Camp Life and Sport in South Africa: Experiences of Kaffir Warfare with the Cape Mounted Rifles

London: Chapman & Hall, 1878. 1st. Original cloth. 8vo. xiii, 258 pp. 4 color lithographs (including frontispiece with tissue guard). Publisher's green cloth, black ruling and gilt illustration & lettering. A very good copy (light rubbing to extremities & boards; owner name; shelfwear); a nice copy. An informative and lively account of a soldier's experiences in the Eighth (1850-1853) and greatest of the wars between White and Black on the Cape eastern frontier. The author, a Cape Mounted Rifleman, served throughout the hostilities, and writes revealingly of the joys, the hardships and the dangers of campaigning in an ever-troubled border region and of the day-to-day life of a colonial officer. The military reminiscences are enhanced, as H. C. Hummel says in his admirable Foreword, 'by the clarity, detail and humour of Lucas's observations as raconteur, hunter, angler and, above all, naturalist . . . Those who know the Eastern Cape and its historic hinterland will recognise familiar landmarks. (Books of Zimbabwe).

      O. O. u. D.. 2 SS. auf gefalt. Bogen. Tinte auf gedr. Notenpapier. Folio..

Kitzur Haggadah leleil Pesach Family Service for the Eve of Passover [Pesah hagada haggada hagadah]

Text revised by Jastrow, thus creating an early Reform version of the traditional Seder. The rules and instructions are in English. This is a Reform Judaism version. Page 27 has the song "All abroad praise our God," with the note that it is to be sung to the melody of Adir Hu. In his Haggadot bibliography Yudlov notes that he is basing the entry for this Haggadah on a copy in the Floresheim collection. Original wrappers bound in new leather binding.         Canters in Crampshire

London- Chatto and Windus, 1878 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A collection of lithographs of hunting scenes by Georgina Bowers. Comprised of Gallops from Gorseborough, Scrambles with Scratch-Packs, and Studies with Staghounds. By far the most important lady artist who ever worked for Punch was Miss Georgina Bowers (for some years now Mrs. Bowers-Edwards). Miss Bowers was a humorist, with very clear and happy notions as to what fun should be, and how it should be transferred to a picture. Her long career began in 1866, and thenceforward, working with undiminished energy, she executed hundreds of initials and vignettes as well as socials, devoting herself in chief part to hunting and flirting subjects. She was a facile designer, but her manner was chronically weak. It was John Leech who set her on the track; Mark Lemon, to whom she took her drawings, encouraged her, and with help from Mr. Swain she progressed. (FH)Condition: In a quarter-roan binding with paper-covered boards. Externally, sound, though with wear to the extremities and marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and quite clean, with just some scattered handling marks. Overall: GOOD..

        Waltoniana

London: Pickering and Co.,, 1878. Inedited Remains in Verse and Prose of Izaak Walton. Author of the Complete Angler. With Notes and a Preface … Octavo. Near contemporary panelled calf, gilt, by Bedford, red morocco label, all edges gilt, inner gilt dentelles edged with a dog-tooth roll, marbled endpapers. Engraved head- and tail-pieces throughout. A little rubbed, joints just starting, but overall very good. First edition of this "an agreeable confection of biographical and bibliographical gossip" compiled by the somewhat eccentric Shepherd; "a heavy drinker who lived for many years at the Bald-faced Stag, an inn in Putney. A vivid impression of him is given by W. Partington, who described him as: a tall angular man, often shabbily dressed, with shoulders rounded from long nights of poring over books. He was remarkable for the possession of a most beautiful voice and gentle manners. One of his idiosyncrasies was his persistence in walking always in the middle of the street—in defiance of the shouting and gesticulating jehus of London's cabs" (ODNB) "Few men who have written books have been able to win so large a share of the personal affection of their readers as honest Izaak Walton has done, and few books are laid down with so genuine a feeling of regret as the Complete Angler …the reader regrets Walton should have left so little behind him … but now we are able to present those who love his memory with a collection of fugitive pieces in verse and prose …" (Preface). Crested "signature" bookplate of John Ecroyd to the front pastedown.

Marbling to fore-edges of text-block. A lovely copy. VG. condition. Practical information on aspects of gardening and garden design. For example, this volume provides information on newly introduced Pictoee Carnations and the transplanting of valuable trees and shrubs. Interestingly, contains an article on the Herefordshire Pomona and how the Woolhope Club did not want to make any profit from it, hence the small print run. A previous owner has written what apple varieties are found in the volumes for 1872 to 1878 inclusive (we have all these volumes in stock). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Règlement de Navigation dans le Canal Maritime de Suez. Regulations for the Navigation of the Suez Maritime Canal

Port Saïd: Suez Maritime Canal Universal Company. Working Department,, 1878. Quarto (305 × 233 mm). 16-pages, bi-lingual text in double column, sewn as issued. A couple of minor inked corrections to the text in a contemporary hand. 3 pages of signal flags, some hand-coloured. Somewhat browned and becoming fragile, beginning to separate at the spine, and with some edge-splits, but fundamentally sound. First thus, regulations first published on the opening of the canal in 1869. Decidedly uncommon, OCLC locates just two copies of the first edition, and one each for 1880, 1899, and 1907, all of them published in Paris, rather than Port Saïd as is the case with the present, otherwise untraced, issue. The Bibliothèque Nationale, perhaps slightly oddly, holding just that for 1899. This version includes an "Extract from the Final Report … of the International Tonnage Committee" held in Constantinople in 1873 which provided the basis for future charges levied on ships passing through the canal. Highly interesting, unusual and uncommon.

Waltoniana. Inedited Remains in Verse and Prose of Izaak Walton. Author of the Complete Angler. With Notes and a Preface

London: Pickering and Co., 1878 - Octavo. Near contemporary panelled calf, gilt, by Bedford, red morocco label, all edges gilt, inner gilt dentelles edged with a dog-tooth roll, marbled endpapers. A little rubbed, joints just starting, but overall very good. Engraved head- and tail-pieces throughout.
