Three hundred French portraits representing personages of the Courts of Francis I, Henry II, and Francis II, by Clouet. Auto-lithographed from the originals at Castle Howard, Yorkshire.

        Insectivorous Plants.

London: John Murray,, 1875. With illustrations. Octavo. Original green bead-grain cloth neatly rebacked with the original gilt lettered and decorated spine laid down, corners refurbished, blind panelled covers, brown coated endpapers. Housed in a dark green quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. 30 wood-engraved illustrations in the text. Endpapers chipped at fore edge. A very good copy. First edition, of the first printing of a thousand copies. Presentation copy, inscribed in a secretarial hand on the half-title "From the author"; it was customary for Murray's clerk, at the direction of Darwin, to so inscribe copies for presentation. With, tipped to verso of half-title, an autograph note signed by Darwin: "I have told my publisher to send a copy of my Insectivorous Plants to your private address, which I hope that you will accept, & do not trouble yourself to acknowledge its receipt. - My dear Sir yours v[er]y sincerely Ch. Darwin". Inscribed in pencil on the front free endpaper "Masters" (and with some pencilled marginalia and a newspaper clipping concerning insectivorous plants loosely inserted); this is the botanist and journal editor Maxwell Tylden Masters (1833-1907), who kept up a long correspondence with Darwin, and whose father, William, a nurseryman, is described by Freeman as a "friendly correspondent of CD" (Charles Darwin: A Companion). Insectivorous Plants was reviewed in The Gardener's Chronicle while under Masters's editorship. Darwin's "meticulous studies [of insectivorous plants] form a minor contribution to the evolutionary series by the study of the adaptations of such plants to impoverished conditions" (Freeman). Masters himself was a specialist in plant teratology, or the study of malformations and abnormal growth, an area that also greatly interested Darwin, particularly with regard to that effect in peloric orchids. "The book was published on 2 July, 1875, in a standard binding without inserted advertisements. It is stated that 3,000 were printed, of which 2,700 were sold to the trade at once. This cannot be strictly true because both the second and third thousands of the same year stated their thousands on the title pages" (ibid.). An appealing association copy, pairing the great naturalist and one of the most distinguished English botanists of the second half of the 19th century.

Designs for Encaustic and Geometric Tile Pavement (Spine title)

Stoke-on-Trent, England: The Campbell Brick and Tile Co. (and) Robert Minton Taylor Tile Works, 1875. Hardbound. Ex library. Plates are clean and vibrant. Library buckram binding. 36 color lithographed pages. All plates bear the stamp in light blue ink of "T. Aspinwall & Son, Sole Agents, 38 Murray Street, NY" at the top of the page. There are 26 plates representing works from the Campbell Brick and Tile Co. with a common logo at the top of the page (this logo includes reference to awards given to them in Dublin in 1872 and Vienna in 1873); there are two plates from this company with a variant logo; there are 8 plates representing work from Robert Minton Taylor Tile Works. It can be noted that the plates from The Campbell Brick and Tile Company list Colin Minton Campbell as the Proprietor, and Robert Minton Taylor as the Manager. The colors in these lithographed plates are extraordinary in their freshness and brightness. There is minor offsetting in spots, and the 8 Fulton plates are printed on slightly thicker stock. These plates would appear to date from 1869 to 1874. The other plates would appear to date from 1875 or after, which is when the Campbell Brick and Tile Company came into existence. Online research indicates many court cases involving Minton, Campbell and Tile manufacture at the time, and the myriad uses of the Minton name by Campbell. The plates illustrate different patterns of tile works that could be ordered (by number, which is unique to each plate illustration. While there does not appear to be duplication in these numbers, they presented in chronological order and the count is not continuous and unbroken. This is sold as a collection of extremely rare color lithographs of English tiles and tile-patterns that were available in the United States from the mid-1870s onward from these manufacturers. Only the University of Rochester appears to have anything similar to this publication, and their record states their copy to have 48 plates but there is no further description. I would not say this publication is missing plates based solely on that reference.

Przhevalsky of the Russian Staff Corps, Member of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society/ Edition of the Russian Geographical Society]

St. Petersburg: Typ. of V.S. Balashev, 1875. 2 vols. ix, 381, [1 - errata]; [4], 2, 29, [2], iv, 176, 55, 36, 114, iv, ii pp. Large Quarto. Contemporary quarter leather with gilt lettered titles on the spine and blind stamped decorative borders and corners on the boards. Owner's name written in ink, and numbers written in red pencil on both title pages, another owner's name written in ink on verso of the title page to vol. 2. Spines cracked on hinges, but repaired, minor foxing of the text, maps with a minor tear each, otherwise a very good set. First edition. Official account of Przhevalsky's first travel to Central Asia in 1870-1873, which made him world famous. Accompanied by only three men, he first explored the eastern frontiers of Central Asia, travelling from Kalgan (Zhangjiakou) as far as Duolun and Dalai Nuur Lake. During the next, major part of the travel, he explored the Ordos Plateau formed by the Ordos Loop of the Yellow River, crossed the Alashan section of the Gobi Desert and the Alashan range of the Nan Shan mountains, entering Marco Polo's little known ''country of Tanguts''. There he surveyed and mapped Lake Kokonor (Quinghai), discovered the Quaidam (Tsaidam) Basin west of the lake, and crossing the Burkhan Buddha range of the Kunlun Mountains, traversed the Tibetan plateau, going as far as the upper reaches of the Yangtse River. Due to the lack of resources the party had to turn back being about 850 km from Lhasa; Przhevalsky returned to Urga via the central part of the Gobi Desert which hasn't been visited by a European before. The expedition altogether went for over 11,800 km, produced first thorough descriptions of the Gobi, Ordos and Alashan Deserts, the Quaidam (Tsaidam) Basin and the Tibetan Plateau, mapped over twenty mountain ranges and seven new lakes; assembled voluminous zoological and botanical collections. The book consists of two volumes: the expedition account (v.1), and results of scientific observations (v. 2), the latter contains articles about the region's climate, birds, fish, and reptiles. The description of Mongolian and Tibetan flora which was planned to compile the third volume of the book was instead published as the first part of the series of Nauchnye Rezultaty puteshestviy N.M. Przhevalskogo v Tsentralnoy Azii… (i.e. Scientific Results of N.M. Przhevalsky's travels in Central Asia…; SPb., 1889). Chromolithographed plates depict mammals, birds, fish and reptiles; detailed chromolithographed map published on two large folding sheets represents the ''Route survey [executed] during the Travel of Przhevalsky in the Eastern Asian Plateau in 1871, 1872 and 1873''. The book was awarded with the Gold medal of the Russian Geographical Society (1874), a diploma of the International Geographical Congress in Paris (1875), prestigious Founder's Medal of the Royal Geographical Society (1879), and others; it was quickly translated into major European languages.

Also signed by Lieutenant William Badger, a close friend of Custer who survived the Black Hills Campaign. His son Tom, who filled out the body of this document, became General Custer's personal secretary in 1876 and was killed at Little Big Horn. By and large an excellent, early Japanese photographic album. Photographed by the most famous and outstanding foreign photographer of the period, Raimund Von Stillfried. With 15 large color photo examples of portraits, posed photos of ten Japanese women including one of a young woman with breast exposed, 3 of Japanese men, of the 8 smaller black and white photos, 6 of women, and a pair of Samurai-warriors, rickshaw coolies & women, palanquin & a woman. Other large color photos show shrines or temples in Nagasaki, Asakusa, gardens in Kyoto and Uyeno, Ainu, Mt. Fuji, Hakone and rural scenes. All images are sharp, with lovely, tasteful hand-coloring mostly pastels and well done. The first photo of a tattooed Japanese "Beto" is a bit damp stained in the margin and is illustrated in Fabian, on p.117 c.1800. Some very stunning portraits of Japanese women superbly composed and executed, a classic and wonderful work. Stillfried had one of the best eyes of any photographer to ever work in Japan. His compositions and candid photographs captured the true inner sense of an early and innocent Japan. This kind of graphic record was seldom match by any other photographer. Baron Raimund Von Stillfried's characteristic work is always R A R E and highly desirable, perhaps one of the best of any photographer to work in early Japan, especially in the foreign community in Yokohama, with excursions to Tokyo as well.

The first to try to catch the ball was Mr Fenton, but when the cannon was fired it struck him on the head and knocked him down. He was conveyed to the Infirmary, where it was found that his skull was fractured, and that he had received injuries to the nose\". - Eine Faltung angerissen. Versand D: 5,00 EUR
