        [Op. 73]. Zweite Symphonie (D dur) für Grosses Orchester... Partitur. [Full score]

      Berlin: N. Simrock [PN 8028]. 1878. Folio. Half dark red leather with marbled boards, titling gilt to spine. 1f. (title), 3-71 printed music, [i] (blank) pp. Engraved. With small music seller's handstamp (Novello, Ewer & Co., London) to lower margin of title page. Extensively annotated in pencil. Light browning to edges; scattered foxing. In very good condition overall. . First Edition. McCorkle p. 311. Hofmann p. 156-157. Fuld p. 553. Sonneck Orchestral Music p. 55."The Second Symphony in D op.73, composed less than a year after the completion of the First, is often described as its sunny counterpart. The work indeed radiates a warmth and tunefulness absent in parts of the earlier work. But as Brahms himself acknowledged, the Second Symphony also has a ‘melancholy’ side. The lyrical opening theme of the first movement unravels almost at once into a dark passage for timpani and trombones. The voice of melodic continuity is reasserted often in this movement, however, first by the violin melody that follows the unravelling and again by the second group and the large coda. The pensive slow movement, in B major and in a modified sonata form, is dominated by a motivically rich, metrically ambiguous main theme remarkable for its combination of tunefulness and developing variation.""The second half of the symphony distinctly brightens in mood, although it too contains sombre moments – often involving the trombones – that evoke the expressive world of the first two movements. The Allegretto recasts the traditional scherzo–trio alternation into a rondo-like structure that is one of Brahms's most original creations. Although the finale ends the symphony in a jubilant blaze of D major, it glances back at the mood of the earlier movements, especially in the haunting passage at the end of the development section (whose chains of descending 4ths Mahler recalled in his First Symphony) and in the syncopated episode for brass in the coda."         Is He Popenjoy? [Rare; An important part of Publishing History] TOGETHER WITH: The History of a Crime (The Testimony of an Eye-Witness) Also containing: Paul Knox, Pitman; Henriette, fragments of the newspaper of the Marquis de Boisguerny, MP; and Christine Brownlee's Ordeal

      New York: Harper & Brothers, 1878. First American edition. A Near Fine copy (with spectacular pages) of the first seven issues in Haper's Franklin Library series, including two highly notable American First Editions, those being Anthony Trollope's "Is He Popenjoy?" and Victor Hugo's "The History of a Crime / The Testimony of an Eye-Witness". The Franklin Square Library series was published by Harper to meet the large demand for literature at a low price. Usually selling for 10 or 15 cents a copy, the series eventually replaced Harper's Library of Select Novels Series and its Half-Hour Series. Trollope's "Is He Popenjoy" was the inaugural work in the Series, "Number 1", in the then-new format, and thus an important event in Publishing history. Of it Smith states: "This new series and its advertising logic sounded the death knell for collectors. First editions in this series are no longer books, but newspapers. Their fragility, format, and ephemeral makeup discouraged most buyers from keeping them.....few have survived." According to Smith, these issues are "rarely seen for sale and are usually found only in private collections and in certain research libraries." He describes "Is He Popenjoy?" as being "of the utmost rarity" and we expect that many other issues in the series, particularly the earliest ones, could be described in like manner. This copy includes all of Smith's State A advertisements published with "Is He Popenjoy?". Number 2 in the series was Hugo's "The History of a Crime", a work first completed by Hugo in 1852 but not presented to the public in print until 1877 (in France, with the first two - of four - volumes also being published in he UK that year). An historical novel, the work records the December 1852 coup d'etat effected by Napoleon III, the nephew and heir of Napoleon I and the then-outgoing President of the Second Republic (and the first President of France elected by democratic popular vote) after he was blocked by the Constitution and the Parliament from running for a second term as President. The coup made him Emperor of the Second French Empire and sent the pro-democracy Hugo into an eighteen-year exile. The work was written in the few months following Hugo's flight, but only published in 1877, when Hugo feared a similar takeover by Marshal Marie Esme Patrice Maurice de MacMahon, the first President of the Third Republic (who had obtained his office after the Second French Empire of Napoleon III collapsed and who had threatened the dissolution of the republican-dominated Chambre des deputes). Harper first published the novel serially and this volume presents the first American edition of the entire work. The volume also contains the first American editions of "Paul Knox, Pitman" by John Berwick Harwood (an English writer of about 20 novels best known for his ghost stories), "Henriette, fragments of the newspaper of the Marquis de Boisguerny, MP" by Ernest Daudet (a highly-prolific French writer and journalist and the elder brother of French novelist Alphonse Daudet), "Christine Brownlee's Ordeal" by the British author Mary Patrick, and two other works published anonymously. The seven works are housed within the Publisher's original three-quarter black leather binding with brown boards, the spine lettered and lined in gilt and the boards lined in gilt. The spine and outer board corners show rubbing, but within the pages, trimmed at the margins for inclusion in this volume, are in wonderful condition, being remarkably bright and clean and in better condition than any other sheets of any other title in the notoriously fragile Franklin Square Library newspaper format series that we ever have seen. These first American editions are EXCEEDINGLY RARE and present an extraordinary opportunity for the Trollope collector, the Hugo collector, and for the general collector of important publications in American literary history. Most collectors will never see the either this Trollope novel or this Hugo work, much less own one. The chance to own either of them certainly will not arise often, if at all, for the vast majority of collectors. AN EXTREMELY SCARCE TROLLOPE FIRST together with and EXTREMELY SCARCE HUGO FIRST. A COLLECTION-DISTINGUISHING ITEM OF THE UTMOST RARITY.

        La Fortification du Champ de Bataille

      Brussels, Librairie Militaire C. Muquardt, , 1878. Octavo, original purple cloth, title gilt to spine with elaborate panelling in gilt and black, upper board similarly decorated centred on a large tool of a trophy of arms, lower board panelled in black, all edges gilt, marl endpapers. 19 folding plates at the rear. Some light foxing to the fore-edges of the plates, which stand proud of the text-block, otherwise very good indeed. First edition. This appears to be in the de luxe binding with the "atlas de planches" bound in at the rear, and is certainly one of a few copies printed on Holland paper. Essentially the final revision and expansion of Brialmont's Fortification Improvisée of 1870 - "une simple conférence, écrite pour l'armée belge" - taking into account the unfolding events of the Russo-Turkish War, and developed into "une oeuvre arrivée à maturité, un traité complet." Brialmont was one of the most significant thinkers in the field in the latter part of the nineteenth century. A really lovely copy.

MAPS (about 7) PRESENT IN THE BACK OF THE BOOK (with one having a minor tear)!!!! The complex relation between ancestor worship and Christianity in China is not merely a question of theory. It has long been a practical issue of great moment change among Christian missionaries. Indeed, the problem has bulked so large in the past that the events to which it gave rise stand out clearly in the pages of general history. There have been four major chief movements in the history of Christianity in China. There was the Nestorian, beginning in the seventh century; the Franciscan, which was a relatively brief episode chiefly of the early fourteenth century; the basic Roman Catholic movement beginning with the Jesuits in the sixteenth century; and the Protestant movement, beginning in the early nineteenth century and covering the span of this book.         Lives of the Irish Martyrs [ Also, a very full and complete history of The Penal Laws]

      James Sheehy, New York 1878 - New York: James Sheehy, 1878. First Edition. Numerous engravings, fold-out hand-colored map. 9 3/8" x 6 1/2", 751 pp. Green cloth with decorative gilt imprinting, all edges gilt. Light shelf wear, moderate foxing and toning, small scale corner bumping. But for the foxing, Near Fine; as is, better than Very Good Plus. A very handsome copy. Certainly one of the best preserved examples of the sought-after Myles O'Reilly account of famed Irish martyrs, this copy still boasts robust hinges (a common point of failure with this hefty 751 page tome) and a bright, nearly flawless binding. The total absence of previous owner's marks and the virtually original condition of the fragile hand-colored foldout map make this a copy for the serious collector of higher grades. Replete with engravings from the Irish countryside - as well as a remarkable frontispiece engraving of Oliver Plunkett - and treating as it does some several hundred Irish figures, this is a seminal treatise on the subject.         DICK SAND;

      1878 - or, A Captain at Fifteen. A Novel. New York: George Munro, 1878. 2 pp undated ads. Original green cloth. First Edition in English of this tale originally published in France as UN CAPITAINE DE QUINZE ANS.~A whale hunt in the Pacific Ocean between New Zealand and the Americas ends in tragedy and Dick Sand, as the only surviving crew member, becomes captain, at fifteen years of age. Not possessing the full skills of a sailor, Dick tries to get the ship east to the South American coast. However, the cook on board has plans of his own and manages to get the ship diverted to eventually land in the country of Angola on the continent of Africa. The cook's plans involve killing Dick and selling the other passengers of the ship into slavery. [Kytasaari]~This tale was first published in English, in November 1878, by the American pirate publisher Munro -- both in a two-volume wrappered format and in this plain green cloth format ("the best manufactured of all Verne books published by Munro"). Sampson Low's authorized London edition was published the following month, in December, at the end of which month Charles Scribner's Sons also published their edition (both dated 1879). Both the Sampson Low and the Scribner editions were titled DICK SANDS (with a final "S").~This is a fine copy, virtually as new. Taves & Michaluk V018; Myers 15.         A History of Gibraltar and its sieges. With photographic illustrations, by J. H. Mann.

      Provost London 1878 - Second edition. 8vo. (22 x 16cm), pp. [v-viii], map, 280; with 16 photographs mounted on thick paper, captioned beneath image; occasional light spotting. Original blue cloth, upper cover and spine richly blocked in gilt, all edges gilt; spine fading, tail of spine slightly rubbed. Luxury edition of Gibraltaran history illustrated by sixteen albumen photographs in attractive contemporary cloth. A History of Gibraltar and its sieges has been consistently attributed to Frederic G. Stephens, the famed art critic and member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. It records Gibraltan history from the days of the Phoenicians until The Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779-1783), and concludes recounting a visit by Nelson "a week after the Battle of Trafalgar". It is illustrated with pasted in photographs by J. H. Mann depicting the renowned 'Rock of Gibraltar', coastal scenes and panoramic views of the area. This edition is a "presentation edition" (Gersheim) containing sixteen photographs, rather than standard editions which contained four, or sometimes only one. Two further editions were produced in 1879 and 1900 with the text completely rewritten and all photographs replaced by engravings, hence why this edition is sought-after.         The Consistency of the Axiom of Choice and of the Generalized Continuum-Hypothesis" [and] "Consistency-Proof for the Generalized Continuum-Hypothesis" [and] "The Independence of the Continuum Hypothesis, I-II" in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Volume 24, (1938), pp.556-557 and Volume 25 (1939), 220-224

      - TWO MILESTONE PAPERS ON THE FOUNDATIONS OF MATHEMATICS. Two volume first edition of Kurt Gödel's proof of the consistency of the axiom of choice and the generalized continuum hypothesis with the axiom of set theory. In 1878, German mathematician Georg Cantor put forth a hypothesis that said any infinite subset of the set of all real numbers can be put into one-to-one correspondence either with the set of integers or with the set of all real numbers ("There is no set whose cardinality is strictly between that of the integers and that of the real numbers"). The continuum problem, as Cantor's problem came to be know, was the first in Hilbert's famous list of mathematical problems, presented in an address in 1900. All attempts to prove or disprove Cantor's conjecture failed until 1938, when Kurt Gödel, in these papers, showed it was impossible to disprove the continuum hypothesis. "Gödel studied the relationship of the continuum hypothesis and the axiom of choice to basic set theory as formulated by the mathematicians Ernst Zermelo and Abraham Fraenkel. In 1940 Gödel showed that both the continuum hypothesis and the axiom of choice are consistent with the axioms of set theory. More precisely, he demonstrated that if the Zermelo-Fraenkel system without the axiom of choice is consistent, then the Zermelo-Fraenkel system with the axiom of choice is consistent, and that the continuum hypothesis is consistent with the Zermelo-Fraenkel system" (Ryan, Thinkers of the Twentieth Century, p. 212f). "Godel's result, joined to [Paul J.] Cohen's (1963-1964), set the stage for a whole new era in the theory of sets in which a host of problems of the consistency or independence of various conjectures in set theory relative to this or that set of axioms are being investigated by constructing models" (Shanker, Godel's Theorem in Focus, 66-67). CONDITION & DETAILS: Eaton: Mack Printing Company. 4to (10 x 7 inches; 250 x 175mm). Both volumes handsomely rebound in aged brown cloth (identical to original binding). Gilt-lettered and dated at the spine. Solidly and tightly bound, with both volumes set into a gilt-titled brown slipcase. New endpapers. Very good to near fine condition in every way.

        Through the Dark Continent,

      London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington,, 1878. or, the Sources of the Nile around the Great Lakes of Equatorial Africa and down the Livingstone River to the Atlantic Ocean. 2 volumes, octavo (219 x 136 mm). Original light brown pictorial sand grained cloth, titles and decorations to spines and front boards in black and gilt, pale yellow endpapers. Tinted lithographic portrait frontispiece to each, 32 engraved plates and numerous wood-engravings to text, 8 maps bound in, of which 2 folding, and 2 large folding maps in rear board pockets. Bookplate of Trinity House to pastedowns, bookplate and ink stamp of Michael G. Scott, Montagu, South Africa to front free endpapers, Volume I with contemporary gift inscription to front free endpaper and binder's ticket of Leighton Son and Hodge to rear pastedown of Volume I. Extremities slightly bumped and rubbed, a few small nicks to spine ends, minor mottling to rear boards, some gentle spotting to fore-edges, prelims lightly foxed, a few roughly opened folds, large folding maps a touch tanned with a few short splits. Volume I: inner hinges cracked, two loose leaves. A very good set. First edition of Stanley's account of his controversial Trans-African Expedition of 1874-7. Exploring equatorial Africa and, in particular, the Great Lakes regions, Stanley finally dispelled Livingstone's notion that the "Lualaba was the source of the Nile and vindicated Speke's claim that the lake seen on his expedition with Burton was indeed one of the sources" (Howgego). While the success in "solving the remaining mysteries of African geography" (ODNB) brought Stanley great acclaim, this was tempered by criticism of the militarisation of his expedition. Following Samuel Baker's lead, the Trans-African Expedition involved "the show and sometimes use of military-like force to counteract local opposition" (Newman, Imperial Footprints: Henry Morton Stanley's African Journeys, p.xix).

      1878. 1 page autograph letter signed, 5" x 7-7/8", in purple ink, toning/offset to edges on 3 sides, Christ Church dated May 25, 1878 to Herbert which reads: "Thanks for your critique on "Word Links". I send the new edition. Your objection to choosing a doublet at random, as "disheartening", must be set against that raised by the Guilford party, that to make out Chains made up from you robbed the game of all interest, & that the only ones they cared to try were words chosen at random. From my experience I should say the chance of an impossible doublet is, with words of 3 letters, next to nothing, 4 letters, 1/100, 5 letters, 1 / 20. Yrs Afft CLD"

Series II (Vol. II, 1880), Pp. 204 plus 48 fine plates.Professor Thomas Meehan, Editor of the Gardeners' Monthly, which was to become Meehan's Monthly by the late nineteenth century, satisfied American's burgeoning interest in domestic horticulture with this work, the first comprehensive presentation of the native plant species. This varied treatise, the first of its kind, was produced for a wide circle of gardeners, not the strict horticulturist or botanist, and is aptly presented by American's venerable printing firm of L. Prang and Co. in Boston. The democratic medium of chromolithography is best utilized to illustrate the varied richness of the multitude of flowers, both wild and cultivated in America's 19th Century gardens and landscapes.         ALBUM DE PERNAMBUCO E SEUS ARRABALDES

      Pernambuco [i.e. Recife], Brazil: F.H. Carls, [1878].. Chromolithographic titlepage, prospectus leaf (tipped in at left edge to inner margin of first plate), followed by forty-eight chromolithographs. Oblong quarto. Original green cloth, front board and spine stamped in gilt, boards also stamped in blind. Cloth with slight wear at corners, spine ends, and along the joints; stain in front board near the foredge. Endpapers printed on poor paper. Light scattered foxing to the plates. Very good overall. In a cloth clamshell case, leather label. An exceptionally rare Brazilian colorplate book, the first copy we have encountered. The handsome chromolithographs show sights and scenes in the region of Pernambuco (now called Recife), in northeastern Brazil, and were drawn by Franz Heinrich Carls, who also published the work. Born in Germany, Carls arrived in Brazil in 1858, aged thirty, and modified his name to Francisco Henrique Carls. Responsible for the lithographs in Luis Schlappriz's MEMORIA DE PERNAMBUCO (1863), the present series of views is Carls' greatest achievement. With regard to the detailed quality of the images, Correa do Lago supposes that the chromolithographs were based on contemporary photographs. Carls states in the prospectus (tipped into this copy) that he is producing this book in response to the encouragement of a number of friends who have sought a volume of views of places and buildings around Pernambuco that would reflect the recent growth and improvements in the region. He goes on to explain that he intends to produce forty or fifty plates, and that they would be issued by subscription in groups of three or four views at a time. The views include the capital city of Recife, its various neighborhoods, as well as nearby Olinda, Santo Agostinho de Cabo, and Jaqueira. There are also views of the Caxanga road, Rua Barao da Victoria, Rua 1 de Marco, canals, bridges, and busy ports and harbors. There are many views of notable buildings, the state assembly, the presidential palace, churches, railroad lines, large public squares, the main commercial street in Olinda, theatres, gymnasiums, large homes, hospitals, etc. Many of the images reflect the early Dutch influence of the region, since the Dutch West India Company controlled the area for almost a century in the 17th and 18th century and founded the city. They started the sugar plantations which continued to dominate the region, and helped form vast fortunes among the planter class. The overall impression is of a region of progress and wealth, with grand homes and public buildings, broad avenues, and a lively civic and commercial life. OCLC lists only one copy of this title, at the Oliveira Lima Library at Catholic University in Washington, DC. Their copy contains fifty leaves of plates (Correa do Lago states that the number of plates varies, with some copies having as few as fifteen or twenty) but no prospectus leaf, and they give a date of 1860, apparently based on the fact that Carls arrived in Pernambuco just two years earlier. Correa do Lago gives a publication date of 1873, but the prospectus in our copy is dated August 1878, hence our attribution of that date. Not in Borba de Moraes. "O colorido e bastante tenue, o que contribuiu para o atrativo desta extensa serie de imagens que formam uma das reportagens visuais mais abragentes realizadas no periodo sobre qualquer cidade brasileira" - Correa do Lago. This is the first copy we have encountered in more than three decades of active interest in such books. Extremely rare and desirable, with lovely chromolithographs of Brazil. CORREA DO LAGO, BRASILIANA ITAU, pp.328-29. OCLC 40949947.
