An den Frühling. Radierungen von Heinr. Vogeler Worpswede.

Bildthemen sind u. a. Sarkowski 1841. Neteler II, 22. Langer S. 130. Rief 24-33. Roeper 1, 15-17, 22, 24, 29, 34, 37 und 47. Erste Ausgabe. [Attributes: First Edition]

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, or What Alice Found There (Sequel to Alice's Adventures In Wonderland

London: Macmillan, 1877. Carroll, Lewis [Charles Lutwidge Dodgson]. THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, or what Alice Found There. London: Macmillan, 1877. Early Edition, published five years after the first edition. PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO THIS NEPHEW, inscribed on the half-title: "Bertram James Collingwood/ from his affte. Uncle/ the Author/ August. 7. 1878." Original cloth, all edges gilt. GOOD only, having endured old and inexpert attempts at repair to the spine and inner hinges. There is some dark smudging to the last eight pages but the covers are relatively clean. While not glistening with eye appeal, this is an important copy having been presented to one of the author's two beloved nephews (the other became his biographer). Bertram James Collingwood [1871- 1934] shared his uncle's love for mathematics and logic (illuminating letters between the two which discuss these subjects can be found in various institutions). When Dodgson made his funeral arrangements, he arranged for Bertram to receive (in 1898) that portion of his library related to Mathematics, Science, and Medicine. Like his uncle, Collingwood became a professor and had a brilliant career at University (Cambridge) but, unlike his uncle, he was a fanatical sportsman and is best known today for having donated the "Collingwood Cup" which is still the championship trophy for Irish University Football, celebrating its 100th birthday in 2014. While we have seen numerous copies of the author's inscribed books, those actually presented to members of his family are highly uncommon, especially in original cloth. In a splendid new quarter-morocco slipcase.. Inscribed By Author. Decorative Cloth. Good. Illus. by John Tenniel.

Uber der Ursprung der hinteren Nervenwurzeln im Ruckenmark von Ammocoetes (Petromyzon Planeri). Offprint from Sitzungsberichte der Mathematisch- Naturwissenschaftlichen Classe der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften LXXV, III Abtheilung. January-May 1877.

[Vienna: Karl Gerold's Sohn, 1877]. First edition, extremely rare separately-paginated offprint (journal pagination 15-27), of Freud's first published paper. In 1876, three years after entering the University of Vienna as a medical student, Freud joined the laboratory of the eminent physiologist Ernst Brücke where he began studying the histology of nerve tissue, a subject that would occupy him for the next ten years. During this time Freud made several significant contributions to our knowledge of the structure of nerve cells and took some first steps toward the theory of the neuron. Freud's first assignment at Brücke's laboratory was to clarify the structure of the so-called Reissner cells, a large type of nerve cell found in the spinal cord of the lamprey (Petromyzon), a primitive species of fish. "Within a few weeks, Freud reported to Brücke that he could not only trace peripheral sensory nerves to their origins from Reissner's cells, but he could also see fibers in the dorsal (sensory) roots that arose from these same cells and passed centrally into the spinal cord. This led to his first scientific papers, in which he concluded that Reissner's cells 'are nothing else than spinal ganglion cells which, in those low vertebrates, where the migration of the embryonic neural tube to the periphery is not yet completed, remain within the spinal cord'" (Shepherd, Foundations of the Neuron Doctrine: 25th Anniversary Edition, pp. 66-67). The offered paper is Freud's first paper on Petromyzon. It "appeared in print three months before the publication of his first original piece of student research, on the gonadic structure of the male eel" (Norman). No copies of this offprint listed on ABPC/RBH (there was a copy of this offprint in the Haskell F. Norman library, but it did not appear in the 1998 Christie's sale of the library). OCLC lists five copies in US. "When Freud undertook this research project, the spinal chord of the lower vertebrates was known to be characterized by the arrangement of bipolar ganglion cells. Higher vertebrates were believed to possess exclusively unipolar ganglia. Freud was able to show that the spinal chord of Petromyzon possesses both types of cells - itself an important contribution to evolutionary theory. As for the Reissner cells (located in the posterior nerve root), Freud discovered that they too were a form of spinal ganglion cell but had remained within the spinal chord. Finally, he observed certain Reissner-like cellular elements on the surface of the spinal chord, between the posterior nerve root and the peripheral ganglia. Deducing that these cells were the evolutionary link between the central and the peripheral ganglia, he proclaimed that "it is not surprising if, in an animal that in many respects represents a permanent embryo, there are cells that have remained behind and that indicate the path the spinal ganglion cells once travelled." To use Freud's later psychoanalytic terminology, such laggard cells were "fixated" in the midst of their evolutionary course. "Years later Freud found this evolutionary-anatomical parallel to his psychoanalytic findings of important didactic use in his Introductory Lectures on Psycho-Analysis. After describing his youthful discoveries about Petromyzon, with its laggard ganglion cells, Freud went on to say: "I will therefore declare without more ado that I regard it as possible in the case of every particular sexual trend that some portions of it have stayed behind at earlier stages of its development, even though other portions may have reached their final goal ... Let me further make it clear that we propose to describe the lagging behind of a part trend at an earlier stage as a fixation - a fixation, that is, of the instinct" (Standard Edition XVI, 340)" (Sulloway, Freud, Biologist of the Mind: Beyond the Psychoanalytic Legend, pp. 267-8). Freud worked at Brücke's institute, apart from a year's military service, from 1876 until 1882 (neurological research delayed his final medical examination until March 1881), when Brücke advised him to abandon the laboratory for financial reasons. Following his engagement in June 1882 to Martha Bernays, the grand-daughter of a chief Rabbi in Hamburg, he felt compelled to set up his own medical practice to enable him to support a family, so he registered in July as an aspirant at the Allgemeine Krankenhaus in Vienna in order to gain the necessary practical experience. Over a three-year period, Freud worked in various departments of the hospital. His research work in cerebral anatomy led to the publication of a seminal paper on the palliative effects of cocaine in 1884. His time spent in Theodor Meynert's psychiatric clinic and as a locum in a local asylum led to an increased interest in clinical work. His substantial body of published research led to his appointment as a docent in neuropathology in 1885, a non-salaried post but one which entitled him to give lectures at the University of Vienna. In 1886, Freud resigned his hospital post and entered private practice specializing in "nervous disorders". Grinstein 37; Jones I, pp. 51-2; Standard edition 1877a; Norman F1. 8vo (245 x 157 mm), pp. 13 with one folding plate. Original printed wrappers, unopened (stamp of Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften on upper wrapper). Extremities slightly worn.

Cloth of Supplement volume damp marked, some occasional light soiling but overall text very good. Volumes I and II 23.8 x 15.5cm (25.4 x 17 binding) measure whereas the Supplement is a little larger at 24.5 x 15.7cm, (25 x 16.5cm binding). Ernst Johann Eitel (Ernest John Eitel, 1837-1908) was a German protestant missionary to China in the Canton area who later joined the Hong Kong civil government, where his knowledge of the languages and people of the province were of great assistance to the British authorities. He was also a prolific writer, whose works on Buddhism and on fengshui are being reprinted to this day on account of their abiding value. The Cantonese-English Dictionary is not least among his achievements.Several Cantonese-English dictionaries predate Eitel's, the most significant being the 1856 one volume work by the eminent American missionary scholar, S. Wells Williams (1812-1884) best known for his major historical work, The Middle Kingdom, published in 1848 and in a revised edition of 1883. Wilhelm Lobscheid (1822-1890), another German missionary-scholar turned Hong Kong civil servant, published an English and Chinese Dictionary in Hong Kong in four parts between 1866-69 (Daily Press Office) which gave the Punti (Cantonese) and Mandarin pronounciations , and was afterwards (1883) enlarged and re- published as a single volume in Japan by a Japanese scholar, However, Eitel's was the first properly Cantonese-English dictionary to appear in two regular volumes. It was later revised and enlarged further by Immanuel Gottlieb Genahr (1856-1937) yet another German missionary-scholar working in the Canton province [Guangdong] and published in 1910. This is the edition more commonly available today. The first edition is seldom if ever seen, which makes the present copy of greater interest to the specialist bibliophile. The supplement is even scarer still than the rare first edition.Strictly speaking, Cantonese is a language, not a dialect. The Eitel dictionary adopted the speech of the provincial capital, Canton, as the standard version of the spoken language, but there were, and to some extent still must be, many variations to be found within the regions of the province, including major dialects which were the subject of published articles by James Dyer Ball and other resident sinologues of the day, to be found in late 19th century issues of the China Review. In this situation, it is scarcely surprising that it is open to criticism by modern linguistic scholars like the late Wong Shik-ling (S.L. Wong) 1908-1959, of Lingnan and Hong Kong Universities, whose authoritative study of the language was published in Chinese in 1948. His observations would apply to all earlier works, but this is to be expected and in no way detracts from Eitel's and others' achievements in bringing forward their important contributions to those westerners studying the language and to the promotion and understanding essential to meaningful cultural exchange. This copy of the first edition of Eitel's Dictionary was bought in Hong Kong about 1970 or earlier, and is likely to have spent its whole life there, perhaps having been brought out for sale by the London publisher's co-publisher, the famous local firm of Lane, Crawford & Co, founded in 1850 which continues to this day as the territory's most prestigious local department store, with branches in China. The dictionary itself was re-bound in the early 20th century, and the worn title blocks were replaced very recently. It appears likely that the cloth the supplementary volume is bound in is the original. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 143958)....

Artist's Sketchbook of Pacific drawings, made during his exile to New Caledonia in 1874-1877.

at sea and in New Caledonia: 1874-1877. Oblong portfolio of beige (sail?) cloth, 160 x 235 mm., pencil illustrations throughout, some on grey paper (see catalogue note), pen and ink drawing on card tipped-on to front paste-down as impromptu book-plate; the pictures generally in very good condition, the binding with evidence of strong use. Interesting and lively portfolio of original drawings made during exile in New Caledonia, by a renowned French artist and winner of the Prix de Rome. Several of the finer drawings depict life on board the Virginie, the ship on which he was deported, and there are besides several very good sketches of New Caledonian scenes; without doubt the most interesting showing a boisterous tribal dance. Charles Capellaro (1826-1899) was a well-regarded French sculptor who regularly exhibited at the Salon during the 1860s. A prominent member of the 1871 Paris Commune, Capellaro was lucky to escape the death penalty in the Commune's bloody aftermath, and on 13 May 1872 was condemned to be deported to the Île des Pins in New Caledonia. Intriguingly, however, in 1870 he had been awarded the commission for a statue for the façade of Saint Eustache church, and he continued to work on the commission even after his imprisonment. Indeed, his deportation in 1874 seems to have been actively delayed while he continued to work, and that year he even managed to have another statue exhibited in the Salon. He was, Sánchez has written, a peculiar anomaly, 'an artist producing state-sponsored work from prison' (Gonzalo J. Sánchez, Organizing Independence: the artists federation of the Paris Commune, p. 128). However, his sentence finally caught up with him, and Capellaro arrived on the Île des Pins in late 1874, already agitating for his freedom. Fellow artists in Paris did not forget him, and due to their efforts in 1877 his sentence was commuted to ten-years banishment. He returned to Brussels, finagled a three-month visa for Paris, and returned home.During his three years in New Caledonia, Capellaro was unable to sculpt on a grand scale, although he did continue to draw (several of his drawings are now in the Musée du Quay Branly) and he did sculpt with the cruder materials available, including executing a clay head of Samuel, King of the Isle of Pines (now in the State Library of New South Wales).A card (75 x 115 mm.) mounted on the inside cover introduces the album, with a caption which reads 'à bord de la Virginie, le 12 octobre 1874', and a small cartouche dedicating the work to his wife, children, and friends, signed C. Capellaro. Otherwise the portfolio contains six detailed drawings of life on board ship, including one of four matelots clustered around the wheel with, at right, an artist sketching - perhaps meant to be Capellaro himself. Another dramatic image shows the three-masted vessel pitching in a fierce storm. There are also seven drawings dealing with Polynesia, made in black and white pencil (the whites in so-called "mine de plomb"). This series includes several views of ports taken from on board including one three-page panorama (sadly not captioned, but perhaps detailed enough to make identification possible), as well as scenes of a Melanesian dance evidently witnessed by Capellaro, and an idealised portrait of a topless woman under a palm.Lastly, there are also some 20 sheets of drawings on different subjects, and it seems likely that Capellaro drew these pictures after he had returned home. The drawings show portraits of European people, classical images, studies of sculptures and a chasseur d'Afrique. One, a study of a monumental sculpture on tissue-paper, is signed "C. Capellaro" Some stains and a few small tears.

Andersen's Library. [Cover title]: Stories from Hans Andersen. (Six volumes)

New York: James Miller. 1877. Six volumes. 12mo. Illustrated. Brownish-purple decorated cloth stamped in gilt and black. Each volume with the small uniform bookseller's stamp on the front pastedown, boards a trifle rubbed, a lovely and uniform about fine set. Each volume with a separate title page usually featuring the most famous story in that volume. While by no means the first American printings of most of the stories, likely one of the first multi-volume sets to contain a large selection: 91 of his most beloved fables and tales. Andersen had died in 1875. We could find no library that held all six volumes. A handsome little set. .

Grinnell, Ia, 1877. [17] leaves of sketches, with two additional drawings laid in, plus blanks. Oblong octavo. Half morocco and purple cloth, front board gilt stamped. Spine chipped, morocco rubbed, cloth very lightly stained. Contemporary ownership inscriptions on first leaf recto. Leaves lightly tanned, otherwise internally clean. About very good. A sketchbook that belonged to noted journalist Albert Shaw as a young man at Iowa College (now Grinnell College) in 1877. Shaw held a number of positions throughout his long career, but is most known for his editorship of the REVIEW OF REVIEWS, a monthly digest of scholarly articles and periodicals that published for over forty-five years, from 1891 to 1937. "As editor and publisher of the REVIEW OF REVIEWS, Albert Shaw was a major figure in American periodical journalism for nearly half a century" - ANB. This volume contains almost twenty of Shaw's sketches from the summer of 1877. They consist predominately of nature scenes, still lifes, and architectural drawings made in the vicinity of Spirit Lake in northern Iowa. There are also several scenes of camping and fishing. An interesting souvenir of Shaw's college life, before he went on to be an important figure in turn of the century publishing.

Herrn Eugen Dühring?s Umwälzung der Wissenschaft.

Leipzig, Genossenschafts-Buchdruckerei, (1877) - 1878.. 2 Tle. in 1 Band. Titel, VIII, 274 S. Lwd. d. Zt. 19 x 13 cm. Stammhammer I, 72, 4; Rubel 76. Hinzufügung "I. Philosophie" über die gedruckte Angabe "II. Politische Ökonomie. Sozialismus". - Geringfügig berieben, recht gutes Exemplar!
