Drops of Water.

The National Temperance Society and Publication House, New York 1872 - First Edition of the Author's First Book. 12mo; 132pp; + 8pp. ads for "Publications of the National Temperence Society"; brick-colored cloth, printed in gold gilt with black decorations, rubbed at all edges, especially corners and spine, soiling to most pages at margins, "Don't Drink" on page 7 with large erasure with loss of 4 or 5 words, good only. Ella Wheeler Wilcox (1850-1919), poet and journalist, wrote her first novel at age 9. By the age of 14, she had successfully submitted some prose sketches to the New York Mercury. She left school to devote her time to her writing, hoping to escape family poverty through her pen. She did attend the University of Wisconsin in 1867. In 1872, she published a collection of temperance poems which won a small audience. Fame, as well as notoriety came in 1883 when a Chicago firm refused to publish her POEMS OF PASSION (although much of the verse therein had previously appeared in journals). Another publisher picked up on the free publicity and publishedthe volume before the year was out. It sold 60,000 copies in the first two years, making Ella Wheeler's reputation. She married Robert Wilcox in 884, and moved to New York shortly thereafter. She produced a syndicated column of prose and poetry which had a large following. She was interested in spiritualism, trying desperately to contact her husband through the spirit world after his death. She reached a broad audience with her verse, penning the lines "Laugh, and the world laughs with you; / Weep, and you weep alone." NAW III, pp. 607-608. VI, 327, 12 (Index), plus 37 unpag.Tafeln mit jeweils vorliegendem Seidenpapier mit Tafel-Erläuterungen. Folio-Format (35,5x28cm). Jahrhunderts.

        ALS ("A. C. Swinburne").

Henley-on-Thames, 25. X. 1872.. 8vo. 2 pp. on folded double leaf.. To the Italian poet P. G. Maggi, who had in 1871 published a translation of Swinburne's "Blessed Among Women - To The Signora Cairoli". Swinburne expresses his sympathy for the cause of the Risorgimento and mentions his great Baudelaire elegy, "Ave Atque Vale": "I fear you must have thought me very negligent + discorteous not to have written to you before in acknowledgment at one of your letter of July last, + of the very beautiful version which you have done me the honour to make of my poem addressed 'Alla Signora Carioli:' which reached me without address, or I should at once have written to thank you for the great pleasure it had given me. Nothing, in fact, connected with my work, could give me so much happiness as to know that it found favour - or at least that my intentions found acceptance - in the sight if those Italians whose approval + sympathy I should esteem the truest honour + highest reward I could wish to earn. I wish only that the work were worthier, + more adequate to express my love of your country + its cause - which is the cause of Europe + of the world. - I have not by me a copy of my verses in memory of Baudelaire; but on the first opportunity I will desire my publisher to send you a copy. Your letter of July was directed to an address which I left two years ago; + thus, passing from place to place, it was some months before it came into my hands. I now hasten to acknowledge it + to apologize for the long but involutary delay [...]". - Traces of folds; one edge slightly gnawed (touching text). Includes a copy of Maggi's translation [16 pp. 8vo; Londra, 1871], as well a manuscript of the same, probably in Maggi's own hand (24 pp. 8vo).

Some woodcuts in the text. 22 vols. Small 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block printed title label on each upper cover, new stitching. [Japan]: 1872-75. First edition in Japanese of one of the two most important medical works by Henry Hartshorne, his Essentials of the Principles and Practice of Medicine (1st ed.: Philadelphia, 1867). Hartshorne (1823-97), a Quaker, took his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania and was active during the cholera epidemic in Philadelphia in 1849. He later served as a field surgeon during the battle of Gettysburg. He held various professorships, including one at the University of Pennsylvania, and was active in women's rights, American Indian rights, education, public health, and philanthropy. Hartshorne was highly esteemed in Japan and his two most important books -- the other being A Conspectus of the Medical Sciences (1869) -- were promptly translated into Japanese. In 1893, he moved with one of his daughters to Japan and was active in missionary work. He also made notable efforts to prevent the traffic in opium. The translator was Kohei Kawada (1836-1905), a physician and author of several medical books. He held several high medical posts in the Japanese government's medical institute. This is a complete set in twenty-two volumes. Complete sets in nice condition are rare. Fine set. ❧ D.A.B., IV, pp. 368-69. .

Presentation copy specially bound by the publisher and inscribed by Wagner on the front blank, "Seinem freundlichen Gönner, Herrn Grafen Dönhof, der Verfasser Richard Wagner" ["To his benefactor, Count Donhof, the Author Richard Wagner"]. Wagner and the Count had met in Paris in 1860 or 61. While Wagner was a prolific letter-writer, inscribed presentation copies of his works are much scarcer. This volume, "Actors and Singers", was one of Wagner's most influential writings, in which he challengers fundamental questions of aesthetic appreciation. In a letter to Wagner, Friedrich Nietzsche wrote that, "your splended essay on 'Actors and Singers' has again kindled in me the desire to have some one make a comprehensive review from your researches and conclusions in the field of aesthetics, and thereby show what radical changes have taken place in regard to artistic viewpoints, – changes whereby these viewpoints have been deepened and intensified so that practically nothing remains of the traditional theories of 'Aesthetics'". Utah Southern Railroad Company Check

[Salt Lake City], September 4, 1872. $500 check made out to “Jm. Sharp” and signed by Utah Southern RR president Brigham Young, and secretary George Swan. A nice vignette of a steam engine, coal car and passenger car is at the left margin.Tax stamp in upper left corner. Check is printed with blanks to be filled in and hand numbered 241. Three vertical folds with some splitting. Minor overall age toning. 'Jm. Sharp' is likely James Sharp who was a Salt Lake City Councilman and was the assistant general superintendent of the Utah Central and a member of the board of directors of the Utah and Nevada Railroad. The [memo line] is filled out 'Expenses' George Swan was a leading businessman in the territory. The Mormon Church got into the railroad business after the joining of rails on May 10th, 1869 and the end of isolationism in Mormon Country with the completion of the transcontinental railroad, and with this mainline sixty miles to the north of the Mormon capitol in Salt Lake City, the local territorial leaders went to work. The Utah Central Railroad was quickly incorporated and completed (1870), which was the first spur line of the transcontinental railroad in Utah and connected the mainline to Ogden and then on to Salt Lake. Other rail lines that were incorporated around this same time, by many of the same people - Brigham Young and his son, John W. Young, were fist among this group. This group of investors would go on to complete the Utah Northern (Ogden to Franklin, ID) and the Utah Southern (Salt Lake to near present day Santaquin). Brigham Young was the acting president of the Utah Southern. All of these rail lines would be acquired by Union Pacific between the late 1870s and early 1880s. The Utah Southern (1871-1881) was short lived and ephemera from this company is uncommon, and signed by Brigham Young (non secretarial) is scarce.

Picturesque America; or the Land we Live in. [Two Volumes in Six].

New York: D. Appleton and Co., (1872).. Folio. Publisher's brick red pebbled cloth stamped in gilt and black. Profusion of plates and illustrations. Sabin 62692 (2 vol. issue). BAL 1732.2. "A delineation by pen and pencil of the mountains, rivers, lakes, forests, water-falls, shores, canns, valleys, cities, and other picturesque features of our country. With illustrations on steel and wood, by eminent American artists." Blanck notes two editions (no priority) this being no. 2 with the statement "edited by William Cullen Bryant" on each title page and the re-written, extended preface bearing Bryant's name at the end. This edition was the one also issued in six volumes. Rare as a six volume set in publisher's cloth (usually seen in two volumes, occasionally four). While Oliver B. Bunce did the main literary work, Bryant edited and reviewed everything to "see that no nonsense crept into the text" (BAL p.355). "This truly superb work consists of a complete description and elaborate pictorial illustration of the greater part of the North American Continent. It portrays the great mountain-ranges, the lakes, the valleys, the grand primitive forests, the cascades, the magnificent rivers, the towns and cities, in brief, all the picturesque aspects of our land from Canada to the Gulf, from the Atlantic to the Pacific. For several years artists were specially employed in visiting different parts of the Union for the purpose of procuring designs for this work. The views, hence, are not only original and trustworthy, but possess the vividness of personal observation, and include the movement and life characteristic of each locality. The volumes are something more than a gallery of landscapes; they exhibit our people in their methods of living and traveling, delineate the picturesque phases of commerce, as well as the sublime forms of our hills, show the often beautiful setting of our cities, and portray the active and brilliant panorama of our bays and rivers. All the marvelously varied phases of our country are set forth with the utmost fullness, so that the work in its completeness forms a splendid pictorial cyclopaedia of American life, scenery, and places. The illustrations of this great work alone cost fully one hundred and thirty thousand dollars. The engravings consist of steel and wood. The steel plates are printed on heavy, toned plate-paper; the wood illustrations are of the finest character, and abundantly interspersed through the text, which is printed on heavy, extra- calendered, toned paper; the size imperial quarto, " (From the publisher's advertisement in the Gems of the Centennial Exhibition, Phila. 1876). Very good or better copies, wear to a few spine ends, minor edgewear, the odd light foxing else contents about fine. A beautiful set in uncommon issue.

Report of a reconnaissance of the basin of the upper Yellowstone in 1871. Letter from the Secretary of War, accompanying an engineer report of a reconnaissance of the Yellowstone River in 1871. April 18, 1872. 42nd Congr

[Washington, D.C.]: [Government Printing Office], 1872.. 43 pp. + map. Modern brown cloth with gilt titles. First edition. Illus. with a folding lithographed map. 69 x 30.5 cm. (27 x 12 inches). Howes B145. Wheat Transmississippi 1220. Eberstadt 134-445. "The first recorded visit to Yellowstone Park was made by John Colter in 1810 when he took refuge there from hostile Indians. No one believed his story of what he saw there, nor did they believe that of the next visitor, Joseph Meek, in 1829. Finally, in the 1850's the region was described in considerable detail in the writings of Father DeSmet, the famous Jesuit missionary, who had obtained most of his information from the mountain man, Jim Bridger. In 1859, Capt. W. F. Reynolds led a government expedition to the area, but it brought back little information and was discredited by a public dead set on not believing what was there. Finally, in 1870, N. P. Langford and H. D. Washburn led a well-equipped, thorough expedition that not only established the facts about the region but also led directly to the creation of Yellowstone National Park on March 1, 1872. Langford was appointed the first Superintendent of the Park, which was the Federal government's first program for preserving any extensive area of the national lands for public use. The magnificent park included over two million acres in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, and included some of the most beautiful and breathtaking area in the country, " Jenkins (JJ100-299). Includes the scarce map of the upper Yellowstone with much detail of the area surveyed. Provenance: From the library of Kenneth E. Hill, with his bookplate. A very good+ copy, small bookplate, with expert repair to bottom edge of first leaf, large folding map skillfully silked on reverse at each fold, in a fine modern binding.

A JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH

1872. [the TRUE first American] With Fifty-two Illustrations by Riou. New York: Scribner, Welford and Company | London: Griffith & Farran, 1872. 8 pp undated ads [G&F, in sterling]. Original orange cloth decorated in black and gilt. First British Edition (and first edition in the English language) -- this being a copy of THE HITHERTO-UNKNOWN AMERICAN ISSUE. Griffith & Farran of London first published this science fiction tale in English in November 1871 (but post-dated it 1872); the first edition printed in America, using this same translation, has long been known to be the one by Scribner Armstrong & Co., published in late 1873 (and so dated). Griffith & Farran's first edition was priced at an astronomical seven pounds per copy -- which may be why today it is, in our experience, THE scarcest British edition of any Jules Verne book.~ The present copy is from that first edition by Griffith & Farran -- with the G&F decorative binding (erroneously claiming 53 illustrations, disagreeing with the title page's correct 52) and the G&F ads. However, what sets this copy apart is that it has a cancel title leaf, on which the publisher is "New York: Scribner, Welford and Company | London: Griffith & Farran", followed by the date 1872.~Charles Welford first went to London in 1864 to begin buying English books for Charles Scribner (as his London agent); he would arrange with a London publisher to have a small number of copies of a British novel exported to America, which copies would bear a cancel title leaf reading (in 1871) "Scribner, Welford and Company". (It would be in 1872 that "Scribner Armstrong & Co." was formed -- and "Scribner Welford & Armstrong" for books imported from London; in mid-1878 Armstrong retired, and the firms' names changed to "Charles Scribner's Sons" and "Scribner & Welford" -- the latter of which continued to import books (such as G. A. Henty's) until the International Copyright Act was passed in 1891, making such importation no longer necessary.)~One other Verne book was imported into America bearing Welford's name -- MERIDIANA, in 1873; it is estimated that as few as 50 copies of that title were imported, as it is an extremely scarce book. Inasmuch as NO other copy of the "Welford" JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH has surfaced until now, 50 copies would clearly be on the high side of any estimate, with 10 or 12 being quite possible.~This copy is bound in orange cloth (green was also used for the G&F edition, but we don't know if any "Welford" copies were bound in that color). The volume appears quite clean and bright, though it has been recased in its original binding, with newer orange cloth added in behind (in effect providing new strong joints); the original endpapers are present, and all 52 plates are present. Taves & Michaluk V002 (not citing the existence of American copies such as this).

Two letters from the founder of modern neurology in France, best known for his electrophysiological studies of the nerves and muscles; see G-M 614, 624, 4732, 4736, etc. In his first letter, Duchenne notifies his publisher that he will be returning several books lent to him by the Baillieres for the purpose of compiling an unnamed work-possibly the collection of articles published in the early 1870s under the title Contributions a l'Ètude du systeme nerveux et du systeme musculaire. Among the books Duchenne borrowed were a 2-volume work by Jaccoud (possibly his Traite de pathologie interne, 1870-71); a work by Holmes on the diseases of children (possibly Timothy Holmes' Surgical Treatment of the Diseases of Infancy and Childhood, 1868); Vol. III of Francois Longet's Traite de physiologie (3rd ed., 1868-69); and Leuret and Gratiolet's Anatomie comparee du systeme nerveux (1839-57). In the second letter Duchenne reminds the Baillieres that the Jaccoud work mentioned in his previous letter had been sent to him in error, and that the BailliËres had billed him twice for the Leuret-Gratiolet set. Accompanying these letters are two articles on Duchenne's life and scientific work.
