Costumes usos e trajos de Todos os Povos do Mundo em face de documentos authenticos e das mais recentes viagens

Lisbon: Imprensa Lusitana Typographia Lisbonense, 1872-, 1873. Thick octavo, 153 highly-finished handcoloured engravings; original interleaves generally present, a couple of plates spotted, but generally fine and bright in red blind-panelled morocco (a little rubbed), all edges gilt. Rare Portuguese edition of Wahlen's Moeurs, Usages et Costumes de tous les peuples du monde… (Brussels, 1844), published well after Wahlen's death in 1850. Wahlen's is a scarce and beautiful work on the costumes of the world, finely illustrated with a wonderful series of highly coloured full-page plates. This Portuguese edition is not recorded by Ferguson, although there are 30 plates of Oceania; it includes the Aborigines of Jervis Bay and Kangaroo Island, and the exotic peoples of Pitcairn Island, New Guinea, Timor, Java, New Zealand and Hawaii. As with the earlier Brussels edition, the plates are drawn from published voyage accounts. The startling portraits of the Aborigines of Jervis Bay and Kangaroo Island are copied from De Sainson's studies made on Dumont D'Urville's voyage on the Astrolabe. Other images come from Krusenstern, while the Tahitian dancer is after John Webber from the account of Cook's third voyage. Portrait profiles of Maoris are based on Sydney Parkinson's images published in the official account of Cook's first voyage, and a native of New Guinea is adapted from P. Van Oort's "Native of Dourga Strait , New Guinea", which appeared as the frontispiece to Earl's The Native Races of the Indian Archipelago. This is a volume of plates only, evidently part of a larger work (it is numbered volume 6 on the spine). The National Library's copy has two volumes.

Die Geburt der Tragödie aus dem Geiste der Musik.

Leipzig, E.W. Fritzsch, 1872. 8vo. Cont. brown hcalf w. four raised bands and gilt back. Small worm tracts along lower back hinge, causing a little loss of leather. Binding fine and tight. Occational brownspotting. IV, 143, (1) pp.. The rare first edition, first issue, of Nietzsche's first work, his seminal "The Birth of Tragedy out of the Spirit of Music", which started his career and brought him immediate fame. The first edition was printed in less than 700 copies (probably about 625), and is thus scarce."In his youth he became a disciple of Schopenhauer but his immediate friendship with Wagner was a decisive feature in Nietzsche's development, although the bitter hatred that later arose between them, in the words of Ernest Newman "poisened his pen as the thing itself had once poisened his soul." His principal work during the Wagner period, 1868-78, was "Die Geburt der Tragödie aus dem Geiste der Musik", 1872. In this he adopted a tragico-pessimistic conception of Greek civilization, like Burckhardt but contrary to Grote. This started his career as a critic of modern civilization based on disgust with imperial Germany, Christianity, bourgeois ethics, and so on." (PMM, p.224).Nietzsche was originally a philologist, and in this his first, and perhaps most interesting, work he discusses the history of the Greek tragedy, a discussion that was to become of great importance. He introduces a distinction between what he calls the Dionysian and the Apollonian principles, claiming that life always involves a struggle between these two elements, each battling for control over the existence of humanity. Due to the unnoticible mixture of these two elements, the Greek tragedy constitutes the highest form of art, and the human condition can be understood in full when understanding these tragedies. The work geniusly isolates and then combines the most important strands of German idealism and unites them at a new level. "The Birth of Tragedy..." represents an entirely new way of understanding philology as well as philosophy

SS Governor Blackall off Sydney Heads

circa, 1872. Oil on board, 420 x 590mm, framed in birds eye maple. A Sydney-built steamship in the Harbour. A fine oil-painting of what was then the largest vessel to have been constructed in the colony, the steamship Governor Blackall, launched at Waterview Bay, Sydney on 27 September 1870. Here seen off Sydney Heads, the Governor Blackall was an iron vessel built to the order of the Queensland government and intended as a mail and passenger boat. It was the seventh steamer to have been constructed by Mort's Dry Dock and Engineering Company. Contemporary reports suggest that over 2000 people saw the ship launched, and that it was 'admitted by everyone to be one of the finest specimens of naval architecture ever constructed in the colony; (Sydney Morning Herald, 14 September 1870). The ship was named after the Governor of Queensland, Samuel Wensley Blackall, who had been appointed in 1868 soon after his arrival from Ireland. Despite arriving in the midst of a constitutional crisis he was a popular leader, known for his willingness to assist any genuine public cause. But by the time the steamer was launched in 1870 the Governor's health was failing and he died the following year. The town of Blackall and the Blackall Range were named after him. Blackall, and the then Queensland Premier Charles Lilley, had visited Sydney in 1869 and signed a contract to purchase the steamer in an attempt to stem the increase of mail subsidy claims by the monopolistic Australasian Steam Navigation Company. However, by 1884 the Governor Blackall was again part of the Australasian Steam Navigation Company and by 1886 when the company was bought out by the British India and Queensland Agency Company the ship was discarded. The largest vessel ever to have been built in the colony ended up in Rotten Row, Sydney Harbour.

Autograph letter signed "Fr. Luetke", to Russian Privy councillor Von Adelung

St. Petersburg: 22 October, 1872. Manuscript in ink on paper, single leaf folded to form four pages, 210 x 130 mm; in fine condition. Rare example of a letter by one of the great Russian explorers. An interesting and rare private letter from the explorer Count Fyodor Petrovich Lütke. Lütke, who started his career in the Imperial Russian Navy in 1813, was a member of Golovnin's voyage on the Kamchatka (1817-19). Subsequently he himself led (1821-24) the expedition to explore the coastline of Novaya Zemlya, the White Sea, and the eastern parts of the Barents Sea. From 1826 to 1829 he commanded the last great Russian scientific voyage to the Northwest coast of America: sailing to the Pacific on the Senyavin via Cape Horn, they reached Sitka in 1827 and spent over a month there. They continued north to Unalaska and the Aleutian Islands, going as far north as St Matthew Island and the Bering Sea, and surveying the coast of the Alaskan Peninsula as far as Kvichak Bay. Islands in the Caroline group of Micronesia were explored during the winter of 1828, and they visited Guam, the Philippines, and St Helena Island in the south Atlantic before returning to Kronstadt in September 1829. The printed account of his voyage on the Senyavin is one of the rarest Pacific voyages today, and was rare even in the nineteenth century (the bibliographer Sabin could only explain this by pointing out that the small edition is said to have been almost entirely bought up within Russia, unlike other voyage publications of the period which reached a much wider audience). Lütke became an influential member of the Russian Geographic Society, chairman of the Naval Scientific Committee, commander-in-chief and military governor of the ports of Reval and later Kronstadt, and a member of the Russian State Council. In 1873, the Geographical Society introduced the Lütke gold medal. He is commemorated by many placenames, including a cape, a peninsula, a mountain and a bay in Novaya Zemlya, as well as a group of islands of the Franz Josef Land, Baydaratskaya Bay, and Nordenskiöld Archipelago. A strait between Kamchatka and Karaginsky Island, as well as a Russian icebreaker were also named after him. In this letter to the Russian privy councillor von Adelung, Lütke discusses the financial support of his friend's niece. Lütke gives advice on how this might be accomplished with the help of prominent members of St. Petersburg society including the Secretary of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, the mathematician Paul Heinrich Fuss, past and present Ministers of Culture Counts Uwarov and Tolstoy, as well as Tsarina Olga Nicolajevna.

The Owl and the Pussy-Cat and Other Nonsense Songs. lllustrated by Lord Ralph Kerr

London: Cundall and Co., 1872. Oblong folio, with twelve mounted albumen photographs measuring 185 x 245 mm., interleaved with blanks; an unusually good copy of a book typically found in poor condition, original gilt decorated green publisher's cloth boards, now rebacked. First edition, of this this rare and unusual edition of Lear's famous nonsense poems. The format of this publication itself is somewhat unusual, comprising a series of mounted albumen photographic plates. Only the title-page and contents leaf are conventional letterpress, and two of the three poems are reprinted from Nonsense Songs and Stories of 1871 (being 'The Owl and the Pussy-Cat' and 'The Duck and the Kangaroo'). Edward Lear was an accomplished artist and natural history illustrator, whose 'accomplishments were as varied as his personality was idiosyncratic. Late in life he reproached himself for writing "such volumes of stuff" but each of his books - whether he was dealing with birds, or scenery, or nonsense - is made valuable by his individual touch" (Ray, p.59). 'The Duck and the Kangaroo' is one of Lear's most cherished ditties; generously illustrated with life-like kangaroo studies and a cigar smoking duck.

        Roughing It

Hartford, Conn: American Publishing Company, 1872. First edition. about Fine. A wonderful, about Fine copy of the book in the publisher's scarce half morocco binding: raised bands on the spine, marbled end papers and edges. Only the lightest wear to the leather at the outer hinge of the front board, otherwise an excellent copy with the first state of p. 242. A book that is surprisingly scarce in anything approaching Fine condition.& & Twain';s humorous travelogue of his journey to the Wild West - and Hawaii. Twain had just served briefly as a militiaman in the Confederacy but quickly left before deciding to pay a visit to his brother, who had been made secretary of the Nevada Territory. Though the book was published in 1872, it was actually based on experiences Twain had between the early and mid 1860s. It';s one of Twain';s earliest published books. Noted critic William Dean Howells wrote, in a contemporary review in The Atlantic: "A thousand anecdotes, relevant and irrelevant, embroider the work; excursions and digressions of all kinds are the very woof of it, as it were; everything far-fetched or near at hand is interwoven, and yet the complex is a sort of "harmony of colors" which is not less than triumphant.". about Fine.

ROUGH NOTES OF A JOURNEY THROUGH THE WILDERNESS, from Trinidad to Par?, Brazil, by way of the Great Cataracts of the Orinoco, Atabapo, and Rio Negro.

W.H.J. Carter,, London: 1872 - 301 pp. First edition; original, maroon cloth; decorative blind stamped covers; decorative gilt spine; yellow endpapers; fp. plus 16 plates. Binding tight; covers edges rubbed; spine faded, ends chipped, covers lightly faded; interior near fine; see additional images provided. Wickham was notoriously credited with "smuggling" the rubber tree seeds out of Brazil, which, when later planted in Kew, London, enabled botanists to cultivate the rubber tree and sustain its plantation growth, insect free, in Malaysia. The ghost-writer's disclaimer states: "These Rough Notes. . . having been arranged and prepared for the Press without the personal supervision of the Author, may contain some errors, for which he cannot be responsible; but under the circumstances of his absence, all possible care has been given to the undertaking by those engaged in it." The Rough Notes were dictated (by Wickham) to James Hay, British Consul for Par?, in 1871. Quoting Borba 941: "A legend has arisen about Henry Wickham telling how, in agreement with the British Admiralty, he organized an expedition to steal seeds from the rubber tree in the Amazon and send them to Kew Gardens from whence they were dispatched to Ceylon. From these seeds originated the rubber plantations in the East which in consequence brought about the collapse of the wealth of the Amazon. This romantic story is no more than a legend. There has never been any Brazilian law forbidding the sending overseas of rubber tree seeds, nor did the British Admiralty organize any expedition for this purpose. Several consignments of seeds were made at various times by different Englishmen to Kew Gardens and Ceylon. Wickham [arrived in Brazil from Venezuela, traveling down the Rio Negro. [He] lived in Santarem for some years cultivating the land and studying tropical plants. His agricultural experiments failed and he moved on to Guinea and later to Ceylon and the Pacific islands." The illustrations therein are from sketches by Wickham. Quoting A. Smith, in Explorers of the Amazon, 1990, "The book has 'illustrations drawn on the spot by the author,' and one in particular may have fascinated the botanists at Kew: a leaf, pod, and fruit of Hevea brasiliensis. . . this offhand and irritating book concluded with an equally unexplained Report on the Industrial Classes in the Provinces of Par? and Amazonas, Brazil, authored by James Vismes Drummond Hay, H.B. Majesty's Consul at Par? The report is thorough, including such facts as that beef cost tenpence a pound in England against sixpence in Brazil. . .perhaps the Report's publication was a fair exchange. L&#39;oeuvre scientifique de Duchenne de Boulogne. Extract from Arch. d&#39;electricite medicale exp. et clin. 7 (1899). 8vo. [448]-468pp. 242 x 162 mm. Disbound, several leaves loose, light foxing.</p><p> Two letters from the founder of modern neurology in France, best known for his electrophysiological studies of the nerves and muscles; see G-M 614, 624, 4732, 4736, etc. In his first letter, Duchenne notifies his publisher that he will be returning several books lent to him by the Baillieres for the purpose of compiling an unnamed work-possibly the collection of articles published in the early 1870s under the title Contributions a l&#39;Ètude du systeme nerveux et du systeme musculaire. Among the books Duchenne borrowed were a 2-volume work by Jaccoud (possibly his Traite de pathologie interne, 1870-71); a work by Holmes on the diseases of children (possibly Timothy Holmes&#39; Surgical Treatment of the Diseases of Infancy and Childhood, 1868); Vol. III of Francois Longet&#39;s Traite de physiologie (3rd ed., 1868-69); and Leuret and Gratiolet&#39;s Anatomie comparee du systeme nerveux (1839-57). In the second letter Duchenne reminds the Baillieres that the Jaccoud work mentioned in his previous letter had been sent to him in error, and that the BailliËres had billed him twice for the Leuret-Gratiolet set. Accompanying these letters are two articles on Duchenne&#39;s life and scientific work. </p>

Voyage autour du monde? Australie ?Java, Siam, Canton? Pékin, Yeddo. San Francisco

Henri Plon, 1870-, Paris 1872 - Three volumes, octavo, in total 7 folding maps & 38 plates engraved after photographs (5 folding); a very good set in contemporary quarter green morocco. With photographic plates. A very good early mixed set of this extremely popular account of the author's voyage around the world. This popular and well-written account of a long circumnavigation was written by the Marquis de Beauvoir. He arrived in Melbourne in 1866, and travelled extensively in Australia, trekking overland through the eastern states and Van Diemen's Land, and going the entire length of the east coast, heading for Malaya by way of the Great Barrier Reef and Torres Strait. He includes particularly good material on the Victorian goldfields, especially around Ballarat and Bendigo, but there is also a lively account of Melbourne, some thoughtful comments on the Australian aborigines he met in the bush, and a lengthy digression on the Burke and Wills expedition. The good maps are after Erhard and Vuillemin, while the many illustrations include views in Australia and California, with several depictions of Australian aborigines, including "King" Tatambo and his daughter. Fourth edition of volumes I and II, first edition of volume III. The work was begun in 1869. Ferguson concentrates on the Australie volume, and lists copies of the fourth edition of this part in the Mitchell Library and the National Library of Australia. [Attributes: First Edition]

Histoire de la Guerre de 1870-1871

71, 1872. 71, 1872 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A first edition of this beautifully illustrated account of the Franco-Prussian War, dating from the 1870s. First Edition. &#39;Relation illustre de la campagne franco-allemande avec portraits, dessins de batailles, plans, cartes gographiques & topographiques d&#39;aprs des croquis pris sur le thatre mme des vnements&#39;. &#39;Illustrated. . . with portraits, drawings of battles, plans, maps & topographic sketches&#39;. The Franco-Prussian War or Franco-German War, often referred to in France as the War of 1870 (19 July 1870 10 May 1871), was a conflict between the Second French Empire and the Kingdom of Prussia. Prussia was aided by the North German Confederation, of which it was a member, and the South German states of Baden, Wrttemberg and Bavaria. The complete Prussian and German victory brought about the final unification of Germany under King Wilhelm I of Prussia. It also marked the downfall of Napoleon III and the end of the Second French Empire, which was replaced by the French Third Republic. As part of the settlement, the territory of Alsace and part of Lorraine was taken by Prussia to become a part of Germany, and it remained so until the end of World War I when it was returned to France in the Treaty of Versailles. Condition: In a half calf binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, some wear to the extremities and marks to the boards. Front board very tender and likely to become detached. Internally, textblock generally firmly bound although the front free endpapers are attached to the front board. Clean with just the odd spot or mark. Ink signature to front free endpaper.         Boscobel; Or, The Royal Oak

ONT>, 1872. ONT>, 1872 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A scarce edition of Boscobel; Or, The Royal Oak A Tale of the Year 1651, a historical novel by William Harrison Ainsworth. Withillustrations by Rimbault. First edition. In three volumes complete. With a preface dated 1872 to front of volume one, four illustrations to volume one, four to volume two and a further four to volume three. Boscobel Houseis a building in the parish of Boscobel in Shropshire. It has been, at various times; a farmhouse, a hunting lodge, and a holiday home; but it is most famous for its role in the escape of Charles II after the Battle of Worcester in 1651. Today it is managed by English Heritage. William Harrison Ainsworth (1805 - 1882) was an English historical novelist. Ainsworth briefly tried the publishing business, but soon gave it up and devoted himself to journalism and literature. His first success as a writer came with Rookwood in 1834, which features Dick Turpin as its leading character. A stream of thirty-nine novels followed, the last of which appeared in 1881. From 1840 to 1842 he edited Bentley&#39;s Miscellany, from 1842 to 1853, Ainsworth&#39;s Magazine and subsequently The New Monthly Magazine. His Lancashire novels cover altogether 400 years and include The Lancashire Witches, 1848, Mervyn Clitheroe, 1857, and The Leaguer of Lathom. Jack Sheppard, Guy Fawkes, 1841, Old St Paul&#39;s, 1841, Windsor Castle, 1843, and The Lancashire Witches are regarded as his most successful novels. He was very popular in his lifetime and his novels sold in large numbers. Previous owner&#39;s bookplate and ink inscription to front of volume one. Condition: In original cloth bindings. Externally, generally smart but with slight wear to extremities, rubbing and the odd mark to boards. Two hinges tender, two strained. Internally, bindings strained in places with a few pages loosening. Bright but with the odd spot and handling mark. Overall: GOOD.

        HENCE THESE TEARS. A NOVEL

London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1872.. London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1872.. Three volumes. Original medium chocolate brown cloth, side panels intricately decorated in black, spines ruled and lettered in gilt. Errata in first volume. Early ink name in each volume (repeated in pencil), a tiny bit shaken, fore- tips and spine ends rubbed, some foxing early and late, rear inner hinge of volume one cracking a bit (but sound), rear inner hinge of volume two neatly mended; a good, sound set. First edition. One of Lord de Tabley&#39;s four very rare three-volume novels, two of them published pseudonymously, and one other besides this published anonymously: SALVIA RICHMOND (1878). Neither of the anonymous works are recorded in NCBEL. Warren was a prolific poet as well, publishing a number of collections, including several under the pseudonyms &#39;George F. Preston&#39; and &#39;William Lancaster&#39;. His earliest collection was a collaborative volume with a close Oxford friend, George Fortescue, whose accidental death in 1859 had a powerful influence on him. He wrote knowledgeably on numismatics, botany, and bookplates, but he temporarily abandoned poetry and drama after the absolute failure of THE SOLDIER&#39;S FORTUNE (1876). John Lane and Watts-Dunton encouraged him to publish a retrospective collection in 1893 and a new collection appeared in 1895, the year of his death. Sadleir had all four of his novels; Wolff had only A SCREW LOOSE. OCLC/Worldcat locates three (or four) sets: UCLA, the British Library (two entries), and the Nat&#39;l Library of Scotland. SADLEIR 3170.

L&#39;Internationale et Le Jacobinisme Au Ban De L&#39;Europe Jacobin Club

Paris - E. Lachaud., 1872. Paris - E. Lachaud., 1872 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Two volumes detailing the activities of the Jacobinmovement during the French Revolution. The Jacobin Club was the most famous and influential political club in the development of the French Revolution, so-named because of the Dominican convent where they met, located in the Rue St. Jacques, Paris. The club originated as the Club Benthorn, formed at Versailles from a group of Breton deputies attending the Estates General of 1789. There were thousands of chapters throughout France, with a membership estimated at 420,000. After the fall of Robespierre the club was closed. The Jacobin movement encouraged sentiments of patriotism and liberty amongst the populace. The movement&#39;s contemporaries, such as Louis XVI, located the effectiveness of the revolutionary movement not in the force and bayonets of soldiers, guns, cannons and shells but by the marks of political power (Schama; 1989; 279). Ultimately, the Jacobins were to control several key political bodies, in particular the Committee of Public Safety and, through it, the National Convention, which was not only a legislature but also took upon itself executive and judicial functions. The Jacobins as a political force were seen as less selfish, more patriotic, and more sympathetic to the Paris Populace (Bosher; 1989; 186). This gave them a position of charismatic authority that was effective in generating and harnessing public pressure, generating and satisfying sans-culotte pleas for personal freedom and social progress. Condition: In half-calf bindings. Externally sound, with some rubbing and some marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Armorial bookplates (&#39;Alington&#39;) and binder&#39;s labels(&#39;Gregg&#39;s Foreign Circulating Library&#39;)to front pastedowns. Pages are bright, but with some scattered light spotting. Overall: VERY GOOD..

        Poems of Felicia Hemans

Edinburgh; London - William Blackwood and Sons, 1872. Edinburgh; London - William Blackwood and Sons, 1872 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An extensive collection of the poetical works of influential poet, Felicia Hemans. Bound in cloth with gilt lettering. There are no engraved plates present. With an engraved frontispiece of the author. Felicia Dorothea Hemans, 1793 - 1835, was an English poet. Hemans&#39;s influence is traceable in nineteenth-century verse, especially in new forms of dramatic lyric. . . Most Victorian editions and reissues of her work omitted her learned notes and long poems, however, and helped to cast her as a parlour poet and the very type of the sentimental poetess. . . Hemans is now recognized by many literary historians as the most notable British poet flourishing between the death of Byron and the rise of Tennyson and the Brownings -ODNB. Condition: The textblock binding is tight and firm. The front inner hinge is strained and the rear inner hinge is slightly strained. There is some wear to the extremities, including some rubbing and discolouration, with sunning to the spine and a small library label. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright. With a Worcester public library label to the front pastedown and ink number to the front free-endpaper. Overall the condition is very good..
