        Ondonga kielen ABD. Ensim

      - WorldCat (2 copies); not in Mendelssohn. A rare primer of the Bantu dialect Ndonga or OshiNdonga, spoken by the Ovambo people in the kingdom of Ondonga in what is now northern Namibia and southern Angola, still spoken today by some 1 million people. It was published by the printing office of the Finnish Literature Society in Helsinki and many of the texts are Christian. Finnish Lutherans set up a mission in Ondangwa, seat of the kings of Ondonga, in 1870, and the present primer was probably intended both to help Finnish missionaries preparing for life in Africa learn Ndonga and for them to use in Ondonga to teach the natives to read and write their own language and to promote Christian ideas. In very good condition, with only very slight browning. Lower corner of the front board chipped.

Le Petit Naturaliste [Le Jeune Naturaliste]. Texte part Jules Rostaing. Lithographies par Lehnert.

Paris: Librairie Ducrocq, circa, 1870. Small oblong quarto, with decorated and letterpress title-pages and 24 full-page coloured lithographs by Lehnert; original gilt blocked red papered boards boards. Charming children's book, with 24 oblong lithographic plates and a decorated title page. The book illustrates a somewhat portly kangaroo, with accompanying descriptive text, as well as other antipodean species such as the emu, cassowary and crocodile. The author, Jules Rostaing (born 1824) was a well-known writer on all manner of books for children, including a similar publication on the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. The book includes a lithographic decorated title reading "Le Jeune Naturaliste" followed by a letterpress title-page bearing the variant title "Le Petit Naturaliste". To further complicate matters, it was issued in both illustrated and plain lettered boards (this copy being an example of the former, with a handsome gilt-blocked deer and giraffe). Nonetheless, this book is not listed in the Gumuchian catalogue under either variant of the title, although some 12 titles by Jules Rostaing are included. It is uncommon, only appearing once on the market in the past two decades, and is not retained in Australian institutional collections. Boards rubbed, spine ends frayed, internally very good.

Darby: Pr. by the author, [1872]. 8vo. 54, [14 (adv.)], 22 (adv.) pp.; 4 plts.    Attractively bound collection of the first editions of these four humorous works written in thick Derbyshire dialect (the first sentence here reads "Frend, ah gey thee my hond, ah dunna mene tow fingers, bur a gud grip, az tha'll feel tinglin e aw thy veins"). => Three of the pieces include glossaries of some of the more opaque terms. Two of the essays recount visits to the extensive and interesting => Midland Counties Fine Arts and Industrial Exhibition of 1870, and the final entry features a lengthy appendix offering a more serious look at => Matlock-Bank, its hydropathic establishments, and its other landmarks, this in standard English. Mr. Smedley's Hydropathic Establishment, referenced in the text, is the first business appearing in the subsequent advertisement section, which is extensive, evocative, and contains => many ads embellished with little recommendations (by "Twitcher"?) in Darbyshire doggerel.    The author, who spent most of his life in Derby, was a sculptor as well as a Derbyshire historian, and he appears to have supplied the => original illustrations here himself. The two pairs of plates (one lithographed, one steel-engraved) are done in notably different styles ? we suspect that two different engravers worked from Robinson's sketches. Robinson wrote one additional Twitcher piece in 1881, describing a visit to the Royal Agricultural Show, not included in this gathering.    All the Twitcher books are now scarce: WorldCat finds very few U.K. holdings of these titles and virtually no U.S.    Provenance: First text page with early pencilled ownership inscription of Mr. H. Mills in upper outer corner.         Crismas: NSTC 2R14138; Visit: NSTC 2R14139; Second Visit: NSTC 2R14140; Watter Cure: NSTC 0643751. Later quarter green calf and fine combed marbled paper?covered sides, spine with gilt-stamped title; minor shelfwear. Pencilled ownership note as above. Light age-toning; first two works with mild foxing and last leaves with avery light, old waterstain across a lower corner. => A highly personal production in text *and* illustration; an entertaining and very uncommon gathering.

Classic Confederate General E Lee cabinet card photo

n.p., ca. 1870. 3.75" x 5.5". "Cabinet Card of Robert E. Lee in his classic portrait image. 3.75"" x 5.5"" set on a card to a dimension of 4"" x 6.5""Produced by Kottman portraits, Altoona, Pa. with full photographer description covering the verso. Slightly grubby with a few very faded stains. Signed in plate. (Not Robert E. Lee's original signature on photo).Owing to the larger image size, the cabinet card steadily increased in popularity during the second half of the 1860s and into the 1870s, replacing the carte de visite as the most popular form of portraiture. The cabinet card was large enough to be easily viewed from across the room when typically displayed on a cabinet, which is probably why they became known as such in the vernacular. However, when the renowned Civil War photographer Mathew Brady first started offering them to his clientele towards the end of 1865, he used the trademark ""Imperial Carte-de-Visite."" Whatever the name, the popular print format joined the photograph album as a fixture in the late 19th-century Victorian parlor.A wonderful example of this important historical Confederate General during the U.S. Civil War who led southern forces against the Union Army. His battles climaxed with the three-day stand-off, known as the Battle of Gettysburg, which almost destroyed his army, ending Lee's invasion of the North and helping to turn the war around for the Union. This beginning of the end continued when by the summer of 1864 Ulysses S. Grant gained the upper hand, decimating much of Richmond, the Confederate's capital, and Petersburg. By early 1865 the fate of the war was clear, a fact driven home on April 2 when Lee was forced to abandon Richmond. A week later, a reluctant and despondent Lee surrendered to Grant at a private home in Appomattox, Virginia.Lee has been quoted as having said, ""I suppose there is nothing for me to do but go and see General Grant,"" he told an aide. ""And I would rather die a thousand deaths."" By the end of the war, Lee was saved from being hanged as a traitor by a forgiving Lincoln and Grant, and returned home to his family in April 1865"

        The Quadrupeds of North America.

New York: George R. Lockwood, 1870 - 3 volumes, octavo. Publisher's deluxe binding of brown full morocco, blind stamped decoration to spines, titles to spines gilt, blind stamped rules and decoration to boards, inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Some rubbing to binding, with minor wear to extremities. An excellent, clean set. Illustrated with 155 hand-finished lithographic plates. Final edition. Having made his reputation with "The Birds of America", Audubon began an equally imposing project "The Quadrupeds of North America". Audubon travelled the entirety of North America, including British and Russian territories, the USA and parts of Mexico collecting specimens to use as models for his paintings, his ambition being to paint every North American species. From the perspective of the Quadrupeds his career unfolds with new fascination, leaving a fresh impression of his genius. John Bachman, Audubon's long-time collaborator, said of the Quadrupeds: "They are the most beautiful and perfect specimens of the art. I doubt whether there is anything in the world of natural history like them, I do not believe that there is any man living that can equal them" (Ford 1951). Audubon's Quadrupeds "is a breathtaking accomplishment . the most naturalistic depiction of American mammals ever done" (Legacies of Genius 128). The work first appeared in three folio volumes from 1845-8. In order to reach a wider audience, the Audubons then prepared this edition in octavo, which was issued in 31 parts and then bound volumes between 1849 and 1854.         Pansy's Wish: A Christmas Fantasy, With a Moral

Boston: Published for the Mass. Homeopathic Hospital by Marion & Co., n.d. [probably 1870] - First Edition; presumed second printing; original printed wrappers; an excellent copy. The Bibliography of American Literature (#270) devotes a lengthy discussion to the printing history of this book. In brief, the book was produced by the two young daughters of Aldrich's Beacon Hill neighbor and intimate friend, Dr. Israel Talbot for sale at a fair held to benefit the hospital. Apparently, the first printing was done on a cheap amateur press that Marion Talbot owned, and she reprinted the pamphlet on a more expensive "Novelty" press which she found for sale at the local Mechanics' Fair.         Histoire d'Angleterre depuis l'avénement de Jacques II. Histoire du règne de Guillaume III

Second edition and first Charpentier for these two books. The history of England (2 volumes) was translated by Jules Peyronnet, and the story of William (4 volumes) by Amédée Pichot. Half red morocco iced over. Binding unsigned master. Back to nerves ornate. Title, volume number with golden date tail. Double gold band on the flats. Golden head. Scattered spots. Very nice copy, perfectly prepared and beautifully decorative series. Whig history Macaulay had a profound impact, although later he was blamed his vision, that of belonging to a liberal Whig and analyzing the Revolution of 1668 as a glorious act for the future of England. The Whigs have always shown their opposition to royal absolutism. Macaulay's writings were praised for the quality of their prose and their main thesis, that of England constant march towards progress since the famous Revolution of 1668. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.         The Family History of England: Civil, Military, Social, Commercial & Religious From the Earliest Period th the Passing of the Reform Bill, 1867.

6 volumes. London, William Mackenzie, 1870. 19 cm x 27 cm. II, 402 pages, LXIV / V, 336 pages, LX / VII, 360 pages, XL / VI, 336 pages / VIII, 400 pages / VIII, 344 pages, LVI. Original Hardcover. The covers of these books are frayed and worn by age. Otherwise very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Illustrated with maps, portraits, views and other engravings. Rare to get all six volumes together. England became inhabited more than 800,000 years ago, as the discovery of flint tools and footprints at Happisburgh in Norfolk has revealed. The earliest evidence for early modern humans in North West Europe, a jawbone discovered in Devon at Kents Cavern in 1927, was re-dated in 2011 to between 41,000 and 44,000 years old. Continuous human habitation in England dates to around 13,000 years ago (see Creswellian), at the end of the last glacial period. The region has numerous remains from the Mesolithic, Neolithic, and Bronze Age, such as Stonehenge and Avebury. In the Iron Age, England, like all of Britain south of the Firth of Forth, was inhabited by the Celtic people known as the Britons, including some Belgic tribes (e.g. the Atrebates, the Catuvellauni, the Trinovantes, etc.) in the south east. In AD 43 the Roman conquest of Britain began; the Romans maintained control of their province of Britannia until the early 5th century. The end of Roman rule in Britain facilitated the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain, which historians often regard as the origin of England and of the English people. The Anglo-Saxons, a collection of various Germanic peoples, established several kingdoms that became the primary powers in present-day England and parts of southern Scotland. They introduced the Old English language, which largely displaced the previous British language. The Anglo-Saxons warred with British successor states in Wales, Cornwall, and the Hen Ogledd (Old North; the Brythonic-speaking parts of northern England and southern Scotland), as well as with each other. Raids by Vikings became frequent after about AD 800, and the Norsemen settled in large parts of what is now England. During this period, several rulers attempted to unite the various Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, an effort that led to the emergence of the Kingdom of England by the 10th century. Under the Tudors and the later Stuart dynasty, England became a world colonial power. During the rule of the Stuarts, the English Civil War took place between the Parliamentarians and the Royalists, which resulted in the execution of King Charles I (1649) and the establishment of a series of republican governments

A collection of 17 broadsides, 2-page publications, and pamphlets.

Various publishers/presses, 1870. For Guatemala the 1870s were years of a Liberal government and 19th-century Liberal reforms: confiscation of Church property and the concomitant excloistering of nuns and monks, improved sanitation, improved supervision of food handling, economic reforms, securing a free press, bringing telegraphy and the railroad to the nation, and improving the police force and public education. The decade began with the 1871 overthrow of Vicente Cerna Sandoval's Conservative regime and then saw other military actions including the putting down of the 1872 attempted coup d'etat by the recently ousted Conservatives; and because that failed plot was supported by the government of Honduras, Guatemala went to war with its neighbor. The collection touches on war, politics, reform, public health, and reaction to reform.
