Three ?vignette? watercolours of Indian children

Approximately 8 x 10-1/2 inches image area Original watercolour matted, framed and glazed Considered to be the ?Dean of Desert Artists,? as well as one of the most influential cartoonists of his time, James Swinnerton?s life spanned nearly a century. In addition to painting hundreds of Southwestern desert scenes, Swinnerton was America's first newspaper comic artist and was the creator of numerous series and characters. His long journey was in essence a story of two lives, both defined by distinctive and accomplished legacies ?one of a cartoonist of historical significance and the other of a fine artist devoted to faithfully portraying the subject matter he loved best. On September 19, 1871, the younger James Guilford Swinnerton married a ?winsome, young ? Canadian named Jennie Wise. Four years later their only child, James Guilford Swinnerton Jr., was born. When Jennie died fifteen months later young Jimmy was taken in by his grandparents in San Jose where he remained until his father remarried in 1879. By the age of fifteen Swinnerton's grandparents had become too old to care for him and his dislike for his stepmother too intense to live with. He decided to run away. In 1891 sixteen year old Jimmy Swinnerton enrolled in the Mark Hopkins School of Design, the San Francisco Art Association?s art school. In retrospect the school?s 1891 class was a remarkable lot. Swinnerton?s classmates included eventual Western art icons Maynard Dixon and Edward Borein and landscape painter Xavier Martinez. Also present was Homer Davenport, who would later rise to fame as a political cartoonist. Dixon, unwilling to deal with the abrasive personality of the school?s director Arthur F. Matthews, left after just a few months, but not before developing and maintaining a lifelong friendship with Swinnerton. The two frequently made sketching trips together into northern Arizona and the Colorado Desert. By chance, some of his caricatures were seen by William Randolph Hearst. Impressed by what he saw, Hearst hired Swinnerton as a sketch artist for The San Francisco Examiner in 1892. After hearing that Swinnerton was going to work for a newspaper, William Keith allegedly refused to ever speak to him again. At The Examiner Swinnerton?s caricature skills naturally led him to cartooning. Swinnerton?s drawings soon appeared throughout the paper in sections ranging from the editorial to the sports pages, but his most well known figures were the ?Weather Bears,? sketches of bear cubs which appeared on The Examiner?s daily weather report. Eventually Swinnerton began drawing images of small children to accompany the bears, and then began placing two frames together connected by a banner which spanned the page Fine condition Signed by Swinnerton in ink lower right

        Chirurgie der Nieren

Ferdinand Enke Erlangen: Ferdinand Enke, 1871. The Beginning of Modern Surgery on the KidneySimon, Gustav (1824-76). Chirurgie der Nieren. 2 vols. in 1, 8vo. viii, 89 [1]; x, 314 [2]pp. 9 lithographed plates (incl. 3 chromolithographs); wood-engraved text illustrations. Erlangen: Enke, 1871 (Vol. I); Stuttgart: Enke, 1876 (Vol. II). 234 x 152 mm. Modern half morocco, marbled boards, original printed wrappers bound in. Light foxing but fine. First Edition. Garrison-Morton 4214. The era of modern urological surgery began in 1869, when Gustav Simon performed the first carefully planned nephrectomy; his patient was a woman suffering from ureterovaginal fistula caused by a botched ovariotomy. After writing a brief (two-page) notice of the operation in 1870 (see G-M 4213), Simon prepared a detailed illustrated account which he published as Volume I of his Chirurgie der Nieren. This volume contains two lithographed plates, the first a schematic drawing of the patient's injury, and the second an unusually artistic rendition (probably from a photograph) of the postoperative patient standing in front of a mirror displaying her surgical scars. The second volume of Chirurgie der Nieren, issued five years after the first, deals with the subject of kidney surgery in general, discussing operations on both injured and diseased kidneys. This volume, over three times as long as its predecessor, contains seven plates (three in color), showing a gunshot injury to the kidney, renal calculus and hypertrophy, and pre- and post-operative pictures of a case of hydronephrosis successfully cured by surgery.         Hermione.

Sorgspel. Af författaren till "I Rom" och "Den fredlöse". Stockholm, I. Marcus, 1871. 95,(1) s. Zetterlund I:3.

Anglo-American Atlantic yacht race of 1870. Start of the Yachts Dauntless and Cambria from Queenstown for New York on the 4th. July

London: Published by Wm. Foster, 25 May, 1871. Tinted lithograph, finished by hand, drawn on stone by Dutton after "a painting by R.L. Stopford", sheet size: 20 x 27 3/8 inches. Fine condition. A dramatic scene illustrating the start of the Trans-Atlantic race of 1870, by the celebrated maritime painter Thomas Dutton. Thomas Dutton was one of the greatest nineteenth century maritime painters. His emotive works display a genuine love of the sea and his careful depiction of detail provides a wonderful record of the important vessels of the age.The 108-foot Cambria, owned by James Ashbury of the Royal Harwich Yacht Club , raced the Dauntless, owned by James Gordon Bennett of the New York Yacht Club, from Queenstown, Ireland, to New York on 4 July 1870. The Cambria arrived first, making the crossing in 23 days, 5 hours 17 minutes and 15 seconds, just under two hours ahead of the Dauntless. After recuperating for 11 days the Cambria took part in the first true Americas Cup race. She competed against a field of 23 American yachts, and lost to the Magic by 40 minutes, finishing in 10th place overall. Dutton expertly captures the exciting moment of the start of the Trans-Atlantic race, and shows the great beauty and style of this remarkable ship.

Contributions to Terrestrial Magnetism; a very rare near complete set of 14 series parts [of 15; no part 14],

[plus; Sir Charles Shadwell: A Contribution to Terrestrial Magnetism; being the Record of Observations.. made during the Voyage of HMS Iron Duke to China and Japan, 1871-75, 1876], complete with 29 fine engraved maps most of which very large and folding, with 2 charts, (with very small and neat embossed uninked library name, virtually invisible), as extracted from The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, 1840-1877. Quarto, total of 835pp [+10pp Shadwell's supplement], variously paginated. First Editions. An extremely rare, a very good and almost complete set of Sabine's epochal papers on terrestrial magnetism as they originally appeared in the Philosophical Transactions over a period of 37 years. London, [The Royal Society], 1840-1877. * "THE GREAT REMAINING PHYSICAL MYSTERY SINCE NEWTON'S WORK ON GRAVITATION." * "Edward Sabine (1788 -1883), Anglo-Irish astronomer, geophysicist, 30th President of the Royal Society. In 1818 he took part in Captain John Ross's first Arctic expedition. As the expedition's appointed astronomer, Sabine was told to assist Ross "in making such observations as may tend to the improvement of geography and navigation, and the advancement of science in general." Sabine was a diligent and careful scientist who stressed the need for the multiplication and repetition of observations, believing that a true understanding of terrestrial magnetism would only be arrived at after exhaustive observations had been made on a global scale. The following year (1819) he returned to the Arctic as a member of Parry's expedition in search of the Northwest Passage. During this expedition, Sabine noted that changes in magnetic intensity had taken place since his previous visit. He attributed such changes to either a fluctuation in the Earth's magnetic intensity or the shifting positions of the terrestrial magnetic poles. There was intense interest in figuring out what many called "the great remaining physical mystery since Newton's work on gravitation." By the beginning of the nineteenth century, it was widely recognized that the Earth's magnetic field was continually changing over time in a complicated way that interfered with compass readings. To solve this mystery once and for all, a number of physicists recommended that a magnetic survey of the entire globe be carried out. Suitable locations for the observatories were selected in both hemispheres and representations were made to despatch an expedition to the Southern Ocean to carry out a magnetic survey of the Antarctic. In the spring of 1839, the government approved the scheme. Observatories were to be established at Toronto, St. Helena, Cape Town, Tasmania and at stations to be determined by the East India Company, while other nations were invited to co-operate. Sabine was appointed to superintend the entire operation. Thousands of painstaking observations were taken by the staff - sometimes as frequently as every five minutes. These observations were all carefully scrutinised by Sabine back in Britain. In 1852, Sabine recognized from the Toronto records that magnetic variations could be divided into a regular diurnal cycle and an irregular portion. The irregularity correlated very closely with fluctuations in the number of sunspots. Sabine was the first to recognize that solar disturbances affected the Earth's magnetic environment. On 6 April 1852 he announced that the Sun's 11-year sunspot cycle was "absolutely identical" to the Earth's 11-year geomagnetic cycle. Throughout the 1840s and 1850s, Sabine continued to superintend the operation of magnetic observatories throughout the British Empire. The result was Sabine's magnum opus: as complete a magnetic survey of the globe as was then humanly possible." - Wikipedia

        MIDDLEMARCH

1871. hardcover. <center><b>MIDDLEMARCH in the original serial parts in wrappers</b></center> Eliot, George [pseudonym of Mary Ann Evans]. MIDDLEMARCH. A Study of Provincial Life. [In Eight Serial Parts.] Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1871 (for Part I; 1872 for Parts III, V & VII). Original light green wrappers decorated in black, with later matching light green paper spines. 8 parts. <p>First Edition, in the original eight serial parts, of George Eliot&#39;s famous "study of provincial life." Part of the novel follows Dorothea Brooke, </p> <p><?ms_indent>idealistic and ardent, who seeks dedication to some worthy cause. She believes she has found it in her marriage to Edward Casaubon, an elderly pedant who is devoted to the immense task of writing a &#39;Key to all the Mythologies&#39;. She is rapidly disillusioned; he spends their honeymoon on tireless research...</?ms_indent></p> <p>Part of the novel also follows Tertius Lydgate,</p> <p><?ms_indent>the ambitious doctor who yearns for scientific discovery and who strives... for reforms in medical practice. He falls in love with Rosamund Vincy, and discovers too late that his wife is interested in nothing but the effect her person makes...</?ms_indent></p> <p>MIDDLEMARCH is often considered George Eliot&#39;s greatest achievement:</p> <p><?ms_indent>The canvas is broad, and the characters numerous; the novel is one of the finest in the language and George Eliot&#39;s greatest work. Her control of the manifold strands of her story never weakens and neither does her obervation of a provincial town. She knew that sort of world intimately... [CGEL]</?ms_indent></p> <p>Serialization of MIDDLEMARCH began the year after Charles Dickens&#39;s death, and the idea of serial parts was now dying too. In an effort to save the practice (and the extra profits, from issuing a novel both in parts and in book form), publishers in the 1870s came up with this last-ditch effort of issuing novels in eight wrappered five shilling parts (paginated for its ultimate four-volumes-in-cloth format). Although MIDDLEMARCH was a commercial success, this idea of fewer-but-larger (and pricier) serial parts was a complete failure; in 1875-1876 Anthony Trollope&#39;s THE PRIME MINISTER and George Eliot&#39;s DANIEL DERONDA came out in the same eight-part / four-volume format, but with that the experiment ended.</p> <p>This set of parts, complete with front and rear wrappers in place, was bound up in four half-leather volumes, soon after publication. The eight parts have recently been "liberated" from those old bindings, returning to their original-issue state. They bear several effects from that binding-up: the ads and the next-book notice slips were not preserved (but the only errata slip, in Part IV, <i>is</i> present); the paper spines were not preserved so each part is now backed in matching-but-unprinted light green paper; and the margins of the pages and wrappers were slightly trimmed down at the time of rebinding (not affecting any print outside or inside, but in some instances touching the front wrapper decoration). Also, whereas the set described by Parrish has all four sets of preliminary leaves in the final part, this set has them properly distributed in Parts I, III, V and VII. (The rear wrapper for Part I is variant from the one described by Parrish, as was the case with the Jackson set cited below<i></i>.)</p><p>With the exception of the factors noted above, and light pencil marks alongside occasional passages, this set is in FINE CONDITION. Because the wrappers spent more than a century protected within bindings, they are in much better condition than if they had not been. MIDDLEMARCH in parts has become not just the most difficult of George Eliot&#39;s novels to find, but one of the rarest of all Victorian literature. After decades of no sets surfacing, two nice-but-not-fine sets recently did: the Self copy realized $68,500.00 in 2009, and the Jackson copy realized $56,250.00 in 2011. This set is not in that category of originality, but it <i>is</i> a seldom-occurring opportunity to acquire an attractive set for a fraction of the price. Parrish pp 29-33; also see Sadleir 815 and Wolff 2059. Housed in two clamshell cases with calfskin labels.</p> BOOKS WRITTEN BY WOMEN (Sumner & Stillman Code:12084)

The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex

London: John Murray,, 1871. In Two Volumes. With Illustrations. 2 volumes, octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spines gilt, sides with panels blocked in blind, blue coated endpapers. In a green cloth folding case. Engravings throughout. Ownership inscription to each front blank. Cloth very lightly rubbed, a lovely set. First edition, first issue with the errata on the verso of the title leaf of vol. II. Here the word "evolution" appears for the first time in any of Darwin&#39;s works, preceding its appearance in the sixth edition of The Origin of Species the following year. Darwin had hoped that one of his supporters might tackle the thorny question of human evolution, but was forced to face the logic of his own theory himself. Darwin deviated from his ostensible subject of mankind to describe sexual selection in the animal kingdom, enabling him to answer those who saw peacock tails as an expression of divine aesthetics. Darwin also set out a definite family tree for humans, tracing their affinity with the Old World monkeys, and laid out his views on the evolutionary origins of morality and religion. "The Descent, understood by Darwin as a sequel to the Origin, was written with a maturity and depth of learning that marked Darwin&#39;s status as an élite gentleman of science" (ODNB).

Housed in a half-green straight-grain morocco clamshell case. No copies have appeared at auction since ABPC began to index results in 1923.Created and published in the immediate wake of high political drama in France - the Paris Commune aka the Fourth French Revolution, when the French defeat in the Franco-Prussian War led to the fall of Emperor Louis Napoleon III&#39;s Second French Empire, the establishment of the Third French Republic, and near immediate popular workers&#39; ("communards") insurrection in concert with the citizen&#39;s National Guard against the forces of Versailles which, though Republican, held direct rule over Paris. The Communards established self-rule in the city and became, in effect, the local city council from March 18, 1871 through May 28, 1871 when Versailles government forces defeated the armed Communards and local National Guard in the streets during La Semaine Sanglante, "the Bloody Week," and left sections of Paris in ruins. L&#39;Eclipse, publisher of this series by Cham, was a weekly newspaper founded in 1868 and edited by François Polo, a Republican who published pamphlets against the Emperor Napoleon III yet was no sympathizer of Republican socialists who were blamed for excess and the short-lived but no less deadly (with an estimated 10,000-50,000 killed) civil war. Repeatedly censored or banned L&#39;Eclipse endured through 1876.Of Amédée de Noé (1819-1879), &#148;known as Cham (that is, Ham, the son of Noah)&#133;it was said that he had &#145;an idea a day&#146; for Le charivari. A good proportion of his thousands of lithographs were gathered into albums. His contributions to the Album du siège (173), in which Daumier was his collaborator, are typical of his work&#148; (Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book, pp. 155-156).1.         Kritische Geschichte der Nationalökonomie und des Socialismus.

Berlin, 1871. 8vo. Cont. full cloth , minor bumping to corners, otherwise nice and clean, also internally. XII, 591, (1) pp.. First edition of Dühring's magnificent and highly influential work on national economy and socialism, his anti-Marxist politicl-economical work, which hugely influenced the socialists of the late 20th century and again the anti-marxists of the 1920'ies and 30'ies. Among his readers could be found such persons as Johann Most, Friedrich Wilhelm Fritzsche, Eduard Bernstein, August Bebel, etc., and the present work was one of the three works by Dühring that Menger had in his library, and one of the six works by Dühring that Nietzsche had in his library. Furthermore, naturally, both Marx and Engels read the work and criticized it severely, among other places in the grand attack upon him and his anti-Marxism, "Anti-Dühring" from 1876.The influential German philosopher and economist Eugen Karl Dühring (1833 - 21 September 1921) was a character of great controversy and character. "The reasons why this significant thinker should have met with little except rebuffs are to be found mainly in a temperament that was at the same time generous and aggressive at that, by ferocious attacks, made enemies of practically all the individuals and groups he noticed at all. He experienced a revival, however, in the 1920's." (Schumpeter, History of Economic Analysis, p. 509). Due to the present work, in which he attacked both his academic colleague and rival, a leading political economist at the time and professor of political economy in Berlin from 1870, Adolf Wagner, as well as German universities and their professoriates as such, Dühring was warned by the Ministry, that he would be removed from his position, should he do such a thing again. This, of course he did (in 1876, in "Der Weg zu höheren Berufsbildung..."), and his contract was not renewed in 1876, causing him to lose his job

        PRINCESS AND THE GOBLIN

1871. Very Good. MACDONALD, George. THE PRINCESS AND THE GOBLIN. New York: George Routledge and Sons, 1871. First American edition of MacDonald's second full-length fairy tale, following At the Back of the North Wind, which had appeared in the preceding year. 30 wood-engraved illustrations by Arthur Hughes. Octavo. iv,315 pp. Publisher's green cloth binding with pictorial decorations on spine and front cover, based on text illustrations by Hughes, in gilt and black. Off-white coated endpapers. All edges gilt. Binder's ticket ('Bound by Burns & Co.') on rear pastedown. The decoration of the American binding is almost identical with the Strahan & Co. first-edition binding, including the crescent moon and flaming torch in gilt outside of the front cover circle, and with the publisher's name gilt-stamped at the base of the spine - only in this case it is Routledge. The difference occurs on the spine where the entire title is gilt-stamped, as opposed to the Strahan copies on which the the word 'goblin' is printed in black. The binding is rubbed along edges, lightly abraded on surfaces, and is slightly askew. The bookblock is sound but has been glued into the case slightly lower than it should be, by about 5 mm. Pencil gift inscription at head of title-page with the date (1876) written in ink below it. Text leaves are clean but for some light foxing to a few pages near the beginning. A rare edition, the existence of which was uncertain, and the 1872 edition being cited as the first. In about very good condition. (Shaberman 48).

Die periodische Gesetzmässigkeit der chemischen Elemente; (Aus dem Russischen von Felix Wreden). (On the periodical law of the chemical elements).

Leipzig und Heidelberg, C.F. Winter'sche Verlagshandlung, (1871) 1872. Contemp. green marbled boards. Minor scratches to boards. Titlelabel to spine: Annalen der Pharmacie VIII Suppl. Band. In Annalen der Chemie und Pharmacie. Hrsg. und Redigiert von Friedrich Wöhler, Justus Liebig und Hermann Kopp, VIII. Supplementband. Pp. (4),392 pp. (entire volume offered). 2 stamps to lower part of titlepage. Mendelejeff's paper pp. 133-229, 2 tables on p. 149 a. 151. Internally fine and clean.. First printing of the first German translation of this milestone paper, ONE OF THE GREAT CLASSICS OF CHEMISTRY, in which Mendelejeff first coined the word periodic, and in which he, for the first time, presented his great discovery of the periodicity of the elements in its full and complete form. At the same time the paper is the first to present his discoveries in a western language. In the paper he described and predicted the properties of a number of undiscovered elements - three of them were discovered in his lifetime. His periodic table was more complete than any of the preceding ones, and more thoroughly founded on experiment. The periodicity of the elements he himself formulated as Elements placed according to the value of their atomic weights present a clear periodicity of properties. The offered paper is the German translation of his paper which was issued in Journal of the Russian Chemical Society, vol. 3, pp. 25-56, the same journal in which he first announced his discovery (vol. 1, pp.66-77 (1869) ).In March 1871, two years after his discovery of the law, Mendeleev first named it periodic. That summer he published in Justus Liebigs Annalen der Chemie his article Die periodische Gesetzmässigkeit der chemischen Elemente. - the paper offered - which he later characterized as the best summary of my views and ideas on the periodicity of the elements and the original after which so much was written later about this system. This was the main reason for my scientific fame, because much was confirmed - much later.''(DSB IX, p. 289-90)Lothar Meyer and Dimitri Mendeleev independently discovered the periodic system, but Meyer did not publish this work until after the appearance of Mendeleev's first paper on the subject in 1869. His table was very similar to that of Mendeleev, but it contained some improvements and was, perhaps, influential in causing some of the revisions made by Mendeleev in the second version of his table, published in 1870. In general, Meyer was more impressed by the periodicity of the physical properties of the elements, while Medeleev saw more clearly the chemical consequences of the periodic law.(Source Book in Chemistry, p. 434).Horblitt, 100 Books famous in Science (the Russian paper 1869) No 74. - Dibner, Heralds of Science No 48 (only the later book of 1891) - Partington IV: pp. 891-897. - Source Book in Chemistry pp. 442 ff. - PMM: 407 (under Moseley). - Neville Historical Chemical Library II: p. 162 (only the French edition from 1879)

        Biography of Victoria C. Woodhull

Published at the Office of The Golden Age New York: Published at the Office of The Golden Age. 1871. First. First edition. 12mo. 35,(1)pp. Stitched gray printed wrappers. Soiling to the wrappers and tiny chips to the corners of the wrapper and first two leaves, very good or better. Woodhull was a leader of the American women's suffrage movement, and an espouser of women's rights, free love, and labor reforms. She and her sister were the first women Wall Street stockbrokers, and she was the first female candidate for President of the United States. Woodhull came to Tilton's aid in 1872 when she published in her own magazine, Woodhull & Claflin's Weekly, the scandalous allegations of the adulterous relationship that the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher (who had railed against Woodhull's free love philosophy) was having with Tilton's wife. This precipitated what was widely regarded as the sensational "trial of the century" when Beecher was charged with adultery. An important early biography compiled from notes gathered by Woodhull's third husband, the sanguineously named spiritualist Colonel Blood, published by the prominent abolitionist and reformer the year before Woodhull announced her candidacy for President. Exceptionally uncommon. OCLC locates two copies (University of Michigan, and in the Jon A. Lindseth Suffrage Collection at Cornell). .
