LA MACHINE ANIMALE :; LOCOMOTION TERRESTRE ET AÉRIENNE

Librairie Germer Baillière, Paris 1873 - 8vo., x, 299, 48 pp., 117 figures in text. An occasional spot of foxing and mild toning. Publisher's deep cranberry/plum colored cloth, decorated and titled in gilt on the upper board with emblem in gilt on the rear board, rebacked in complimentary cordovan morocco with title label in gilt. A later owner's name is neatly stamped on the recto of the front free endpaper. Signed and presented, "Monsieur Le professeur Gavaret, hommage affection, E. Marey." A very good copy. Marey's interest in the biomechanics of locomotion was codified and measured through the use of his ingenious mechanisms, both mechanical and photographic, which are detailed in this volume. The practical implications of these studies had profound affects on aviation, biophysics, and the advent of cinematography. Chapter four deals with the paces of the horse and explains Marey's methods of research. It was one of Marey's published attitudes of the horse which led Gov. Leland Stanford of California to commission Muybridge to do his epoch-making work of the movement of the horse. Marey has presented this volume to Louis Denis Jules Gavarret (1794 - 1894) a French physician and proponent of statistical analysis, and pioneer in the field of biophysics. It was Professor Gavarret who was the principal examiner for Marey's defense of his thesis for his medical doctorate, "Research on Blood Circulation in the Physiological State and in Diseases." Roosens and Salu No. 6823. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

ROUND THE MOON (THE JULES VERNE LIBRARY)

WARD LOCK AND TYLER, LONDON - [1873] This is a scarce extremely early edition of Jules Verne's classic story dating from 1873, the same year as the English first edition. Although the book is not dated, bibliographic notes show that Ward Lock and Tyler existed between 1865 and 1873. Meanwhile, it is also noted by bibliographers that the first edition of Round The Moon was first printed in English in 1873. This makes this book an extremely early edition, since it can only have been printed in the first year of the book's publication in English. Furthermore, the list of Verne's stories to the rear of the book shows this volume as number 12 of 12. This is not a later printing. The book has classic Victorian paper wrap designs, depicting a bullet-like capsule flying to the moon, with green, black and red adornment. There is a colour frontispiece showing the capsule flying skyward, and a later plate titled "a narrow escape" showing splashdown. The boards are rubbed with some chipping. The spine has been replaced with yellow card. This is a genuine rarity in a tight clean condition. Extremely scarce. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

A superb draftsman, with a gift for portraiture, Ross's work has an ingratiating quality of lively elegance; his originals very seldom come on the market.

2 large quarto text volumes (335 x 246 mm) and one folio atlas, 2 volumes in one (490 x 360 mm). Contemporary red French quarter morocco, spines lettered and decorated in gilt, flat bands, red morocco-grain cloth sides concentrically panel-stamped in blind, all edges gilt in text volumes, top edge gilt and others untrimmed in atlas volume, white moiré endpapers. Text volumes: 44 full-page engravings, as plates and in the text, including frontispiece to vol. 1, 10 full-page coloured maps and plans, wood-engraved vignettes throughout. Atlas volume: 2 double-page coloured area maps (one folding), 10 coloured route maps, 11 engraved plates of which 2 double-page, 27 single-tint lithographic plates, one containing 2 discrete images, 6 double-page of which 4 containing 2 images and one containing 3, 11 chromolithographic plates; title pages printed in red & black. Cloth sides of atlas and corners of text volumes skilfully refurbished, old pale dampstain to margins one plate (not affecting image), customary scattered foxing, otherwise a very good set. First edition of the superbly illustrated official account of the most important 19th-century expedition into Indo-China. Cordier records a print run of 800 copies, although there has been more recent speculation that the edition may not have exceeded 300. Following the death of the commander, Captain Ernest Doudard de Lagrée, Garnier was forced to take command of this French government sponsored expedition to explore the navigability of the Mekong. After a voyage of nearly 5,500 miles they had successfully mapped over 3,600 miles of previously unrecorded terrain, represented here by the excellent maps based on Garnier's own notes and surveys. But probably one of the enduring achievements of the expedition was the superb suite of plates produced by Lieutenant Louis Delaporte. On the frequent occasions when the party was forced to travel over land, the river having become impassable, Delaporte took advantage of the interruptions to sketch the costumes and customs of the indigenous peoples, and the local flora and fauna. However, it is in the remarkable images that he produced of Angkor Wat that Delaporte's lasting legacy lies. His portrayal of the temple complex, "the Buddhist Notre Dame.. more like a living fairy tale" as he described it, etched it into the Western consciousness and no doubt contributed much to its survival. In the 1970s the remnant of the deposed Khmer Rouge army took shelter there in the knowledge that Western opinion would not allow an attack that would threaten the site. "Garnier dedicated his life to the extension of the French political and commercial presence in Indochina and China. Between 1860... and his death in 1873 (concluding the assualt on the citadel of Hanoi), Garnier spent most of his time in the Far East. He is remembered today not as a colonial administrator but as the explorer of the Mekong River. Garnier managed to convince Napoleon III that France, already occupying the mouth of the Mekong, had to take advantage of this controlling position to develop trade with China (particularly with the province of Yunnan, a target of British and French imperialism) and to use this waterway to extend French colonization north of the new protectorate of Cambodia. Before Garnier's expedition, no European had ever travelled up the Mekong north of Vientiane (Viang-chan), in Laos. The full course and the source of the river were unknown, The expedition party would soon become aware that the river could not be used as a waterway for trade (because of its many rapids and seasonal water-level changes), but, two years after its departure from Saigon, the mission would come back with a map of the entire Mekong basin and with a wealth of information on the economic activities, cultures languages, and customs of the people living by the riverside and in tributary valleys. In remains, in scope and achievement, one of the most important expeditions conducted in the nineteenth century" (Speake). Garnier's magnum opus is rarely found complete - only three copies have appeared at public auction since 1999 - and this set is attractively presented in what may well be the publisher's deluxe binding.

1873. Signed ("Gordon Ross"), lower left. 1 vols. 13 x 8-1/2 inches. Unframed, on board. Signed ("Gordon Ross"), lower left. 1 vols. 13 x 8-1/2 inches. Original Drawing by Gordon Ross. Gordon Ross (1873-1946) was a prolific artist, working mostly in watercolor, from his early days in his native Scotland. As a book artist he tackled everything from Dickens to Shakespeare, including a number of titles for The Limited Editions Club. He is also noted for his sporting work, which included illustrations for The Derrydale Press, Surtees's Jorrocks Jaunts and Jolities, and several large prints of notable sportsmen, including Sir Thomas Lipton, Hugo Meynell, Peter Beckford, and Surtees himself. The eminent collector A. Edward Newton, who wrote the introduction to the Surtees edition, praised Ross in his book End Papers: "No one now living in Great Britain and doing work in his line can compare with Gordon Ross, now living in New York...He has no living superior; I doubt if he has his equal for the very quality needed to illustrate a humorous classic."         zahn [Binding, Fine- Otto Zahn at the Toof Bindery] Poems

Basil Montagu Pickering, London 1873 - Attractively bound by Otto Zahn at S.C. Toof & Co., featuring Zahn's signature "mirror finish," an unusually smooth finish over the fine morocco leather. Full light green crushed morocc, raised bands, gilt dentelles. Both covers with innovative art nouveau design of arching vines, leaves, and flowers. Limited to 500 copies, but suppressed by the author, with most of the copies being destroyed (McKay). 126 pp. 8vo. Floral endpapers and laid in note from one of the original buyers to the recipient of the volume. With a fascinating two-page ALS laid in, by the presenter of this volume to the owner describing Zahn and his bindery: "May 11, 1899, My dear Mr. Babcock: You may remember that last Sunday I spoke to you of a bookbinder in Memphis named Zahn. I have happened to find a sample of his work and shall be glad if you will let me present it to you- and for calling attention especially to this binding. I do not mean to depreciate the poems, which are pleasing enough- Very Sincerely, Wilhelm Maydens. Samuel W. Babcock, Esq." Not much is known about Otto Zahn, though he is now considered one of the finest bookbinders in American early 20th Century bookbinding. Zahn arrived in this country in 1883 and settled in Memphis, TN, where he found employment at S. C. Toof and Co., which had an accomplished bookbinding presence. Zahn soon became a leading bookbinder, opening his own shop, The Zahn Bindery in Memphis. His bindings are finely crafted with a highly accomplished mechanics and attractive, intricate tooling. One feature of his bindings is that the books could invariably be placed on their spines and opened expansively without weakening the hinges or the spine. All edges gilt. Sunning to spine and around the edges of the covers (more sunning on back cover than front). Zahn bindings are scarce [Attributes: First Edition]

LA MACHINE ANIMALE :; LOCOMOTION TERRESTRE ET AÉRIENNE

Paris: Librairie Germer Baillière, 1873. First edition. 8vo., x, 299, 48 pp., 117 figures in text. It was Professor Gavarret who was the principal examiner for Marey's defense of his thesis for his medical doctorate, "Research on Blood Circulation in the Physiological State and in Diseases."
