The draining of Lake Fucino: accomplished by His Excellency Prince Alexander Torlonia *ATLAS VOLUME*: Dessechement du lac Fucino execute par S. E. le prince Alexandre Torlonia: Precis historique et technique

Propaganda Press, Rome, 1876-01-01. First Edition. Paperback. Good. Atlas Volume only (l'Atlante). Large folio, 47 x 59.5 cm. 20 chromolithographic plates. Notably large lithograph of Panorama du lac, 112 x 59 cm. Cover has minor toning, a few chips/tears to wraps/margins. Lovely plates inside. <br> The Fucine Lake was Italy's 3rd largest lake. The lake was 37 m. in circumference and 65 ft. deep. Julius Caesar first envisioned clearing the late. The Emperors Claudius and Trajan attempted to lower the lake level and regulate the height with an extensive underground canal system. (The lake flooded the surrounding areas and had no natural outflow.) With the fall of the Empire, sediment and vegetation blocked the canal and earthquakes caused the ancient drainage system to fail. From 1862-1875 the engineer Jean Francois Mayor de Montricher built a 6 km canal that drained the entire lake, creating an extraordinarily rich agricultural region near Avezzano. One of the most signficant fluvial engineering achievements of man.

THE RECORD OF A COPPERHEAD. HOW DANIEL MARCY HELPED THE REBELS! HIS BASE BETRAYAL OF THE STATE! [caption title]

[New Hampshire, 1876. Broadside, 24 x 18 3/4 inches. Lightly creased, else very good. Archivally matted. Daniel Marcy (1809-93) was a New Hampshire sea captain and Congressman, first elected in 1863. He ran for governor in 1874, and this broadside attacks both his voting record and his integrity, accusing him of Confederate sympathies during the Civil War, a ploy known as "waving the bloody shirt," in effect accusing the opponent of murdering the sons of voters. The large broadside, which reads at the bottom, "Post this up in a conspicuous place," details Marcy's votes in Congress, which include tabling a resolution to abolish slavery; voting against punishing guerillas; voting against the appeal of the Fugitive Slave Law, and later against amending the Constitution to abolish slavery. It also includes the text of the only speech he made in Congress, which the author has labeled "Rebel Speech." Marcy was defeated by a narrow margin in the election, losing to the Republican, Person C. Cheney. A rare and interesting piece. OCLC records only one similar item at the New Hampshire Historical Society.

The Hunting of the Snark: An Agony in Eight Fits

London: Macmillan and Co., 1876 Illustrated by Henry Holiday. First edition, first printing, with "baker" on page 83 and a single leaf of publisher's advertisements. Publisher's decorative light tan boards with illustrations by Holiday in black, lettered in black, all edges gilt, black coated endpapers. Near fine, with some light fraying to the spine ends, very light spotting to the front board, sturdy binding, bright and clean interior. Overall, a very tight and fresh copy. In this poem, Carroll returns to the setting of "Jabberwocky," the nonsense poem that was published as part of his 1872 novel Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There. Specifically, "The Hunting of the Snark" tells the story of ten sailors, each of whose name begins with the letter B, who are in search of a fearsome creature known as the "snark" which they fear may be an especially dangerous sort known as a "boojum." Like "Jabberwocky" this poem is filled with fantastical adventures, impossible scenarios, and gibberish words.. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

The Second Illustrated Library Edition of Dickens' Works (in 30 volumes) - with The Life of Dickens (in 3 volumes)

London: Chapman and Hall, 1876. Thirty-three volumes in total, uniformly bound by Bumpus in full tan calf with raised bands and gilt details on the spines, all edges gilt, illustrated throughout. Volumes with some wear to the spine ends, but all boards firmly attached and no cracking to the joints or hinges. Internally in excellent condition. A very handsome set of Dickens' major works. "The Library Edition came about largely because of the suggestion of Forster that while Dickens's works were available in volumes in the Cheap Edition and in reprints of the serial parts, there was no high-quality edition that would appeal to the wealthy... With a dedication to Forster, the Library Edition appeared in 22 volumes in 1858-9 at 7s 6d per volume... Recognizing the continuing potential for sales of Dickens's works, Chapman and Hall in 1873 published a prospectus for the Second Illustrated Library Edition, containing, they contended, all the works the novelist wished to preserve. Calling it the first well-printed issue, with specially cast type and better paper than that used in previous editions, this set was published in 30 volumes between 1873 and 1876 and sold at £15 for the set, a high price for the time" (Oxford Reader's Companion to Dickens, pp. 205-206). Charles Dickens is considered one of the greatest novelists of the English language (critic Harold Bloom considers him one of the greatest writers in the history of the Western World). He was easily the most widely read and popular writer of his own era and remains so today - for Dickens has never been out of print and his works have been adapted into over 200 films or television series as well as countless stage dramas. He is an iconic figure in England as well, appearing on the 10 pound note and being voted one of the "100 Greatest Britons" of all time in a 2002 BBC poll. Dickens style is noted for its incredible skill with caricature and satire - indeed, one usually need only mutter the name of a character of his to conjure up a vision of that character's entire self. A master storyteller, his work often depicted the less savory and neglected side of England as well. The number of writers who respect or have been influenced by him is countless, and include such luminaries as Tolstoy, Orwell, and Conrad.

Epitome of the ancient history of Japan,: Including a guide book,

Nagasaki, Japan: 'Rising Sun' Office, Nagasaki, 1876. First Edition. Hardcover. Acceptable/Fair. An ex-library copy in a library binding, stamps & stickers throughout. Errata slip tipped to the last page. A classic ands scarce "Lost Tribe of Israel" theory, Illustrations of the Epitome... was published separately at a later date. From Wikipedia: "Nicholas McLeod (fl. 1868â??1889), in some accounts called Norman McLeod, was a native of the Isle of Skye, Scotland known for his theory that the Japanese people descended from the Lost Tribes of Israel.Tudor Parfitt describes McLeod as...a Scot who started his career in the herring industry before he ended up in Japan as a missionary...[1]Beyond that is very little known for certain about him except that he published a book in 1878 in Nagasaki called Epitome of the ancient history of Japan (cover title: Japan and the Lost Tribes of Israel) and another in Kyoto under the title Illustrations to the Epitome of the ancient history of Japan, including illustrations to the guide book.[2]The thesis of these extraordinary books was that the holy class of Japan is descended from the Lost Tribes of Israel. He claimed that the first known king of Japan was called Osee and came to the throne in 730 B.C., identifying him with Hoshea, the last king of Israel, who died in 722 B.C. The books contain extensive comparisons of the religious rituals of Judaism and Shintoism as evidence of the links between ancient Israel and Japan.[3]McLeod dedicated the book Epitome of the ancient history of Japan published in 1878 to "Rve. William Mackenzie (Late of North Leith Free Church, Scotland)".[4] According to Zvi Ben-Dor Benite, MacLeod had been a missionary who spent decades in Japan and Korea "searching for the true Israelites".[5] The following passage is an example from the book in which McLeod draws correlations between his observations on Japan and the fulfillment of biblical prophecy. The civilized race of the Aa. Inus, the Tokugawa and the Machi No Hito of the large towns, by dwelling in the tent or tabernacle shaped houses first erected by Jin Mu Tenno, have fulfilled Noah's prophecy regarding Japhet, "He shall dwell in the tents of Shem."(McLeod, 1878. p. 7).
