BLACK BEAUTY. His Grooms and Companions. The Autobiography of a Horse. Translated from the Original Equine.

First edition, first printing. Inscribed presentation copy from the author to her cousin Emma. Publisher's original brown cloth with decoration to the upper board and spine embossed in gilt and black. Carter's variant B binding. Engraved frontispiece after C. Hewitt. An exceptional example, the cloth clean with a little rubbing at the extremities and a small area of scuffing to the top left corner of the upper panel. The binding square, the original endpapers and hinges remain firm. Previous owner's circular blindstamp to the coated front endpaper and some spotting to the front blank, otherwise clean and bright throughout. Inscribed by Anna Sewell in black ink on the front blank "For Dearest Cousin Emma / with the Author's fond love / Christmas 1877". With two autograph letters signed from the author to "Dearest Cousin Emma". The first dated 26th Dec [1877] "I sent you a book on the 22nd which I hope arrived safely & brought my love with it.", the other dated 4th January [1878] and retaining the original mailing envelope "It is impossible for me to tell you all the pleasure that your letter gave me, but as you were an author before any of us, you may perhaps imagine it - I am delighted [underlined] that you like my book". Also present is a note from Grace Sewell annotated by Emma, sent on Anna's death "Dear Anna particularly requested her affectionate love to be sent to you". Housed in a purpose-made quarter red morocco case, with titles in gilt to the spine. An exceptional example in all respects. The recipient Emma Curtis, was herself an author of at least two books including "Annie Barclay" and "Jottings Of An Old Woman Of Eighty". Anna Sewell began writing Black Beauty in November 1871 whilst confined indoors, crippled with the illness that would eventually claim her life just a few months after the novel was published. As a result author inscribed copies are of the utmost scarcity.

Slave Trade. No. 2 (1877). Correspondence with British representatives and agents abroad, and reports from Naval Officers, relating to the Slave Trade. Presented to both Houses of Parliament by command of Her Majesty. 1877. [C.-1829.]. London, Harrison and Sons, 1877.

1877. Folio. XIII, (1) pp. 1 blank f., 382 pp. With 3 folding lithogr. maps of Mozambique, coast from Xanga to Ibo, and the Kingani River in East Africa. Sewn, with traces of spine. Rare British parliamentary papers and correspondence with local agents and officers on the slave trade. Two of these had been mutilated, and they all came originally from the Zanzibar dominions, but they had remained long enough in Arabia to acquire a knowledge of the Arabic language [...] I make no doubt that vast numbers continue to be imported through the Persian Gulf by the Muscat Arabs; but the fact that Zanzibar slaves are to be found in the slave markets of Mekka, proved that the five or six Jeddah dhows that annually frequent the port of Zanzibar are not sufficiently watched [...]" (p. 35). More relevant material is to be found in the sections "Egypt" (pp. 7-12; includes correspondence relating to the traffic at Jeddah and in the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea); "Persia" (pp. 34f.; "Abolition of Persian Slave Trade Commissioner at Bushire"; "On Slave Trade and status of slaves"; "Commissioner in Gulf need no longer be maintained"); "Turkey.         Autograph manuscript written in ink, with two pencil sketches, signed with his butterfly monogram. N. p., [probably early 1877].

1877. 8vo. 3 pp. on bifolium. To "my dear Black": "Noch nicht! noch nicht! my dear Black! I am a little behind hand - curious aint it! That confounded Peacock Room has nearly ruined me and I have had to work frightfully to make up for it. It will be all right directly of course but I am woefully pushed. - Beseech HRH to be indulgent and appoint some day next week - say Saturday or Friday afternoon at about 5 'o'clock and I will try to be ready for her and shall be so enchanted to see her interest in what I have been doing - I think you will like the pictures - manage this my dear Black for your [xxx] [Whistler's butterfly monogram]. Just write a line to say it is all right". - The letter discusses a proposed visit from Princess Louise, the daughter of Queen Victoria and wife of the Marquis of Lorne. The Princess was herself an artist - a sculptor of note - and Whistler's correspondence indicates she took a keen interest in his work. The two pencil sketches appear to have been drawn before the letter was written. If they are by Whistler, we can assume that they have something to do with a commission he was working on for Princess Louise. The drawings seem to be preliminary sketches for a crest, which features a dog and crossed swords. - The stupendously opulent and beautiful Peacock Room was painted by James A. McNeill Whistler during late 1876 and early 1877. The entire room is decorated in oil colour and gold on wood, leather and canvas, its Orientalist theme crowned by Whistler's painting The Princess from the Land of Porcelain. The Peacock Room is now installed in the Freer Gallery of Art (Smithsonian Institution) in Washington D.C., but was originally designed for use as the dining room in the London residence of Frederick R. Leyland, a wealthy English shipping magnate. In 1904, after the house had changed hands, the American Charles L. Freer, founder of the Freer Gallery of Art, was able to purchase the contents of the room, have it dismantled and shipped to his home in Detroit, where it was installed in an addition to his home in 1905. In 1919 it was once more dismantled and transported to its permanent location in the Freer Gallery in Washington, D.C. - Slightly stained.

THE CHILD OF THE CAVERN; or, Strange Doings Underground

1877 - Translated by W.H.G. Kingston. Numerous Illustrations. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1877. Original brown cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt, all edges gilt. First British Edition of the tale that was also published as THE BLACK INDIES and as UNDERGROUND CITY. The unusual tale takes place deep in a Scottish mine.~The peculiar wildness of Jules Verne's imagination shows with startling effect when he selects Scotland and its sober-minded people as scene and characters for his latest characteristic extravaganza. He describes a mine of fabulous wonders by and of superhuman powers, and then he has a plot that would furnish plots for several exciting novels. [from an early promotional piece cited in T&M]~The pirate publisher George Munro was the first to get out an edition in English, in his triple-columned self-wrappered "Seaside Library" in the Spring of 1877. This first British edition came out in October of that year: "Pictured on the front cover is Jack Ryan kneeling on the twenty-sixth landing down the gloomy shaft. Harfang the bird [owl] is also shown on the front cover and spine" [T&M]. This is a near-fine, bright copy (a few leaves standing slightly proud, faint fading on the blank rear cover).         The Kaisarnamah i Hind; or, Lay of the Empress. A Poem, in nine Cantos with Appendices containing the Histories of the Princes of India, dedicated with gracious Permission to Her Majesty the Queen Empress of India. London, printed for private circulation only (by Maclure & Macdonald), 1877-1882.

1877. 2 vols. Large folio (495 x 370 mm). (44) ff. of English text, (58) ff. of Persian text, 117, (1) pp. (48) ff. of English text, (26) ff. of Hindi text, (2), 45, (1) pp. With 2 lithogr. title pages, 2 lithogr. frontispiece portraits of Queen Victoria (double-tinted lithograph) and Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (chromolithograph), and 24 photographic portraits (woodburytypes), 17 chromolithogr. coats of arms, 51 photographic views (woodburytypes), 1 lithogr. view, 2 maps and 4 genealogical tables (3 double-page). With the portraits and the text of the cantos in elaborate and finely illuminated chromolithogr. borders (with gold); the other text leaves within red borders. With the extensive Persian and Hindi texts lithographed from calligraphic models. Contemp. green morocco, each board with large gold-tooled centre-piece representing the star of India, with in the centre the monogram "VRI" ("Victoria Regina Imperatrix"), gold-tooled fillets, gold-tooled spine with title and author in second and third of six compartments, gilt edges (signed at the foot of the front turn-in by Morley, Oxford). A sumptuous and extremely rare tribute to the British Raj and a detailed history of the princely families in India by the distinguished orientalist Edward Backhouse Eastwick (1814-83), prompted by the proclamation of Queen Victoria as Empress of India in 1876. The first volume contains three cantos, with a translation into Persian verse by Amir Jan, followed by a history of the Nizáms of the Dakan; the second volume contains cantos IV and V with a translation into Hindi verse by Kaviraja Syamala Dasa of Udaipur, followed by a history of the Rájpúts. - The work is beautifully decorated, and illustrated with fine photographic views of palaces, tombs, gates, etc., including the mausoleum of the Emperor Humayún, the tomb of Nizámu'd-dín, the caves of Ajanta, the Palace of Nizám, the Hall of the 66 pillars and the Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India. It further includes photographic portraits and finely chromolithographed coats-of-arms of several members of the English and Indian aristocracy. - The "List of subscribers to the Kaisarnámah i hind and distribution of copies", included in the first volume, lists only 107 copies, which explains its rarity. - Edward Backhouse Eastwick spent some six years in India, serving first as cadet in the infantry and later as interpreter, and another three in Persia. He published a number of well-received translations of Persian literary classics and wrote several books on the cities of India. - Some smudges and spotting, frontispiece portraits pulled loose from the title page, but still attached to the endleaves. The bindings show some wear, the first volume with some stains and scratches and one headband nearly detached. Overall in very good condition. Blumhardt, A supplementary catalogue of Hindi books in the library of the British Museum, col. 80.         TURKISTAN Notes From a Journey in Russian Turkistan, Khokand, Bukhara and Kuldja

New York: Scribner, Amstrong & Co., 1877. 2 volumes. First Edition, 1877 issue. With 2 frontispieces, 37 other wood-cut illustrations both on full page plates and within the text and with three folding colour maps. Complete. 8vo, publisher’s original dark-green cloth ruled and decorated on the upper covers and spines in gilt and black, t.e.g. xii, 411; [x], 463 pp. A fine set indeed, very fresh, clean, crisp and beautifully preserved. As pristine and unused. Only the very faintest evidence of age. RARE IN THIS CONDITION, AN IMPORTANT, EVEN PRIMARY WORK ON CENTRAL ASIA. Schuyler, an American career diplomat, went to Turkistan in 1873 while serving as consul-general in St. Petersburg. Although the aim of his journey was to report on the political and social conditions to of the regions recently annexed by Russio, the result was no mere government study. Schuyler has produced an exceptionally detailed account of Central Asia, the Steppe, Syr Darya, Tashkent, Mussulman life, bazaars, trade, Samarkand, Zarafshan valley, Hodjent, Kurama, Khokand, Bukhara, Issyk Kul, Semiretch, Kuldja and the Russian foreign policy in Asia, their administration, Khivan campaign and its consequences. It also provides an exceptional comparison of the inhabitants living under the control of the Khans and those under Russian rule. Called “Monumental...a classic on the subject" by Yakushi.

Album containing 37 photographs (including 1 repeat) of the Historical exhibition of Friesland held in the royal palace of Leeuwarden in the summer of 1877, giving a valuable display of the exhibition and its historical artefacts. The photos were apparently also sold together in a limited issue album as we could locate two other copies: one in the library of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam and one in the collection of Tresoar, Leeuwarden. One of the three loosely inserted leaves with photographs, contains a manuscript owner's inscription of another Leeuwarden-based photographer, Hendrik Anthonie Karel Ringler (1846-1879).Some minor thumbing on the title-page and some occasional foxing throughout, not affecting the photographs, otherwise in very good condition. Je serais de retour surement à New York vers le 1 mai. Envoie moi un télégramme afin que je le reçoive avant de m’embarquer en bateau car je ne sais si je recevrai seulement une de tes lettres. H. Harrison Oct. 5th 1877.First edition, a presentation copy, of this eccentric collection of verse and prose by the photographer, spiritualist and journalist William Henry Harrison. Harrison was a regular contributor to the British Journal of Photography, and several pieces here evidence his passion. For photography. 'The Lay of the Photographer' is a mock heroic describing the preparation of photographic plates, with the important chemicals personified as the elegant Bromide, the adventurous young Pyroxyline etc. Harrison claimed to have invented a bromide emulsion dry plate, and the poem touts the superiority of his process: if you mention the outmoded iodine method to a photographer, he is liable to 'shriek and turn pallid with fear'. A second piece in an orientalist mdoe, 'How Hadji Al Shacabac was Photographed', describes his visit to a mysterious wizard skilled in the art of instantly producing pictures of people with the aid of a small 'cannon'. The other pieces include verse in praise of a 'Broad-Brimmed Hat', as well as the imagined lamentations of a 'Fat Man' and a 'Mother-in-Law'. The prose story 'Our Raven' describes the author's trials as the hands (or claws) of a demonically possessed Raven with a passion for gardening. Other more serious essays include 'How to double the Utility of the Printing Press' and 'Materialistic Religion'.The elaborate cover design by by Florence Claxton depicts a griffin, accompanied by a rather disgruntled pelican-like bird holding a pen in its beak. A prefatory note explains that the choice of a griffin emblem for the front of the book is a reference to the monster that protected its treasure from 'the one eyes Arimaspians': this griffin, apparently, guards the book from opportunistic American publishers; the pelican, perhaps, represents the author.William Henry Harrison was notable for his close involvement in the nineteenth-century craze for spiritualism. He was the founder of the Spiritualist Newspaper, and later of the British National Association of Spiritualists. Marie Sinclair, the 'authoress of "Serious Letters to serious Friends", to whom this book is inscribed was vice-president of the Association. Her Letters on a serious Subject to serious Friends (1875) was an ambitious attempt to reconcile theosophy, spiritualism, and Catholicism Language: English

MICHAEL STROGOFF, The Courier of the Czar

1877. Verne, Jules. MICHAEL STROGOFF. Translated by W.H.G. Kingston. Revised by Julius Chambers. With Ninety Full-Page Illustrations. New York: Scribner, Armstrong & Company, 1877. 6 pp undated ads. Original green cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt, beveled. First American Edition of this historical tale of adventure taking place during a Siberian revolt by the Tartars. The czar must get a message to his brother the arch-duke, in Irkutsk, for which he chooses his best courier, Michael Strogoff.~The first publication in English, in October 1876, was in a wrappered American edition by Frank Leslie; Sampson Low's U.K. edition came out two months later (in December 1876, despite the 1877 date on the title page). This Scribner Armstrong edition came out a few weeks later, in January 1877; it sold so well that by February a third edition was being advertised.~This is a near-fine copy, with minor rubbing at the extremities but otherwise scarcely any external wear or soil (a few leaves stand slightly proud). This highly-sought Verne tale seldom turns up in any better condition. Taves & Michaluk V015; Edwards 15.

1877 Original Wisden Rebound with Covers

This 1877 Wisden was rebound a little time ago in brown boards with a green leather spine and corners. The original wrappers have been preserved and are in excellent, unrestored, clean condition. There are are one or two small marks to the front and rear boards. The spine has the title and year in gilt and an old owner's initials at the base of the spine. Internally, the book is in fabulous condition. The wrappers are complete, unrestored with just the odd tiny mark. The remaining contents are complete, original, unmarked and in fine condition. I suspect that the book was rebound quite some time ago and as a result the original contents and wrappers have been brilliantly preserved. A really nice example.

        Virgin Soil].

Gerhard Leipzig 1877 - Octavo (18.5 x 12 cm), two parts in one book. 283, 244 pp. Contemporary half-sheep over marble boards, spine with raised bands, gilt ruled. Fine copy of the rare first edition in book form of Turgenev's last and longest novel. It was this work, the last of Turgenev's novel, Virgin Soil, that established the writer as a global political and literary authority. In it, the psychological depth combined with the vivid descriptions of the desolate Russian countryside and its rural villages lend the novel a photographic quality not present in his earlier work - a harshness and rythm which is the sign of Turgenev's ultimate artistic maturity. Virgin Soil offers a complex and careful examination of the political unrest of Turgenev's times. If in Fathers and Sons Turgenev tactfully examined the nature of nihilist theories in the young generation, in Virgin Soil the writer confronts the full force of populism, a radicalised and highly politicized offspring of nihilism. No other copies of this edition were traced in the auctions since 1994. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

(Delpeuch, 1928).

Arctic Expedition, 1875-6. Journals and proceedings of the Arctic Expedition, 1875-6, under the command of Captain Sir George S. Nares, R.N., K.C.B. . Presented to both Houses of Parliament by command of Her Majesty, 1877.

London H. M. S. O 1877 - First edition. Folio, viii, 484pp., 16 folding maps, 16 plates, illustrations in the text, contemporary blue half roan, marbled boards, lightly faded, neat restoration to extremities, an excellent copy. One of the most valuable sources for the history of exploration in northern Canada. The Nares expedition, so called after its commander George Nares (1831-1915), sailed in two ships, HMS Alert and HMS Discovery, in late May of 1875, in quest of the North Pole. The ships reached Lady Franklin Bay on North Ellesmere Island and the Alert went on to reach the extreme north of the island, the highest latitude that had yet been reached by a ship. In April 1876, three separate sledge parties set out but the men showed serious signs of scurvy and several members died. Nares was forced to abandon the expedition and returned to England in September that year. Despite the difficulties faced by the expedition, it did produce important scientific results including a study of Inuit dog disease and a volume of physical observations. The Nares expedition is one of the best documented Arctic expeditions, with eight Parliamentary Blue Books alone devoted to it between 1875 and 1878. Arctic explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson wrote "[The Arctic Blue Books] are beyond comparison the most important tool of knowledge in this field ." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
