        Outrigger War Canoe Fijian Islands

1878 1878 - Cecil Gamlin “Outrigger War Canoe Fijian Islands” Signed and dated: “Cecil Gamlin. London Missionary Society. 1879.” Gouache watercolor on paper 8 1/2” x 13 1/4”; 19” x 24” framed (measurements in inches) Even a century after Captain Cook’s death the sense of adventure and exoticism with which Europeans regarded the South Pacific and the Pacific Islands in general had not waned. English missionaries fulfilled many roles as they traveled the globe, including that of providing visual documentation of what they encountered. Cecil Gamlin was a missionary and an artist who worked not just as an English emissary to the islanders, but endeavored to return to Europe with images of the natives that would make them more familiar, and less a people to be feared.         OSSERVAZIONI ATRONOMICHE E FISICHE SULL'ASSE DI ROTAZIONE E SULLA

1878 - SCHIAPARELLI, G. V. "OSSERVAZIONI ASTRONOMICHE E FISICHE SULL'ASSE DI ROTAZIONE E SULLA TOPOGRAFIA DEL PIANETA MARTE: fatte nella Reale Specola di Brera in Milano coll'equatoriale di Merz durante l'opposizione del 1877." First printing. Contained in Atti della R. Accademia dei Lincei, Anno CCLXXV, 1877-1878. Serie Terza. Memorie Della Classe Di Scienze Fisiche, Matematiche e Naturali. Volume II. Roma: Coi Tipi del Salviucci, 1878. Illustrated with five lithographs, including a double-page areographic map, a map of the southern hemisphere, and a color plate showing four views of Mars. pp. 308-439. Text and plates are clean and fresh, although lightly toned at edges. Thick 4to. (1145 pp.) bound in green pebbled cloth, with series title stamped at spine. Small chips at crown and the lower joint is just starting; light soiling overall. During the great opposition of Mars in 1877 Schiaparelli observed the planet thoroughly using a Merz refractor; this exceptional instrument allowed Schiaparelli to detect even the smallest surface features which had been overlooked in earlier oppositions by larger telescopes. In drawing a complete picture of the areographic positions of the fundamental points for the construction of an accurate map, he stated that the interpretation of the phenomena observed on Mars was still largely hypothetical, varying among observers even when they saw the same details. He was the first to classify the features as "seas" and "continents." (But it was Secchi who first used the term "canal" in his observations of 1859.) Although Schiaparelli understood that the features he observed on Mars were stable, he was cautious in drawing conclusions on the nature of the surface of the atmosphere until he could establish that the seas, continents, and canals were identifiable with analogous terrestrial forms.         A LOS HABITANTES DE CALABAZAR, CEJA DE PABLO, QUEMADO DE GIIINES Y RANCHO VELOZ [caption title].

[Cuba]. Sept. 18, . 1878 - Broadside, 12 1/2 x 8 3/4 inches. Chip in upper left corner, not affecting text. Small tears in all edges, several repaired by tape on verso. Good. A rare and fascinating Cuban political broadside calling for an end to armed struggle but a beginning to a "struggle for ideas" at the conclusion of Cuba's "Ten Years' War," the battle for independence from Spain that lasted between 1868 and 1878. The broadside is addressed to the residents of the region around the north-central coast of Cuba, some 150 miles east of Havana. The text of the broadside is signed in print by Gabriel Aguilera y Zayas, Secretary of the Partido Union Constitucional (PUC), one of the two main political parties that developed out of the Ten Years' War. The PUC, which was a conservative pro-Spanish party led by prominent Creoles, sought a measure of local political autonomy while favoring continued Spanish control over Cuba. The text exhorts Cubans to partake in the ideological struggle that would succeed the armed rebellion, and urges them not to fall into lethargy but to continue the battle of ideas against radicals seeking independence from Spanish colonial rule. Due to their ephemeral nature, as well as the climate of the Caribbean, any such Cuban broadsides are scarce. No copies of this broadside are located on OCLC. Important evidence of the political factionalism and the strength of pro- Spanish sentiment in Cuba in the late 19th century. Rare, and possibly unique.

The Works of Thomas de Quincey

Edinburgh - Adam and Charles Black 1878 - A uniformly bound collection of the essays of Thomas de Quincey. Fourth edition. Illustrated throughout withtwelve plates (collated complete). Confessions of an English Opium-Eater (1821) is an autobiographical account about his laudanum (opium and alcohol) addiction and its effect on his life. The Confessions was the first major work De Quincey published and the one which won him fame almost overnight. . . The Confessions maintained a place of primacy in De Quincey's literary output, and his literary reputation, from its first publication; it went through countless editions, with only occasional intervals of a few years, and was often translated. Since there was little systematic study of narcotics until long after his death, De Quincey's account assumed an authoritative status and actually dominated the scientific and public views of the effects of opium for several generations. Bookplate of H. W. Eyres to front pastedowns. Complete in sixteen volumes. Condition: In blue cloth bindings. Externally sound, though wih some marks and bumping. Four hinges strainedInternally, generally firmly bound, althoughbinding strained in places (particularly to volume I). Pages are bright, though with some scattered patches of foxing throughout. The first and only volume (nothing else was issued) consists of 3 parts: "Folk laws of Russians", "Folk laws of the Native people of the Asian Russia", and "Notes on the legal laws". The second part is especially interesting for its detailed descriptions of the folk laws of the Arctic peoples like the Yakuts, Laplanders, Samoyeds and Karelians as well as the Kirgiz. Apart from precise descriptions of the laws the authors give quite interesting accounts of manners and customs of these native people, their food and dwellings, clothes, occupations, family relations, religion, holidays etc. The work was executed by the special Commission at the Ethnography Department of Russian Geographical Society. The editor of the book was the Secretary of the Commission Paul Matveev (1844- ca. 1900), Russian lawyer, censor and publicist, specialized in Slavonic history. He published several books - about Folk laws in Samara region (1877), Bulgarian history (1887), life of writer Nikolay Gogol (1894) and others, as well as numerous articles in Russian historian magazines and Russian version of Brokhaus encyclopaedia.         Res. and Farm (100 Acres) of L.E. Osgood, Centerville, Alameda Co., CAL. - Res. and Farm of Ashley Cameron, Centerville, Alameda Co., CAL.

Oakland, California 1878 - A hand-colored lithograph in superb condition with township maps of Pleasanton, Haywards Park Homesdtead Union, Washington Corners and Vallejo Mills on the reverse, from the, ‘Official Historic Atlas Map of Alameda County, California. Compiled, Drawn and Published from Personal Examinations and Surveys by Thompson & West. Oakland, CAL 1878’. Sheet size: 13 ¾”x17 ½”. Thomas H. Thompson, formerly Captain Thomas, began his career preparing maps and atlases of Illinois and Iowa counties. At various times of his life he was in partnership with several different men, two of them, Louis Everts and Alfred Andreas, were old acquaintances from his army days. In 1870 Thompson and Everts began publishing atlases, releasing in that year what they called “combination atlas maps.” In the 1870 atlases, lithographic illustrations were placed at the rear of the volumes. After 1870 the illustrations were interleaved with township maps throughout the atlases. The atlases were sold by subscription by traveling salesmen. Thompson and Everts dissolved their partnership in the early 70s and in 1875 Thompson migrated to California. There he published atlases of Sonoma County (1877), Fresno County (1891), and Tulare County (1892). In partnership with West, he issued atlases of Santa Clara County (1875), Alameda County (1878) and Solano County (1878). All are illustrated with lithographic views and sketches similar to those in the atlases of mid-western counties with a splendid array of lithographed plates showing the farms, houses, and other features of the settlements of Alameda County. ***If you frame up this item with Arader Galleries you can take a 50% discount off the listed price of this work of art.***

        Is HE POPENJOY? A Novel.

Chapman & Hall,, London: 1878 - Another Trollope 'pot-boiler', which "hinges on an inheritance plot". Yada, yada, yada, surprize (!) ". all comes well." Perhaps of most interest to today's reader is "Trollope's blistering prejudiced satire on the emergent women's movement and their absurb leaders, the German Baroness Banmann and the American Doctor Olivia Q. Fleabody." [Sutherland, Victorian Fiction].When Sadleir first published his Trollope bibliography in 1928, Popenjoy was not considered by him to be a truly 'scarce' book, except in Fine condition, for he noted that most of the intial print run went to libraries. So we feel confident, here 83 years later, concluding that this set is one of the nicest offered in recent history. Spines darkened. Hinges to Vols I & III professionally, and unobtrusively, strengthened. PO book labels to front paste-down. All-in-all, a quite nice VG+ triple-decker, and quite scarce thus.         [Photographs]: The Secretary of the Interior and Chiefs of Bureaus

1878. Original photographs by the pioneering Civil War-era photographer Mathew Brady of the Secretary of the Interior and Chiefs of Bureaus. Nine original albumen portraits of the members of the 1878 Interior Bureau and one photograph of the Bureau's headquarters building in Washington, DC. All are oval shaped, measuring about 4" x 5" with the exceptions of the portrait of the Secretary, which is 6" x 8", and that of the building, 7.25" x 5". All of the photographs are tipped-onto a large card sheet 20.5" x 27.5", glazed and framed in gilt-decorated wooden frame to 24" x 31". With hand-lettered text, possibly a unique production. The bottom of the headquarters photo is hand-lettered "Brady -- New York & Washington, D.C." Each official has Signed below his image including the Secretary of the Interior (Carl Schurz). Most of the other officials depicted, and who have signed the piece, had served as military officers in the Civil War (often as Generals). They are the Chief Clerk (George M. Lockwood), the Commissioner of Indian Affairs (Ezra A. Hayt), the Assistant Secretary (Alonzo Bell), the Commissioner of Patents (Ellis Spear), the Commissioner of the General Land Office (James A. Williamson), the Commissioner of Education (John Eaton), the Assistant Attorney General (E.M. Marble) and the Commissioner of Pensions (J.A. Bentley). Some light soiling and damp-staining to the card stock mount but the photographs appear unaffected. The Department of the Interior was created in 1849 and had "...a wide range of responsibilities entrusted to it: the construction of the national capital's water system, the colonization of freed slaves in Haiti, exploration of western wilderness, oversight of the District of Columbia jail, regulation of territorial governments, management of hospitals and universities, management of public parks, and the basic responsibilities for Indians, public lands, patents, and pensions. In one way or another all of these had to do with the internal development of the Nation or the welfare of its people." Presumably either unique or one of very few produced. .

The Late Dr. Charles Beke?s Discoveries of Sinai In Arabia And Midian. With Portrait Geological, Botanical, And Conchological, Reports, Plans, Map, And Thirteen Wood Engravings

Trübner & Co., London 1878 - xviii, [2], 606, [2] pp. Sm. 4to. Red pebbled cloth, boards ruled in gilt, gilt illustration on front board, edges beveled, all edges gilt, brown endpapers. Illus. with port. frontis, 13 wood engravings, two plates of geological diagrams, and one folding map. Errata slip tipped in. Narrative of the 1874 expedition of Charles Tilstone Beke (1800-1874), an English explorer and Biblical scholar, to Egypt in order to determine the real position of Mount Sinai which he thought to be a volcano. The first three chapters were written by Beke with the entire work edited by his wife. It is perhaps his most important book. "Dr. Beke treats of the traditional Mount Sinai, and its rivals within the Peninsula of Pharau; of the non-identity of the Mltzrulm of Scripture with the Egypt of profane history, its position, and that of the I*and of Midian, and of the dynasties of Manetho, and especially those of the shepherd kings, or Mitzrites. The account of the expedition Itself, and of Dr. Beke's sojourn In Egypt, is given in Dr. Beke's very characteristic letters on his last journey." Provenance: Library of the Bangor Theological Seminary (their gift bookplate) [from Library of] Roswell Dwight Hitchcock (his signature dated 1879). Hitchcock (1817-1887) was a pastor, educator, and vice president of the American Geographical Society. Blackmer 109. Blackmer Sale 1150. Hilm: Literature of Egypt and the Soudan I, p. 58.         FLOWERS OF PASSION

London: Provost & Co., 1878.. Sq. octavo. Original black cloth, decorated with skull, crossbones, lyre and vines in gilt on upper board, a.e.g. Rebacked at an early date, with the original backstrip laid down, with attendant reinforcement at endsheet gutters. Edges a bit worn, faint ringmark on upper board, still a good copy of a book most often seen in less than spectacular condition. Early cloth slipcase (a bit worn at tips) First edition of the author's first book (the existence of the chimerical WORLDLINESS having long eluded reliable confirmation). This copy is the variant with all edges gilt (no priority established). From the library of collector Thomas Hutchinson, with his book label. Tipped in is a very good literary autograph letter, signed, (3pp, 8vo, 5 Kings Bench Walk, Temple, 14 April, 1893) from Moore to an unidentified recipient (presumably Hutchinson), writing out three stanzas of verse from Moore's "The Strike at Arlingford" at the recipient's request, complimenting his correspondent's poetry and berating his own, including this book: "I am sorry that you possess my earliest literary sin. The ideal man of letters ought only to publish three or four books, and to spend ten years upon each. I am entirely out of sympathy with this scribbling century . . . I have long since given up writing verse; but the other day I had to write some for my play 'The Strike at Arlingford'. 'The night's as soft as a girl / And the old trees gently incline / To her...' ...I am afraid the verse I write now is no better than the verse I wrote when a boy ... But since you have the wretched volume, I shall feel obliged if you'll copy out the poem entitled 'A Ballad of a Lost Soul' and send it to me. . . ." FLOWERS OF PASSION was never reprinted and according to Hone (p. 69), following highly unfavorable reviews and on the advice of a friend, Mrs. William Rossetti, Moore withdrew the book, which had been published at his expense. Five of the poems are reprinted in PAGAN POEMS, three in revised form (see Gilcher p. 2). GILCHER A1.
