstanding series of photographs representing a milestone in the history of photography. The collection comprises: 1. The Horse in Motion ... "Sallie Gardner," owned by Leland Stanford; running at a 1.40 gait over the Palo Alto track, 19th June, 1878. Verso text copyright 1879. 2. The Horse in Motion. "Mahomet," owned by Leland Stanford; cantering at 8 minute gait over the Palo Alto track, 18th June, 1878. 3. The Horse in Motion: "Abe Edgington," owned by Leland Stanford; driven by C. Marvin, walking at a 15-minute gait over the Palo Alto track, 18th June 1878.

Manuscript Letter Signed by Civil War Hero to Junior Officer Concerning Greek and Ottoman Turk Tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean

      - A manuscript letter signed, written by the famous Navy Admiral William Le Roy aboard the U.S. Flag-ship Irenion based at Villefranche-sur-mer, to Commander F. J. Higginson aboard the U.S.S. Despatch off the Coast of present day Greece near Volos. Le Roy served for forty-eight years in the U.S. Navy and saw action in the Mexican War, on the African Slave Patrol, and most prominent in the American Civil War. This letter, written near the end of his career, was during his period of Commander-in-Chief of the European squadron, and is a little fatherly advice to the younger officer, warning him not to interfere in the situation that had recently arisen between the Ottoman Turks and their subjects, the Greeks, in the city of Volos. The crisis occurred as a result of an uprising by the Greeks against both their Ottoman rulers and a small group of Protestant missionaries who had settled in Volos and began to proselytize among the populace. This incurred the wrath of some of the locals, who badly treated the missionaries. The recepient of the letter, Commander Higginson, is tempted to intervene and protect the missionaries from further abuse, but is warned by Le Roy not to do so, as this could be considered an act of war against the Turks, since it and landfall would be encroaching on their territorial sovereignty. A facsinating letter that weaves interesting elements of Ottoman occupation, Greek unrest, and Protestant missionary work abroad. Dated 21st of October, 1878. 4 pages. A few small split at folds. Size is 25.5 x 20cm.

A Full Account, the Lives and Crimes of the "Mollie Maguires,"

1878. "This Terrible Secret Society" [Molly (Mollie) Maguires]. A Full Account. The Lives and Crimes of the "Mollie Maguires," The Confessions and Execution, With an Account of the Organization of this Terrible Secret Society. Philadelphia: Barclay & Co., [copyright 1878]. [ii], [19]-88, [6] pp. 6 woodcut plates, including two repeated on the front and rear wrappers. 6-page publisher catalogue. Complete. Octavo (9-1/4" x 5-3/4"). Stab-stitched pamphlet in pictorial wrappers. Moderate rubbing to extremities with some wear to spine ends, light soiling and a few tiny stains to wrappers, light toning to interior, faint dampspotting to a few leaves. $1,250. * "'Fraternalism gone bad' might best describe the situation in the mining regions of Pennsylvania where the local chapter of the Ancient Order of Hibernians held sway. An inner group known as the Mollie Maguires...constituted a kind of Irish mafia...Its control was finally broken by a Pinkerton detective. (...) June 21, 1877 saw the end of ten Mollies...three more were executed on March 25, 1878" (McDade). The criminals and victims are described in Barclay's account in great detail, with six plates of stark graphics to match. Barclay was a leading purveyor of hyper-sensationalized true-crime publishing. In most cases, the format is that of pulp fiction, but with informative factual content. Other Barclay titles promoted in the ads at the rear of the pamphlet include Brooklyn's Horror: Wholesale Holocaust at the Brooklyn, New York Theatre and Little Cuba: A True Story of Love, War, And Startling Adventures. McDade, The Annals of Murder 691.

Eigenhändiger Brief mit Unterschrift "Rich. Wagner". Bayreuth, 14. Dez. 1878.

      - 1 Seite (ca. 19,7 x 12,4 cm) auf Doppelblatt. Wagner-Briefe-Verzeichnis (WBV) 8094. Also: Weimar. Parsifal-Tinte). Geglätteter Mittelfalz.

        The Return of the Native

Smith, Elder, & Co, London 1878 - First Edition, three volumes in original cloth. A generally good set with some wear and use, hinges professionally repaired so the books are tight, original end papers and half titles all present, as well as the frontispiece "Sketch Map of the Scene of the Story" in volume I. There is faint scratching on the front boards, and so presumably lending library labels were removed, as on so many copies. All in all a presentable set of one of Thomas Hardy's greatest novels.         The volume for the second half of the year 1878.

London, George C. Leighton, 1878. Folio. Contemporary half-calf over marbled boards, spine ruled and lettered in gilt and with gilt-stamped morocco lettering-piece; pp. [iv], 620, highly illustrated with superb wood-engravings throughout, among them 38 of Cyprus (several full-page); hinges a little worn, very few faint spots internally, a very clean and fresh copy. One of the best pictorial and textual documentations of Cyprus, compiled in the year the British took control of the previously Ottoman island which the Sultan had given away in a secret agreement for British support at the Berlin Conference against the advances and strong position of the Russian Empire. The Cyprus related articles marvel at the pictoresque architecure and rough landscape, describe the logisitc difficulties (including camel caravans) of getting the British military and administrative equipment to the towns and ports of the island. In doing so they paint a vivid picture of life on the island in the late 1870s.
