Lombard Street: A Description of the Money Market

BAGEHOT,Walter. Lombard Street: A Description of the Money Market. London, S.King & Co 1873Octavo, 7.6 x 6.3 inches, original publishers brown cloth, lettered gilt and blind ruled in black, spine lettered gilt, pp.viii + 359 + [32] adverts, head of spine a little worn, original dark blue endpapers, contemporary ownership in ink on half title of H L Richmond, Meadville, Pa, a very good copy. First edition, infrequent and uncommon on the market. A vivid description of the money market that seamlessly brings together theoretical analyses, historical anecdotes, and incisive commentary on sociology, politics, and the Street's various personalities. Sharing his invaluable insights and unique observations, Bagehot touches on everything from the mechanics of deposit banking within a fractional reserve system to the nature of foreign deposits in Britain. Along with a clear explanation of why economic growth and rising living standards are dependent upon a well-managed financial system, he offers straightforward guidelines for the function of lender-of-last resort; a penetrating look at the consequences of uncontrolled credit and speculation; and an in-depth examination of the exchequer in the money market that includes a stimulating analysis of the interaction between the government's fiscal operations and the functioning of the Bank of England, the commercial banks, and the money market. Perhaps most importantly, Lombard Street features Bagehot's prescription for crisis management, which after nearly 150 years, remains the formula of choice for containing and curtailing financial crises.Filled with descriptions of Lombard Street that still ring true today, this jewel of a book has withstood the test of time to become a true investment classic, one that will appeal as much to the readers of today as it did to those of years ago."In language as fresh and clear today as it was over 100 years ago, he respectfully dissected the Bank of England's foundations, economic incentives, goals, and functions. In the process, he illuminated in a mere few hundred brilliant pages what distinguishes a Central Bank from a commercial bank, both on a daily basis and during crises such as bank panics and recessions. Bagehot's book was so readable and so remarkable that it was re-issued three times within a year, and was republished in many editions both during his lifetime and afterwards." Philosophie naturelle.

Montpellier, Coulet, Paris, Delahaye, 1873. ____ Première édition. "Sabatier's book on the heart and circulation in vertebrates (1873) immediately established his reputation as an anatomist. He made a detailed investigation of the cardiac morphology and physiology of amphibians and reptiles and from this research established the general laws that govern the functional evolution of the heart from fishes to mammals. He showed that these laws apply not only to the zoogical series but also to the developing embryo. (...). This work resolved several lengthy debates, including that on the significance in man of the coracoid process. He demonstrated that this structure is analogous to the pubis of the pelvic girdle".         CHIROMAGICA

1873. MCLOUGHLIN. GAME. CHIROMAGICA. NY: McLoughlin Bros. no date, circa 1873 (not later than 1877). This is a wonderful children's magnetic educational and divination game housed in the original 12 x 12x 2" mahogany box with a sliding wooden lid. The lid has a fanciful chromolithograph depicting a sorcerer standing within an alcove of books with a globe at his feet. In his extended hand is a wand pointing to a solar wheel. The box is in fine condition. Within the box, a hand appears to be free-floating beneath an instruction disc that is 4 1/2" in diameter. This disc is affixed to the center of a piece of glass that covers the upper surface of the box. DIRECTIONS ON THE DISC: "In asking a question, place the Question Card so that it will fit exactly over this disc, placing the question asked at the top, so that the dot on the edge will be directly opposite the dot on the top of this disc, when the hand will immediately move in a quizzical manner, and in a few moments stop, and give the correct answer." The game includes 3 small, 4" double sided circular chromolithographed question discs, each with 32 questions (16 per side) in fine condition. There are 3 pictorial framed answer sheets with circular cut outs. Each sheet has 32 circles with answers to the questions. Each of these sheets is wonderfully illustrated with vignettes and each sheet is to be used with its corresponding question disc. Two clean edge mends else fine. By the clever use of magnets, when the player places the question disc with the question he wants answered at the top, the hand immediately begins to move, eventually stopping to point to the correct answer in the outer ring. (Question - "Who cut the Gordian knot?" - Ans. "Alexander the Great"). A superb example of the best that McLoughlin Brothers had to offer American children.

Le Jardin des Plantes. Compositions et dessins par A. Adam. Texte par Jules Rostaing.

Paris: Ducrocq, probably 1873. Oblong folio, 24 colour-printed plates and 41 pp. text; some browning of the paper as common for books of this era, but very good in the original red boards embossed in gilt, bumped and a little worn at edges. A lovely edition of this work, designed as a series of three "promenades" through the Jardin des Plantes in Paris.Although it is of interest for many of the exotic animals on public show (including kangaroos and a platypus), the real significance of the work is the series of views by Adam that show the wider public touring the zoo and which provide an insight into the conditions at what had become, by this date, an important menagerie. Jules Rostaing (born 1824) was a well-known writer on all manner of natural history books, and this charming work is his study of the Jardin des Plantes at mid-nineteenth century. A copy of this work in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France has been given a date of 1873, which would certainly accord with the style of the book and the known period that the publisher Ducrocq was in business.

      T. Pettit & Co. 1873 A few small tears & creases to fore-edges with sl. loss to lower corner of first 2 leaves. Orig. light bown printed paper wrappers, sewn as issued; sl. dusted with some sl. wear to head & tail of spine, corners sl. creased. 12pp.5 copies only on Copac. Miller & Matthews B3.1. The first edition of Jefferies' first separately published work of fiction. A satire directed at the 'chief of capitalists'; a guide on how to use capital to become an Emperor of England. It is described by Edward Thomas as 'a jaunty, humourously intended by-product of his Conservatism'. 'This Squib' write Miller and Matthews, 'is another in Jefferies' series of short works published at his own expense in the hope of a chance bestseller drawing attention to his name, but at a risk of relatively small capital outlay'. Jefferies had asked Macmillan to put their name to it but had to settle for the lesser-known imprint of T. Pettitt & Co.

Philosophie naturelle.

Montpellier, Coulet, Paris, Delahaye, 1873. A. Sabatier". ***** Firs edition. Inscribed to Charles-Frédéric Martins. DSB 12, 45. In-4. [272 x 215 mm] Collation : (2), X, 462 pp., 16 planches hors-texte.

Lisbon: Imprensa Lusitana Typographia Lisbonense, 1872-, 1873. Thick octavo, 153 highly-finished handcoloured engravings;red blind-panelled morocco, all edges gilt. (Brussels, 1844), published well after Wahlen's death in 1850. Wahlen's is a scarce and beautiful work on the costumes of the world, finely illustrated with a wonderful series of highly coloured full-page plates. This Portuguese edition is not recorded by Ferguson, although there are 30 plates of Oceania; it includes the Aborigines of Jervis Bay and Kangaroo Island, and the exotic peoples of Pitcairn Island, New Guinea, Timor, Java, New Zealand and Hawaii. As with the earlier Brussels edition, the plates are drawn from published voyage accounts. The startling portraits of the Aborigines of Jervis Bay and Kangaroo Island are copied from De Sainson's studies made on Dumont D'Urville's voyage on the Astrolabe. Other images come from Krusenstern, while the Tahitian dancer is after John Webber from the account of Cook's third voyage. Portrait profiles of Maoris are based on Sydney Parkinson's images published in the official account of Cook's first voyage, and a native of New Guinea is adapted from P. Van Oort's "Native of Dourga Strait, New Guinea", which appeared as the frontispiece to Earl's The Native Races of the Indian Archipelago. This is a volume of plates only, evidently part of a larger work (it is numbered volume 6 on the spine). The National Library's copy has two volumes. A little rubbed, original interleaves generally present, a couple of plates spotted, but generally fine and bright.n.

The Flowering Plants, Grasses, Sedges, and Ferns of Great Britain and Their Allies the Club Mosses, Pepperworts, and Horsetails. London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1855?1873, 6 vols. (Originally only 5 volumes, published 1855?1866, as 'The Flowering Plants of Great Britain; the 6th volume, on grasses, sedges, and ferns, was added in 1873).nnAnne Pratt (5 December 1806 ? 1893) was a botanical and ornithological illustrator from Strood, Kent. The second of three daughters of Robert Pratt (1777?1819), a grocer, and Sara Bundock (1780?1845), Pratt was one of the best known English botanical illustrators of the Victorian age. Owing to poor health and a 'stiff knee' in childhood, she missed out on 'outdoor activities' and was encouraged to occupy herself by drawing. Anne Pratt was educated at Eastgate House, Rochester, and introduced to botany by Dr. Dods, a family friend. She moved to Brixton, London, in 1826, where she developed her career as an illustrator. She settled in Dover in 1849, then in East Grinstead in 1866, where she married John Pearless; they then moved to Redhill. Anne Pratt died in Shepherd's Bush, London.nnAnne Pratt wrote more than 20 books, which she illustrated with chromolithographs on which she collaborated with William Dickes, an engraver skilled in the chromolithograph process. Her works were written in popular style but were said to be accurate, and are partly responsible for the popularising of botany in her day. From her first book, Flowers and Their Associations, her work sold well, but she never achieved critical acclaim, owing to prejudice against her on the grounds that she was self-taught. Her masterpiece is probably The Flowering Plants, Grasses, Sedges, and Ferns of Great Britain and Their Allies the Club Mosses, Pepperworts, and Horsetails, a six-volume project covering more than 1500 species, with 300 illustrations, that took over a decade to publish in full (1855?1873).
