Sydney in 1848: Illustrated by copper-plate engravings

Sydney: Gibbs, Shallard and Company, 1878. Quarto, with full page copper plate engravings throughout, half black roan with gilt lettering, bookplate of Henry White, very good copy. Important Australian architectural record. A very good facsimile of the scarce original. Joseph Fowles arrived in Sydney in 1838 and this is without doubt his most important work, providing remarkably detailed information on the buildings of mid-nineteenth-century Sydney. As Morton Herman puts it, 'the Sydney he records was a lovely colonial town of clean, chaste Georgian architecture. Whole streets were pleasant compositions of harmonious buildings, few of them over three stories high, all clearly designed, well mannered and an orderly delight to the eye…' (Foreword to the facsimile edition of 1963). Joseph Fowles' painstaking work captured the last moments of innocence, for Sydney was on the brink of change. The advantages brought about by the industrial revolution were affecting architecture everywhere: the shadow of Sydney's convict origin was fading and a new society was emerging. This copy has the original front wrapper bound in, stating the re-publication date of 1878. In this facsimile edition the title-page of the first edition of 1848 published by D. Wall is reproduced, hence the common confusion of the facsimile with the first edition.

Minutes of Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers

series to the 1882-83 series 1878 - Twenty-five leatherbound volumes with gilt titles to the spines, marble paper covered boards and 269 foldoutplates and four fold-out tables. A scarce set running complete from 1878 to 1883. Founded on 2 January 1818, the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) is an independent professional association, based in central London, representing civil engineers. Like its early membership, the majority of its current members are British engineers, but it also has members in more than 150 countries around the world. In 2008, its total membership stands at more than 80,000. The late 18th century and early 19th century saw the founding of many learned societies and professional bodies (for example, the Royal Society and the Law Society). Groups calling themselves civil engineers had been meeting for some years from the late 18th century, notably the Society of Civil Engineers formed in 1771 by John Smeaton (renamed the Smeatonian Society after his death). At that time, formal engineering was limited to military engineers, and in the spirit of self help prevalent at the time, the Institution of Civil Engineers was founded as the world's first professional engineering body. The initiative to found the Institution was taken in 1818 by three young engineers, Henry Robinson Palmer (23), James Jones (28) and Joshua Field (32), who organised an inaugural meeting on 2 January 1818, at the Kendal Coffee House in Fleet Street. The institution made little headway until a key step was taken - the appointment of Thomas Telford as the first President of the body. Greatly respected within the profession and blessed with numerous contacts across the industry and in government circles, he was instrumental in drumming up membership and getting a Royal Charter for ICE in 1828. This official recognition helped establish ICE as the pre-eminent organisation for engineers of all disciplines. After Telfords death in 1834, the organisation moved into premises in Great George Street in the heart of Westminster in 1839, and began to publish learned papers on engineering topics. Its members, notably William Cubitt, were also prominent in the organisation of the Great Exhibition of 1851. In some respects ICE was ahead of its time, providing a focus for engineers from other disciplines. Mechanical engineer and tool-maker Henry Maudslay was an early member and Joseph Whitworth presented one of the earliest papers it was not until 1847 that the Institution of Mechanical Engineers was established (with George Stephenson as its first President). By the end of the 19th century, ICE had introduced examinations for professional engineering qualifications to help ensure and maintain high standards among its members a role it continues today. Condition: The bindings are tight and firm with all covers and pages fully attached. There is some wear to the extremities including heavy rubbing to the leather and boards and some bumping to the tops and tails of the spines. The rear outer hinge of Volume IV of the 1880-81 and VolumeIII and IV of the 1789-80series is beginning to split at the bottom. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with the occasional handling mark and odd spot. In Volume III of 1882-83 seriesPlate 9 has been boundbefore Plate 8. Overall the volumes are in good only condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Odds and Ends. Vol. 1, Nos. 2 & 3

Mattoon, Il.: F.L. Horn. April and May, 1878. One quarto leaf folded to make four pages, apparently paginated with the previous issue: (1)6-8. A small stain on the first page, else fine. An "amateur" newspaper, on page 7 (or the third page of the newspaper) is an advertisement that reads as follows: "Base Ball Cards! 25 for 20 cts. Special rates to clubs. State position and name of club when ordering. Agents wanted! Send 3 ct. stamp for samples. Franklin L. Horn, Mattoon, Ills." Within our own little circle of baseball scholars and enthusiasts debate rages over the meaning of this little advertisement, with some convinced that this is an advertisement for business or trade cards, others that it indicates a previously unknown series of amateur baseball cards, and still others believing it was an advertisement for a stillborn project proposed by the printer, with no takers. The meaning of "baseball cards" is somewhat fluid. A few cabinet photographs were issued in the 1850s, and the sporting goods company Peck and Snyder issued a few cabinet photograph cards of teams in 1869-1870; but the first use of the term to indicate what we now consider "baseball cards" usually refers to mass produced player cards issued with tobacco products in the mid-1880s. Odds and Ends is an example of an "amateur newspaper," part of a movement that started around 1805 and continued, with fits and starts, until the Great Depression, with the "golden age" of the movement between 1870-1880, and beginning in 1867, with the invention of an inexpensive "novelty press." This item might provide a vital missing link to the study of early cards, or just be a dead-end in the evolutionary development of the hobby. At any rate, a fascinating and thought provoking item. .

Belle signature.

        Outrigger War Canoe Fijian Islands

1878 1878 - Cecil Gamlin “Outrigger War Canoe Fijian Islands” Signed and dated: “Cecil Gamlin. London Missionary Society. 1879.” Gouache watercolor on paper 8 1/2” x 13 1/4”; 19” x 24” framed (measurements in inches) Even a century after Captain Cook’s death the sense of adventure and exoticism with which Europeans regarded the South Pacific and the Pacific Islands in general had not waned. English missionaries fulfilled many roles as they traveled the globe, including that of providing visual documentation of what they encountered. Cecil Gamlin was a missionary and an artist who worked not just as an English emissary to the islanders, but endeavored to return to Europe with images of the natives that would make them more familiar, and less a people to be feared.
