The Pyrotechnist's Treasury; Or Complete Art of Making Fireworks.

Chatto & Windus, London 1878 - This copy is ex libris, but in this case, that seems to have been a blessing, rather than a curse. The front endpaper bears the library duplicate / discard stamp (dated 1971 ). Internally, this copy appears unread, and is bright and clean.         Broadside announcing a "Lecture on the Telephone by Professor Himes. Rheem's Hall, Thursday, June 13th [1878]"

1878. Printed broadside. Very good condition apart from some mild offsetting, a small water stain in the top right-hand corner, and slight discolouration of the paper due to age. A rare broadside advertising a lecture accompanied by one of the first ever public broadcasts of music over the telephone. On June 13, 1878, Charles Francis Himes, amateur photographer and erudite Professor of Natural Sciences at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania, delivered a lecture on the nature and function of the newly invented telephone, which had been patented only two years before by Alexander Graham Bell. As this historical broadside publicizes, Himes' lecture included a demonstration of the telephone's startling capabilities in which music was broadcast through the telephone line by a Professor G. H. Barker at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Unlike its revolutionary predecessor the telegraph, the telephone made remote audio communication feasible and can thus be considered a precursor of the modern radio. During the 1870s and 1880s, its unprecedented capabilities were exploited, and the device was used to disseminate news and entertainment on an experimental basis. Although the first music concerts transmitted by telephone date to the late 1870s, regular, on-going entertainment broadcast services were not truly established until the 1890s in Paris, London and Hungary. Among the first on-going services in America were the Telephone Herald in Newark, New Jersey and Tel-musici in Wilmington, Delaware, both of which were established in the early 1900s. Tel-musici operated by subscription and distributed phonographic music over the telephone lines. Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Charles Francis Himes (1838-1918) studied at the New Oxford Collegiate and Medical Institute in Adams County, Pennsylvania before transferring to Dickinson College in 1853. After graduating from Dickinson in 1855, he taught natural science and mathematics at a number of institutions including the Wyoming Conference Academy, Baltimore Female College, and Troy University. In 1863, Himes enrolled in the graduate program at the University of Giessen in Germany, from which he earned a PhD in 1865. He was then appointed Professor of Natural Sciences at Dickinson College, where he remained until his retirement in 1896. Himes was a devoted faculty member at Dickinson, serving as school president between 1888 and 1889 and secretary and treasurer to the Board of Trustees from 1868 to 1896. He significantly enhanced the college's science curriculum and founded its first Scientific Society in 1867. His academic pursuits were not, however, limited to his position at Dickinson, and he was an active member of numerous external societies including the American Philosophical Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Cumberland County Historical Society, and the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, where he frequently lectured. In 1858, Himes began to pursue his burgeoning interest in photography and consequently joined the Pennsylvania Photographic Society and Amateur Photographic Exchange Club in the early 1860s. In addition to exhibiting some of his work, he taught photography classes during the summers at Mountain Lake Park, Maryland.

London: Trubner & Co., 1878. First edition, and A PRESENTATION COPY, with a formal presentation certificate "Presented by the Author to James Caird Esq C.B. &c &c" loosely inserted. Sir Thomas Bazley, first baronet (1797-1885), was an extremely successful cotton spinner and politician from Bolton in Manchester. He used his wealth to encourage secular education of his fellow Lancastrians. He took "an active part in Manchester's bitter educational politics, supporting its model secular school while acting as an important proponent of a national system of education, ultimately realized in the Education Act of 1870" (A. C. Howe for DNB). It is likely that he became acquainted with Sir James Caird (1816-1892), agriculturist and writer, through the latter's interest in importing cotton: first from America and after the American Civil War, from India.         Hannibal's Man and Other Tales

Albany: The Argus Company, Printers. 1878. First. First edition. Octavo. Original beveled edge decorated green cloth. A trifle rubbed, near fine in a good example of the exceptionally rare dustwrapper. The jacket has moderate overall chipping, and has been professionally reinforced internally at the folds but has no other restoration (i.e. paper added). Housed in a custom full morocco clamshell case. Accompanied by a signed note on the stationary of bibliographer and science fiction dealer L.W. Currey loosely inserted: "Regarding Kip's Hannibal's Man (1878), I know of no earlier dust jacket for a science fiction book. L.W. Currey." Mr. Currey also confirmed that he knew of no other jacketed copy of this title. Collects six stories including the title fantasy, several Christmas ghost stories, and the important science fiction novel, "The Secret of Apollonius Septrio," a tale of the evolution of man and the fate of a scientist who discovers a means to prolong human life and suffers a bizarre fate in the far future. According to Barron, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 952: "...one of the most imaginative early science fiction stories of evolution and one-way time travel." Hannibal's Man is a fantasy about a couple on vacation in Switzerland who discover a Carthaginian frozen in a glacier; the Carthaginian is revived and visits modern-day Carthage and Rome. He is overly emotional and prone to violence, and wants to buy the man's wife. Eventually, [spoiler alert] the Carthaginian falls into a crevasse and is refrozen. Although considered by some as a fantasy it is referenced in Bleiler as a very early "sleeper awakes" story. Bleiler 1232, Clareson Science Fiction in America 464. An uncommon tile, previously unknown in jacket, and by all evidence the earliest science fiction novel to appear in a dust jacket. .

The Geometry and Optics of Ancient Architecture, Illustrated By Examples from Thebes, Athens and Rome

Williams and Norgate, London & Edinburgh 1878 - Elephant folio, 58 x 39 cm. 55 lithographs (12 double-page, 10 chromolithographs). Architect and mathematician; first to suggest entasis in Greek buildings. He joined the architectural firm of John Nash (1752-1835) where he quickly became Nash's favorite pupil. In 1830 he toured Europe in order to study the architectural monuments. While in Athens in 1832 he observed that the lines of the Parthenon were not the strict rectilinear ones, but were in fact bent to make the building appear more even from a distance. He observed similar configurations at a temple in Thebes. Quoting Plato and other sources, Pennethorne showed the intentionality of the Greek temple design. First few leaves remargined at fore-edges, overall a clean copy. Recased in modern cloth. Near fine [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The three finely printed folding maps include the famous Gerritsz world map showing the discoveries of Quiros in the form of a very large Southern Continent below New Guinea and the Solomons. This facsimile of the Dutch edition is followed by a typeset version of the Latin edition of 1613 and the English translation typeset as a separate work, with its own title-page (Ferguson records this last part as a separate work as 9885b, recording the work described here as 9885a).

Cricket and Football Times. The Australian Eleven ... Special Australian Number, with Photograph

London: September, 1878. Magazine of eight pages measuring 287 x 220mm, with onlaid sepia photograph of the Australian cricketers measuring 88 x 114 mm; a few leaves slightly chipped at the bottom edge yet fine and fresh overall. The "Special Australian Number, with Photograph", devoted to the accomplishments of the touring team of 1878, the first such squad to visit England, and the series during which Frederick "Demon" Spofforth made his name by demolishing the Marylebone Cricket Club at Lord's on 27 May 1878.Certainly the highlight is the photograph of the team tipped on, as issued, to the front page. Looking - it has to be said - rather like a dour bunch of convicts in their striped coats and matched beanies, the Australian eleven and their coach Conway pose casually on benches. Described in the text as 'a gallant little band from far-away Australia' on 'their first visit to this country', the entire piece is devoted to their exploits, with notes on all of their matches and short biographical notes on each of the main eleven; Spofforth, who captured the imagination of the English sporting public, given a slightly longer entry.A scarce piece, especially in such fine original condition.

An uncommon tile, previously unknown in jacket, and by all evidence the earliest science fiction novel to appear in a dust jacket. .

        Suggestions in Floral Design.

      - London, Cassell [1878]. Folio modern half morocco (original decorated cloth front panel bound in at the end); 52pp and 52 chromolitho plates (including the title and end leaf). Some minor flaws: a stain in the bottom margin of the last couple of leaves of text, a couple of rumpled page edges and some repairs to tissue guards; stil rather good, clean and unfoxed. Hulme is mostly remembered as an art-botanist and ornamental encyclopaedist and perhaps his name has been blackened by dreary, usually incomplete, sets of 'Familiar Wild Flowers' choking the bookshops of the world. His skill as designer has been unjustly neglected and this, his most exciting book, makes that clear. The influence of his teacher and colleague Christopher Dresser is obvious in the forms and flat bright colours but that is no curse. The accompanying text is plain and helpful and the plates are beautifully printed by Dupuy of Paris. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Bird's eye view of the city of Hallowell, Kennebec Co., Maine 1878. A. Ruger, del.

      J. J. Stoner, Madison, Wis 1878 - id#: 78f3206H title: Bird's eye view of the city of Hallowell, Kennebec Co., Maine 1878. A. Ruger, del. artist: A. Ruger size: 16x 28 inches date : 1878 condition: very good condition, no tears, framed, very good color Ruger, A. CREATED/PUBLISHED Madison, Wis., J. J. Stoner [1878] Engraved many years after Martha Ballard's time, Ruger's illustration nevertheless shows how Hallowell's hills rise from the Kennebec River valley, leaving almost no flat ground. By 1878, farmers had cleared even the steepest slopes. In Martha's day, there would have been many more trees and fewer buildings. Commercial ships ply the Kennebec in this engraving as they had a century earlier, but for the appearance of a steamboat in the lower right. Notice also the buildings clustered along the riverbank, despite frequent seasonal floods.
