        The Mystery of Edwin Drood

London: Chapman and Hall. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. FIRST EDITION in book form, exquisitely bound by Bayntun Riviere. In April 1870, "there appeared the first installment of Dickens's new novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, set mainly in Rochester ('Cloisterham') and planned for publication in eleven monthly instalments, the last one to be a double number. It was to be a murder story, 'the originality of which was to consist in the review of the murderer's career by himself at the close, when its temptations were to be dwelt upon as if, not he the culprit, but some other man were the tempted' (Forster, 808). It was the culmination of Dickens's lifelong fascination with the demeanour and psychology of murderers and he was, his daughter Katey remembered, 'quite as deeply fascinated and absorbed in the study of the criminal Jasper as in the dark and sinister crime that has given the book its title' ('"Edwin Drood" and the last days of Charles Dickens', Pall Mall Magazine, June 1906, 644). Drood was very favourably received, selling 10,000 more copies than Our Mutual Friend and showing in its descriptive passages, Forster believed, that Dickens's 'imaginative power was at its best' (Forster, 808). The story was to have been illustrated by Katey's husband, Charles Collins, but ill health compelled him to withdraw after designing the monthly-part cover and he was replaced by Luke Fildes. Dickens lived long enough to complete only six numbers of the novel, and soon a whole Drood 'industry' (which still flourishes today) grew up, concerned with providing a plausible solution to the mystery. Dickens was working on Drood in his little Swiss chalet (the gift of his actor friend Charles Fechter) in the garden at Gad's Hill on the morning of 8 June 1870, the day on which he later suffered a stroke from which he died the following day" (Dictionary of National Biography). With engraved frontispiece portrait, engraved title, and twelve illustrations by S. L. Fildes. London: Chapman & Hall, 1870. Octavo, recent full polished crushed morocco by Bayntun Riviere, with gilt-stamped portrait of Dickens on front board and gilt-stamped Dickens signature on rear board; gilt dentelles, marbled enepapers, all edges gilt. Tiny repair to corner of last leaf of text; text exceptionally clean. A beautiful copy.

        The Great Mississippi Steamboat Race

New York: Currier & Ives, 1870. AN ICONIC IMAGE OF A STEAMBOAT RACE ON THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER Paper size: 10" x 13" New York 1870 he Mississippi riverboat was second only to the cowboy as the quintessential American product. Indeed, Gulf Coast steamboats achieved such international popularity that wagers were placed as far away as Berlin and Vienna on the outcomes of the famous steamboat races down the Mississippi. Besides their profound economic and technological importance, steamboats also figured as important thematic elements in nineteenth-century European and American art, literature, speech and song. For example, within the works of Joseph Conrad, Charles Dickens, Edna Ferber, Jack London, Herman Melville, Eugene O'Neill, Robert Louis Stevenson and, of course, Mark Twain, steamers served variously as symbols for the contemporary pride and progress in technology, as metaphors for the conflict between man and nature, and as elements of plot and setting. This work wonderfully encapsulates the period of the steamboat's transportational and cultural dominance in the United States, a position soon to be usurped by the mighty railroads. .         The 104th Psalm

London: Vincent Brooks Day & Son, circa, 1870. Folding panorama in its original cloth boards, chromo-lithographic plates pasted together to form one continuous panorama 113 x 3660 mm.; fine, lettered in gilt to front. Unusually fine Victorian panorama. Beautiful coloured-lithographic panorama, as issued in its original decorated cloth boards: the series of 24 connected panels combine to illustrate Psalm 104, forming a continuous panorama over three-and-a-half metres in total. This copy is unusually fine; where seen, these fragile works more commonly display significant wear. The work has been featured in some detail online, testament to its visual impact (see for example a handsome commentary including a full reproduction at the Bridwell Library of Southern Methodist University in the USA). The panorama begins with an image of the psalmist, King David, covering his head in reverence to the Lord; at the end, he appears again, wearing a crown and playing his harp within his palace in Jerusalem. The remainder of the panorama consists of various landscapes teeming with life, as described in the psalm, and includes a scene showing the "leviathan" or whale. The panorama was designed by Susan Maria Ffarington (1809-1894), who illustrated several devotional books for children and also designed windows for parish churches near her estate at Worden Hall, Lancashire.

A fine copy.Charles James Apperley (1777-1843), English sportsman and sporting writer, better known as Nimrod, the pseudonym under which he published his works on the chase and on the turf. A devoted fox-hunter, around 1821 Apperley began to contribute a series of articles to The Sporting Magazine, under the pseudonym of "Nimrod," that covered horse races, hunt meets and other sporting events. His references to the personalities of the people he knew or met at such events helped to double the circulation of the magazine within a few years. Mr. Pittman, the proprietor of The Sporting Magazine, gave Nimrod a handsome salary and defrayed all the expenses of his tours. He also gave Nimrod a stud of hunters. After Pittman's death, the proprietors of the magazine sued Apperley for the money that had been advanced. To avoid imprisonment, Apperley moved to Calais in 1830, where he supported himself by writing.         [A complete set of] CopeÕs Tobacco Plant. Vol. I #1 through vol. II #130

Liverpool: Cope Brothers, 1870-1881. 3 vols., folio, later half red morocco, gilt tops, a bit worn but very good. A complete set, evidently extremely uncommon thus. The Arents copy with his personal bookplate, the collection bookplate, and the previous bookplate of Coker College Library (dated 1908), in all three volumes. Amongst the thousands of writers on tobacco, two pieces by Whitman (one prose, one verse) are included. Ã’Whitman probably was not aware of his first connection with Cope's Tobacco Plant, an English trade magazine published by the tobacco firm of Cope Brothers and Company in Liverpool, England. Edited by John Fraser, who was in charge of advertising for the company, the magazine was published from March 30, 1870 through January 1881, when it suddenly ceased publication. The January 1872 issue carried a series of poems about the pleasures of tobacco and smoking in the style of famous poets; one, falsely attributed to Whitman, was clearly meant to be a joke. The author of the poem is unknown. Although there is no record of what happened next, Fraser, an admirer of Whitman, evidently then invited the poet to submit some of his actual work. Whitman obliged by sending "Three Young Men's Deaths." That prose piece, which later appeared in Specimen Days, was published in April 1879, and in a letter to Fraser on November 27, 1878, Whitman asked for copies of the magazine to be sent to several British poets and writers, including William Rossetti and Tennyson. In the meantime, the British writer James Thomson published a series of five biographical essays on Whitman in the magazine throughout 1880. No correspondence survives that explains the appearance of Whitman's next contribution to Cope's, "The Dalliance of the Eagles," which appeared in November 1880 and for which he received payment of $10.00.Ó (The Walt Whitman Archive).

        The 104th Psalm?

Vincent Brooks Day & Son, circa, London 1870 - Folding panorama in its original cloth boards, chromo-lithographic plates pasted together to form one continuous panorama 113 x 3660 mm.; fine, lettered in gilt to front.
