Complete set of French nineteenth-century children's alphabet blocks.

France: circa, 1870. Game comprising 24 timber blocks, each papered with illustrations on each face, with six chromolithographic paper guiding sheets each measuring 177 x 262 mm., original box with papered lid. French alphabet blocks, comprising a game for children wherein the blocks are rearranged on their different faces to form a picture alphabet with various items and animals including a zebra, duck, and a kangaroo. The set includes the original box accompanied by the six lithographic sheets that were dissected and pasted to the blocks (five of the sheets are loose, while one sheet is pasted to the front cover of the box itself). As such, these sheets form a guide for youngsters to reassemble the blocks accordingly, and learn the alphabet in the process. As the game is not titled, and none of its parts or packaging bears the details of the lithographer; details of its production are scant and it cannot be traced through the usual bibliographies. Nonetheless, it is most unusual to find an item for children of this age and composite nature in such good condition. Some repairs to reverse of the five paper guiding sheets.

Grande dipinto a tempera raffigurante Lenin (in russo: ?????), pseudonimo di Vladimir Il'i? Ul'janov (in russo:

1870. Grande dipinto policromo, su tela, in formato cm.151x78, raffigurante l'uomo politico sovietico a figura intera. The Heathen Chinee.

Chicago. The Western News Company. 1870. 9 loose black and white lithographs, 7 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches, with original decorative envelope (7 3/4 x 6 inches). Light soiling, edge tears and wear to envelope, plus previous owner's name and date (July 3 1871) in ink and pencil to front cover. Toning to first sheet, otherwise very clean and bright. The lithographic printing of this set is particularly strong. A superior example of this unusual set. This is the first printing of the first independent (pirated) issue of Harte's poem, which first appeared as "Plain Language from Truthful James" in the September 1870 issue of the Overland Monthly( which Harte edited). Harte evidently wrote the poem as a space-filler and a satire on the anti-Chinese immigration sentiments of the Irish immigrant community, as expressed by the card sharp Bill Nye on sheet 6, "we are ruined by chinese cheap labor." In fact it was to have the opposite from desired effect (see the excellent article by Gary Scharnhorst "Ways That Are Dark": Appropriations of Bret Harte's "Plain Language from Truthful James" in Nineteenth-Century Literature, Volume 51, No. 3 December 1996.) Hull's illustrations added fuel to the popular racist reading of the poem, embellishing the poem with a scene of mob violence.

Architectural Drawings By W. Burges Architect.

Folio (560 x 375 mm). Publisher's quarter crimson morocco over pebble-grain cloth covered boards, sometime expertly rebacked preserving the original gilt-lettered spine; title-page, dedication leaf, pp. 29, [1], 2, subscribers' list, 75 lithographed plates; lightly bumped at the extremities, else a very clean copy. Sole edition. Shortly after Burges had left the office of Edward Blore (to whom he had been articled) he spent a year and a half in France and Italy. It was his intention 'to write a sort of grammar of thirteenth-century architecture, and to illustrate it with carefully measured details... The plan of the book fell through, for I had scarcely been at work two months before the advertisement of M. Viollet le Duc's appeared, and I then continued the drawings for my own instruction and without any intention of publication ... to myself they were very valuable as they... taught me the why and the wherefore, which is the base of all architectural knowledge; so they were put into strong working bindings, and thus they remained in my bookcase until the year 1864'. The plates were lithographed under the direct supervision of Burges himself, who undertook to deface the stones as soon as the plates had been struck off. The volume was privately issued from his office at 15 Buckingham Street, Strand, with the promise 'above all, to allow no copies to go into the trade'. Weinreb Cat. 7.19

La Terre, Etudes geographiques. Le jeu de globe.

Nuremberg: Ch. Kapp, circa, 1870. Puzzle globe, standing 210 mm. tall, the globe sliced into six horizontal sections, the two poles present each as a full slice, the two tropics divided into four equal sections, and the two equatorial slices divided into six, each section with a printed descriptive note pasted on the upper side and a detailed map of one of the land masses on the lower (therefore describing the five continents on the upper and mapping them on the lower), the whole completed with a black enamel base and turned knob at the top, 23 pieces in total (including the base), some rubbing but in remarkably fine condition; complete with the original engraved timber box, dimensions 125 x 210 x 170 mm., paper label "Etudes geographiques" to the lid, and the printed instructions pasted on the interior. An exceptionally attractive puzzle globe, unusually fine and complete with its original box.The colourful printed label to the box designates this as 'Etudes geographiques', but it is described on the globe itself as simply 'La Terre'. A printed note on the globe confirms that the maker is Charles Kapp of Nuremberg, although the French captions strongly suggest that it was made for the export market. Not a great deal is known about Kapp - he is not, for instance, recorded in Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers - although he is thought to have been active from around 1860. We have not handled another Kapp globe before, nor, indeed, have we ever handled a comparable puzzle globe. It is certainly of considerable rarity, and the survival of such a globe, particularly in such exemplary original condition, marks this out as one of the more striking cartographic pieces that we have offered. One of the exquisite aspects of this puzzle is that each of the sections of the globe also features printed images to top and bottom: each of the five major regions, that is, has its own highly decorative cartouche and a regional map. The cartouche for "Océanie", for example, describes the region as the fifth part of the globe, and one which embraces all of the islands to the south-east of Asia. The cartouche further comments that Nouvelle Hollande is the largest of the islands, although the two figures flanking the cartouche are evidently depictions of men from the Pacific islands. Similarly, the map of the region shows the China Sea in the north-west right through to New Zealand in the south-east. "Nouvelle Hollande" is shown in some detail and with reasonable accuracy. The original box has had some neat minor repairs but is generally in excellent condition, although one of the two original brass hooks has long since snapped. The printed label on the lid depicts a scholar in a frock coat showing a table globe to a boy and a girl, while, at the teacher's left hand, are what appear to be the disassembled parts of a puzzle globe. The original printed instructions, tipped onto the underside of the lid, explain the process of assembling the globe, and assure the enthusiast that once the pieces are assembled with 'un peu d'exactitude l'une sur l'autre, vous veriez le dessin le plus parfait d'un globe de la terre.'.

Flying Squadron on the Derwent River.

Hobart? 1870. Stereoscope, card mount measuring 175 x 83mm. Rare stereoscopic photograph of the Royal Navy "Flying Squadron" on their visit to the Derwent River in January 1870. The Flying Squadron, under the command of Rear Admiral Hornby, was a travelling display of British naval supremacy which visited Sydney and Melbourne before arriving in Hobart on 2 January 1870. Although unarmed, the fleet played a role in asserting British naval power in the farther corners of the empire. This remarkable stereogram, captured from Government House overlooking the Derwent River, depicts five of the fleet vessels at anchor. This image is attributable to Hobart-based commercial photographer, grocer and entrepreneur Samuel Clifford (1827-1890). Clifford arrived in Tasmania from London in 1848 and quickly established himself as an industrious photographer and associate of innovative Hobart based stereographer Thomas J. Nevin. Clearly, Clifford was well established commercially before the visit of the Flying Squadron: an advertisement in the Tasmanian Almanac for 1869 boasts over 1,000 photographic views for sale available in album, cabinet and stereogram formats, including a deluxe suite celebrating the visit of the Duke of Edinburgh to Hobart in 1868.Although unsigned, and although this actual image does not appear to be otherwise recorded in Australian institutional holdings, Clifford was certainly the most prominent photographer associated with the visit of the Flying Squadron to Tasmanian waters, and the style of the present image accords well with known photographs by him. The collection of Sir William Crowther donated to the State Library of Tasmania, for example, contains several early photographs of the Flying Squadron by Clifford Samuel from a number of vantage points including Government House, the Domain, Rosny and Hobson's Bay. By the same token the pencil note to the rear, although partially obscured, appears to be in the same hand as at least one other similar scene (compare, for example, the inscription to the lower margin of the image in the Crowther collection also taken from the hillcrest at Government House). Both images in excellent condition, blank rear face flecked.

South Australia. Standing Rules and Orders for regulating the public business of the House of Assembly... [and three other works].

Adelaide: W.C. Cox, 1870. Four works bound together, duodecimo, owner's signatures on front end paper; fine, in a handsome crimson roan presentation binding, lettered in gilt to front and spine. A charming and quite remarkable little volume, with four apparently unrecorded works relating to the establishment and running of South Australia's first representative parliament. Particularly notable is the fact that the first two more substantial publications print the rules and orders for public business and private bills in the House of Assembly, and must have been of invaluable assistance to the volume's original owner, Sir George Strickland Kingston, who, a manuscript note explains, was the first Speaker.Sir George Strickland Kingston (1807-1880) had promoted South Australian colonisation in 1834, and was appointed deputy surveyor general to the new colony two years later. Although he wore many hats in the colony during his long career, he was first elected to the Legislative Council in 1851, where he cemented his reputation as a 'republican and a fiery supporter of civil and religious liberty' (ADB). In the first parliament under responsible government in 1857, he was elected South Australia's first Speaker in the House of Assembly. The volume includes the rule and orders for "regulating the public business" in the lower house (xviii, 116 pp.); the rules and orders relating to Private Bills (v, 23 pp.); an 1856 "Act to establish a Constitution for South Australia" (drop-title, 18 pp.); and an 1858 "Act to confer certain Powers and Privileges on the Houses of Parliament of South Australia" (drop-title, 7 pp.). All four works were printed by the Government Printer Cox.A similar work was prepared for the Legislative Council in 1878 by the printer Spiller, but all of these earlier House of Assembly-related work appears to be unrecorded.

"Resultate aus Astronomischen und Magnetischen Beobachtungen auf einer Fünfmonatlichen Reise von St. Petersburg über Sibirien und die Mongolei nach Peking in den Jahren 1867 und 1868" [in] Meteorologicheskii Sbornik [Russian series title]: Repertorium für Meteorologie Heraugeben von der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften.

Saint Petersburg: Imperial Academy of Sciences, 1870. Large quarto, with a single chromolithographic plate of cloud formations, four engraved plates of scientific instruments, three large folding tables and set of blank meteorological observation slips bound in (comprising 16 smaller leaves); in contemporary decorated full green calf, moiré endpapers, all edges gilt. Rare Russian printing of an overland journey from Saint Petersburg to Peking.Russia maintained a meteorological service in China since 1841, as part of the Russian Orthodox Mission based in Peking. In 1849 the service was expanded and moved to the grounds of the Russian Embassy, although the recording of scientific data remained intermittent for many years. In 1867 the service came under the supervision of the Academy of Science in St. Petersburg, who dispatched Dr. Hermann Fritsche to Peking as the new director. Fritsche (1839-1913) travelled extensively in the first years of his appointment, and the article offered here records his journey from St. Petersburg to Peking, traversing the vast steppe country of northern China and Mongolia in the process. The article documents his work in determining geographical, astronomical and magnetic points en route (including observations of Kyakhta, Urga and Kalgan).Fritsche remained in Peking for the next 16 years, during which time he travelled extensively and established observation stations in provincial China. In 1877 he published in Shanghai The Climate of Eastern Asia, the first substantial thesis on the subject. Aside from his efforts in establishing scientific meteorology in China, Fritsche's travels assisted in the accurate mapping of northern China and eastern Mongolia.Fritsche's article was included in the first issue of the meteorological journal Meteorologicheskii Sbornik, here offered in its entirety with the full complement of blank folding tables and paper slips for recording data in the field. Meteorologicheskii Sbornik was published under the direction of the Swiss physicist Heinrich von Wild (1833-1902) who assumed directorship of the General Physical Observatory in Saint Petersburg in 1868. Under Wild's supervision a modern meteorological system was introduced throughout the Russian Empire and beyond. Indeed, the improvement of the Peking station and Fritsche's appointment reflect Wild's aspiration for a continental approach to data collection. Printed in both in Russian and German, Meteorologicheskii Sbornik was published by the Imperial Academy of Sciences at Saint Petersburg between 1870-1894 and totals 23 volumes. On the Russian observatory at Peking see MacKeown Early China Coast Meteorology (Hong Kong University Press 2011). An excellent copy.

Paris: Pellerin & Cie, circa 1870. Board game with numbered pictorial compartments, being a hand-coloured lithographic sheet measuring 430 x 540 mm. The Pellerin Family of Epinal, France began making popular prints in the mid eighteenth century, by the later half of the nineteenth century, a great deal of the business was directed toward the printing of paper toys for children. Because of the extreme fragility of these paper toys, few of them have survived. This is a fine example of one of their board games, in excellent condition. Fine condition.

        The 104th Psalm...

London: Vincent Brooks Day & Son, circa, 1870. Folding panorama in its original cloth boards, chromo-lithographic plates pasted together to form one continuous panorama 113 x 3660 mm.; lettered in gilt to front. Beautiful coloured-lithographic panorama, as issued in its original decorated cloth boards: the series of 24 connected panels combine to illustrate Psalm 104, forming a continuous panorama over three-and-a-half metres in total. This copy is unusually fine; where seen, these fragile works more commonly display significant wear. The work has been featured in some detail online, testament to its visual impact (see for example a handsome commentary including a full reproduction at the Bridwell Library of Southern Methodist University in the USA). The panorama begins with an image of the psalmist, King David, covering his head in reverence to the Lord; at the end, he appears again, wearing a crown and playing his harp within his palace in Jerusalem. The remainder of the panorama consists of various landscapes teeming with life, as described in the psalm, and includes a scene showing the "leviathan" or whale. The panorama was designed by Susan Maria Ffarington (1809-1894), who illustrated several devotional books for children and also designed windows for parish churches near her estate at Worden Hall, Lancashire. Fine.

No Treason, No VI, The Constitution of No Authority.

1870. Did the Civil War Nullify the U.S. Constitution? Spooner, Lysander [1808-1887]. No Treason. No. VI. The Constitution of No Authority. Boston: Published by the Author, 1870. 59 pp. Octavo (8-3/4" x 5-3/4"). Disbound stab-stitched pamphlet. Light shelfwear and toning, faint vertical crease through center. A few brief contemporary annotations to text, interior otherwise clean. A well-preserved copy of a scarce title. $650. * First edition. One of the most colorful American reformers of the nineteenth century, Spooner is remembered for his abolitionist activities, challenge to the U.S. Post Office with his American Letter Mail Company and his contributions to libertarian and anarchist thought. No Treason. No. 6 is final title in a series of pamphlets critical of the legality of Federal actions during the Civil War. In this lengthy essay, Spooner argues that the Constitution was a contract that had been irreparably violated during the war and was thus void. Furthermore, since the government now existing under the Constitution pursued coercive policies that were contrary to Natural Law and to the consent of the governed, it had been demonstrated that document was unable to adequately stop many abuses against liberty or to prevent tyranny from taking hold. Spooner bolstered his argument by noting that the Federal government, as established by a legal contract, could not legally bind all persons living in the nation since none had ever signed their names or given their consent to it; That consent had always been assumed, thus failing the most basic burdens of proof for a valid contract in the courtroom. Spooner widely circulated the No Treason pamphlets, which also contained a legal defense against the crime of treason itself intended for former Confederate soldiers (hence the name of the pamphlet, arguing that "no treason" had been committed in the war by the south). These excerpts were published in DeBow's Review and other well known southern periodicals of the time. OCLC locates 1 copy in a law library (Social Law).

Grande dipinto a tempera raffigurante Lenin (in russo: ?????), pseudonimo di Vladimir Il'i? Ul'janov (in russo: ???????? ????? ???????).

      - Grande dipinto policromo, su tela, in formato cm.151x78, raffigurante l'uomo politico sovietico a figura intera.

      - "Putti riding on lions" original pastels on paper, old mounted on canvas approx.30,5x37cm; around 1870 [Framed behind glass; dimension of the old leaf-gilt wooden frame 46x50cm.]
