New York: Baker & Godwin, 1875.. viii,[3]-443pp. plus three colored folding maps. Modern three-quarter calf. Embossed library stamp on titlepage and first page of text, three leaves with slight fore-edge chipping, not affecting text. Maps neatly reinforced on folds. Very good overall. A rare report on the troubles along the Texas-Mexico border in the years following Texas' independence and eventual absorption into the United States. This is the English- language edition of the lengthy report of the Mexican Commission sent to investigate the issue, and its printing was ordered by the Mexican government (a Spanish- language edition was published the same year). All manner of crimes were taking place along the border, including robbery and horse and cattle rustling. Americans blamed Mexicans for the crimes, while the Mexicans alleged that Americans dressed as Indians were the perpetrators. An American commission had already investigated, and absolved Americans of wrongdoing. This Mexican report puts the blame on the Americans, and argues that the Norteamericanos either refuse to control the Indians within their borders, or in fact encourage them to raid into Mexico in order to destabilize the neighbor to the south. Accounts of the troubles, dating back many years, are given in detail herein, blame is assigned, and solutions are proposed. The folding maps include a version of Josiah Gregg's 1844 "Map of the Indian Territory Northern Texas and New Mexico," a map of the states of Coahuila and Nuevo Leon (showing the routes taken by raiding parties), and a large and attractive "Mapa del Rio Grande." The highly accomplished map of the Rio Grande is one of the most accurate and important of the period, showing the river from its mouth to the Big Bend, and identifying towns, rivers, mountains, forts, roads, and ranches along the border. "A work of great documentary value" - Decker. A fascinating account of clashes between cultures - American, Mexican, and Native American, along this long borderland. This report is scarce in and of itself; it is rather rare with the three maps, as here. HOWES I32, "aa." GRAFF 2765. ADAMS HERD 558, 2264. DECKER 40:324. EBERSTADT 122:197.

        PITTA FORSTENI - Hooded Pitta

London 1875 - ***If you frame up this item with Arader Galleries you can take a 50% discount off the listed price of this work of art*** This splendid hand-colored, folio size lithograph from John Gould's (1804-1881) outstanding work "Birds of New Guinea " is in excellent condition, measures 14 ½” x 21 ½” and magnificently displays the author's scientific skill and attention to detail. Gould conceived of this sweeping, lavish book as a complement to his unprecedented Birds of Asia. The Birds of New Guinea, published in London from 1875 to 1888 was Gould's last full-scale work, left incomplete on his death in 1881. Gould completed twelve of the twenty-five parts, and the task of finishing the project fell to Richard Bowdler Sharpe, a superbly qualified successor, who had been Gould's colleague, assistant and friend. One of Gould's most exotic works, the five magnificent volumes of the Birds of New Guinea contain an extensive series of beautiful images of birds of paradise, bower birds, parrots, parakeets, cockatoos, kingfishers and hawk-owls. All of the 320 images are extraordinary for their color and artistry, interesting backdrops and animated compositions. The overwhelming variety of species depicted in Birds of New Guinea, was the most comprehensive chronicle of the island's ornithology ever issued. John Gould was without question the most prolific natural history artist of the nineteenth century. He worked during a period of intense fascination with discoveries in natural history, especially regarding knowledge of the wildlife of exotic lands. Gould shared the romantic enthusiasm of his time for such subjects, as well as the popular impulse to catalog exotic wildlife. He combined his passion for natural history with outstanding scientific, artistic, and entrepreneurial talents. Drawing on these abilities, he embarked on a series of projects that would eventually make him the leading publisher of ornithological illustrations in Victorian Britain. Gould’s unparalleled career spanned five decades, and he produced a monumental series of books of birds throughout the world. Rich, vibrant color is an important attribute of the best 19th Century prints. Many prints by John Gould found on the market today have modern color that affects both the appearance and the value of these great works. John Gould died in 1881 still actively illustrating and producing fine bird books. His stock of unsold copies, unbound text and plates in various states, lithographic stones, drawings and paintings, amounted to nearly three tons. Many of the uncolored pulls from Gould’s works have been recolored in the last thirty years, and these are often found on the market. Fortunately, the difference between original and modern color can be discerned by looking carefully at the print. When modern color is applied to 180 year old paper, the application is inconsistent; the cellulose of the aged paper has begun to breakdown and can no longer evenly absorb the watercolors, resulting in a splotchy uneven appearance. All of the Gould bird prints in Arader Galleries' inventory have exquisite original color. The vastly superior quality of original color can be clearly differentiated from new color by its smooth and even appearance. The inks have noticeably deeper, richer tones. The difference can also be seen in the lovely surface "sheen" that results from the application of gum arabic when the lithograph was first pulled. The hand coloring of engravings and lithographs reached its zenith in the 19th Century. Works that still display their original color are more rewarding to view, and will better hold their value in the years to come.

The Jummoo and Kashmir Territories: A Geographical Account

Edward Stanford, London 1875 - Rare 1st edition, of which the 1877 book 'The Northern Barrier of India' is an abridgement. Has 568 pp. incl. index; many illustrations including 4 Woodbury-types (an uncommon printing process which makes photographs seem very lucid and 3-dimensional); and in the rear, folding maps; a Snow Map, a Race Map, a Language Map, a Faith Map, a Political Map, chart of 3 Isometric Views, and a chart of 4 Vertical Sections. There is also a folding chart, 'Genealogy of the Rajas of Jummo', to accompany Appendix 6. The binding is 3/4 leather, very worn, and professionally rebacked. The original leather of the spine has been preserved; the title can barely be read. Marbled boards (matching endpapers) rubbed, bookplate on front pastedown. The brittle free endpapers are both breaking at the new hinges. The text is mostly very clean; there are a couple of fingerprints in the margin of the photo, 'Kashmiri Brahmans'. Another photo, 'Dards', has a sm. chipped-off corner. The folding maps have outer edges a bit worn, but otherwise are nice; the Isometric Views have a tear starting at the bottom near the spine; the Vertical Sections is torn and separated at the first fold. Finally, the General Map which is supposed to be in the rear pocket is not present; a 'Map to Accompany the Travels of Captain Abbott', from another book, is there instead (it shows the Caspian Sea and parts of Persia & Afghanistan). Overall g+. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Centennial 1876 Calendar. J. S. Rivers, Superior Mercantile Printer, Stationer, Blank Books, Office Supplies. 74 Camp St., New Orleans.

New Orleans, (1875). - 11 3/4 x 16 3/4. An elaborate broadside calendar and trade card printed in metallic silver, bronze, and gold, and in black, blue, red, green, grey. Four corner fleurons in blue accompany 4 specialties: Lithographing, Engraving, Book Binding, Job Printing. Four "sidebars" contain annual statistics for the production of rice, molasses, sugar, and cotton. On coated heavy stock. A narrow two-inch strip of bottom edge, beginning at left corner, is missing; pin-hole in lower margin has a closed 1/4 inch tear. Very good copy. "Artistic printing" was a colorful, virtuoso performance by letterpress printers, intended in part to rival the effects of chromolithography. Not in Hummel, Southeast Broadsides. Uncommon.

San Francisco: Francis & Valentine, 1875. - 103pp. plus nine original mounted albumen photographs. 20th-century three- quarter morocco and blue cloth, spine gilt. Spine sunned. Frontispiece photograph with three small stains and the final two photographs exhibiting some moderate fading, else quite clean internally. A very good copy. A rare photographically illustrated account of a tour of Yosemite and the High Sierras, by one of the pioneer founders of the University of California. LeConte studied with Agassiz at Harvard before going to California to serve as professor of geology, and he was among the charter members of the Sierra Club. This work describe's LeConte's first expedition, with students of the University, into the Sierras, and the text wonderfully transmits LeConte's enthusiasm for the region and its natural beauty. In his autobiography he describes his first years in California as "very active ones for me, the wonderful new country, so different from any that I had previously seen, the climate, the splendid scenery, the active, energetic people, and the magnificent field for scientific, and especially for geological investigations." "A record of an excursion by Prof. LeConte and nine members of one of the early classes of the university. It is stated that but 20 copies were printed" - Cowan. The actual number of copies printed was almost certainly higher, perhaps as many as 120 (twelve for each member of the party). A beautiful book, with superb photographs depicting the range of northern California's natural splendor. The images are captioned on the mounts as follow: 1) ".Great Yosemite Fall" (frontispiece group portrait of the party). 2) "The Grizzly Giant." 3) "The High Sierras." 4) "The Gates of the Valley." 5) "Bridal Veil Fall." 6) "The Heart of the Sierras. Lake Tenaya." 7) "Day-Dawn in Yosemite. The Merced River." 8) ".North Dome, South (Half) Dome." 9) "Montgomery St., San Francisco. Where our trip ended." HOWES L175. COWAN (1914), p.137. Otto Krisch was the engineer on board "Tegetthoff", the expedition ship of the Austro-Hungarian North Pole commanded by Karl Weyprecht and Julius Payer. In the spring of 1874 Payer led a sledge party that explored much of the western part of the archhipelago, as far north as Mys Fligeli (Cape Fligeley), Ostrov Rudol'fa (Rudolph island), the northern tip of the archipelago. In the fall the ship was abandoned and her crew retreated south by sledge and boat.         Steam Locotmotive] An original ink and watercolour drawing of an American steam locomotive

[United States 1875 - An expertly rendered drawing of one of the most powerful locomotives from the golden age of steam locomotion in the United States. The first American-built locomotive, the Best Friend, came into service in 1830. Lomomotive production reached its zenith in the decade following the Civil War, at the time of the present drawing. This "mogul" type locomotive is shown with cowcatcher and a 2-6-0 wheel configuration (2 small wheels at the front and six large driving wheels in the rear), a large headlamp with an American eagle emblem on its side, a wooden cab on which is neatly written "Mogul" and a riveted fire box below the boiler which shows a B within a six-pointed star within a circle. This powerful Mogul type locomotive was used primarily as a freight engine and was produced by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and Brooks Locomotive Works. The artist of the present drawing, G. H. Cushman, has signed his work at the bottom right on the rail. Original pen, ink and watercolour drawing on wove paper of a Mogul type locomotive, all within original ink ruled border, signed by the artist on the rail at the far right side.         A Monograph of the Trogonidae, or Family of Trogons

published by the Author, London 1875 - Period full dark brown crushed morocco, covers elaborately bordered in gilt, spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and fourth, the others with an overall repeat decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges Revised and expanded second edition of Gould's monograph on trogons, including the most beautiful depictions of these colourful tropical birds. As Gould states in his preface, this revised and expanded edition was "in reality a new publication, the plates having been redrawn, and many (i.e. 12) new species figured for the first time." The depiction of the birds is more elaborate than the first edition of 1838, with artfully arranged perches of tropical plants and occasional background landscapes. "The Trogons may dispute the palm of beauty with the Hummingbirds. Their plumage in certain parts shines with metallic brilliancy, and exhibits all the colours of the rainbow" (Introduction). The trogons depicted within this monograph are largely species resident of the Americas, including Mexico, Panama, Columbia, and Brazil. Anker 171; Fine Bird Books (1990), p. 101; Nissen IVB 381; Wood p. 365; Zimmer p. 261; Sauer 21. (21 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches). 47 hand-coloured lithographed plates after and by John Gould and W.         Illustrations of the Book of Job. With Descriptive Letterpress, and a Sketch of the ArtistÕs Life and Works. By Charles Eliot Norton

Boston: James R. Osgood, 1875. Large 4to, 79pp., and heliotype facsimiles of the title-page and 21 plates of the original. Original brown cloth stamped in gilt and black, gilt edges, a very good copy. First American edition, one of BlakeÕs earliest appearances in the USA (Roberts in Boston published the Rossetti edition of the Works in 1875). It is also the first reproduction in facsimile of the Book of Job, the first edition to contain commentary, and the first American reproduction of any series of Blake's designs. Norton, who here introduces Blake to an American audience with his preface summing up BlakeÕs life and principle works, notes that he has made Ã’free useÓ of his friend Dante Gabriel RossettiÕs commentary on the plates, which is interleaved with the text here. It is exceptionally scarce: no copy has appeared at auction since 1975, and Essick (Blake in the Marketplace) does not record a copy sold since 1992. Bentley, BB, 422.
