        The 104th Psalm?

Vincent Brooks Day & Son, circa, London 1870 - Folding panorama in its original cloth boards, chromo-lithographic plates pasted together to form one continuous panorama 113 x 3660 mm.; fine, lettered in gilt to front. Unusually fine Victorian panorama. Beautiful coloured-lithographic panorama, as issued in its original decorated cloth boards: the series of 24 connected panels combine to illustrate Psalm 104, forming a continuous panorama over three-and-a-half metres in total. This copy is unusually fine; where seen, these fragile works more commonly display significant wear. The work has been featured in some detail online, testament to its visual impact (see for example a handsome commentary including a full reproduction at the Bridwell Library of Southern Methodist University in the USA). The panorama begins with an image of the psalmist, King David, covering his head in reverence to the Lord; at the end, he appears again, wearing a crown and playing his harp within his palace in Jerusalem. The remainder of the panorama consists of various landscapes teeming with life, as described in the psalm, and includes a scene showing the "leviathan" or whale. The panorama was designed by Susan Maria Ffarington (1809-1894), who illustrated several devotional books for children and also designed windows for parish churches near her estate at Worden Hall, Lancashire.         South Australia. Standing Rules and Orders for regulating the public business of the House of Assembly... [and three other works]

Adelaide: W.C. Cox, 1870. Four works bound together, duodecimo, owner's signatures on front end paper; fine, in a handsome crimson roan presentation binding, lettered in gilt to front and spine. First South Australian Speaker's guide, owned by the first Speaker. A charming and quite remarkable little volume, with four apparently unrecorded works relating to the establishment and running of South Australia's first representative parliament. Particularly notable is the fact that the first two more substantial publications print the rules and orders for public business and private bills in the House of Assembly, and must have been of invaluable assistance to the volume's original owner, Sir George Strickland Kingston, who, a manuscript note explains, was the first Speaker. Sir George Strickland Kingston (1807-1880) had promoted South Australian colonisation in 1834, and was appointed deputy surveyor general to the new colony two years later. Although he wore many hats in the colony during his long career, he was first elected to the Legislative Council in 1851, where he cemented his reputation as a 'republican and a fiery supporter of civil and religious liberty' (ADB). In the first parliament under responsible government in 1857, he was elected South Australia's first Speaker in the House of Assembly. The volume includes the rule and orders for "regulating the public business" in the lower house (xviii, 116 pp.); the rules and orders relating to Private Bills (v, 23 pp.); an 1856 "Act to establish a Constitution for South Australia" (drop-title, 18 pp.); and an 1858 "Act to confer certain Powers and Privileges on the Houses of Parliament of South Australia" (drop-title, 7 pp.). All four works were printed by the Government Printer Cox. A similar work was prepared for the Legislative Council in 1878 by the printer Spiller, but all of these earlier House of Assembly-related work appears to be unrecorded.

His assistant editor, Mr. W.H. Willis, negotiated for it, and it was finally acquired in March, 1856, the cheque for it being written on a Friday.         SUN PICTURES OF ROCKY MOUNTAIN SCENERY, WITH A DESCRIPTION OF THE GEOGRAPHICAL AND GEOLOGICAL FEATURES, AND SOME ACCOUNT OF THE RESOURCES OF THE GREAT WEST; CONTAINING THIRTY PHOTOGRAPHIC VIEWS ALONG THE LINE OF THE PACIFIC RAIL ROAD, FROM OMAHA TO SACRAMENTO

New York: Julius Bien, 1870.. viii,150pp. Thirty mounted albumen photographs. Large quarto. Half title. Contemporary three-quarter green morocco and cloth, spine gilt, a.e.g; rebacked, preserving the original spine. Corners heavily worn. Bookplate of noted collector Kenneth E. Hill on front pastedown. Images bright and clean, internally fresh. Very good. This impressive book, one of the standard pieces of photographically illustrated Western Americana, was prepared by the famous geologist, Ferdinand V. Hayden. The photographs, taken by A.J. Russell, appeared in a larger format the previous year in Russell's extremely rare album, THE GREAT WEST ILLUSTRATED. The views, depicting scenes along the line of the Union Pacific, are intended to illustrate the geology which can be observed from the train. Despite the title, all the photographs are of locales within the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada (twelve in Wyoming, sixteen in Utah, and two in California). Hayden wrote: "The pictures have been arranged so as to commence with the first range of mountains west of Cheyenne, and to continue thence to the Salt Lake Valley with the view that the book may be used as a guide by those who will avail themselves of the grand opportunities for geological study...." ^"In using Russell's photographs as illustrations in SUN PICTURES OF ROCKY MOUNTAIN SCENERY, geologist Hayden took the long view of history, emphasizing the value of pictures as documents of geological change while professing indifference to the more recent past. For Hayden, the geologic features of the West were like an open book, affording the educated reader the opportunity to understand millions of years of geologic history" - Sandweiss. HOWES H337.         A History of British Birds. Second edition

London: Bell and Daldy, 1870. Six volumes, quarto, with a total of 365 handcoloured plates; a fine and handsome set in the publisher's gilt decorated green cloth. Each species illustrated with a handcoloured plate. Second edition of the British ornithological opus, with seven additional plates not included in the first edition of 1851-1857. Francis Orpen Morris (1810-1893) exemplified the old generation of naturalist parsons. Devoted to both the ministry of his flock and the feathered members of his parish, Morris was renowned as a good natured and indefatigable fellow. Although in many respects conservative in his views (and staunchly opposed to Darwinism), Morris deserves recognition for his efforts to preserve bird habitats in the British countryside threatened by the industrialisation of agriculture. In 1885 Morris became a founding member of the Plumage League, an organisation devoted to the protection of birds. This set is justly famous for its impressive handcoloured plates; the colouring of this second edition is considered more successful as the plates were printed on pure white paper, unlike the cream tint of the first edition.

19th Century Album of Attractive Original Chinese Watercolours on ' Rice Paper ' or Pith Paper. The Chinese ' Aristocracy ' At Leisure

China: Unknown. Good with no dust jacket. c.1870. None given. Hardcover. Bound in the Original, Water- coloured illustrated, soft Silk covered boards. A Large Horizontal Album measuring 41 cms x 27 cms (16" x 10.5"). Covers are lightly stained/dusty, the silk at the edges is a little frayed here and there at the extremities, and both boards are detached - NO spine (I presume the spine was silk and has perished over time? ) , but the watercolours on the covers are bright and the covers are delightful and worth framing in their own right! . NO date given. Probably Mid to Late NINETEENTH Century, but could be as early as the1820s - the covers are certainly more Early 19th Century than later? . NO inscriptions or artist names/dates given. The style and subject matter are typical of export paintings made for export to a Western market or for foreign visitors to Canton’s markets during the late Qing Dynasty in the early to mid 19th century. The Album consists of 12 FINE WATERCOLOURS of the Chinese 'Aristocracy', together with their family and servants, 'at leisure' - playing instruments; playing chequers, smoking, dressing, playing with the children; etc, etc, all on delicate 'rice'/pith paper with silk ribbon borders. The first image is lacking 2 sides of the silk border and has a little loss to the fore-edge border with some splits to the paper, needing repairs, but nothing that can't be closed/repaired - carefully! . Of the remaining 11 images one has some loss to the blank front bottom corner, some have have some more minor cracks as usual, with the odd hole or track to mainly only the blank/edge sections of the paper, and two plates have lost one ribbon border each, but overall each illustration is bright, clean and VG. Very Attractive, Bright Watercolours and a Very Decorative album. See Images. The First (slightly damaged) plate is shown as Image 5. Further detail/images on request. ; Oblong Folio 13" - 23" tall .

Epistolae Indicae in quibus luculenta extat descriptio rerum nuper in India Orientali praeclarè gestarum à theologis societatis Jesu: ...(Colophon: Dillingen, Sebald Mayer, 1563). Small 8vo (15.5 x 10.5 cm). With 2 woodcut decorated initials (and 1 repeat) showing scenes with people, including a martyr being thrown into a well. Contemporary limp vellum (given a reddish-brown surface stain), leather thong ties.

De Backer & Sommervogel I, cols. 996-997; Bucker, Bibl. d. deutschen Drucke des XVI Jhts. I, Dillingen, p. 101, no. 172; Index Aureliensis 114322; Lach & Van Kley I, p. 431; VD 16, B-2149; W. van Nieuwenhoff, Gaspar Berse of de Nederlandsche Franciscus Xavierius (1870). First edition, in the original Latin, of two letters written in 1549 and 1551 by the Jesuit missionary Gaspar Berse (1515-1553) from Hormuz Island in the Gulf. They give a detailed account of the Malabar and Coromandel coasts in western and southern India, from the Gulf to Ceylon, and of Ceylon itself, especially concerning the Jesuit mission for the region. It was published posthumously by Sebald Mayer, the first printer in Dilingen, where he worked from 1550 to 1576. Berse, sometimes called "the Dutch Saint Francis Xavier", sent the two letters to his fellow Jesuits in Coimbra, Portugal in December 1549 and in 1551. They provided many Europeans with their first "modern" description of India and Ceylon. Some of the types were cut by Peter Schoeffer the younger, others by Guyot and Tavernier in Antwerp, Schoefer's 1537 italic used for the 17-page dedicatory preface, being the first (after one uninfluential predecessor) to use sloped capitals. It displaced Aldine-style italics through much of Europe and served as model for more elegant italics that set the style still used today. With a lovely 1574 inscription in reddish-brown ink in an Italian-style hand, mentioning the Count of Helfenstein in Gundelfingen in Swabia. In very good condition, with the spine somewhat faded.

Carte de Visite photograph of an Australian cricket team

Hamilton (Victoria): Dawson, circa, 1870. Small carte de visite photograph, 102 x 62 mm., embossed in blind lower left; very good. Wonderful formal photograph of an Australian cricket team from rural Victoria circa 1870, all twelve men posed casually in their whites, although one is wearing a candy-stripe jacket and another - the only man holding a cricket bat - is in a dark coat. Patrick Dawson may have been active by the early 1850s, but it is certain that by 1866 he had his own photographic studios in Grey Street, Hamilton and Liebig Street, Warnambool, because he gave both addresses when exhibiting at the 1866 Melbourne Intercolonial Exhibition. Around that time Hamilton became his main studio. The Dictionary of Australian Art suggests that Dawson was out of business by 1872. 'At Warrnambool in October 1867 the members of the Aboriginal cricket team about to tour England were individually photographed by Dawson together with their white managers. Only five of the thirteen Aborigines were posed in cricket flannels or holding bat or ball (and one of them did not sail to England); the rest were clad in ludicrously inappropriate athletics outfits and posed with boomerangs, spears and spear throwers, clubs and shields. The Europeans managing the team, on the other hand, were dressed in exemplary fashion: one as a (non-playing) cricketer, the second as a business manager (taken later seated in a studio) and the third as a gent in a top hat with bat tucked casually under his arm' (DAAO). It seems likely that the present image relates to the photographer Dawson's more famous portraits of the Indigenous Australian cricket team, taken before they toured England in 1867, and it is interesting to compare those portraits with the present team shot, which shows a local Victorian eleven. The figure in the foreground of this photograph bears a more than passing resemblance to one of the white managers photographed by Dawson as part of the Aboriginal tour, and such a connection seems very likely given the confluence of timing.
