Central Park New York, Preparing for A Drive

circa 1875. Hand-coloured lithograph. 17 ¾ x 24 3/8 inches, plus black- printed border, 1½ inches, extending to the sheet edges. 17 3/4 x 24 1/4 inches. 20 1/2 x 26 7/8 inches. This large, colorful and lively depiction of two children and their mother near one of the lakes in Central Park is typical of the prints issued by Charles Schile, a German immigrant, whose black borders are a common feature. The goat pulled children's carriage and the luxurious clothing denote an aristocratic New York family. Central Park was open to the poorer class once a week, and sometimes not even then. Harry T. THE HARVARD BOOK. PAUL REVERE ENGRAVING

Cambridge. Very good. 1875. First edition.. 3/4 red morocco with tan leather boards, t.e.g. by MacDonald Bindery. . 2 volumes. A Series of Historical, Biographical and Descriptive Sketches. Frederick O. Vaille and Henry Alden Clark first compiled The Harvard Book in 1875 as a souvenir for fellow members of the Harvard College classes of 1874 and 1875. A comprehensive history of campus life to 1875, the book describes Harvard's academic mission, customs, building, organizations and prominent faculty and alumni. 30 fine full page heliotypes, two lithographs and a copper engraving by Paul Revere, struck from the original plate. & & "The Harvard Book" stands pre-eminently apart from the other histories of the University. It comprises two large quarto volumes making upwards of eight hundred pages, printed on fine paper, with press-work as good as the University Press of Cambridge could do. The type used was new, and every line shows the handiwork of a competent and careful pressman. In many respects the illustrations make it the best-illustrated book published in this country prior to 1875. The views of the then-existing buildings and the portraits are heliotype photographs, giving certainly the most accurate pictures possible; and the prints, it is said, will permanently retain their original appearance. The subjects of the illustrations include almost every thing to be looked for in any illustrated book on Harvard University. In one particular, this history meets a want not supplied by the others. It gives historical and descriptive sketches, illustrated with views, of all the societies; and biographies, illustrated with portraits, of the chief officers of all departments.& The whole work elicited so much admiration elsewhere, that a similar undertaking, "The Yale Book," has since been carried out at Yale College. Of "The Harvard Book" there were about five hundred copies of the first edition printed, and perhaps one hundred copies of the second edition. These six hundred copies will enhance in value as time rolls on; for there will probably never be printed another edition, as the illustrations and negatives were wholly consumed by the fire in December last, which destroyed the office and warehouse of the present proprietors and publishers, Houghton, Mifflin, & Co., of Boston The Harvard Register. Moses King, 1880.& & There are a couple of dents to board edges and minor rubbing to leather. Strong and intact. No foxing Rare.
&
&
&
<A HREF='http://www.oldbooks.com/images/PHBOOKSVA71157c.jpg BR .

Natural History: London. Taylor & Francis for Henry Sotheran Ltd. . Lithographed by Walter. 1875-1888. Original hand-coloured lithograph of Josephina Parrakeets, from John Gould's "Birds of New Guinea. " Volume 5, Plate 12. A pair of brightly coloured parrakeets upon a branch. Bright and generally clean; minor spotting to outer margins; very good. John Gould (1804- 1881) Ornithologist, first trained as a taxidermist, opening a business in London in 1824. In 1827 he became the first Curator and Preserver at the Museum of the Zoological Society of London; there he oversaw the collection of birds from Himalaya which led to his first published work "A Century of Birds from the Himalaya Mountains" [ 1830-32]. Throughout his life he eventually published 41 volumes with approximately 3000 plates. covering birds of Europe, Great Britain, Asia, Australia and Papua New Guinea. The works were published in livraisons, by pre-paid subscrption, each part cost three guineas. In the early works he was aided in the creation of the plates by his wife Elizabeth Gould, Edward Lear and others. Gould died in February 1881 having completed the first 12 parts of the present work " The Birds of New Guinea and the adjacent Papuan Islands, including many new species recently discovered in Australia. " As the title suggests he intended the work to supplement the "Birds of Australia" with the newly discovered species. After his death, Henry Sotherans purchased his entire stock and copyrights and in a notice to the Subsribers they stated their intention to complete the unfinished works [" Birds of Asia" and" Birds of New Guinea"] using all Gould's staff, artists and colourists under the supervision of William Hart, and with the text edited by Richard Bowdler Sharpe who was Senior Assistant in the Department of Zoology at the British Museum.
