HIGAYON LEV ISRAELITISCHES GEBETBUCH FÜR DIE HÄUSLICHE ANDACHT [INCLUDING THE FIRST AMERICAN REFORM HAGGADAH] [BOUND WITH] GEBETE FÜR KINDER [AS ISSUED] (1875) .

Philadelphia. 1875.. Hardback. 1st edition thus. Period-style half leather, 8vo, [4], 164, 20 pages (188 pages total) Text in Hebrew and German. Goldman 63; This edition unrecorded and apparently unknown to Ya'ari or Yudlov. THE FIRST AMERICAN REFORM HAGGADAH. Higayon Lev (Logic of the Heart) was a liturgical volume for private devotion which was published to supplement the popular Avodat Yisrael prayerbook that Jastrow had created, based on the earlier work of Benjamin Szold. Jastrow’s revisions “creatively modified the classical contours of the Siddur preserved in Szold’s version and added many new prayers. ” Among its contents are: selections from Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers) ; daily prayers for women, children (and adults who lack the time to complete the regular liturgy) , all accompanied by a non-literal German translation. There is also a fascinating appendix of children’s prayers which includes, in addition to the more standard basic prayers, special prayers to be recited on one’s birthday as well as on a parent’s birthday. The most important component of the new edition however is Jastrow's Haggadah, (pages 35-54) , the first printed in America that demonstrates the influence of Reform. Here, the Hebrew elements are reduced to a minimum and incorporate many emendations, even to such quintessential texts as Ha Lahma Anya, Vehi She’amdah and the Four Questions (here reduced to a single query) . When Jastrow reprinted the text with an English translation three years later, he wrote, "this plain narrative is well adapted to suggest many a thought as to what duties are incumbent on the Israelites of our own days, and especially in countries like ours where the morn of religious liberty has already dawned and is shedding its roseate light over all inhabitants alike. ” SUBJECT(S) : Judaism -- Prayers and devotions. Reform Judaism -- Liturgy -- Texts. Siddurim. OCLC lists 8 copies worldwide. A copy sold at auction in 2015 for over USD 9, 000 with premium.         Journey across the Western Interior of Australia.

London: Sampson Low, Marston, Low, & Searle,, 1875. With an Introduction and Additions by Charles Eden Esq.. Edited by H.W. Bates. Octavo. Original green sand-grained cloth over bevelled boards, title gilt to the spine together with a block of Warburton Beetle - Stigmodera Murrayi - and in black to the front board within an elaborate frame in black and with a gilt block of The Dust Storm, frame repeated to the lower board in blind, marron surface-paper endpapers. Steel-engraved portrait frontispiece and eight other steel-engraved plates, vignette of the beetle to the title page, folding map, coloured in outline, at the rear. Just a touch rubbed at the extremities, head and tail of the spine crumpled, hinges just starting, one plate loose, the map with a few short splits, now professionally repaired, the publisher's catalogue sprung after the map, but overall a very good copy. First edition. In 1853, after nearly 30 years of service in the Royal Navy and the army of the HEIC, Warburton (1813?1889) retired to Adelaide. He was soon appointed Commissioner of Police in the Colony of South Australia, a position that he held for 14 years before being dismissed in controversial circumstances, later being appointed chief staff officer of the volunteer force of South Australia. "In 1872 Warburton was selected by the government of South Australia to command an expedition to open up overland communication between that colony and Western Australia. When the project was abandoned by the government and taken up by two colonists, Thomas Elder and Walter Hughes, Warburton remained in command" (ODNB). Some sixteen months later they finally reached Roebourne, ravaged by scurvy and having survived only through having eaten their camels, "They were the first explorers to cross the continent from the centre to the west and to survive a crossing of the Great Sandy Desert and nearly 1000 miles of country hitherto unknown to Europeans. On their return to Adelaide they were entertained at a public banquet, at which Warburton, who had lost the sight of one eye, attributed his survival to his Aborigine companion Charlie. The legislative assembly voted him £1000, and the Royal Geographical Society awarded him their gold medal for 1874". Physically undermined by his privations Warburton "had neither the health nor desire to undergo the further literary labour necessary to elaborate a complete narrative for general readers" (Preface), so the present account was worked up from his report to Elder and Hughes by his brother-in-law, Charles H. Eden, with verbal additions "of considerable interest and importance" from Warburton, the text finally edited by the famed collector-naturalist H.W. Bates. Bookplate of W.P Bodkin, barrister and son of the legal writer Sir William Bodkin to the front pastedown.

The first to try to catch the ball was Mr Fenton, but when the cannon was fired it struck him on the head and knocked him down. He was conveyed to the Infirmary, where it was found that his skull was fractured, and that he had received injuries to the nose".

Fascinating collection of monograms, nearly all bearing a crown or coronet,

1875 - each elaborately designed to be a unique mark of the owner, many in glowing colours, assembled by Mrs Wakelin, (b. 1837 or 1838, née Conway, later Mrs William Morter), nanny to the children of Imperial Crown Prince Friedrich (III) and 'Vicky', eldest daughter of Queen Victoria, from about 1860 till 1879, neatly cut from letters and envelopes received by Vicky from European and British Royalty and higher nobility, including Sweden, Denmark, the German States and Austria, about 15 are addresses such as Prussia House, S.W. or Frogmore, three are vignette photos including Ludwig II of Bavaria, over 200 items of which about 25 are duplicates, circa 1870 - a few small defects, some faint traces of gum expertly removed Particularly striking are the large designs of Crown Princess Victoria, with her and her husband's arms asymmetrically arranged, of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, and of Queen Louise of Denmark in a tall column. Occasionally the same design is found in varied colours or in black for mourning, as with the small AE within the garter for the Prince of Wales (Edward VII). The 1870s may be reckoned the high-water mark of these designs for variety and ingenuity.

[WWV 86d]. Götterdämmerung... Vollständiger Klavierauszug von Karl Klindworth.

Mainz: B. Schott's Söhne [PN 21500], [April 1875]. Folio. Contemporary dark brown tooled half calf with dark green cloth boards, decorative initials "P.R." to upper, gilt titling to spine in ruled compartments, all edges gilt. 1f. (general title, "Der Ring des Nibelungen), 1f. (title), 1f. (half-title), [1] (cast list and contents), 2-357, [i] (blank) pp. Lithographed throughout. Cloth portion of binding slightly stained, worn and frayed at edges, light blue watered silk endpapers slightly soiled. Slightly foxed and browned. First Edition. Fuld p. 465. Deathridge, Geck and Voss (WWV) p. 402. Klein p. 51. The general title and half title are common to the full scores of all four Ring operas. Götterdämmerung is the fourth opera in the Ring cycle. Excerpts were first performed in a concert at the Musikverein in Vienna on March 25, 1875; the entire work was first performed as part of the Ring cycle at Bayreuth on August 17, 1876. "The final opera of the Ring... provides an appropriately weighty conclusion to the epic cycle. 26 years elapsed from the time Wagner made his first prose draft for the work (then called Siegfrieds Tod) to the completion of the full score, with inevitable consequences in terms of stylistic unity. Retrogressive elements of grand opera exist side by side with motivic integration representative of Wagner's most mature style. And yet, the stylistic integrity of Götterdämmerung is scarcely compromised, so skilfully are the disparate elements welded together and so intense the dramaturgical conviction. The resources and stamina demanded by the work (from both singers and orchestra), combined with its sheer length and theatrical potency, make it one of the most daunting yet rewarding undertakings in the operatic repertory."         Relations entre les phénomènes électriques et capillaires [Lippmann's Thesis]

Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1875. SCARCE FIRST PRINTING IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of Lippmann's famous "Thesis", presenting his capillary electrometer, the foundation for the electrocardiogram. The capillary electrometer "was an apparatus that used a new physical principle to measure electrical potential and is changes... The concept behind the instrument was really quite simple and elegant and had been worked out in Kirchoff's laboratory in Heidelberg by a young Parisian physicist, Gabriel Lippmann. Lippmann found that the surface tension of a liquid such as mercury, when covered with another electrolyte such as dilute sulfuric acid, was dependent in a complex way upon the potential difference across the phase boundary. Change the voltage by even a minuscule amount and one changed the surface tension, and hence the shape of the meniscus: it moved up and down. Converting this principle into an instrument was equally simple. One took a glass tube perhaps one-quarter inch across, pulled out one end into a capillary, filled it with mercury, inverted the capillary end into a bath of dilute sulfuric acid, and applied a potential across the mercury/sulfuric boundary. The tiny meniscus, no more than one-fiftieth of a millimeter across, could be viewed through a microscope and could be seen to move almost instantaneously with changes in electromotive force of as little as .0001 volt. Lippmann published preliminary accounts of his experiments on electrocapillarity in 1874 and incorporated a full theoretical treatment into a Thèse he presented to the Paris Faculté des Sciences in April 1875 and printed in July" (Coleman, The Invesitative Enterprise)."The invention of the capillary electrometer in the early 1870s by Gabriel Lippmann led to the first recording of a human electrocardiogram by Augustus D. Waller" and "for more than two decades the capillary electrometer was the best method available to physiologists for recording the electrical activity of the of the heart" (Iaizzo, Handbook of Cardiac Anatomy; Fleming, A Short History of Cardiology).Relations entre les phénomènes électriques et capillaires. Quarto, original wrappers; custom box. pp. 1-58.         Two well-presented tourist photograph albums.

Italy: Enrico van Lint, Emanuele Lupi, Alfred Noack, Giacomo Brogi Studio, & Carlo Naya, c.1875 - 2 volumes, quarto (338 x 272 mm & 320 x 240 mm). Both bound in contemporary full vellum, the larger with three panels of elaborate gilt tooling on spine, sides with gilt arabesque panels, front cover titled "Roma" with gilt stamp of the she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus, red edges, gilt & brown endpapers patterned in Renaissance style; the smaller with decoratively gilt tooled spine, sides with gilt & red ruled borders enclosing gilt & red strapwork panels, red edges, white moiré endpapers. Bindings a little rubbed and soiled (covers of "Roma" marked and spine dulled), leaves slightly cockled, scattered light foxing but the photographs in excellent condition. 204 albumen print photographs (measuring 140 x 259 mm up to 210 x 305 mm), mounted on thick pale blue-grey or white card stock, linen hinges, nearly all with identifying captions in manuscript (English) or letterpress (Italian) below image. Very appealing pair of Victorian Grand Tour albums, containing over 200 large albumen print photographs of Pisa, Genoa, Florence, Assisi, Amalfi, Naples, Venice, and Milan, sculpture (largely classical but extending to Bernini and Canova) and artwork in the Vatican (with a focus on paintings and frescoes by Raphael) and other collections; the assemblage breaks down as follows: Roma contains 43 of sculpture, 60 of paintings; the smaller volume: 52 views (largely exteriors), 9 of sculpture, 38 of paintings, 2 of theatre interiors from prints (San Carlo, Naples and La Scale, Milan). The Rome volume carries the bookseller's ticket of Enrico Andersen, whose well-established business in a handsome building at 30 Via Due Macelli, south of the Spanish steps, specialised in supplying luxury bindings and stationery to a high-end clientele. The smaller album opens with some excellent images of Pisa (the leaning tower, Baptistry, Duomo) by Enrico van Lint (1808-1884), "a first-rank protagonist in the early days of the calotype in Italy" (Luminous Lint online). These are followed by a striking image captured by Emanuele Lupi of the port at Genoa (c. 1875), the harbour packed with masted ships. There are a number of other images from the studio of Alfred Noack (1833-1895), who "photographed the most important artistic cities of northern Italy, but the fulcrum of his research and great part of his energy were dedicated to the Ligurian Riviera and Genoa" (ibid.), and many images of sites in Florence and Milan. The photographs of sculpture and paintings in the Vatican collections are the work of Giacomo Brogi (1822-1881) and his son Carlo. Finally, there is a series of memorable images of Venice in the 1860s and 70s by Carlo Naya (1816-1882), one of the most prominent photographers working with the tourist market in Venice. Many such albums are found in a smaller format and with fewer photographs, so these are particularly attractive examples of a more lavish production and date from the rapidly vanishing era of the Grand Tour.

The Communistic Societies of the United States; from Personal Visit and Observation.

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1875. Large octavo, frontispiece and 16 plates, illustrated; publisher's cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt. First edition of this influential and extensive study of the communitarian ideal in the United States.Charles Nordhoff (1830-1901) emigrated to the United States as a child, and went on to have a varied career as sailor, journalist and writer. His grandson Charles Bernard Nordhoff is the famous historian of the Bounty. In The Communistic Societies of the United States, Nordhoff recounts his travels to many of the socialistic societies which became popular in the nineteenth century, most famously the Shakers of Mount Lebanon, the Rappite township at 'Harmony' and the Oneida Community. As Nordhoff points out in his Introduction, he hoped that a study of these communities might provide 'useful hints toward the solution of the labor question'. Throughout, the work displays a thoroughness and lack of hysteria which supports his claim to have 'thought it best to give at first an impartial and not unfriendly account of each commune.'. A very good, fresh copy.
