Traces. of removal of rectangular labels from front covers, acidic offsetting. to one page-pair in volume one, rubbing to spine ends, a bright,. solid good copy overall. (#148265). First edition. "The author, a clergyman, produces here a hybrid of exposition and storytelling of the sort encountered most famously in Catherine Crowe's NIGHT SIDE OF NATURE (1848). Whether the numerous examples of the sort of phenomena enumerated in the book's subtitle are authentic or not, they constitute de facto stories (with characters, dialogue, action, etc.) letting the author preserve a discreet ambiguity regarding the reality of such phenomena while also giving him access to powerful images and atmosphere." - Robert Eldridge. The book had a U.S. edition the same year and another British edition in 1885. All of these are now uncommon.         Relations entre les phénomènes électriques et capillaires [Lippmann's Thesis]

Gauthier-Villars, Paris 1875 - SCARCE FIRST PRINTING IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of Lippmann's famous "Thesis", presenting his capillary electrometer, the foundation for the electrocardiogram. The capillary electrometer "was an apparatus that used a new physical principle to measure electrical potential and is changes? The concept behind the instrument was really quite simple and elegant and had been worked out in Kirchoff's laboratory in Heidelberg by a young Parisian physicist, Gabriel Lippmann. Lippmann found that the surface tension of a liquid such as mercury, when covered with another electrolyte such as dilute sulfuric acid, was dependent in a complex way upon the potential difference across the phase boundary. Change the voltage by even a minuscule amount and one changed the surface tension, and hence the shape of the meniscus: it moved up and down. Converting this principle into an instrument was equally simple. One took a glass tube perhaps one-quarter inch across, pulled out one end into a capillary, filled it with mercury, inverted the capillary end into a bath of dilute sulfuric acid, and applied a potential across the mercury/sulfuric boundary. The tiny meniscus, no more than one-fiftieth of a millimeter across, could be viewed through a microscope and could be seen to move almost instantaneously with changes in electromotive force of as little as .0001 volt. Lippmann published preliminary accounts of his experiments on electrocapillarity in 1874 and incorporated a full theoretical treatment into a Thèse he presented to the Paris Faculté des Sciences in April 1875 and printed in July" (Coleman, The Invesitative Enterprise). "The invention of the capillary electrometer in the early 1870s by Gabriel Lippmann led to the first recording of a human electrocardiogram by Augustus D. Waller" and "for more than two decades the capillary electrometer was the best method available to physiologists for recording the electrical activity of the of the heart" (Iaizzo, Handbook of Cardiac Anatomy; Fleming, A Short History of Cardiology). Relations entre les phénomènes électriques et capillaires. Thèses présentés a la faculté des sciences de Paris pour obtenir le grade de docteur ès sciences physiques, par M. Gabriel Lippmann. Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1875. Quarto, original wrappers; custom box. pp. 1-58. Small archival tape reinforcement on rear of front cover; tiny (almost invisible) repairs to extreme corner of first few leaves, library stamp and ink call numbers on cover and title. RARE. SCARCE FIRST PRINTING IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of Lippmann's famous "Thesis", presenting his capillary electrometer, the foundation for the electrocardiogram. [Attributes: First Edition]

Christian Martyrs Reign of Diocletian Rome A.D. 303

London: Dore Gallery, 1875. unbound. Print. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 24" x 32.25". This stunning scene is based on the celebrated painting by the famous French artist Paul Gustave Dore. This engraving, titled "Christian Martyrs, Reign of Diocletian Rome AD 303", depicts a gruesome scene in an amphitheater in Rome. Lions feast and prowl over the corpses of the martyrs, some still clutching crosses in their hands. The seats of the amphitheater are empty and in shadow. Above the martyrs, angels look down with tenderness and compassion, come to bear off the spirits of the martyrs. The print is in very good condition with minor cracks along margins. Mounted on linen. The print was engraved by Herbert Bourne and published by Fairless and Beeforth, Dore Gallery. Paul Gustav Dore was a French artist, printmaker and illustrator. He became one of the most famous illustrators of the 19th century with his detailed illustrations for the English Bible. His work also appeared in the Illustrated London News. This is a beautiful example of his work.

        The Bosporus and Istanbul.

[Istanbul], 1875. - Oil on wood. Signed and dated. Framed (455 x 258 mm). Museum-quality panoramic painting of Istanbul with steamships and sailboats on the Golden Horn and the Hagia Sophia in the background. The foreground is dominated by the Grand Vezier Hüseyin Avni Pasha in a coach, escorted by horsemen, surrounded by a crowd. - The Regensburg-born Heinrich Lang, noted painter of horses and battles as well as writer and illustrator, studied with Karl Steffek in Berlin, Friedrich Voltz and Franz Adam in Munich and Adolf Schreyer in Paris. He travelled to Greece and Turkey and proved himself a careful observer of Ottoman costume and culture. His colourful paintings of Turkish tradesmen, camel drivers, donkey-drawn wagons and splendidly decorated carriages show his great attention to detail and were greeted by contemporaries as a much-welcomed relief from the grey military scenes that had dominated the previous years (cf. ADB Ll, 551). [Attributes: Signed Copy]

1875 ANDREAS' ILLUSTRATED HISTORICAL ATLAS of the STATE of IOWA w/ 195 Pages of ENGRAVED MAPS & PLATES - Very Large Folio Atlas

Chicago: Lakeside Press, 1875. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fair. A.T. ANDREAS' ILLUSTRATED HISTORICAL ATLAS OF THE STATE OF IOWA 1875. Published by the Lakeside Press, Chicago, 1875. First Edition. Very Large Format Hardcover Book, Elephant Folio 14x18", blind-stamped cloth covered boards, 590 numbered pages (though the printer's pagination is faulty in many spots). Filled with Engraved Maps, City Views, and Other Engraved Illustrations. CONDITION: The covers and spine are in POOR condition. The covers are detached, the spine is completely worn off, there is masking tape on the spine and on the covers' spine margins; additionally, the boards are bowing and rubbed, scraped, and worn through at many places. Internally, there is a previous owner's name/address writ large on the front pastedown; the last 10 pages and the blank free endpaper are in poor condition, with many vertical stiff creases where the book was probably shut on them incorrectly, with the leaf consisting of pages 585/586 disbound and very worn, and with the last signature (last few pages and the rear free endpaper) disbound; the first few pages (the printed title page, frontispiece, and title page) are chipped and worn along their edges and have a significant piece cut from their bottom corner area; otherwise the inner pages and ALL the Maps and Engraved Plates are in generally GOOD to VERY GOOD condition, some have small closed edge tears and edge and corner chips, a couple have a significant closed tear, overall they are solid with sharp edges, and printing that is bright and clear. One of the nicer sets of these plates I have seen. Andreas Atlases are known for poor pagination (unnumbered and improperly numbered plates, sections with no numbers, etc.) This Iowa Atlas is no exception. The pagination shows a variety of missing pages in the Plates section, but I have collated every single plate with the Index and ALL but 4 of the plates called for are present, and my guess is that even the 4 presumably missing plates were never actually in this 1875 printing (though of course I could be wrong). The first Arabic numbered page is page 7 which begins the large section of plates and maps. There are NO pages 1-6, as issued (though there are pages i-viii). PAGINATION (with my added comments): [i] Printed Title Page (the bottom margin has ink pen doodling, the bottom corner area is clipped); [ii] Frontispiece Engraving of Davenport (it also has the clipped corner area); [iii] Illustrated Title Page; [iv] Index; v-vii Index; [viii] Preface; 7-28 (page 7 is the first numbered page after prelim page viii and is the start of the large Engraved Maps and Plates section); 31-68 (leaf consisting of pages 57/58 has a 5" closed tear starting at the bottom edge; page 49 has light brown staining to the bottom area); 71-84; 87-96 (leaf consisting of pages 89/90 with 4" closed tear starting at the bottom edge); 99-100; 103-108 (107/108 with 2" closed tear starting at gutter); 111-112 (2" closed tear starting at bottom edge); 115-118; 121-123 (there are two pages numbered 122); 128-129; 131-138; 141-162 (pages 152-162 have 1" closed tears at their bottom gutter corner); 165-174; 177-190; 193-196; 199-212; 215-218; 221-236; 241-250 (this is the END of the Plates and Maps section). 251-280 (Biographical Sketches); 283-312 (History of Iowa); [313-336] (Post Offices); 341-424 (County Histories); 431-482 (Census. There are 7 pages all numbered 482); 482-536 (Patrons); 541-558 (Statistics); [559-589] 590 (the last 10 pages are in poor condition, with a single page and the last signature disbound, as noted above); Rear Free Endpaper. An actual count of the pages in the Engraved Maps and Plates section (accounting for the very poor printer's pagination) shows a total of 195 PAGES OF ORIGINAL ENGRAVED MAPS AND PLATES, plus the frontispiece and the engraved title page. This ORIGINAL 1875 EDITION, FOLIO SIZE ATLAS of IOWA is SCARCE. INTERNATIONAL BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: This is a large, heavy book, that will require substantial additional shipping charges.

        L'AMOUR AU DIX-HUITIÈME SIÈCLE

Paris: E. Dentu, 1875. First Separate Edition n. Hardcover. 194 x 143 mm (7 5/8 x 5 5/8"). 2 p.l., 171, [1] pp. First Separate Edition. ELEGANT FIN-DE-SIÈCLE BROWN CRUSHED MOROCCO BY A. TAFFIN OF PARIS (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with ornate gilt frame of flowers, leaves, and small tools enclosing two inlaid salmon pink morocco bands separated by a gilt chain roll; raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with floral frame, gilt titling, turn-ins lavishly gilt, green silk endleaves, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed, original wrappers bound in. Text within full woodcut inhabited frames, engraved frontispiece, headpiece, and tailpiece, and EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with 19 engravings in black and white or bistre. Vicaire III, 1056. Spine mildly but uniformly sunned toward a chocolate brown, other trivial imperfections, but A VERY FINE COPY, the extremely pretty decorative binding lustrous and virtually unworn, and the text clean and fresh. This stylish, vaguely Art Nouveau binding adorns a very appealing, extra-illustrated copy of the finely printed and rare first separate edition of a section extracted from the Goncourt's popular and often reprinted, "La Femme au XVIIIe Siècle," which originally appeared in 1862. Only a "petit nombre" of copies were printed, each employing various papers--either Whatman, China, Velin, or Holland--for the text. The present copy is printed on Whatman paper and is wonderfully extra-illustrated with plates often gallant in nature and all from 18th century artists. We know little of our binder, Taffin, who eluded Beraldi and all of the other standard sources on bindings. In the early 20th century he appears to have partnered with Lefort, as we have seen bindings signed "Taffin-Lefort" from that period. Beyond that we can only admire the craft invested in this fashionable design. It may be that the relationship of our authors, the brothers Edmund and Jules Goncourt (1822-96, 1830-70), was unique in literary history. They authored all their books jointly, and they apparently spent every day of their adults lives together until Jules' death. Their books, whether fiction or non-fiction, intimately explored the literary and social life of France in their time. They are buried together within the same grave, inseparable through eternity. Their estate established the Académie Goncourt, which since 1903 has awarded the Prix Goncourt, arguably the most prestigious literary prize in French literature. This work is seldom seen in the marketplace, and virtually never with extra-illustrations.

        A Silent Witness.

London; Tinsley Brothers. 1875 - First editions. 3 Volumes, 8vo. Author's own copy. Bound in exceptionally smart contemporary royal blue half morocco over marbled boards by Zaehnsdorf, top edge gilt. Gilt titles and decorations to spines. An elegant and stylish bit of high-end late Victorian book binding. Very good indeed. Internally clean, minor spotting to page edges. Marbled endpapers, bearing the author's bookplate to front pastedowns. Now mostly forgotten, Yates was a contemporary and correspondant of Dickens who made a lucrative and popular living penning racy melodramatic murder mysteries, guarenteed in a contemporary review to have "A murder or two in volume one, bigamy in the second, a suicide in the third." Which, all in all, sounds like a nice break from Geordie Shore. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A good copy nonetheless, with the bookplates on front pastedown of R.C. Hyde and Max Salomon.> First edition. Sargent p.31. Negley 327. Not in Lewis [Utopian Literature in The Pennsylvania State University Libraries>]. 'An eutopia founded by a geometrician' [Lyman Tower Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature 1516-1975,> 1979, p.31]. An utopian novel of sorts, but not well regarded either then or now, set on an imaginary island in the North Sea. 'We shall speak quite plainly about the author of Etymonia>. He does not seem to possess any imagination or sagacity, or indeed, any ability, literary or other. How, then, does he try to interest his readers? By following Sir Robert Walpole's advice. The one talk, that cynical old man of the world was wont to say, in which all men can join, is indecent talk. And the author of Etymonia> treats his readers as Sir Robert used to treat his guests. A very great part of this book is discreditable to both author and publisher'. [The Spectator Archive>]. * Authorship not agreed. Sargent suggests Davis, others put it all down to the publisher himself.

London, 1875- 1887. - FIRST EDITIONS of 22 titles bound in 31 volumes. Attractive contemporary binding by Bradstreet's of deep red half morocco, marbled boards and end papers, top edges gilt. Bookplate to all volumes. Pages edges slightly age toned. A superb set. The set comprises all the books, fiction and non fiction, published during Jefferies' lifetime, as well as 2 titles posthumously published, Field and Hedgerow (1889) and The Toilers of the Fields (1892). John) Richard Jefferies (1848-1887) is best known for his prolific and sensitive writing on natural history, rural life and agriculture in late Victorian England. However, a closer examination of his career reveals a many-sided author who was something of an enigma. To some people he is more familiar as the author of the children's classic Bevis or the strange futuristic fantasy After London (the central theme of which is unstoppable nature reclaiming its birthright after the collapse of civilisation), while he also has some reputation as a mystic worthy of serious study. Since his death his books have enjoyed intermittent spells of popularity, but today he is unknown to the greater part of the reading public. Jefferies, however, has been an inspiration to a number of more prominent writers and W.H. Hudson, Edward Thomas, Henry Williamson and John Fowles are among those who have acknowledged their debt to him. In my view his greatest achievement lies in his expression, aesthetically and spiritually, of the human encounter with the natural world – something that became almost an obsession for him in his last years (Simon Coleman) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
