Adventures of Huckleberry Finn [Manuscript copy]

N.p.. Soft Cover. [Chapters 1-21, Hartford & Elmira, 1876-1880]. New York, 1992. A direct copy made from the original autograph manuscript, by Sotheby's, in case the manuscript should be lost again. Quarto, 666 leaves (xerograph on laid paper, watermarked "Strathmore Alexandra Brilliant 100% cotton fiber USA" on the Sotheby's letterhead). Three volumes, clasp bound. The final half of the Huckleberry Finn MS was owned by the Buffalo Public Library. The consensus was that the first half was lost forever. But on Labor Day, 1990, the first half of the MS of the great American novel was found in an attic in Southern California. It was sent to Sotheby's for sale (the hammer price would have been in the millions). The curator of the Buffalo Public Library, William H. Loos, showed proof that Twain had gifted the entire MS to that library. An agreement was reached and the Buffalo Public Library, at last, owned the complete MS of Huckleberry Finn. Sotheby's was allowed to make two copies of the lost MS. One copy will be Held by Sotheby's. The present copy is the only copy of this important manuscript in private hands. This rare hard copy of Twain's MS, includes many corrections, by the author, which are yet unpublished. For example, page 29 shows some unsavory words which were eliminated from the novel. Also, a previously unknown episode, regarding some ghosts and a dead man, was expurgated before publication. But that story was published in the June 26/July 3, 1995 issue of The New Yorker magazine. [Together with]: A typed letter signed, from Jay Dillon (formerly of Sotheby's) and attesting that this is the only available copy of the above manuscript. Provenance: Jay Dillard, 1992-2002; Robert Slotta of Hilliard, Ohio, 2002-2009; Charles Parkhurst Rare Books, Inc., 2009-.

POETICAL WORKS OF PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY. Edited by H. Buxton Forman

London: Reeves and Turner, 1876. 4 volumes. The first of the Buxton Forman editions. Illustrated with frontispieces, one additional plate, and 5 facsimiles. 8vo, publisher's original sky-blue cloth with gilt pictorial designs by Dante Gabriel Rossetti on the covers, gilt lettering and gilt paneling to the spines. x l, 413, [1]; viii, 438; xx, 476, [1]; xix, 573 pp.. A very good, handsome and tight set, mild foxing to the prelims caused as usual by the pastedown offset, and very slight and uniform mellowing to the spines. A very well preserved set. THE FIRST OF THE HIGHLY IMPORTANT BUXTON FORMAN EDITIONS. This was the first version of Shelley that Buxtom Forman edited. Forman's goal was to lay before the public "as near an approximation as may be to the text that the poet intended to issue," a task which required Forman to decide on what authority to base the final version of any given poem. As he states in his preface, "In respect of books seen through the press by [Shelley], there ought to be no difficulty whatever, except as regards isloated words and stops; but unfortunately he did not revise while at press one half of the entire bulk of his poetry, several of the volumes having been printed in England while he was abroad, and read through the press by friends. As regards the proportion of his mature works, from 'Alastor' onwards, which had the advantage of his personal revision when in type, we should, I think, be making a liberal allowance if we assumed that he saw proofs of one third; and the largest of the volumes seen through the press by himself is infamously printed.

        The Hunting of the Snark.

London: Macmillan and Co.,, 1876. Octavo. Original buff boards, titles to spine black, illustrations to covers in black, green coated endpapers, all edges gilt. With the dust jacket. Housed in a custom brown morocco solander box. Frontispiece and 8 illustrations by Henry Holiday with tissue-guards. Spine rolled, covers foxed, a little spotting to contents; an excellent copy in the lightly foxed dust jacket, with some loss to spine ends, a couple of chips to extremities, short closed tears to spine panel and tape repairs to verso. First edition, with the scarce grey dust jacket. The printed dust jacket for The Hunting of the Snark is not the earliest recorded, but it has considerable interest as a particularly well-documented example. Dodgson's letter of 6 February 1876 to his publisher, Alexander Macmillan, indicates the thinking behind its use: he asks that the book's title be printed on the spine of the paper wrapper, so that the book "can stand in bookstalls without being taken out of paper, and so can be kept in cleaner and more saleable condition". Being conceived of as a temporary wrapper at point of sale, the paper used for the jacket is inexpensive and uncoated, liable to foxing and wear, and was almost invariably discarded. Rather than repeating the decorative blocking of the front cover, as some 19th-century publishers did, Macmillan printed on the front panel a letterpress title laid out in the style of a title page and, on the back, advertisements for other Lewis Carroll books.

Royal Asiatic Society Offprints. 400 Title Collection. 1876 to 1990

1876, Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. A collection of over 400 rare and uncommon Offprints from the prestigious Journal of The Royal Asiatic Society. A huge and wide ranging selection that would prove very expensive to buy individually and be very time consuming to assemble, if you even could easily do so. A full list of the titles in the collection is available on request. The condition will reflect the fragile and ephemeral format of the production; very good overall. PLEASE NOTE: These are not reprints or extracts, they are rare Offprints, not extracts or reprints. An offprint is produced by the publisher's of journals in very small quantities, with the usual intention of allowing the author to present them to friends or colleagues and for review. The printing is done simultaneously with the main journal, and then they are bound up in specially printed wrappers with the author's name and title printed. They are considered quite collectable and desirable due to their intimate connection to the author of the work, rather than the more mass produced nature of the full journal. The Royal Asiatic Society is dedicated to the serious study of the culture, history and languages of Asia. Founded in 1823 by the Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke, and has counted many distinguished and important explorers, writers and eminent individuals among its members, including Sir Richard Burton (1821-90), Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), and Sir Wilfred Thesiger. A full list of the titles in the collection is available on request. Size: Octavo (standard book size). Item Type: Journal. Quantity Available: 1.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

[AUTOGRAPH NOTE, SIGNED, FROM BEDFORD PIM TO FLORA BRABY, TRANSMITTING PHOTOGRAPHS TO HER FOR HER ALBUM]

[London], 1876. Typical mailing folds, else near fine. Bedford Clapperton Tervelyan Pim served in the Royal Navy, as a barrister, an author, and most importantly, as an Arctic explorer. He was the first man to successfully travel by ship from the eastern side of the Northwest Passage to the western side. He also led an expedition in search of Sir John Franklin in 1850, and served under Edward Belcher in the western division of his 1852 Arctic expedition. In this short autograph note, signed, Pim writes to a friend who had likely asked for photographs of him for her scrapbook or album. He complies, as such: "My dear young friend Flora Braby I have much pleasure in sending you three or four Photographs for your album and one of myself in wig and gown which I have no doubt will amuse you - with kind regards to Papa and Mama I am Yours Sincerely Bedford Pim."

Omaha: Printed at the Herald Steam Book and Job Printing House, 1876. Original printed green wrappers, expertly rebacked in matching green paper. Wrappers a bit wrinkled, a few small tears in edges. Faint circular ink stamp on front wrapper and titlepage. Very clean internally. Very good. In a cloth clamshell box, spine gilt. A fundamental and very scarce work on the region, based on the author's twelve years of residence in the Rocky Mountains and on the plains. He recounts details of the settlement of Cheyenne, events in its early history, the actions of the vigilantes, the pioneer press, early commercial endeavors, etc. The thirteen terminal pages of this work comprise a business directory, including ads for the Union Pacific Railroad, stage lines, land promoters, merchants, etc. "The work is the result of personal observation and experiences in the Dakota- Wyoming country extending over a period of some twelve years on the plains and in the Rocky Mountains. Triggs set out in June of 1863 from Davenport, Iowa, as Lieutenant of the Seventh Iowa Cavalry. He accompanied the command of General Mitchell on the Sioux-Cheyenne expedition of 1864, was then assigned to duty at Fort Halleck; joined the staff of General Curtis at Fort Laramie; fought in the Indian Campaigns of '65, retiring as Captain. From that year onward he devoted himself to prospecting and exploring in the Wyoming Territory" - Eberstadt (asking $200 for a copy in 1937). Triggs produced the first directory of Laramie City in 1875. The map, drawn by W.M. Masi, covers the present state of Wyoming. As a whole, this work comprises one of the earliest and most important histories of the Wyoming-Dakota region. "Exceedingly rare" - Adams, SIX-GUNS. "Of greatest importance"- MIDLAND NOTES.

The Holy Bible: Containing the Old and New Testaments; translated literally from the original tongues.

Hartford: American Publishing Co. 8vo (25.5 cm, 10"). [2], 892, 276 pp.. 1876 First and only edition of this interestingly nonconformist translation, done by a vocal suffragist known for protesting the taxation of unenfranchised women. Julia Evelina Smith (1792–1886), one of the five celebrated, talented siblings sometimes referred to as the "Marvelous Smith Sisters of Connecticut," became a member of the Sandemanian sect after much independent religious study. She chose to have her private labor of love published to serve as a public demonstration of the intellectual capabilities of women, rebuking one dubious banker with the comment that she "thought it just as well to spend money to print this Bible as to put it into a thousand-dollar shawl" (New York Times, 9 March 1886). Smith endeavored to provide an extremely literal, word-for-word rendition to enhance her and her sisters' understanding of the text. Regarding the rather tangled results, she notes in her preface that "readers of this book may think it strange that I have made such use of the tenses . . . It seems to me that the original Hebrew had no regard to time, and that the Bible speaks for all ages." Priding herself as a student of ancient languages particularly on her Hebrew, this translator closely followed the Masoretic text for the O.T. and => consistently used "Jehovah" for the Tetragrammaton. Publisher's pebbled brown cloth, title and translator's name simply gilt-stamped within blind-stamped panel; recently rebacked and original spine reapplied (spine slightly rumpled), one corner restored, other corners mildly rubbed. Hinges (inside) reinforced. Front pastedown with affixed newspaper clipping on the Smith sisters. One page with short tear from lower edge, not extending into text; pages clean. => A nice copy of a very desirable Bible.

Edinburgh - W.P. Nimmo, Hay and Mitchell 1876 - An attractive set of the Waverley Novels by Sir Walter Scott, in decorative half-morocco binding, and comprising the complete twenty six works included in this edition, in thirteen volumes. Titles are as follows:Waverley and Guy ManneringWoodstock and The Fair Maid of PerthAntiquary and Rob RoyPeveril of The Peak and Quentin DurwardCastle Dangerous and Highland WidowAbbot and KenilworthOld Mortality and Legend of MontroseBetrothed and TalismanSt Ronan's Well and RedgauntletIvanhoe and MonsteryAnne of Geierstein and Count Robert of ParisPirate and Fortunes of NigelSir Walter Scott was a Scottish historical novelist, playwright and poet. The first English language author to have a truly international career in his lifetime, Scott's works are still read today, and many of his works are considered classics of both English and Scottish literature. During his own era, and for nearly a century subsequently, the works were among the most popular and widely read in Europe. Although Scott had attained celebrity status through his poetry during his lifetime, he is most famously remembered for his novels which were originally published anonymously under the title of 'The Author of Waverley'. Here, twenty six of the works are presented alongside biographical and critical notices by the Reverend P. Hately Waddell, with additional glosseries of Scottish phrases and foreign words, as well as forntispiece plates and decorative title pages. Several volumes contain the book plate of one Robert G. Shephard Dalkin. Condition: In decorative half-calf binding with gilt detailing and paper-covered boards. Externally smart, there is wear to the extremities, joints and backstrip, with odd minor wear to boards. Internally, the pages are firmly bound and generally bright and clean aside from spotting to endpages and the odd spot throughout. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Royal Asiatic Society Offprints. 400 Title Collection. 1876 to 1990

1876, First Edition. Category: Royal Asiatic Society; Britain/UK; Inventory No: 196913.

        The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

Hartford, Conn: The American Publishing Company, 1876. First edition. Very Good. First printing, with the half-title and the frontis illustration on separate leaves, printed on wove paper. Collates complete as per BAL 3369 with the triple fly-leaves on laid paper, front and back, and four pages of publisher's ads following the novel. Only 5,000 copies of this first printing were issued (compared to 30,000 for Huck Finn). A Very Good copy in the publisher's original blue cloth, stamped in black and gilt. Without any repairs to the cloth (which is uncommon). Rear inner hinge professionally repaired, otherwise untouched and in very good shape internally. Chips to the cloth at the spine ends, less than 1/4 of a inch at the top and 1/16 of an inch at the base, some fraying to the corners, otherwise a tidy copy. One of the classic American novels, Twain's bildungsroman follows the adventures of Tom Sawyer - and his friend Huck Finn -- in St. Petersburg, Missouri told with Twain's characteristic and unmatchable wit and humor. It would become his best-selling book and its sequel, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," is arguably the greatest American novel of all time. "Mr. Samuel Clemens has taken the boy of the Southwest for the hero of his new book… and has presented him with a fidelity to circumstance which loses no charm by being realistic in the highest degree, and which gives incomparably the best picture of life in that region as yet known to fiction." (Contemporary Atlantic Monthly Review). Very Good.
