A spectacular collection of three Horse in Motion photographs.

Three albumen prints (approx. 8 x 3 1⁄2 in.), on original publisher's mounts printed on recto and verso, each a composite image of 6 or 12 photographs. Light wear and soiling, some fading and foxing. Very good condition. Eadweard Muybridge's photographs of horses in motion are icons in the history of photography. This landmark photograph was recently included in 100 Photographs: The Most Influential Images of All Time (2016). Leland Stanford, railroad magnate and owner of the greatest racing stable in the West, engaged Muybridge to undertake pioneering experiments in instantaneous and sequential photography of horses. Stanford was in part motivated by the "unsupported transit" controversy--are there moments when all four of a horse's feet leave the ground while trotting or galloping? On June 15, 1878, Muybridge demonstrated his method using a battery of twelve cameras whose shutters were released by a series of tripwires as the horse raced down the track. Over the next few days Muybridge made six sequences of various horses in motion. "Muybridge's Horse in Motion grids were the most sensational photographs of their day. Contemporaneous accounts describe crowds gathering outside shop windows in which they were displayed" (Prodger in Encyclopedia of Nineteenth Century Photography). The six photographs in the series are listed on the mounts: Mahomet cantering, Occident trotting, three views of Abe Edgington trotting, and Sallie Gardner running. Muybridge announces that six "series"--meaning a single print containing a series of photographs of a horse--"are now published." Individual photographs appear for sale occasionally, but groups are quite rare. We offer three of the six, the largest group we have ever seen for sale. "Muybridge's 1878-79 experiments were the first photographs to record such specific information about the attitudes of animals and people in motion" (Brookman, Eadweard Muybridge). The printed captions provide a wealth of detail. One states in small part, "The negatives of these photographs were made of intervals of twenty- seven inches of distance, and about the twenty-fifth part of a second of time; they illustrate consecutive positions assumed in each twenty-seven inches of progress during a single stride of the mare. The vertical lines were twenty-seven inches apart; the horizontal lines represent elevations of four inches each. The exposure of each negative was less than the two thousandth part of a second." "Not only did the sequences of photographs dissect rapid motion, they also presented a mechanical, scientific view of action the human eye simply could not decode on its own" (Brookman). Muybridge issued these photographs to document and promote his accomplishment. A series of drawings from the photographs appeared in Scientific American, and La Nature in Paris published five of the sequences.Muybridge's studies of animals in motion culminated in the publication of his Animal Locomotion in 1888. This is an outstanding series of photographs representing a milestone in the history of photography. The collection comprises: 1. The Horse in Motion ... "Sallie Gardner," owned by Leland Stanford; running at a 1.40 gait over the Palo Alto track, 19th June, 1878. Verso text copyright 1879. 2. The Horse in Motion. "Mahomet," owned by Leland Stanford; cantering at 8 minute gait over the Palo Alto track, 18th June, 1878. 3. The Horse in Motion: "Abe Edgington," owned by Leland Stanford; driven by C. Marvin, walking at a 15-minute gait over the Palo Alto track, 18th June 1878.

A Full Account, the Lives and Crimes of the "Mollie Maguires,"

1878. "This Terrible Secret Society" [Molly (Mollie) Maguires]. A Full Account. The Lives and Crimes of the "Mollie Maguires," The Confessions and Execution, With an Account of the Organization of this Terrible Secret Society. Philadelphia: Barclay & Co., [copyright 1878]. [ii], [19]-88, [6] pp. 6 woodcut plates, including two repeated on the front and rear wrappers. 6-page publisher catalogue. Complete. Octavo (9-1/4" x 5-3/4"). Stab-stitched pamphlet in pictorial wrappers. Moderate rubbing to extremities with some wear to spine ends, light soiling and a few tiny stains to wrappers, light toning to interior, faint dampspotting to a few leaves. $1,250. * "'Fraternalism gone bad' might best describe the situation in the mining regions of Pennsylvania where the local chapter of the Ancient Order of Hibernians held sway. An inner group known as the Mollie Maguires...constituted a kind of Irish mafia...Its control was finally broken by a Pinkerton detective. (...) June 21, 1877 saw the end of ten Mollies...three more were executed on March 25, 1878" (McDade). The criminals and victims are described in Barclay's account in great detail, with six plates of stark graphics to match. Barclay was a leading purveyor of hyper-sensationalized true-crime publishing. In most cases, the format is that of pulp fiction, but with informative factual content. Other Barclay titles promoted in the ads at the rear of the pamphlet include Brooklyn's Horror: Wholesale Holocaust at the Brooklyn, New York Theatre and Little Cuba: A True Story of Love, War, And Startling Adventures. McDade, The Annals of Murder 691.

      - 1 Seite (ca. 19,7 x 12,4 cm) auf Doppelblatt. Wagner-Briefe-Verzeichnis (WBV) 8094. Also: Weimar. Parsifal-Tinte).       London, George C. Leighton, 1878. Folio. Contemporary half-calf over marbled boards, spine ruled and lettered in gilt and with gilt-stamped morocco lettering-piece; pp. [iv], 620, highly illustrated with superb wood-engravings throughout, among them 38 of Cyprus (several full-page); hinges a little worn, very few faint spots internally, a very clean and fresh copy. One of the best pictorial and textual documentations of Cyprus, compiled in the year the British took control of the previously Ottoman island which the Sultan had given away in a secret agreement for British support at the Berlin Conference against the advances and strong position of the Russian Empire. The Cyprus related articles marvel at the pictoresque architecure and rough landscape, describe the logisitc difficulties (including camel caravans) of getting the British military and administrative equipment to the towns and ports of the island. In doing so they paint a vivid picture of life on the island in the late 1870s.

Leipzig, Reclam Jun., o. J. [1878]. 12°. 92 + 4 n.n. + 14 + 2 S. OLd. EA. WG II 64. Mit dem Porträt und der faksimilierten Unterschrift. - [Universal-Bibliothek, Nr. 1000]. - Ebd. etw. berieben, leicht stockfleckig, Gbrsp. - In dem selten Ledereinband, mit Goldkopfschnitt. - Heyse, (1830 - 1914), studierte 1847-51 in Berlin und Bonn klassische Philologie, Romanistik und Kunstgeschichte und wurde 1852 promoviert. Er schloß u.a. - Nijhoff & Kronenberg 310, 3736, 645, 3740, 3445, 1878, 2863. Seven very rare Latin post-incunabules all printed in Antwerp (ad 4 otherwise unknown, ads 1 & 7 each with 2 other copies known, ads 5 & 6 each with 3 other copies, ad 2 with 4 other copies and ad 3 with 9 other copies, but even some of these few copies are incomplete), bound together in a contemporary Antwerp panel-stamped binding, the panel finely engraved to render all the elements in exquisite detail. The 7 works were probably bound together to form a choice collection of key texts available in Antwerp in the 1530s for pedagogical and edifying purposes and for use in schools: (biblical) plays, edifying dialogues and pedagogical (hand) books by the best humanist authors in the field of education at that time. The collection is also very important for the history of Neo-Latin literature in the Low Countries in the first half of the sixteenth century. The present volume (in private hands) was exhibited at the Museum Plantin-Moretus in 1938 and at the Royale Library in Brussels in 1955, and is also illustrated in Armorial Belge. With fairly extensive contemporary manuscript notes in ad 7. With a tear into the text of C2 in ad. 4, a few small and mostly marginal worm holes in ad 1, some smudges on the first leaves; the binding was very skilfully and unobtrusively rebacked, with most of the original backstrip mounted on the new spine, and the calf shows some cracks and scratches, but the panel stamp is preserved in fine condition on the front board and very good condition on the back board.         Charles G. "Chinese" Gordon

March 21, 1878. Autograph Letter Signed <I>“C.G. Gordon,”</I> one pages, 8.25” x 13”. Cairo, March 21, 1878. To E.M. Wood Esqre CE. Soiled, some words faded, worn at mid-horizontal fold. Good condition.<br /><br />In full, <I>“In consequence of financial embarrassment of Soudan Government and of the impossibility of being able to carry on the work of the Soudan Railway, with the means, at my disposal, I find myself obliged to discontinue that work and in consequence to dispense with your services. I thank you very much for the manner in which you have performed your duties, and regret much our disposition.”</I><br /><br />In October 1873, Gordon was offered the appointment as Governor of Equatoria province in southern Sudan by the Khedive of Egypt, Ismail Pasha. Sudan was an Egyptian colony. With the approval of the British government, he accepted and arrived in Egypt in January 1874. He served as Governor of Equatoria from 1874-1876 and Governor General of the Sudan from 1874-1880. Gordon moved to establish absolute military and civil jurisdiction over the entire country. Returning to Khartoum in January 1878, the Khedive summoned him to Cairo to assist in settling the financial affairs of Egypt. He reached Cairo in March, and was at once appointed by Ismail as President of the Commission of Inquiry into Egyptian finances.<br /><br />Egypt was in debt to several European nations. Ismail Pasha blamed his country’s problems on lower than expected revenues from the Sudan colony and ordered all non-essential programs in Sudan ended, including the Sudan Railway; Gordon had planned a Cairo-to-Khartoum railway. As he tells Mr. Wood in this letter, Gordon felt “obliged to discontinue that work.” If it had been completed, the Siege of Khartoum might never have occurred; reinforcements would have arrived from Cairo much sooner.<br /><br />The Khedive did not want the European Commissioners of the Debt, the representatives of the bondholders, as members of the Commission. Gordon accepted the post on these terms, but the consuls-general of the different powers refused to agree to the constitution of the Commission, opposing the wishes of Ismail Pasha. Gordon chaired his first meeting on March 8, 1878. A debt agreement not favorable to Pasha was signed on March 22nd, the day after this letter was written. The Khedive fell into the hands of his creditors, and was deposed the following year in favor of his son, Tewfik. <br />

Bonn: Emil Strauss, 1878. Pflüger, Eduard F. W. (1820-1910). Ueber Wärme und Oxydation der lebendigen Materie. Offprint from Pflüger's Archiv für die gesammte Physiologie 18 (1878). 247-380pp. 231 x 156 mm. Original printed wrappers, small piece torn from front wrapper, slight soiling. Some discoloration from acidic wrappers, but very good. First Edition, Offprint Issue. Pflüger, a pupil of Müller and du Bois-Reymond, made important contributions to our knowledge of the physiology of respiration. "The most effective work of Pflüger and his pupils is the proof that the essential seat of respiration is not in the blood, but in the tissues. This was accomplished in his important memoirs on the gasometry of the blood (1866), on the cause of dyspnea, apnea, and the mechanism of respiration (1868), on the origin and rational of the oxidative processes in the animal organism (1872), and on the heat production and oxidation of living matter (1878)" (Garrison, History of Medicine, p. 607). Printed letterhead “Brady’s National Portrait Gallery / 625 Pennsylvania Avenue, / Washington, D.C.,” December 22, 1878. [To Mrs. Townsend.] Light soiling, Fine condition. We cannot be 100% sure this is not a secretarial, thus offer this as a dictated letter.<br /><br />In full, “It affords me great pleasure to send you a portrait of your husband. It is pronounced to be an excellent likeness by all who have seen it. It would have been sent on some time ago but has been on exhibition in my Gallery. It will reach you in time to be wreathed with evergreen appropriate to the festival of Christmas-time & to show in a slight degree my appreciation of the genius of the original. I hope to have a portrait of yourself as a companion picture whenever the opportunity occurs. Probably you may visit Washington this Winter & hoping to have the pleasure of seeing you & wishing yourself & Mr Townsend a happy Christmas & with many wishes to the little ones for their enjoyment of ‘Santa Claus.’ I am, My dear Madam, Very Respectively & truly yours, M.B. Brady.”<br /><br />Famed Civil War photographer Mathew B. Brady suffered from poor eyesight and had an aversion to writing. Charles Hamilton in his pioneer work, “Collecting Autographs and Manuscripts” (Norman, Oklahoma: University of Oklahoma Press, 1961), states, “Nearly all of his letters were written and signed for him by secretaries.” Undoubtedly Brady’s words extolling the subject of one of his portraits; we are not certain it is in his hand.<br />

The Chronicles of Barsetshire:] The Warden; Barchester Towers; Doctor Thorne; Framley Parsonage; The Small House at Allington; The Last Chronicle of Barset.

London: Chapman and Hall, 1878&#150;93 - 6 works in 8 volumes, octavo (187 × 123 mm). Recent red crushed half morocco by Bayntun-Riviere, red cloth sides, gilt titles to spines, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Illustrated bookplate to front pastedowns. An excellent, clean set. With wood-engraved frontispieces by F. A. Fraser. An attractively bound set of the collected Chronicles of Barsetshire. Trollope was famously never published in a complete uniform edition and Chapman and Hall's collected Chronicles of Barsetshire, which was originally published in 1878, is the nearest attempt at a collected edition, aside from the Chapman and Hall and Ward, Lock and Co.'s cheaply produced editions. This set is a reissue of the 1878 edition."The history of [Chapman & Hall's 1878 collected edition of the Chronicles of Basetshire] is not without interest. Trollope himself was very anxious that his Barsetshire novels should be brought together in a uniform series. Originally the venture was to comprise only six volumes, for he did not himself regard The Small House as one of the Barsetshire set; but he consented to its inclusion at the urgent request of Chapman & Hall" (Sadleir p. 245). Sadleir pp. 246-8.

        Principles of Political Economy

Chicago: Callaghan and Company,, 1878. From the thirteenth (1877) German editoin. With additional chapters furnished by the author, for this first English and American edition, on paper money, international trade, and the protective system; and a preliminary essay on the historical method in political economy (from the French) by L. Wolowski, the whole translated by John J. Lalor A. M. 2 volumes, octavo. Original cloth, spines lettered gilt, black rules to covers and spines, coated endpapers. Ownership inscription to front free endpaper of each volume dated 1942. Spine ends and board edges lightly rubbed, endpaper to volume I creased; a very good copy. First English edition, published simultaneously in Chicago and New York, of Roscher's main work, originally published in German in 1854, which "became perhaps the most widely-read textbook of economics in Germany in the second half of the nineteenth century" (Blaug). "It analysed essentially the same topics as the classical economists - production, distribution and prices. Roscher was already strongly influenced by supply and demand approaches, but still determined the exchange value of a commodity by its cost of production. His theory of rent was Ricardian and his thinking about population development followed Malthusian patterns. Differing from classical textbooks, Roscher supplemented the theoretical analysis with a historical description - the reader finds the history of rent, interest and wages, of population development, of the prices of necessary and luxury commodities, and of luxury in general" (Schefold in The New Palgrave).

A spectacular collection of three Horse in Motion photographs.

San Francisco: Morse&#146;s Gallery 1878 - Three albumen prints (approx. 8 x 3 1⁄2 in.), on original publisher&#146;s mounts printed on recto and verso, each a composite image of 6 or 12 photographs. Light wear and soiling, some fading and foxing. Very good condition. Eadweard Muybridge&#146;s photographs of horses in motion are icons in the history of photography. Stanford was in part motivated by the &#147;unsupported transit&#148; controversy&#151;are there moments when all four of a horse&#146;s feet leave the ground while trotting or galloping? On June 15, 1878, Muybridge demonstrated his method using a battery of twelve cameras whose shutters were released by a series of tripwires as the horse raced down the track. Over the next few days Muybridge made six sequences of various horses in motion. &#147;Muybridge&#146;s Horse in Motion grids were the most sensational photographs of their day. Contemporaneous accounts describe crowds gathering outside shop windows in which they were displayed&#148; (Prodger in Encyclopedia of Nineteenth Century Photography). The six photographs in the series are listed on the mounts: Mahomet cantering, Occident trotting, three views of Abe Edgington trotting, and Sallie Gardner running. Muybridge announces that six &#147;series&#148;&#151;meaning a single print containing a series of photographs of a horse&#151;&#147;are now published.&#148; Individual photographs appear for sale occasionally, but groups are quite rare. We offer three of the six, the largest group we have ever seen for sale. &#147;Muybridge&#146;s 1878-79 experiments were the first photographs to record such specific information about the attitudes of animals and people in motion&#148; (Brookman, Eadweard Muybridge). The printed captions provide a wealth of detail. One states in small part, &#147;The negatives of these photographs were made of intervals of twenty- seven inches of distance, and about the twenty-fifth part of a second of time; they illustrate consecutive positions assumed in each twenty-seven inches of progress during a single stride of the mare. The vertical lines were twenty-seven inches apart; the horizontal lines represent elevations of four inches each. The exposure of each negative was less than the two thousandth part of a second.&#148; &#147;Not only did the sequences of photographs dissect rapid motion, they also presented a mechanical, scientific view of action the human eye simply could not decode on its own&#148; (Brookman). Muybridge issued these photographs to document and promote his accomplishment. A series of drawings from the photographs appeared in Scientific American, and La Nature in Paris published five of the sequences.Muybridge&#146;s studies of animals in motion culminated in the publication of his Animal Locomotion in 1888. This is an outstanding series of photographs representing a milestone in the history of photography. The collection comprises: 1. The Horse in Motion &#147;Sallie Gardner,&#148; owned by Leland Stanford; running at a 1.40 gait over the Palo Alto track, 19th June, 1878. Verso text copyright 1879. 2. The Horse in Motion. &#147;Mahomet,&#148; owned by Leland Stanford; cantering at 8 minute gait over the Palo Alto track, 18th June, 1878. 3. The Horse in Motion: &#147;Abe Edgington,&#148; owned by Leland Stanford; driven by C. Marvin, walking at a 15-minute gait over the Palo Alto track, 18th June 1878.
