Der Sprache wahrer Charakter ist für ihn ein poetischer zu den Werten aus Religion, Wissenschaft und Kunst steht sie in Beziehung als "Gefäß, Spiegel, Medium, Zeichen oder Symbol" (vgl.         DIAMONDS! & GOLD!: SOUTH AFRICA / ZIMBABWE / MOZAMBIQUE: ADAMANTIA. THE DIAMOND & GOLD FIELDS OF SOUTH AFRICA BY JAMES WYLD GEOGRAPHER TO THE QUEEN.

London 1872 - Steel engraving with original hand colour, dissected into 15 sections and mounted on original linen, folding into original dark green cloth covers, with printed paper label to front cover and publisher’s advertisements to verso of map inside of front cover (Good, map with original colours still fresh, light, even toning with two light stains in upper left quadrant; cover with wear to spine which is reinforced with archival gauze, label worn with loss), 57 x 45 cm (22.5 x 18 inches). Extremely rare - a seemingly unrecorded very early example of James Wyld’s historically important map depicting the diamond and gold fields of South Africa, a map that literally showcases the genesis of modern of South Africa. This historically important and fascinating separately-issued map is perhaps the earliest example of James Wyld the Younger’s map series depicting the diamond and gold fields of South Africa to come to market in some decades, being the apparently unrecorded second state of the series (the first state is known in only a single example). This would also make it one of the earliest separately-issued South African diamond maps. Published in 1872, at the height of the ‘Diamond Rush’ barely five years after the first discovery of diamonds in South Africa, its focus is the ‘Diamond Region’ (coloured in light blue) that straddled the disputed border region between the British Cape Colony and the Afrikaner republic of the Orange Free State. It also shows the newly exploited gold fields in Mozambique and in what is today Zimbabwe (coloured in yellow). The discovery of diamonds was the first step in the ‘Mineral Revolution’ that utterly transformed South Africa’s politics, economy and society, underpinning the development of the modern nation. This map, perhaps more clearly than any other document, illustrates the genesis of the revolution, and is thus in and of itself an important artefact of the era. The fact that this particular example of the map, a portable edition folding into its original covers, showing signs of practical use in the field (quite possibly by a diamond or gold miner!), only adds to the palpable sense that the map is a part of the same story it tells. The map takes in much of Southern Africa, including all of modern day South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, as well as parts of Mozambique, Zambia and Namibia. Issued by James Wyld the Younger, then perhaps the world’s leading map publisher, it is based on the most accurate geographic information available, for Wyld had long had a line on the most authoritative and ground-breaking sources, having produced several progressively updated general maps of South Africa since 1843, with the first issue of his special Diamond & Gold map being issued in 1871. The Diamond and Gold Regions are clearly marked, while all the major routes to the mineral fields are highlighted in red, with the map meticulously labeling all significant cities, towns and villages, as well as major roads, rivers, geographical features and political jurisdictions. That being said, many areas beyond the realm of European settlement are little known, with vast expanses remaining complete enigmas. The British domains of the Cape Colony and Natal, outlined in pink, take up all of western and coastal South Africa. In the interior northeast are the independent Afrikaner Republics of Transvaal (outlined in orange) and the Orange Free State (outlined in green), the latter of which is shown to have an undefined border with the Cape Colony, a matter which would lead to disputes and warfare in the near future, as diamonds made this land a prize worth fighting for. To the east, is Portuguese Mozambique, while to the north are the lands of the Mashona (Shona) and Matabele (Ndeble) peoples, in today’s Zimbabwe. Historical Context: Diamonds, Gold, War and the Foundation of Modern South Africa The present work is one of the very earliest maps to depict the momentous events that would dramatically alter both the history of

[FINAL MANUSCRIPT DRAFTS OF THE MEMOIRS OF COL. JOSEPH AUDENRIED, AIDE-DE-CAMP TO GEN. WILLIAM T. SHERMAN, RECOUNTING HIS CIVIL WAR EXPERIENCES AND HIS TOUR OF EUROPE WITH SHERMAN IN 1871 AND 1872]

[V.p., 1872. [105];[241]pp. Oblong folio. Contemporary full calf, gilt and blind tooled, a.e.g. Hinges reinforced, light shelf wear. Internally clean. Executed in a neat, legible hand. Near fine. Two important historical manuscripts by Col. Joseph Audenried, giving an account of his service in the Civil War, during which he was a participant in many of the most significant actions, and of Gen. William T. Sherman's European tour, which took place over the course of ten months in 1871 and 1872. Joseph Crain Audenried (1839-1880) was born in Pennsylvania and graduated from West Point in 1861. Breveted a second lieutenant, he assisted in organizing and training troops in Washington before being assigned as aide-de-camp to General Daniel Tyler, one of the commanders at the First Battle of Bull Run. In March, 1862, Audenried transferred to the staff of Gen. William H. Emory, and four months later to the staff of Gen. Edwin Sumner, where he served as aide-de- camp. Audenried was seriously wounded at Antietam, was cited by Sumner for gallantry, and breveted to captain. After Sumner's death in March, 1863, Audenried was briefly assigned to Gen. Wool's command, and then travelled to the western theatre to join Ulysses S. Grant's staff, where he participated in the fall of Vicksburg. In October, 1863, Audenried was transferred to Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman's command, and he served as Sherman's aide-de-camp and principal assistant until his death in 1880 at age forty. With Sherman, Audenried participated in the events for which Sherman is most famous - the siege of Atlanta, the March to the Sea and the March through the Carolinas. Audenried's memoir provides a detailed account of the major occurrences and campaigns in which he was a central figure, including a transcription of his daily diary entries from the March to the Sea. The second, lengthier manuscript documents Sherman's tour through Europe in the early 1870s, and describes the places they went and people they met, their observations and experiences. Sherman had been made Commanding General of the U.S. Army in 1869, and his lengthy tour was part diplomatic mission and part goodwill tour, but also an opportunity for him to gauge the military situation in Europe and to visit battlefields of the Franco-Prussian and Crimean wars. Sherman and Audenried were joined by Ulysses S. Grant's son, Lt. Frederick Grant, and the party saw a number of places during their extensive journey. They travelled from New York to Spain, and then across France to Italy, from there to Malta and Egypt, to Turkey and Russia, and then to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, England, Scotland, and Ireland. Audenried kept a journal during the tour in 1871-1872, and the present manuscript is the narrative form of that journal, written by Audenried in 1878. Audenried's journal is the principal source of information on Sherman's Grand Tour, as Sherman discusses the entire ten- month journey in three paragraphs of his two-volume MEMOIRS. Portions of Audenried's account were published in three issues of HARPER'S WEEKLY in 1873. To our knowledge, however, Audenried's complete manuscript has never been published, and he died in 1880, just two years after he wrote the present narrative. Sherman and his party departed New York on board the U.S.S. Wabash on Friday, November 17, 1871 and reached the port of Funchal on the island of Madeira on Tuesday, December 5th, taking less than three weeks to cross the Atlantic. The journal records their travels through each country they visited, describing in great detail the places they saw and the events held in their honor, including dinners hosted by King Victor Emmanuel of Italy, the King of France, and the Sultan of Turkey. Sherman also had an audience with Pope Pius IX, and met with Russian Tsar Alexander II and Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. They visited Pompeii, ascended Vesuvius and the Egyptian pyramids, and toured the battlefields of the Franco-Prussian and Crimean wars. A long part of the journal is devoted to the time spent in Egypt and Cairo, including encounters with Confederate veterans who were serving in the Egyptian Army, a description of the Suez Canal, and a visit to a mosque. On March 20, 1872, the group visited the pyramids, which Audenried, Sherman, and Grant climbed, and then Audenried discusses their journey inside the pyramid itself. When they initially reached Alexandria, they were met by General Charles P. Stone, a veteran of the Union army who was at the time Adjutant General of the Egyptian Army. Stone accompanied them during much of their time in Egypt. From Egypt they sailed for Asia Minor, and arrived at Smyrna in early April, visited Ephesus, and then went on to Constantinople. Audenried describes their visit to the Sultan's palace, and their subsequent meetings with various government officials. From Turkey they went into Russia, visiting Sevastopol (which was besieged during the Crimean War) and Yalta on the Black Sea. Travelling further eastward they came to "Tiflis" (Tblisi, the capital of present-day Georgia), and, then went to Moscow and Saint Petersburg. They were treated warmly in Russia, meeting many members of the Tsar's family and being feted everywhere they went. Their reception in Berlin, however, was quite cool, likely due to the fact that the American government sold some $14 million in arms to the French during the recent Franco-Prussian War. Audenried's journal continues in similar fashion as they travel westward through Europe, with additional stops in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and finally to England and Ireland. They departed Queenstown, Ireland (present- day Cobh) and arrived back in New York in mid-September, 1872. Two fascinating unpublished manuscripts that provide great detail of Joseph Audenried's Civil War experience and of Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman's journey through Egypt, Turkey, Russia, and Europe, the only detailed firsthand account of this important tour.

Ancient Faiths Embodied in Ancient Names; An Attempt to Trace the Religious Belief, Sacred Rites, and Holy Emblems of Certain Nations By an Interpretations of the Names Given Children By Priestly Authority, or Assumed By Prophets, Kings, and Hierarchs (Two Volumes)

London: Trubner & Co., 1872. Second Editon, Revised. Hardcover. Very Good. Two Volume Set. Thick octavo. Bound in brown cloth with decorated panels stamped in gilt with ancient god figures to boards, gilt titles and figures to spine. Beveled edges. Volume I: [xviv],792 pages. Volume II: [xvi], 1028 pages. Illustrated with 12 Plates with numerous line drawings in text. Former owner's bookplate to front paste down. Paper split at hinges but binding still holding strong. There is wear to all corners and light edge wear to spine ends. Light areas of discoloration to the rear board of volume one. Many pages remain unopened, mostly in volume two. A VERY GOOD SET. Quite scarce. The title of this epic work is misleading. It is not a list of names of persons analyzed. It is more an encyclopedia of pagan and mystical symbols, types and forms of worship, gods, goddesses, divination systems, holy words, and more, from many ancient cultures. There is a very strong emphasis on the sexual nature of all emblems, symbolism and ritual, throughout the work. The author's vast research shows that he was very well acquainted with the languages and literatures of antiquity. He presents an immense amount of curious lore with regard to the sacred rites and ceremonies of ancient religions. The symbols, emblems and images which have served as representatives of Deity, and which have received worship from man, are shown to be much the same the world over. Inman traces these emblems, etc., through the Egyptian, Assyrian, Hebrew, Syrian, and other religions. A very odd work indeed.

Through The Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There

London: Macmillan & Co., 1872 Illustrated by John Tenniel. First edition, first printing, with "wade" instead of "wabe" to page 21. Original publisher's red cloth, with an illustration of the Red Queen to the front board in gilt, with an illustration of the White Queen to the rear panel in gilt, all edges gilt, black coated endpapers. About near fine, with the spine light cracked and holding at pages 128/129, otherwise sturdy binding, some toning to the spine, minor soiling to the rear board, some light wear and rubbing to the otherwise clean binding, some light spotting to the endpapers, former owner's 1872 inscription to the front free endpaper, binder's plate of Burns & Co. (the official Macmillan binders) to the rear pastedown, a few faint and scattered smudges to the otherwise very clean pages. A very sturdy and tight copy, free of any repairs or restoration. Scarce in this condition. Housed in a custom clamshell box. Through the Looking Glass is Lewis Carroll's sequel to his popular children's novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865). In this story, which represents the child protagonist's journey from adolescence to adulthood, Alice ventures into a fantasy world through the mirror above her fireplace. Throughout the novel, Carroll includes nonsense poetry, including the playful and popular "Jabberwocky." Like Alice, Through the Looking Glass is illustrated by John Tenniel. Carroll originally intended to write this sequel as early as 1866, but had trouble persuading Tenniel to illustrate it. Writer and artist had a somewhat volatile relationship as a result of their mutual perfectionism: just as the true first edition of Alice was suppressed because of unsatisfactory illustrations, Through the Looking Glass's illustrations were heavily edited. Tenniel demanded the removal of a character that was too difficult to illustrate, whereas Carroll replaced Tenniel's "Jabberwock" plate with an image of the White Knight, which was less frightening, as a frontispiece. This volume's beautiful binding complements the fine condition of the text block and the quality of illustrations without losing the aesthetic of the original publication; Bayntun-Riviere's covers mimic the Appleton binding in color and design.. Illus. by Tenniel, John. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

Numerous illus. in the text (one double-page & in color). 28; 42 folding leaves. Two vols. Small 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block-printed title label on upper covers, modern stitching. Tokyo: 1872. This is the first work to include the recipe for the beloved "curry and rice" which is still so popular in Japan. The illustrations depict the cooking utensils mentioned above. The double-page colored illustration shows four Japanese men at a Western-style dining table, being served Western foods by a woman. The four men and the woman are all dressed in Western-style clothes. Fine copy.

Wear to edges, especially at spine ends, corners repaired, occasional light foxing to text and photo mounts, photographs are fine. The photographs, though small at 3.25 x 5.5 inches, are beautiful. This third edition was published following Kneeland's second visit to Yosemite and adds 19 pages of text (second edition was 79 pp). The new text includes Winter in the Yosemite Valley and The Yosemite Glaciers, and both sections make frequent mention of John Muir and his observations and experiences in the Yosemite. A second printing of the third edition added more photographs. Currey & Kruska 225, Kimes 8, Cowan overlooks the 2nd & third editions.

Insgesamt aber sehr frisches und wohlerhaltenes Exemplar. Erste Ausgabe. - MGG IV, 757.

The Art of Graining: How Acquired and How Produced. With Description of Colors and Their Applications. With Lithographic Illustrations of the Various Woods Used in Interior Finishing

Brief 21 pp. text including instructions on how to mix and apply colors to achieve the effect of wood graining, with specific instructions for various woods including oak, black walnut, rosewood, maple, ash, and chestnut, followed by 42 full-page color plates demonstrating a range of grains that can be replicated of the various types of woods with an eye towards their application in interior design. Scattered foxing, minor staining, several plates with minor damp staining at left side of margin, repairs to back endpaper. 4to. Cloth, minor rubbing to extremities, minor soiling. New York (Van Nostrand) 1872. The use of wood graining as a decorative technique in interior decoration was popular beginning in the 18th century. Light layers of paints and glazes were applied using specialized brushes and combs to imitate the appearance of wood grain patterns. While some decorative graining was very imaginative and whimsical, the examples included in this book mimic highly realistic and natural patterns of wood grain.

ALBERT N'YANZA, GREAT BASIN OF THE NILE, AND EXPLORATIONS OF THE NILE SOURCES

London Macmillan and Co. 1872 - A very early edition, one of the earliest in one volume format. With 34 illustrations, including 12 full-page plates and with a map printed in colours. 8vo, very handsomely presented in a contemporary binding of three-quarter red morocco over red pebbled cloth covered boards, the spine with gilt stippled raised bands multi-ruled in gilt, additional gilt work at the head and tail, gilt lettering in one compartment, endpapers and page edges marbled. xxvii, 499 pp. A fine and very handsome copy in all, internally unusually bright and fresh, free of foxing and very clean, the binding sturdy and very well preserved, the spine bright and with very little evidence of age or use. A VERY HANDSOME COPY OF THIS HIGHLY IMPORTANT WORK. This is Sir Samuel Baker's account of his discovery of the last great source of the Nile, Speke and Grant having established Lake Victoria N'yanza as the source of the White Nile and Bruce discovering the source of the Blue. The waters of Victoria N'yanza flow into the basin of Albert N'yanza, which Speke and Grant were not permitted to visit, and the latter adds the accumulation of its watershed to the former to create the great White Nile, flowing massively from Albert N'yanza. The importance of the debate over the source of the Nile, combined with Baker's very readable writing style, made his books enormously popular, with the result that they were reprinted a great many times over the years. Very scarce book with the original signature of Bertrand Russell, one of the founders of analytic philosophy. Highly Collectable. Includes the following chapters: My Present Views of the World / Excursion into Idealism / Logical Technique in Mathematics / Principia Mathematica: Philosophical Aspects / Principia Mathematica: Mathematical Aspects / The Impact of Wittgenstein / Theory of Knowledge / The Retreat from Pythagoras / etc. Bertrand Arthur William Russell, 3rd Earl Russell (18 May 1872 2 February 1970) was a British philosopher, logician, mathematician, historian, writer, social critic, political activist and Nobel laureate. At various points in his life he considered himself a liberal, a socialist, and a pacifist, but he also admitted that he had "never been any of these things, in any profound sense". He was born in Monmouthshire into one of the most prominent aristocratic families in the United Kingdom. In the early 20th century, Russell led the British "revolt against idealism". He is considered one of the founders of analytic philosophy along with his predecessor Gottlob Frege, colleague G. E. Moore, and his protégé Ludwig Wittgenstein. He is widely held to be one of the 20th century's premier logicians. With A. N. Whitehead he wrote Principia Mathematica, an attempt to create a logical basis for mathematics. His philosophical essay "On Denoting" has been considered a "paradigm of philosophy". His work has had a considerable influence on logic, mathematics, set theory, linguistics, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, computer science (see type theory and type system), and philosophy, especially the philosophy of language, epistemology, and metaphysics. Russell was a prominent anti-war activist he championed anti-imperialism and went to prison for his pacifism during World War I. Later, he campaigned against Adolf Hitler, then criticised Stalinist totalitarianism, attacked the involvement of the United States in the Vietnam War, and was an outspoken proponent of nuclear disarmament. In 1950 Russell was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "in recognition of his varied and significant writings in which he champions humanitarian ideals and freedom of thought" (Wikipedia)

Wilson, F. Grasshoff, Suddards & Fennemore, T.T. Sweeney, Wm. Kurtz, Jones & Stiff, Dinmore & Wilson, E. M. Klinedinst, J. A. Scholten, J. Landy, et al. A complete run, save the missing Issue 23 of November 1872. Appended to each issue is THE PHOTOGRAPHIC TIMES. Edited by Edward Wilson and published by Scovil Manufacturing Company, New York. The paginations vary and the numbering sequence extends that of THE PHOTOGRAPHIC WORLD. The publishing history is rather complicated and obscure for this serial. Walter Koelzer, in Photographic and Cinematographic Periodicals No. 18700 states, "Between 1864 and 1870 published as a supplement of THE PHILADELPHIA PHOTOGRAPHER. Became and independent journal between 1871 - 1872, and merged finally in January 1873 with THE PHILADELPHIA PHOTOGRAPHER. 1871 is called Volume 1" [Attributes: First Edition]

Ett år i stilla hafvet reseminnen från Patagonien, Chili, Peru, Californien, Britiska Columbia och Oceanien.

Lith. Art. Anstalt, Stockholm 1872 - Quarto, with 12 tinted lithographic plates; a very good copy in original decorated boards. Scarce and finely illustrated voyage account, including handsome lithographed portraits of the Hawaiian monarchs Kamehameha the Fourth and Kamehameha the Fifth. The author, Adolf Ekelöf, was a young Swedish lieutenant who sailed on the English frigate Zealous to the Pacific in 1867. In addition to descriptions of California and British Columbia, this book is particularly interesting for its Pacific material, with significant entries on Hawaii, Tahiti, and other South Sea Islands. Unusually, Ekelof provides both the music and words to an Hawaiian Folk Hymn and a Tahitian National Melody. The lithographic plates are well rendered - some are clearly produced from portrait photographs while others are based on marine and landscape sketches. Of the twelve plates, seven are of Hawaiian and Tahitian subjects. In addition to the plate of the Hawaiian monarchs mentioned above, the book includes portraits of Queen Pomare of Tahiti and a coastal scene at Waikiki. Backstrip and endpapers renewed.
