A CLASSIC WORK BY ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT AFRICAN EXPLORERS OF HIS TIME. The scarce and rarely found account of the Khedive of Egypt’s expedition, which Baker commanded, to suppress the slave trade in Central Africa. It was one of the first practical steps taken for the purpose. In his early exploits in Africa Baker had been an eyewitness to the horrors and misery caused by the trade. He was determined in his attempt to bring it to an end. Samuel Baker was prolific in his writing about Africa. His works on the basin of and search for the sources of the Nile are among the most important writings ever penned about the Dark Continent and he ranks with Burton, Speke and Grant in importance as an African explorer.         AVENTURAS DE FILIPINAS. ALBUM HUMORISTICO EN 30 HOJAS

[San Galo, 1874. Laid in a folio portfolio. Original maroon cloth, gilt pictorial cover. Portfolio dampstained. Minute foxing to plates; plates also with faint dust soiling, primarily to edges. Overall clean. Very good. In a cloth clamshell case, leather label. A comic illustrated tour of the Philippines, detailing remarkable and unanticipated adventures awaiting the unwary foreign traveller. Each amusing illustration is captioned in both English and Spanish, and all depict white adventurers suffering a variety of mishaps. These mishaps run a wide gamut, from attacks by wild caribou (a bull-like animal, not to be confused with the caribou of the northern wastes) and monkeys, to squalid accommodations and swindling natives. Though intended as a humorous work, the perilous and often life-threatening situations depicted illuminate the resentment the Filipino people (sometimes illustrated outright, but often represented by the landscape and native animals) felt towards their foreign visitors. The work is divided into three sections: "Aventures de los Cazadores" (Hunting Adventures), "Aventures y Diferentes Modos de Viajar" (Adventures and Different Modes of Travel), and "Aventuras Diferentes" (Different Adventures). Quite rare. OCLC locates only five copies. The imprint, "San Galo," is curious. An exhaustive search of place names reveals no San Galo in the Philippines, Mexico, or South America, though Palau sees fit to include it in his bibliography. There is a Saint Gallen bishopric in Switzerland, though this is an unlikely place of publication. It seems likely the imprint is a ruse, which is consistent with the satirical nature of the work. The same is possibly true of the author's name. In all, an amusing and rare illustrated view of the Philippines near the end of Spanish colonial rule.

Unsigned Watercolour View of Torquay, England, Titled on Verso:] Torquay from Livermead Sand, 20 October 1874.

1874 - 1874. Watercolour on paper ca. 22x32,5 cm (8 ½ x 12 ¾ in). Period ink caption on verso. A very good watercolour, mounted in a recent mat. Large attractive watercolour by an unknown artist, showing the Torquay harbour and city from the grounds of the Livermead House hotel. The view depicts picturesque houses and cliffs, several ships in the harbour, with a fishing boat and a peasant with his horse in the foreground. In the early 19th century "the town began to develop into a fashionable seaside resort, initially frequented by members of the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars while the Royal Navy anchored in the bay. Later, as the town's fame spread, it was popular with the crème de la crème of Victorian society. Renowned for its healthful climate, the town earned the nickname of the English Riviera and favourable comparisons to Montpellier. Torquay was the home of the writer Agatha Christie, who was born in the town and lived there during her early years" (Wikipedia).

        Les diaboliques

      E. Dentu 1874 - - E. Dentu, Paris 1874, 12x18,5cm, (1f. faux-titre) (2 f. front.) (1f. titre) (1f.) [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Edition of wich no leading copies exists. Bound in red half morocco with corners, back with five nerves set with black nets, golden tail date marbled paper plates, guards and contreplats of handmade paper, preserved covers, gilded head, very slightly later signed binding of P. Ribbon. Bel bookplate engraved by Provost-Blondes and pasted on a contreplat. It represents a helmet adorned with a feather, a medallion and a scroll with the motto "Always in front". It was for Victor Coue, lieutenant killed in action during World War II. This copy is enriched with two headpieces; a hand colored lithograph portrait representing Félicien Rops charge Barbey d'Aurevilly and captioned "He did his shadow page for TS."; and a portrait of the author engraved by Paul Rajon Adolphus (1843-1888). Our copy is further enriched by the eponymous series of etchings made by Félicien Rops between 1882 and 1886 for a new edition from Alphonse Lemerre. The meeting of these two major works of literature and art history from the late nineteenth century is an exceptional and unique copy, as opposed to the general idea, prints Rops have never officially together Barbey the text as part of a real illustrated edition. Beautiful copy very well established in almost bound of the time. (1f. faux-titre) (2 f. front.) (1f. titre) (1f.) (2f. préface) pp. 8 à 354 (1f. tab). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

HISTORY OF THE INDIAN TRIBES OF NORTH AMERICA, WITH BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES AND ANECDOTES OF THE PRINCIPAL CHIEFS

Philadelphia, 1874. Expertly bound to style in uniform navy half morocco over the original blue cloth covered, richly gilt spines divided into five compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and fourth, the others with repeat decorative motif built up from small tools, marbled endpapers, a.e.g. Very good. The last folio edition of one of the most important 19th- century works on the American Indian, and one of the most important color plate books produced in America in the age of lithography. The first folio edition was issued by E.C. Biddle from 1836 to 1844, and reissued by F.W. Greenough and Daniel Rice. The number of different printers and lithographers involved in the project speaks to the complicated production of the most elaborate plate book published in the United States up to that time. The present final edition of McKenney and Hall was issued by the firm of D. Rice, whose father took over the initial project as publisher in the early 1840s. This edition differs from the original folio edition in significant ways. Most importantly, a plate is added, the portrait of Seminole chief Billy Bowlegs which appears as a frontispiece in the second text volume, making this the most complete form of the work. Secondly, the text is present in two separate octavo volumes, thus eliminating the problem of offsetting which plagues the original edition. Thirdly, thirty-nine of the folio plates have been reprinted, using the same lithographic stones, but eliminating the printer's credit lines which appear on earlier issues of the plates, and providing new captions with the names of the Indians only. These plates are printed on superior paper stock and are particularly brilliantly colored. The other eighty-one folio plates are from the earlier issues, evidently using print stock the Rice firm had on hand. Fourthly, this edition omits the map, table, and facsimile signatures of subscribers which appeared in the original edition, and also removes James Hall's name from the titlepage, only crediting McKenney. McKenney and Hall's ...INDIAN TRIBES OF NORTH AMERICA... has long been renowned for its faithful portraits of American Indians. The portrait plates are based on paintings by artist Charles Bird King, who was employed by the War Department to paint the Indian delegates visiting Washington, D.C., forming the basis of the War Department's Indian Gallery. Most of King's original paintings were subsequently destroyed in a fire at the Smithsonian, and their appearance in McKenney and Hall's magnificent work is thus our only record of the likenesses of many of the most prominent Indian leaders of the 19th century. Numbered among King's sitters were Sequoyah, Red Jacket, Major Ridge, Cornplanter, and Osceola. After six years as superintendent of Indian Trade, Thomas McKenney had become concerned for the survival of the western tribes. He had observed unscrupulous individuals taking advantage of the American Indians for profit, and his vocal warnings about their future prompted his appointment by President Monroe to the Office of Indian Affairs. As first director, McKenney was to improve the administration of Indian programs in various government offices. His first trip was during the summer of 1826 to the Lake Superior area for a treaty with the Chippewa, opening mineral rights on their land. In 1827 he journeyed west again for a treaty with the Chippewa, Menominee, and Winnebago in the present state of Michigan. His journeys provided an unparalleled opportunity to become acquainted with Indian tribes. When President Jackson dismissed him from his government post in 1839, McKenney was able to turn more of his attention to his publishing project. Within a few years he was joined by James Hall, a lawyer who had written extensively about the West. Both authors, not unlike George Catlin, whom they tried to enlist in their publishing enterprise, saw their book as a way of preserving an accurate visual record of a rapidly disappearing culture. McKenney provided the biographies, many based on personal interviews, and Hall wrote the general history of the North American Indian.

        Heresie d'Arius". Autograph manuscript.

      N. p. o. d. - Small folio. 2 pp. Comprehensive transcript of remarks to the central character in Flaubert's "La Tentation de Saint-Antoine" which had appeared in 1874 after twenty years in which Flaubert had dealed with the subject. The detailed notes are relating to the dispute between Arius and Alexander, Bishop of Alexandria, the subsequent exile of Arius and finally his condemnation as a heretic by Emperor Constantine; for instance, Flaubert reflects on there a sons for Arius to beconsidered a heretic: "Hérésie d'Arius. THE GRIZZLY GIANT

[Mariposa, Northern California, 1874. Signed, inscribed, and dated across lower image: "The Grizzly Giant. Mariposa / WM Simpson / 1874." Perfectly preserved original condition, rich coloration. Framed and matted. A beautiful watercolor of three men on horseback admiring a towering redwood, the lower formation of bearing a startling resemblance to a grizzly bear, in the Mariposa Grove of northern California, painted by the well known war correspondent and graphic artist, William Simpson. The great tree still stands. Simpson won fame in England in the 1850s for his bold coverage of the Crimean War, and his production of a lavish color plate book, THE SEAT OF THE WAR IN THE EAST, commemorating the ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS. He arrived in San Francisco in April 1873, just as the war against the Modoc Indians was coming to a climax. Good correspondent that he was, Simpson headed for the battlefield, the Lava Beds near Mount Shasta on the California-Oregon line, and observed the demise of the Modocs. All of this, as well as further travels in Yosemite (with Bierstadt), San Francisco, and Japan, he describes in detail in his book, MEETING THE SUN (London, 1877). This handsome watercolor is the only known California image by Simpson presently available in the American art market. A number of his California watercolors are in the permanent collection of the Bancroft Library, with other pieces located at the Peabody Museum (Harvard) and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Bern, 18. April o. J. - ¾ S. Kl.-4to. März 1916. 1 S.       Berlin: Verlag von Julius Springer, 1874 2 volumes. xiii+154 pages with diagrams (some in color) and charts; xvi+526 pages with frontispiece portrait, diagrams and index. Small quarto (10 1/4" x 7 1/2") bound in original publisher green cloth with gilt lettering to spine and stamped black decorative design to covers. (Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 26) First edition.Tassilo, Baron von Heydebrand und der Lasa (known in English as "Baron von der Lasa" was an important German chess master, chess historian and theoretician of the nineteenth century, a member of the Berlin Chess Club and a founder of the Berlin Chess School (the Berlin Pleiades). His name is usually abbreviated as "von der Lasa", as this is how he signed his letters. However both contemporary and more recent writers have used other abbreviations, such as "von Heydebrandt" (which is a miss-spelling) and "Der Lasa". The Prussian King (later Emperor) William I made a joke out of the confusion by saying, "Good morning, dear Heydebrand. How is von der Lasa doing?" Von der Lasa was born 17 October 1818 in Berlin. He studied law in Bonn and Berlin. From 1845 he was a diplomat in the service of Prussia. His career took him to Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Rio de Janeiro, among other places. He retired from the diplomatic service in 1864, and thereafter devoted himself to the world of chess. He played several matches and defeated the strongest masters in the period 1843-1853. He won against Henry Thomas Buckle 2-1 (1843), Adolf Anderssen 4-2 (1845), Johann Löwenthal 6-1 (1846), John Schulten 4-1 (1850), Anderssen 10-5 (1851), and Howard Staunton 7-6 (1853). To the modern chess world he is known above all as the main author of the Handbuch des Schachspiels (first published in 1843). His friend Paul Rudolf von Bilguer, responsible for the original plan, had died in 1840, with the work still in the early stages. Von der Lasa took over, and, in a noble gesture of friendship, put his friend's name as author. In later editions of the Handbuch, in German commonly called der Bilguer, von der Lasa was named as co-author. In 1850 von der Lasa published in the Deutsche Schachzeitung (German Chess Magazine) a call for an international chess tournament, the first ever, to be held in Trier. Instead the first such tournament was held in 1851 in London. Von der Lasa did not play in tournaments, being usually busy as an organizer, but played well in off-hand games against such leading masters as Howard Staunton and Adolf Anderssen. He was also a renowned chess investigator and theoretician, publishing numerous articles in the German Chess Magazine and, in 1897, his great work Zur Geschichte und Literatur des Schachspiels, Forschungen (Researches in the History and Literature of Chess). In the course of his researches he traveled extensively (including a trip around the world in 1887-88) and accumulated a comprehensive chess library, to which he published a catalog in 1896. In 1898 the German Chess Federation saluted his tireless efforts and accomplishments by conferring on him its first honorary membership. One of von der Lasa's last services was to encourage H J R Murray to pursue further researches into the early history of chess. Von der Lasa died on 27 July 1899 in Storchnest bei Lissa, now in western Poland. His library is still intact at Kórnik Castle near Poznañ.Condition:Corners gently bumped, some foxing repair to spine ends else a very nice set.

Paris: Gauthier-Villars. SCARCE FIRST PRINTING IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of Lippmann's famous "Thesis", presenting his capillary electrometer, the foundation for the electrocardiogram. Very Good. SCARCE FIRST PRINTING IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of Lippmann's famous "Thesis", presenting his capillary electrometer, the foundation for the electrocardiogram. The capillary electrometer "was an apparatus that used a new physical principle to measure electrical potential and is changes? The concept behind the instrument was really quite simple and elegant and had been worked out in Kirchoff's laboratory in Heidelberg by a young Parisian physicist, Gabriel Lippmann. Lippmann found that the surface tension of a liquid such as mercury, when covered with another electrolyte such as dilute sulfuric acid, was dependent in a complex way upon the potential difference across the phase boundary. Change the voltage by even a minuscule amount and one changed the surface tension, and hence the shape of the meniscus: it moved up and down. Converting this principle into an instrument was equally simple. One took a glass tube perhaps one-quarter inch across, pulled out one end into a capillary, filled it with mercury, inverted the capillary end into a bath of dilute sulfuric acid, and applied a potential across the mercury/sulfuric boundary. The tiny meniscus, no more than one-fiftieth of a millimeter across, could be viewed through a microscope and could be seen to move almost instantaneously with changes in electromotive force of as little as .0001 volt. Lippmann published preliminary accounts of his experiments on electrocapillarity in 1874 and incorporated a full theoretical treatment into a Thèse he presented to the Paris Faculté des Sciences in April 1875 and printed in July" (Coleman, The Invesitative Enterprise)."The invention of the capillary electrometer in the early 1870s by Gabriel Lippmann led to the first recording of a human electrocardiogram by Augustus D. Waller" and "for more than two decades the capillary electrometer was the best method available to physiologists for recording the electrical activity of the of the heart" (Iaizzo, Handbook of Cardiac Anatomy; Fleming, A Short History of Cardiology).Relations entre les phénomènes électriques et capillaires. Vitta, Diritto int. privato, p. 345. Ballarino, Dir. Int. privato, p. 31. Nishitani, Mancini e l'autonomia. in Riv. dir. Intern. priv. 2001, p. 23 ss. ITA
