(M.Schwartz & F. Rodhain) Garrison & Morton, 2481 ; Heirs of Hippocrates, 1017 ; Bulloch, p.183 ; Lechevalier & Solotorovsky, pp. 39-40 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Prima edizione di uno dei testi fondanti della medicina moderna, "the vestibule of the modern medicine" (Duveen). Rara.

1870 - (MASONRY). "WASHINGTON AS A FREEMASON." A color lithograph showing a full-length portrait of George Washington, dressed in a Masonic apron and holding a trowel in one hand and a mallet in the other, standing beneath a high arch which proclaims "Washington as a Freemason." The arch is supported by a series of receding columns; each column has a capital belonging to a different order. Supporting the central arch, and on either side of it, is a gothic construction of arches and quatrefoil windows; each compartment is filled with either an illustration or an object which is emblematic of Masonry (i.e., an open casket with a shovel and a mallet nearby), or personifications of virtues (Fortitude, Prudence, Temperance, and Justice). Two of the panels contain a eulogistic poem to Wahington, and several of the architectural elements are printed with brief facts about his life (i.e., his date of birth and death, President of the United States, his date of initiation into Masonry and degrees of progress therein, etc.). On either side of the arch, at the top of the gothic towers, are portraits of two other notable Masons, the Marquis de Lafayette and President Andrew Jackson, which are draped with American flags. Cincinnati, OH: J. H.Powers & Co., Fraternity Publishers, 1870. Printed by Strobridge & Company, also of Cincinnati. 22 1/2 by 17 1/2 inches, framed. There is a tiny hole in one margin; otherwise this is a clean and fresh print.

        Sperm Whaling with its Varieties.

Boston: Benjamin Russell, 1870. - Single sheet, float mounted and framed, (21 ¼ x 36 ¼ inches). Fine lithographed print with printed color, finished by hand. First edition. Lithographed by Bufford after the drawing by Russell. "Bufford made what are probably among the very best of the whaling lithographs" (Peters, p. 124). Subtitled: "Waiting a Chance. Setting on the Whale. Ship Cutting In. Just Fastening. Fast Changing Ends. Dead Whale Waif'd. Fast Boat Rolling up Sail. Whale Sounding. Mate Running. Trying Out. Stove Boat. Towing Whale to Ship. Whale in a flurry (Dying)." This engaging, large-scale lithograph depicts the various stages and methods of whaling as it was practiced along the coast of the United States in the 19th century. Benjamin Russell was in a unique position to portray the intensity of whaling. A native of New Bedford, Massachusetts - the center of the American whaling industry - he had spent four years on a whaler in the 1840s and thereafter devoted himself to painting watercolor marine scenes. His personal experiences of whaling allowed him to imbue this image with a sense of realism that is lacking in contemporary scenes of the same subject, which tend towards romanticized embellishments. As such, this lithograph gives a more faithful and informative - yet equally dramatic - picture of the practice of whaling, then a crucial part of American industry. The lithographer, John Bufford, is equally notable. After working for Nathaniel Currier in New York, he returned to his home of Boston to establish his own company. Among his many apprentices was Winslow Homer, who went on to become one of the first American artists of international renown. Like Currier & Ives, J. H. Bufford & Co. produced a vast amount of exceedingly popular imagery regarding all aspects of American life. Yet Bufford is most known for scenes such as this one, and the whaling lithographs produced by his firm are by far the best of his time. This particularly vivid image is considered one of the two most desirable that Bufford published, and is of considerable rarity today. See Harry T. Peters, "America on Stone." For more information about this lithograph, or a warm welcome to see it and other books and prints in our library at 72nd Street, NYC, please contact Megan Scauri, M.A., M.L.S., in the Rare Book Department.         TRANS - CONTINENTAL. "Published Daily on the Pullman Hotel Express between Boston and San Francisco." Volume I. Nos 1 - 12. May 24, 1870 - July 4, 1870

Divers cities:. 1870.. 10-1/8" x 7-1/4". 1st printing (Howes S-929). 12 issues [complete], of 4 pp each.. Bound in the publisher's original purple cloth binding, with gilt stamped lettering & train device to front board (professionally recased).. Spine very sun-tanned, with splay & wear to boards. Ex-library, with. bookplate to front paste-down. Occasional edge chipping to leaves.. A Good- plus to About VG copy of this fragile item.. The 12 issues of this paper, printed on a Gordon Press in the baggage car, which led an 8 Pullman car train, were published over the course of 6 weeks while the Boston Board of Trade, headed by the Hon. Alexander H. Rice, journeyed 3000+ miles to San Francisco to meet with the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. The paper, in what it reported, was much like any other: for example, besides reporting the normal business of the train & its passengers, in the first issue, we see that the Athletics of Philadelphia beat Harvard Base Ball Club 20-8 ...The office for this paper, the editor tells us, was located in the second car... a "very handsome smoking car, divided into 4 rooms." Of particular note to bibliophiles is the fact that the train was equipped with "two well- stocked libraries, replete with choice works of fiction, history, poetry, etc." Each issue recorded a different locale on the masthead, with the first issue proclaiming Niagara Falls, on to Omaha, Cheyenne, Ogden, Salt Lake City, Summit Sierra Nevadas Cal, San Francisco [where the train stopped in front of the Grand Hotel], Promontory Point Utah, Laramie, Grand Island Nebraska, Burlington Iowa and finally, Boston itself. A somewhat uncommon item in the trade, generally regarded as the first newspaper to be printed on a moving train. . Masthead vignette of train. Occasional cut.

WORKS OF SHAKSPERE. Edited by Charles Knight

New York Virtue and Yorston. n.d., circa 1870 - 2 volumes. The Imperial Edition, the best edition of the publisher and editor. Profusely illustrated throughout with very fine full-page steel engravings by select artist, vignette half-title and portrait frontispiece. Large Folio, (15" x 11"), in the publisher’s very deluxe and impressive binding of full dark brown morocco handsomely decorated with wide ornate panels in blind featuring round portrait corner piece portraits of Shakespearian characters in bright gilt, all surrounding a full gilt panel featuring a bust of Shakespeare, urn and shield and rich ornate lettering. The spines are decorated in similar style with tall gilt stippled raised bands, panels in blind, bright gilt lettering and gilt tools in the center of each compartment, board edges and turn-ins gilt decorated, fine marbled end-papers and a.e.g. An extremely fine and unusually attractive set. The books are near as pristine with fresh white paper, the bindings bright and exceptionally well preserved. AN ABSOLUTELY SUPERB SET OF THIS IMPORTANT EDITION IN ITS VERY BEST FORMAT. Truly an edition, printing and binding well suited for the greatest writer of the language. It is also vivid proof that an American publisher could produce a Shakespeare as handsome and fitting as any of their British counterparts. "The text given by Mr. Knight. is founded upon the most careful collations; and a reason is assigned in those editions for every deviation from the received text of the modern copies. To print the Text of the Words of Shakespeare, such as we may judge that it proceeded from his pen, so as to make his real words accessible to all, is the object." [Attributes: Soft Cover]
