"Blick auf die Alpspitze" originales Ölgemälde auf Malpappe ca. 75x62cm; rechts unten signiert; um 1910 [Maße im etwas lädierten zeitgenössischen Rahmen 90x76cm.]

(a. d. Br. v. 3. August 1872). - Der Schriftsteller und Literarhistoriker Otto Roquette unterrichtete am Blochmannschen Institut in Dresden und stand in freundschaftlichem Kontakt zu Paul Heyse und dem Hause Franz Kuglers.         THE LAKESIDE MEMORIAL OF THE BURNING OF CHICAGO, A.D. 1871

Chicago. 1872.. [4],110pp. plus twelve mounted albumen photographs. Contemporary brown morocco, stamped in gilt, gilt inner dentelles, a.e.g. Some light shelf wear. Internally clean. Near fine. An interesting book with original mounted photographs, produced to commemorate the Chicago fire of 1871. The text gives a history of the fire in a series of essays, each signed by a different author, while the photographs record the devastation in detail. They are juxtaposed with in-text illustrations of the photographed locales before they were ruined by the Great Fire. The final article discusses the Relief Committee and the reponse to the disaster by the community. Others talk in very personal terms about how one person was able to save his home, others burnt out. In human terms a real disaster, and one to which anyone can relate. The text is important because it documents with the advantage of recent memory the impacts of the fire on Chicagoans. The particularly striking element of this work is the photographic record it provides of the Fire. It is clear that these photographs were taken fairly soon after the disaster. The ruins of the Fred, Leiter & Co. store on what it notes as the corner of State and Washington Streets causes the viewer to wonder how someone on foot could navigate the rubble, let alone a carriage driving down the street. The images capture the true scope of the disaster in a way that words cannot. Not in THE TRUTHFUL LENS. Stamped in gilt on the rear board with the name of William H. Warrington, the proprietor of the Chicago company Vulcan Iron Works. Scarce.

        The Martyrdom of Man

London: Trübner & Co., 1872. 8vo. viii, 544 pages. Publisher's original green cloth tooled and titled in gilt to spine. Ownership inscription to front endpaper. Small spot to front board, minor shelf wear and foxing to final leafs, otherwise in very good and original condition, bright, clean, with solid spine. A pleasing, exceedingly scarce volume. Both viscerally contested and exuberantly applauded, immediately upon publication, and for years to follow, this revolutionary and once radical book is seldom seen today, yet is replete with subjects still pertinent, these being the role of Islam, the history of the slave trade, the evolution of mankind, as well as the impact of war, religion, and liberty. Reade's work became reputed as a sort of "substitute bible for secularists," attempting to trace the development of Western civilization in terms analogous to those used in the natural sciences, also presenting philosophies in support of political liberalism and social Darwinism. The secular "universal" history of the Western world, is divided into four chapters titled as follows. "War" discusses the imprisonment of men's bodies, "Religion" that of their minds, "Liberty" likens a history of European politics and intellect, and finally, "Intellect" puts forth a theory on the origin and development of the universe. The concluding chapter provoked enormous controversy, and as such, the book was condemned by several magazines, owing to Reade's "outspoken attack on Christian dogma". Immediately after its release, in 1872 William Gladstone, the former British Prime Minister, denounced the work as one of several "irreligious works" which also included works by Auguste Comte, Herbert Spencer, and David Friedrich Strauss. On the other hand, the book "drew attention to the immense tale of suffering and waste involved in the theory of evolution". V. S. Pritchett lauded The Martyrdom of Man as "the one, the outstanding, dramatic, imaginative historical picture of life, to be inspired by Victorian science". Since Reade had, by Victorian standards, a relatively sympathetic account of African history, the book was also approvingly cited by W. E. B. Du Bois in his books The Negro (1915) and The World and Africa (1947). English-born South African politician and businessman, Cecil Rhodes said that the book "made me what I am". Other admirers included H. G. Wells, Sir Winston Churchill, Harry Johnston, George Orwell, Susan Isaacs, A. A. Milne and his son Christopher Robin, and Michael Foot. In "The Sign of the Four" Holmes describes it as "one of the most remarkable books ever penned". . First Edition. Very Good.

        The Poetical Works

73 - London - Routledge, 1872 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A really nice set of works by Bret Harte. Seven volumes bound in half leather with marble paper-covered boards. Bret Harte (1836-1902), American novelist and poet. He wrote tales of pioneering life in gold rush towns in California, as well as more serious verse. When receiving the news that Dickens had died, Harte wrote a heartfelt tribute, Dickens in Camp, which appeared in the Overland Monthly, a magazine he had strong editorial involvement with. Although very popular in the 1870's and 1880's, Harte's popularity dwindled. Twain would comment thathis writing was insincere. Harte lived much of his later life in Europe and is buried in Surrey. The Fool of Five Forks and Wan Lee are bound together in one volume, as are Thankful Blossom and My Friend the Tramp. The Luck of Roaring Camp has an introduction and glossaryby Tom Hood. Condition: The bindings aretight and firm with the boards and all internal pages securely attached. There is some wear to the extremities includingbumping to the corners, rubbing, fadingandmarks to the leather andboards. The author title labels are present, but the volume titles are lacking. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright withthe occasionalbrown spotorhandling mark. The overallcondition of these volumesis very good..

Bound with: (2) Untersuchungen ueber die embolischen Processe. [8], 112 [2]pp. Folding chromolithographed plate. Berlin: A. Hirschwald, 1872. Together 2 vols. in 1, 8vo. 224 x 152 mm. Half cloth c. 1873, a little rubbed, paper label with library shelf-mark on spine. Lightly browned, otherwise very good. Early owner's signature on flyleaf, library stamps on endpapers, title of first work, and a few other leaves. First Editions. Garrison-Morton 2302 & 3010. Cohnheim, a pupil of Virchow, was one of the foremost pathologists of the 19th century. His work on inflammation, described in (1) above, showed one of the essential characteristics of inflammation to be the passage of blood leucocytes through the capillary walls and their accumulation at the site of the injury. In (2), Cohnheim set forth the doctrine of infarction as the result of occlusion of terminal arteries, overturning the previous theory that the phenomenon was due to capillary occlusion in the region involved.       Launceston: J.S.V Turner, 1872. Octavo, folding frontispiece map, eight plates and four leaves of parochial Launceston advertisements bound at the rear; recently rebound in buckram retaining part of the original publisher's cloth. Aboriginal Mission settlements in Bass Strait. Scarce and informative book containing much information on Aboriginal Mission to the islands north of Tasmania.Marcus Blake Brownrigg (1835-1890) was an Anglican minister who worked for much of his life in Tasmania, earning praise for his ministry to the poor. 'One of Brownrigg's chief interests was the Mission to the Half-Caste on the Islands of Bass Straits, which in fourteen years he visited thirteen times. Among his published records of these trips was The Cruise of the Freak (1872), illustrated by him on stone for lithograph; with the profits from his writings he bought books for the islanders' (ADB).The Freak was a cutter of some nine tons, used by Brownrigg during his many forays into the Bass Strait. Ferguson's notes that 'apart from its historical value this book is a curious specimen of early colonial printing. Some interesting particulars are given of the Aborigines and G. A. Robinson's work among them'. Brownrigg was an artist of some skill, and also a student of homeopathy, which he used to remedy the ills of his poorer parishionersThis copy was inscribed by the author in his later years R.H.D. White (dated Launceston October 1880). Brownrigg passed away a decade later from lingering bronchitis contracted while sailing on the Bass Strait.
