O zasadzie uzytecznósci (Utilitarianizm). Przeklad z angielskiego upowazniony przez autora.

Warsaw: Przeglad Tygodniowy,, 1873. Duodecimo (137 x 100 mm), pp. 132. Bound with 3 other works in contemporary roan-backed pebbled cloth, spine ruled and lettered in black. Ownership initials M. D. stamped at foot of spine. Last 2 leaves bound in twice; a very good copy. First edition in Polish of Mill's Utilitarianism (first, 1863), his important "definition of Utilitarianism, and a defence of the philosophy expressed by it …" (MacMinn et al.) The translator was the positivist philosopher, publicist, and jurist Feliks Bogacki (1847-1916). "Western liberals – particularly English liberals – were extolled by many in Warsaw in the late 1860s and 1870s, but when their work was translated, it was repositioned within a specifically Polish debate … Adam Wislicki, the editor and publisher of the positivist's organ, The Weekly Review, (Przeglad tygodniowy), hoped to shift attention away from 'high politics' (the 'abstract' problems of international diplomacy or the conflicts of ruling elites) and towards 'little politics' (the newest methods of raising sheep, spreading literacy, financing higher education, and building railroads)'" (Brian A. Porter, The Social Nation and its Futures: English Liberalism and Polish Nationalism in Late Nineteenth-Century Warsaw, in: The American Historical Review, vol. 101, No. 5, December, 1995, p. 1470-77). Mill himself had been following closely the events in Poland of the 1860s, as his Letter on Poland, published in the Penny Newsman for March 15, 1863 proves. It is "a discussion of the insurrectionary movement in Poland which, Mill maintains, is designed to return the lands to the peasants; [it] is popular in origin; and is, because it is a revolution, indicative of the commencement of a new era in the downtrodden countries of Europe" (MacMinn, Hainds & McCrimmon, p. 94). As stated on the title of Utilitarianism, this Polish edition was authorized by Mill.

        Nos poires.

      - Gentbrugge, Établissement Horticulture de Louis Van Houtte, [N.D. but 1873]. Oblong folio (35.5 x 26.7 cm). 32 pp., 22 plates, numbered A-V; of which 16 (numbered A-C, J-V) in fine chromolithography, finished by hand, and tissue-guarded. Original blind-tooled cloth, with gilt title on the front board. Floral-patterned endpapers.l An extremely rare and fine monograph on Belgian pears (the title plainly meaning "Our pears"), describing no less than 431 different types of pears, including 234 different specimens of pears illustrated on 22 full colour plates, and six black and white (outline) plates, each with six images. The author was Louis Benoît Van Houtte (1810-1876). "If the nineteenth century Ghent florists had an icon, it was undoubtedly Louis Van Houtte. He traded a job at the Ministry of Finance for that of a botanist and florist. He opened a shop in Brussels, went on botanical expedition to the Brazilian jungle, was briefly director of the Brussels Botanical Garden and finally settled in Gentbrugge, where he specialized in ornamental horticulture. He was the first to bring to Europe the famous giant water lily, Victoria regina, for which he built a special greenhouse which attracted many visitors. Van Houtte was also politically active, and from 1854 until his death he was mayor of Gentbrugge. As a liberal, he also devoted much attention to the establishment of the municipal education and had built two schools. His legacy includes the famous magazine, 'L'Horticulture Belge' and the 23 volumes of the 'Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe' published between 1845 and 1883" (after B. D'Hondt, 2014). This fine pear-publication, however, is little known and must be very rare. It includes images of pear types now long forgotten, but also some pears that are still commercially successful. Some light shelfwear, spine foot frayed, private owner's stamp of P. Fenterer van Vlissingen, and earlier autograph (partly erased) in the title page top margin, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Very rare. OCLC reports only two copies, both in European libraries. Not in Nissen BBI, Raphael (An Oak Spring Pomona), or Stafleu & Cowan. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

I, the rest at end of volumes), half-titles, errata slip to vol. I, numerous diagrams and illustrations in text, 15 pp. of publisher's advertisements at rear of vol. II. Original publisher's blind-stamped plum cloth, spines lettered in gilt, glazed endpapers (spine ends little frayed, boards rubbed and spotted, corners bumped and worn, spines slightly faded, end-papers partly cracked at inner hinges, binding a bit weak but holding firm). Pages untrimmed and partly unopened. Text only little age-toned, otherwise crisp and clean. Provenance: W. van Bemmelen, Leiden (small ink stamps to top of half-titles and page [v] of vol. II), bookseller's ticket on front pastedowns. A fine copy internally in untouched original binding. ----Horblit 72; Norman 1466; PMM 355 (note); DSB IX, p.198ff; Wheeler-Gift 1872. - FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE OF A MAJOR SCIENTIFIC WORK with 'just published' in the listing for this title on page 10 of the publisher's advertisements at the rear of volume two. Maxwell saw electricity not as just another branch of physics but 'as an aid to the interpretation of nature' and saw the study of electromagnetism 'as a means of promoting the progress of science' (Preface p.vii). He demonstrated the importance of electricity to physics as a whole, advancing "the significant hypothesis that light and electricity are the same in their ultimate nature" (Grolier/Horblit). This theory, one of the most important discoveries of nineteenth-century physics, was Maxwell's greatest achievement, and laid the groundwork for Einstein's theory of relativity. "Maxwell once remarked that the aim of his Treatise was not to expound the final view of his electromagnetic theory, which he had developed in a series of five major papers between 1855 and 1868; rather, it was to educate himself by presenting a view of the stage he had reached in his thinking. Accordingly, the work is loosely organized on historical and experimental, rather than systematically deductive, lines. It extended Maxwell's ideas beyond the scope of his earlier work in many directions, producing a highly fecund (if somewhat confusing) demonstration of the special importance of electricity to physics as a whole. He began the investigation of moving frames of reference, which in Einstein's hands were to revolutionize physics; gave proofs of the existence of electromagnetic waves that paved the way for Hertz's discovery of radio waves; worked out connections between the electrical and optical qualities of bodies that would lead to modern solid-state physics; and applied Tait's quaternion formulae to the field equations, out of which Heaviside and Gibbs would develop vector analysis." (Norman 1466). Very Good.

LA MACHINE ANIMALE :; LOCOMOTION TERRESTRE ET AÉRIENNE

Librairie Germer Baillière, Paris 1873 - 8vo., x, 299, 48 pp., 117 figures in text. An occasional spot of foxing and mild toning. Publisher's deep cranberry/plum colored cloth, decorated and titled in gilt on the upper board with emblem in gilt on the rear board, rebacked in complimentary cordovan morocco with title label in gilt. A later owner's name is neatly stamped on the recto of the front free endpaper. Signed and presented, "Monsieur Le professeur Gavaret, hommage affection, E. Marey." A very good copy. Marey's interest in the biomechanics of locomotion was codified and measured through the use of his ingenious mechanisms, both mechanical and photographic, which are detailed in this volume. The practical implications of these studies had profound affects on aviation, biophysics, and the advent of cinematography. Chapter four deals with the paces of the horse and explains Marey's methods of research. It was one of Marey's published attitudes of the horse which led Gov. Leland Stanford of California to commission Muybridge to do his epoch-making work of the movement of the horse. Marey has presented this volume to Louis Denis Jules Gavarret (1794 - 1894) a French physician and proponent of statistical analysis, and pioneer in the field of biophysics. It was Professor Gavarret who was the principal examiner for Marey's defense of his thesis for his medical doctorate, "Research on Blood Circulation in the Physiological State and in Diseases."         ROUND THE MOON (THE JULES VERNE LIBRARY)

WARD LOCK AND TYLER, LONDON - [1873] This is a scarce extremely early edition of Jules Verne's classic story dating from 1873, the same year as the English first edition. Although the book is not dated, bibliographic notes show that Ward Lock and Tyler existed between 1865 and 1873. Meanwhile, it is also noted by bibliographers that the first edition of Round The Moon was first printed in English in 1873. This makes this book an extremely early edition, since it can only have been printed in the first year of the book's publication in English. Furthermore, the list of Verne's stories to the rear of the book shows this volume as number 12 of 12. This is not a later printing. The book has classic Victorian paper wrap designs, depicting a bullet-like capsule flying to the moon, with green, black and red adornment. There is a colour frontispiece showing the capsule flying skyward, and a later plate titled "a narrow escape" showing splashdown. The boards are rubbed with some chipping. The spine has been replaced with yellow card. This is a genuine rarity in a tight clean condition. Extremely scarce. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
