A collection of 17 broadsides, 2-page publications, and pamphlets.

Guatemala: Various publishers/presses, 1870–79. All items folio. For Guatemala the 1870s were years of a Liberal government and 19th-century Liberal reforms: confiscation of Church property and the concomitant excloistering of nuns and monks, improved sanitation, improved supervision of food handling, economic reforms, securing a free press, bringing telegraphy and the railroad to the nation, and improving the police force and public education.    The decade began with the 1871 overthrow of Vicente Cerna Sandoval's Conservative regime and then saw other military actions including the putting down of the 1872 attempted coup d'etat by the recently ousted Conservatives; and because that failed plot was supported by the government of Honduras, Guatemala went to war with its neighbor.    The collection touches on war, politics, reform, public health, and reaction to reform. The 1870s saw changes in the printing industry in Guatemala; printing could be done on thinner paper and this collection bears witness to that, with some chipping at edges, some brittleness over all, and some items damp-damaged with loss of blank areas (only). Over all, good to very good condition, with a very few exceptions.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1870 - 1870 Wisden Original Wrappers

1870. On offer here is a very rare 1870 Wisden still in it's original wrappers and in very good overall condition. As can be seen from the photographs, the front and rear wrappers are a little marked - mainly foxing. A facsimile spine has been added to the book in recent times. That repair was not carried out by me, but I suspect that at one time the book was rebound in hard boards and at some stage the book has been taken out of the boards and a facsimile spine attached. Internally, the title page and the first few pages have some foxing as do the last couple of pages but otherwise the contents are in excellent, clean, unmarked condition - most unusual for a book of this vintage. Overall, a really nice example.

Les champignons de la France].[Paris, ca. 1869]. Imperial oblong 4to (25 x 35.5 cm). An album containing 60 original mycological (mushroom) drawings in brown ink and coloured gouaches (light brown, orange, yellow, red, blue, green, dark brown, black). Sewn and loosely inserted in later(?) gray-brown paper wrappers.

      - Cf. Myko Libri 427; Nissen, BBI 404; Stafleu & Cowan 1229. A complete set of 61 drawings (about 300 figures) of about 110 species of mushrooms, prepared as models for the 60 chromolithographic plates in François-Simon Cordier’s Les champignons de la France (Paris, Jules Rothschild, 1870; printed by Adolphe Lainé). The drawings are unsigned, but the book notes that they were drawn from life by "A.D. Cordier" (title-page) or "Mlle Delville-Cordier" (pp. ix-x). This was the author's adopted daughter Aimée-Eugénie Delville-Cordier (1822 or 1826-1899).François-Simon Cordier (1797-1874), a Paris physician, mycologist and founding member and president of the Société Botanique de France, published several books on mushrooms beginning in 1826. Les champignons de France is his most important work. We find no record of his ever having married, but in 1852 he adopted Aimée-Eugénie. One must wonder if she was either Cordier's biological daughter or his mistress's daughter from an earlier relation, but we have found no further information. She showed two portraits at the 1855 Exposition des Beaux-Arts and had a successful career as a portrait painter. In very good condition.

Jahrhunderts standen. Zudem wurde vor allem sein Frühwerk durch die Nachtbilder eines Eduard Schleichs des Älteren maßgeblich beeinflußt.         Diary of a Journey through the Sinai Peninsula and Arabia in 1914.

21 cm x 14 cm. 78 pages. Original Hardcover. With 16 plates and external fold-out map. Good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Only slightly foxed. Probably the author's own copy with underlining and annotations with penciled, manuscript corrections throughout the book Brockbank was born into a wealthy Mancunian Quaker steel family in 1870, and was educated at Cambridge. He made several trips to the Middle East in search of the Holy Land of the scriptures, on this occasion spending exactly five weeks and a day under canvas in the Desert of the Exodus and Arabia, and during the time covered 400 miles on camel and 700 miles on horseback, from Port Said to Jerusalem. Despite Brockbanks evangelicalism he founded a working-class chapel, Ivy Cottage, at Didsbury in 1893 which still thrives today his diary-form narrative is more chattily descriptive than preachy, and is much enhanced by the plates from the authors own photographs. An interesting and well-produced privately-published travel journal.

        Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827).

Original 19th century Gouache after an 1870 painting by C. Jäger. 48 x 34,5 cm. Outer margins slightly frayed only. Extraordinary work with fresh impression of the signature face of this timeless composer. Gouache, also spelled guache, is a type of paint consisting of pigment, a binding agent (usually gum arabic), and sometimes added inert material, designed to be used in an opaque method. It also refers to paintings that use this opaque method. The name derives from the Italian guazzo. Gouache differs from watercolor in that the particles are larger, the ratio of pigment to water is much higher, and an additional, inert, white pigment such as chalk is also present. This makes gouache heavier and more opaque, with greater reflective qualities. (Wikipedia). Ludwig van Beethoven (baptised 17 December 1770 26 March 1827) was a German composer and pianist. A crucial figure in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in Western art music, he remains one of the most famous and influential of all composers. His best known compositions include 9 symphonies, 5 concertos for piano, 32 piano sonatas, and 16 string quartets. He also composed other chamber music, choral works (including the celebrated Missa Solemnis), and songs. Born in Bonn, then the capital of the Electorate of Cologne and part of the Holy Roman Empire, Beethoven displayed his musical talents at an early age and was taught by his father Johann van Beethoven and Christian Gottlob Neefe. During his first 22 years in Bonn, Beethoven intended to study with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and befriended Joseph Haydn. Beethoven moved to Vienna in 1792 and began studying with Haydn, quickly gaining a reputation as a virtuoso pianist. He lived in Vienna until his death. In about 1800 his hearing began to deteriorate, and by the last decade of his life he was almost totally deaf. He gave up conducting and performing in public but continued to compose many of his most admired works come from this period. (Wikipedia)

        Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 - 1791).

Original 19th century Gouache after an 1870 painting by C. Jäger. 44 x 36,5 cm. Outer margins slightly frayed only. Extraordinary work with some minor repairs. Just like the Beethoven Gouache we also offer by this gifted artist, a very fresh impression of this wonderful musical inspirer. (Wikipedia).Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (27 January 1756 5 December 1791), baptised as Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart, was a prolific and influential composer of the Classical era. Mozart showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. At 17, he was engaged as a court musician in Salzburg, but grew restless and travelled in search of a better position, always composing abundantly. While visiting Vienna in 1781, he was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He chose to stay in the capital, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years in Vienna, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, and operas, and portions of the Requiem, which was largely unfinished at the time of his death. The circumstances of his early death have been much mythologized. He was survived by his wife Constanze and two sons. He composed over 600 works, many acknowledged as pinnacles of symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral music. He is among the most enduringly popular of classical composers, and his influence on subsequent Western art music is profound Beethoven composed his own early works in the shadow of Mozart, and Joseph Haydn wrote that "posterity will not see such a talent again in 100 years."         Stanford's Geological Map of London shewing the Superficial Deposits. Compiled by J.B. Jordan of the Mining Record Office.

Edward Stanford,, London, 1870 - London Geology Edward Stanford (1827-1904) was a highly successful publisher, known for his accurate maps of London. He began his career working for Trelawny Saunders, an enterprising mapmaker who supplied a daily weather chart for the Great Exhibition. Stanford started his own business in 1853, was elected a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society the following year and set about expanding the cartographical aspect of the firm. Stanford?Äôs great rival was James Wyld, and both publishers produced a geological map of the entire London area in 1870. The impact of the Ordnance Survey and contemporary interest in geology led the Superintendent of the OS to authorise Henry de la Beche, the Vice-President of the Geological Society to found the Ordnance Geological Survey (now known as the British Geological Survey) in 1835. A decade later, the Geological Survey Act was passed which mandated a survey of the entire country, and the OGS produced several of the area around London. This map was compiled for Stanford by James B. Jordan (1838-1915), who had worked for the Mining Records Office and the OGS. Jordan used OGS surveys and the maps of Robert Mylne and William Whitaker as sources; the second edition of the map tells the viewer that it was ?Äòsurveyed principally by William Whitaker?Äô, a fellow member of the OGS. The present example is the first edition. The key at the top identifies the different types of soil deposits and geological formations found in the Greater London area. Classic Confederate General E. Lee cabinet card photo

n.p.: , ca. 1870. n.p., ca. 1870. 3.75" x 5.5". "Cabinet Card of Robert E. Lee in his classic portrait image. 3.75"" x 5.5"" set on a card to a dimension of 4"" x 6.5""Produced by Kottman portraits, Altoona, Pa. with full photographer description covering the verso. Slightly grubby with a few very faded stains. Signed in plate.Owing to the larger image size, the cabinet card steadily increased in popularity during the second half of the 1860s and into the 1870s, replacing the carte de visite as the most popular form of portraiture. The cabinet card was large enough to be easily viewed from across the room when typically displayed on a cabinet, which is probably why they became known as such in the vernacular. However, when the renowned Civil War photographer Mathew Brady first started offering them to his clientele towards the end of 1865, he used the trademark ""Imperial Carte-de-Visite."" Whatever the name, the popular print format joined the photograph album as a fixture in the late 19th-century Victorian parlor.A wonderful example of this important historical Confederate General during the U.S. Civil War who led southern forces against the Union Army. His battles climaxed with the three-day stand-off, known as the Battle of Gettysburg, which almost destroyed his army, ending Lee's invasion of the North and helping to turn the war around for the Union. This beginning of the end continued when by the summer of 1864 Ulysses S. Grant gained the upper hand, decimating much of Richmond, the Confederate's capital, and Petersburg. By early 1865 the fate of the war was clear, a fact driven home on April 2 when Lee was forced to abandon Richmond. A week later, a reluctant and despondent Lee surrendered to Grant at a private home in Appomattox, Virginia.Lee has been quoted as having said, ""I suppose there is nothing for me to do but go and see General Grant,"" he told an aide. ""And I would rather die a thousand deaths."" By the end of the war, Lee was saved from being hanged as a traitor by a forgiving Lincoln and Grant, and returned home to his family in April 1865"

Artwork - Set of 46 Heraldic Shields in Watercolour - Medieval Coat of Arms of Notable Barons and Noblemen Including Six Magna Carta Sureties

England, 1870. England, circa 1870-1890. Forty-six (46) hand drawn and hand painted coats of arms, watercolour on heavy cardstock, each cut in the shape of a shield, each with three small brass grommets for a hanging display. Each one measures approximately 8,5 x 22 cm, most ancestries are identified with the artist's manuscript caption to upper front margin; the remainder are inscribed to verso. Occasional indication of moisture or slight fading to colours, otherwise the lot in very good condition, a pleasing and knowledgeable rendering of armorial art. Provenance: From the Barningham Rectory in Norfolk. A clever and atypical illustration of English medieval heraldry created for peerage and baronetage, beautifully executed by a nineteenth century historian artist, numerous distinguished ancestries and notable individuals are represented in this lot. Evinced by some of the obscure armorial details illustrated, the artist was learned in Britain's ancient heraldry and armorial bearings. Representing participants of the Magna Carta, are the arms of the following men who were appointed members of the Council of Twenty-Five Barons: [Twenty-five barons were appointed to secure the observance of Magna Carta charter, signed by King John of England at Runnymede on 15 June 1215.] Sir Robert de Ros, or de Roos, Baron of Helmsley (circa 1170-72 - 1227), who married Isabel of Scotland, daughter of William I the Lion King of Scotland and Avenal. [Baron de Ros is one of the most ancient baronial titles in the Peerage of England.] Robert de Vere, 3rd Earl of Oxford (after circa 1165 - before 25 October 1221), hereditary Master Chamberlain of England, son of Aubrey de Vere, 1st Earl of Oxford, and Agnes of Essex. Together with other Magna Carta barons, he was excommunicated as a rebel by Pope Innocent III on 16 December 1215, and joined them in offering the crown to Prince Louis of France. The noble Bigod family, either Roger Bigod (circa 1144-50 - 1221), 2nd Earl of Norfolk; or Hugh Bigod (circa 1182 - 1225), 3rd Earl of Norfolk; both of whom were members of the elite twenty-five barons. Robert Fitzwalter (died 9 December 1235), the leader of the baronial opposition against King John, feudal baron of Little Dunmow, Essex, and constable of Baynard's Castle, in London. He was taken prisoner by King Philip II of France and forced to pay a heavy ransom. Saer de Quincy, 1st Earl of Winchester (circa 1170 - 1219), a prominent military and diplomatic figure in both the kingdoms of Scotland and England, and one of the leaders of the baronial rebellion against King John of England. Richard de Clare, 3rd Earl of Hertford, 6th Lord of Clare, 6th lord of Tonbridge, 5th Lord of Cardigan (circa 1153 - 1217), a powerful Norman nobleman with vast lands in England and Wales, who played a leading part in the negotiations for Magna Carta, as well as being one of the twenty five sureties. Especially fascinating examples and historic figures: The attributed arms of Edward the Confessor (1003 - 1066), being a blue shield charged with a gold cross and five gold birds, which appears to have been suggested by heralds in the time of Henry III of England (Boutell, 18) based on a coin minted in Edward's reign (Neubecker, 30). [Attributed arms are Western European coats of arms given retrospectively to persons who died before the start of the age of heraldry in the latter half of the 12th century. Arms were assigned to the knights of the Round Table, and then to biblical figures, to Roman and Greek heroes, and to kings and popes who had not historically borne arms (Pastoreau 1997a, 258). Each author could attribute different arms for the same person, but the arms for major figures soon became fixed. Arms were given to many kings predating heraldry, including Edward the Confessor and William I of England.] Arms of Sir Robert Walpole (1676 - 1745), 1st Earl of Orford, Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury from 1721-1742, comprising a fesse bearing three cross-crosslets of the field, between two chevrons sable. On this model, the artist has included a lion passant, also known as a lion of England, in the upper left corner, suggesting that Sir Walpole was granted an 'augmentation of arms' from the monarchy for his excellent political service. Regarded as the de facto first Prime Minister of Great Britain and one of her greatest politicians, holding the record as the longest serving Prime Minister in British history, he was related to many of the most eminent families of Norfolk. A change in armorials for the Percy lineage is illustrated in a quartered shield which bears in two sections the arms of Percy ancient being a row of yellow fusils or lozenges on a blue background, and in the other two sections the arms of Percy modern being a yellow background and a striking blue lion rampant. It was magnate Henry de Percy, 1st Baron Percy of Alnwick (1273 - 1314) who around 1294-1295 made the change. In 1293 Henry came into his inheritance of estates in Sussex and Yorkshire, including Topcliffe Castle, the ancient family seat. In 1294 he married Eleanor, daughter of the Earl of Arundel. He then proceeded to change the family coat of arms, to emphasize his royal and noble connections, and to mark his ambition. In 1309 he purchased Alnwick Castle from Antony Bek, Bishop of Durham, founding a dynasty of northern warlords. He rebelled against King Edward II over the issue of Piers Gaveston and was imprisoned for a few months. The coat of arms of Thomas of Brotherton, 1st Earl of Norfolk (1300 - 1338), the fifth son of King Edward I (1272-1307), and the eldest child by his second wife Margaret of France, the daughter of Philip III of France. He was, therefore, a younger half-brother of King Edward II (1307-1327) and a full brother of Edmund, Earl of Kent. He occupied the office of Earl Marshal of England. The armorial ensign of Pentney Priory, an Augustinian priory founded circa 1130 by Robert de Vaux, at Pentney in the district of King's Lynn and West Norfolk. In 2012 English Heritage granted £200,000 for emergency repairs to the crumbling masonry of the priory's flint-built gatehouse which stands in ruin. The ensign is three covered woven baskets on a red backdrop. Some other notable English families: A crowned lion rampant represents the Norman family of St. George, descending from Baldwin St. George, and quite likely specific to Sir Richard St. George (circa 1550 - 1635) of Wiltshire who was a long-serving officer of arms at the College of Arms in London, and in 1623 was appointed Clarenceaux King of arms - the second highest heraldic appointment in England. Richard St George was the head of a noted heraldic family. His son Henry became Garter Principal King of Arms in 1645 and the latter?s two sons, Thomas and Henry became Garters in 1686 and 1703 respectively. The family bore a coat of arms blazoned Argent a Chief Azure overall a Lion rampant Gules crowned Or. The Coat of Arms of the Seymour Dukes of Somerset is one of intricate design and features an augmentation granted in 1536. [Quarterly: 1st and 4th, Or on a Pile Gules between six Fleurs-de-Lis Azure three Lions of England (being the Augmentation of Honour granted by King Henry VIII on his marriage with Jane Seymour); 2nd and 3rd, Gules two Wings joined in lure the tips downwards Or (Seymour).] The De Cressi (De Cressy) family is represented by a shield with floral emblem to one corner and a dominant lion rampant with a forked tail, possibly deriving from Hugh de Cressy (died 1189), an Anglo-Norman administrator and nobleman. Hugh was close to King Henry II, witnessing a large number of royal charters and serving as a royal justice. Little is known of his ancestry other than they descended from Cressy, in Normandy. He first served two brothers of King Henry II of England before becoming a royal official. The Cressey family is also connected to the Hodsock Priory in Nottinghamshire, which they owned from the mid-12th century for more than 200 years. They were powerful enough to entertain kings of England, Henry II, John and Edward I. A notable in this lineage was Sir John de Cressi, Knight of Hodsock in Nottinghamshire, and High Melton in Yorkshire, who died in August 1383. The arms of Heron of Bokenfield, feature a chevron between three standing herons, the baronetcy having been created in 1778 for Sir Robert Heron (1765-), baronet, of Newark-upon-Trent, in the county of Nottingham. [His father was the royal physician to George II and George III.] The arms of the Hevenyngham (Heveningham) family of Suffolk is exactly as described in "The Visitation of Suffolk 1561": Quarterly Or and Gules on a bordure engrailed Sable eight escallops Argent. A chevron between three lion's heads on a blue background represents Sir John Wyndham (1558-1645), JP, of Orchard Wyndham in the parish of Watchet in Somerset, was an English landowner who played an important role in the defence of the West Country against the threat of Spanish invasion; Thomas Wyndham, 1st Baron Wyndham PC (1681-1745) who served as Lord Chancellor of Ireland from 1726 to 1739; as well as and his ninth son, Sir Wadham Wyndham (1609-1668), Serjeant-at-law, of Ilton, Somerset and St. Edmund?s College, Salisbury, an English judge. A descendant, Right Honorable W. Wyndham, was providing patronage (financing) for the rectory in Barningham-Norwood from at least 1800-1829.
