MAPS (about 7) PRESENT IN THE BACK OF THE BOOK (with one having a minor tear)!!!! The complex relation between ancestor worship and Christianity in China is not merely a question of theory. It has long been a practical issue of great moment change among Christian missionaries. Indeed, the problem has bulked so large in the past that the events to which it gave rise stand out clearly in the pages of general history. There have been four major chief movements in the history of Christianity in China. There was the Nestorian, beginning in the seventh century; the Franciscan, which was a relatively brief episode chiefly of the early fourteenth century; the basic Roman Catholic movement beginning with the Jesuits in the sixteenth century; and the Protestant movement, beginning in the early nineteenth century and covering the span of this book. THIS BOOK IS A GREAT HISTORICAL RECORD OF THE PROTESTANT PERIOD IN A MAJOR AREA OF CHINA!!!! COMPETITIVE PRICING! RÉLIURE ANCIENNE ET MODÈRNE, RÉCUEIL DE 116 PLANCHES

Paris: Paul Daffis, 1878. contemporary half calf, five raised bands, top edge gilt, with original front wrapper bound-in at end. Bookbinding. small 4to. contemporary half calf, five raised bands, top edge gilt, with original front wrapper bound-in at end. viii, 8 pages followed by 116 full-page plates. First edition. (Mejer no.27; Brenni no.282). A collection of 116 photo engravings of the finest examples of French bookbinding produced from the 16th to 19th centuries. Compiled by one of France's most renowned bibliophiles, the reproductions portray works executed with lavish attention to detail by master bookbinders such as Padeloup, Clovis and Nicolas Eve, le Gascon, and Nicolas Derome. In addition, since these works of art belonged to notables such as Jean Grolier, François Ièr, Diane de Poitiers, Louis XIII, Mazarin, and Cosimo de Medicis, to name a few, their value rendered them inaccessible to the scrutiny of most bibliophiles. Therefore, through the precisely reproduced plates in this album, Brunet intended to give bibliophiles the opportunity to acquire a deeper knowledge of the details and artistry of the original bindings and also to appreciate the progress of the art through the centuries. In red, brown, or black-and-white, the plates are from the Bibliophile Français (1808 - 1873). Keyed to the plates is a descriptive table, of which thirty-one more important and distinctive works receive enhanced descriptions. Foreword, introduction and table handsomely printed with wide margins. Booklabel of Miss Ann Ingersoll Meigs who has signed and dated (December 1883) this copy on the half-title. Covers show wear around edges and tips with part of leather chipped away at the bottom of the spine. Has been skillfully rebacked with original leather spine laid down on newer matching leather. Free endpaper partially detached. Ownership inscription in pencil.

Narrative Of A Voyage To The Polar Sea During 1875-6 In H.M. Ships 'Alert' And 'Discovery'.

London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1878. - 2 Volumes. 8vo. pp. xl, 395; viii, 378 + 32(ads). with half-titles. 2 folding lithographed maps, 14 plates (1 coloured, incl. 6 mounted photographs) & 38 wood-engraved text illus. untrimmed in original black & gilt-stamped cloth (light wear to foot of one spine). First Edition. The British polar expedition of 1875-76, commanded by George Strong Nares, was to attempt to reach the North Pole via Smith Sound and Robeson Channel, and to explore the northern parts of Ellesmere Island and northwest Greenland. However, an outbreak of scurvy seriously eroded the health of the members of the sledging parties and they were forced to abandon the enterprise after one year. The two ships sailed through Davis Strait, Baffin Bay, Smith Sound, Kane Basin, Robeson and Kennedy Channels to Lincoln Sea, the Discovery wintering at Discovery Harbour in Lady Franklin Bay, and the Alert in Lincoln Bay, northern Ellesmere Island. On the sledging expeditions, Capt. A.H.Markham reached a new record north of 83?20'26", while Lt. Pelham Aldrich rounded Ellesmere Island and examined its northwest tip as far as Cape Albert Ernest. Appended are extensive notes on natural history, edited by H.W.Feilden, naturalist on the expedition. Arctic Bib. 12026A (incorrectly calling for 7 mounted photos). El de la rollona

Calcografía for the Real Academia, 1878. Goya's pitiless caricature of a grown up "mama's boy" Los Caprichos was Goya's first collection of completely original etchings. They were and remain startlingly original in style and frequently shocking in their satirical assaults. They are strikingly modern and are his most popular prints today, though they were received with little favor in 1799 when they first appeared for sale. But even within Goya's lifetime enthusiasm grew. El de la rollona is uncompromising in its mockery of the mama's boy who is dressed in baby clothes, has his fingers in his mouth and a look of terror in his eyes, though he's bearded and obviously strong. The nanny or mother grieves in the shadow behind him, so disappointed in his failure to become a man. Goya's textual comment about this engraving is: "Negligence, tolerance and spoiling make children capricious, naughty, vain, greedy, lazy and insufferable. They grow up and yet remain childish. Thus is nanny's little boy." The fourth edition of Caprichos , from which this print comes, was made about 1878, as witnessed by the beveled platemark and the "strong, absorbent, wove paper" and "dark umber ink". Harris, v. 1, 95-109; v.II, p. 74; Delteil 41; Hind p.253 - 5. Etching and aquatint. From the 4th edition of "Los Caprichos" - plate 4.

        ALS.

Paris, 17. IV. 1878. - 130 x 207 mm. 1 p. On printed letter-head of the "Laboratoire de Physique, Conservatoire des Arts & Métiers". Expressing his regrets but his return has been postponed and he will perhaps be absent form Paris for all the Easter week. - The experimental physicist Becquerel is noted for his work on magnetism. In 1840 he discovered the electrical currents produced during photochemical reactions and studied the intensity of light in such currents. Inventor of the phosphoroscope, he also engaged in spectral studies. It is amusing that Becquerel should still be using "Arts & Métiers" notepaper eighteen years after he had ceased to teach there. It was in 1878 that he was appointed Director of the Musaeum d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris.

In very good condition overall. . First Edition. McCorkle p. 311. Hofmann p. 156-157. Fuld p. 553. Sonneck Orchestral Music p. 55.& & "The Second Symphony in D op.73, composed less than a year after the completion of the First, is often described as its sunny counterpart. The work indeed radiates a warmth and tunefulness absent in parts of the earlier work. But as Brahms himself acknowledged, the Second Symphony also has a ‘melancholy’ side. The lyrical opening theme of the first movement unravels almost at once into a dark passage for timpani and trombones. The voice of melodic continuity is reasserted often in this movement, however, first by the violin melody that follows the unravelling and again by the second group and the large coda. The pensive slow movement, in B major and in a modified sonata form, is dominated by a motivically rich, metrically ambiguous main theme remarkable for its combination of tunefulness and developing variation."& & "The second half of the symphony distinctly brightens in mood, although it too contains sombre moments – often involving the trombones – that evoke the expressive world of the first two movements. The Allegretto recasts the traditional scherzo–trio alternation into a rondo-like structure that is one of Brahms's most original creations. Although the finale ends the symphony in a jubilant blaze of D major, it glances back at the mood of the earlier movements, especially in the haunting passage at the end of the development section (whose chains of descending 4ths Mahler recalled in his First Symphony) and in the syncopated episode for brass in the coda."
