        Kitab Muhit al-Muhit. TWO VOLUMES.

America Press, Beirut 1870 - Volume I: 1151 pp., / Volume II: 1152-3208 pp., Arabic text within borders, double column per page, contemporary full calf with raised gilt spine, rubbed covers, some spotting throughout. "Lebanon was the centre of Arabic lexicography in the nineteenth century. In 1867-70 the celebrated dictionary "Muhit al-Muhit" by the distinguished scholar Butrus al-Bustani was published, compiled in the modern arrangement. In the introduction the author stated that the Arab world needed a dictionary so arranged, and the "Qamus" [of Fairuzabadi], for all his popularity was hard to use because of its rhyme arrangement. He therefore took the material of the "Qamus", and supplemented it from other lexicographers, using post-classical authors for some of his examples. This dictionary was highly praised by Arab scholars, and its fame eclipsed that of another dictionary written during the same period "Aqrab al-Mawarid" by Sa'id al-Sartuni".(John A. Haywood"Arabic Lexicography". p. 109]. Size: 4to [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Collection of Three Early Views of Canton (Guangzhou) Landmarks.

This is an excellent group of early photographs of cultural landmarks in Canton (Guangzhou), by Lai Fong, China's foremost 19th century Chinese photographer. Guangzhou, often called the City of Five Goats based on the legend that five beings with five goats brought bunches of grain to the local people blessing them for eternity with fertility and prosperity, has always held an important role in the history of China. It was the capital of three local dynasties: the Nanyue, Southern Han, and Southern Ming. The city's harbor was one of the starting points of the Marine Silk Road. This collection of photographs by the great 19th century Chinese photographer Lai Fong, whose work is distinct for its artfulness and high quality, offers early photographic views of three of Canton's most revered landmarks: the Hall of 500 Louhan, the Pazhou Pagoda, and the Zhenhai Tower. Hall of 500 Louhan of Hualin Temple LAI, FONG, Canton. No. 317. Wa Lum Temple. Canton, ca. 1870. Albumen print, mounted. 8 ¼ x 10 ½. Printed letterpress caption on verso: "No. 317. - ..." This is an important photograph by Lai Fong of the original Hall of 500 Louhan (Arhat) at Haulin Temple. According to legend during the 6th century Bodhidharma, a revered Buddhist monk, preached Buddhism from an alter he set up in Xiguan. In 1655, Zongfu, a Zen master, built a temple at this location that he named Hualin. The temple was divided into several halls. The most impressive hall was the Hall of 500 Louhan, which contained 500 gold painted life-sized statues of monks each with their unique characteristics. Buddhist tradition gives accounts of groups of 16, 18, or 500 luohans who were commanded by Buddha to await the coming of Maitreya, the Future Buddha. The original sculptures photographed by Lai Fong were destroyed. The Hall of 500 Louhan was rebuilt in 1997 and remains one of Guangzhou's great cultural landmarks. Pazhou Pagoda LAI, FONG, Pazhou Pagoda No. 289. Canton, ca.1875. Albumen print, mounted. 8 ¼ x 10 ½ inches. Printed letterpress caption: "No. 289. - Pachao Pagoda, Canton. This pagoda is near to Whampoa, it is nine stories in height and has been built for a great number of years ...." This is an early photograph by Lai Fong of the Pazhou Pagoda, which was referred to as the "Pillar of Pazhou" during the Qing Dynasty. The Pazhou Pagoda was built during the Ming Dynasty as a Buddhist landmark on an island on the southern bank of the Pearl River close to Guangzhou's two other ancient pagodas, Chigang Pagoda and Flower or Hua Ta Pagoda. The Pazhou Pagoda was used as a guide for merchant ships traveling on the Marine Silk Road. Zhenhai Tower LAI, FONG, Zhenhai Tower, No. 260. Canton, ca.1875. Albumen print, mounted. 8 ¼ x 10 ½ inches. Printed letterpress caption: "No. 260. - Pagoda, Canton. This place of worship is built on the walls of the city and is Five Storey in height... " Lai Fong's early photograph of Zhenhai Tower, or the Five-Story Pagoda, offers a unique view of the tower and the old city wall, an important Guangzhou landmark. Zhenhai Tower was built during the Ming Dynasty by Zhu Liangzu in an effort to subdue an omen. Once called the First Tower of South China, Zhenhai Tower was one of old Guangzhou's most famous monuments. The tower's elevated location provided a spectacular view of the city. The tower is now the Guangzhou Museum which houses over 5,000 years of relics and documents related to Guangzhou's history. Zhenhai Tower is one of the tallest and oldest buildings in Yuexiu Park. 3 Albumen prints, mounted. 8 ¼ x 10 ½ inches. Printed letterpress captions versos.

Photograph View of Rome from the Tiber River with Castel Sant'Angelo and Saint Peter's Basilica

Rome, c. 1870 14 x 9 in. Albumen print, on original mount. Short closed tears and some foxing to mount, image in fine condition. A fine 19th century photograph of landmarks of Rome. This early photograph, looking south over the Tiber River toward Castel Sant'Angelo and then further on to the dome of Saint Peter's Basilica, captures a view of some of Rome's most important landmarks. This vantage point had been popular with painters from the beginning of the 19th century. Painters Alexander Brullov (1826), Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1826-28) and Rudolf Weigmann (1834) all produced images of this scene, and photographers later adopted the popular view for tourist photographs like the one seen here. The invention of photography radically expanded the viewer's access to far away places. As 19th-century American photographer Marcus Aurelius Root described,"What, heretofore, the traveler alone could witness, ... even the humblest may now behold, substantially, without crossing his own threshold." Saint Peter's Basilica, arguably the most important Christian landmark in the world, is traditionally considered to be the final resting place of St. Peter. Castel Sant'Angelo, also known as Hadrian's Tomb, was a mausoleum commissioned by Emperor Hadrian in 135 CE.

Fort Assinniboine, Montana Collection of Photographs

Set of seven albumen photographs of Fort Assinniboine, Montana taken from the 1870s to 1890. Only two photographs have H. G. Klenze imprints on verso, the rest are unmarked. All are mounted and measure between 9" x 5 ½" and 10" x 8" (including mounts) ; four mounts are dark brown with gilt edges, Klenze imprints are on two of these, and three mounts are buff, one with manuscript title underneath photo. Conditions range from good to very good. All photographs have light soiling and light wear to edges; some have light silvering; all mounts have light wear and creasing to all edges and moderate soiling and toning on verso; the corner of one mount is bent and has a 3" crease affecting photograph; a different photo/mount is missing the bottom right corner, including a 1" portion of the photo. Almost all images have good contrast and detail. Imprints read: "H. G Klenze. Post Photographer, Fort Assinniboine, M. T. Photographs of noted Indian Chiefs. Views of Western Scenery" and H. G Klenze. Photographer, Fort Assinniboine, M. T." Some of Klenze's earlier imprints state that he was successor to David F. Barry, a prolific photographer in the Dakota Territory. Photographs in this collection depict a square with officers' quarters on the right, enlisted men's quarters on the left, views showing the soldiers lined up in formation, armed with bayonets and rifles, relaxed scenes of soldiers posed on a stairway, and a sawmill located behind the officers' quarters. Like all military forts, the grounds and structures were continually rebuilt, with at least two time periods represented in these photographs. Four photographs represent the Fort when it had many whitewashed buildings and a boardwalk. The other three clearly represent a later time, likely 1880s to 1890s. The brick octagonal structure of the officers' quarters, located on the right side of one photograph is known to be built in 1880. The size and scale of Fort Assinniboine's military post and 220,000-acre military reservation established it as one of the most massive in the United States. At one time 750 officers, enlisted men and civilians resided at the post. "Between 1879 and 1903, Fort Assinniboine served as a key component of a national military strategy to secure the International Border with Canada with respect to an overall policy of intimidation and containment of Native American nations" (Montana State Historical Society). The Fort influenced national Indian policy, in particular the Cree, Metis, Blackfeet, and Sioux nations, and impacted the lifeways of those native populations. This is a historically important collection documenting the evolution of an important military base. .

[FIVE OFFICIAL JAPANESE MANUSCRIPT REPORTS ON FOREIGN ENVOYS AND NEW TRADING PARTNERS IN JAPAN, 1852-1870]

[Tokyo, 1870. Four bound volumes, plus one octavo sheet. Gatherings of three volumes tied with waste paper and string, one volume in stiff wrappers stitched with string, one loose sheet, previously folded. Tied volumes with corners somewhat rumpled. Moderate worming in one volume, light worming in two others. Scattered light foxing and occasional dampstaining. Overall, about very good. This set of five official, internal manuscript documents reflect the growing Japanese interest in the manners and customs of foreign visitors as the country opened itself to international trade and diplomacy during the mid-19th century. Two documents deal specifically with the Chinese, one with American diplomats; the other two consist of general notes on foreign envoys and trading partners. A full list is as follows: 1) Tojin Hyoban Kuduki, "On Reputations of the Chinese Character," 1852, [7]pp. 2) "Report on the Chinese Coming to Nagasaki," ca. 1850-1854, [1]p. 3) "Notes on Foreign Envoys," ca. 1860, [28]pp. 4) Gaikotu Shinshoho Kakitome, "Notes of New Business With Foreign Countries," 1863, [70]pp. 5) Amerika Shisetsu Churitsuno Omomuki, "Description of the American Envoy," ca. 1870, [96]pp. An insightful collection of documents that divulge the Japanese perspective on the re-opening of their country to foreigners and trade during the period surrounding Commodore Perry's arrival in the 1850s.

(Brief v. 26. I. 1870). Jahrhunderts. - Zu Roquette vgl. Kosch III, 2300f. - Jeder Brief mit hs. Verfasservermerk von alter Hand auf Bl. 2 verso.

[Broadside]: The Fifteenth Amendment, Celebrated. May 19th 1870

New York: Published by Thomas Kelly, 1870. Very Good. Large hand-colored lithograph. Measuring 32" x 26". Modest toning in the margins from an old mat, tiny nicks at the extremities (nowhere near the image), small scrapes in the upper margin of the central top vignette (of Douglass, Revels, and Delany). Margins untrimmed, and overall very good. An elaborate and colorful broadside celebrating the 15th Amendment which provided the vote to African-Americans, and which was ratified and adopted in late May, 1870. Sixteen vignettes surround a large central image of a grand celebratory parade of black soldiers and dignitaries that was held in Baltimore. Among those pictured are Frederick Douglass, Hiram R. Revels, Martin Delany, John Brown, Abraham Lincoln, President Ulysses S. Grant, and Vice President Schuyler S. Colfax. The other vignettes display ideals: African-American representatives in Congress, in the military, at the ballot box, reading the Emancipation Proclamation, practicing religion, in schools ("Education will prove the equality of the races"), at the altar, in family and fraternal groups, farming their own lands, etc. Colorful and bright, the publisher Kelly also issued a much smaller version of this print with some minor variations. Uncommon. Negro History: 1553-1903 #225.

Famous Doré illustrated edition of Cervantes with 120 full-page wood-engravings and 257 head- and tail-pieces by Gustave Doré, engraved by Héliodore Pisan.         In Fairyland A Series of Pictures from the Elf-World. With a Poem, by William Allingham.

London Longmans, Green, Reader, & Dyer 1870 - Richard Doyle’s Masterpiece [DOYLE, Richard, illustrator]. ALLINGHAM, William. In Fairyland. A Series of Pictures from the Elf-World. With a Poem, by William Allingham. London: Longmans, Green, Reader, & Dyer, 1870 [i.e., 1869]. First edition, published at Christmas 1869 and post-dated 1870. Folio (14 7/8 x 10 3/4 inches; 377 x 274 mm.). [8], 31, [1, blank] pp. Frontispiece and fifteen plates, engraved on wood and printed in color by Edmund Evans. Original green morocco-grain cloth decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt on front cover and decoratively stamped in gilt on spine. Back cover ruled in blind. All edges gilt. Some very minor marginal soiling to a few leaves, but the plates are totally free from the foxing found in almost all copies. A wonderful example of what is considered Richard Doyle’s masterpiece. "It is generally felt that Richard Doyle rose to his greatest heights with the graceful clusters of humanized and sentimentalized but endearing little elves he created for In Fairyland. In the case of this book the pictures preceded the text, a situation not uncommon in the history of illustrated children’s books. The Irish poet William Allingham wrote verses to accompany Doyle’s colorful fantasies. Edmund Evans produced the colored engravings; they are among the very finest examples of his work. Doyle’s illustrations for In Fairyland were used again, in 1884, to illustrate Princess Nobody, an original fairy tale for children by Andrew Lang" (Morgan Library, Early Children’s Books).
