Statuten des Corps Germania [bzw. Frankonia]. Graz, um 1870.

Contributions to the Theory of Natural Selection. A series of essays. FIRST EDITION.

Macmillan & Co. 1870 43pp cata. (Jan. 1870). Orig. green cloth by Burn & Co.; very sl. rubbing to tail of spine, corners sl. bumped, hinges starting. v.g.Published in 1858, Wallace's essay 'On the Tendency of Varieties to Depart Indefinitely from the Original Type', published beside excerpts from an essay by Darwin, established him, with Darwin, as the co-founder of the theory of natural selection. Although Wallace describes himself in the preface as the 'independent originator' of the evolutionary theory, he was not in competition with Darwin. 'I have felt all my life that Mr Darwin had been at work long before me, and that it was not left for me to write "The Origin of the Species". I have long since measured my own strength, and I know well that it would be unequal to that task'.

        La Bonne Chanson.

      - Paris, Alphonse Lemerre, 1870. [Attributes: First Edition]

A 3-PAGE AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY THE POSITIVIST JOURNALIST DAVID GOODMAN CROLY, Addressed to the American Philosopher and Historian JOHN FISKE.

March 6, 1870.. 1870.. Good. - Octavo, 7-7/8 inches high by 5 inches wide. Approximately 250 words penned on three sides of a folded sheet with Croly's monograph embossed in blind at the top of the first page and the text of the third page penned vertically on the verso of the first. A substantial letter addressed to the American philosopher and historian John Fiske in which David Goodman Croly discusses plans for the first issue of the "Modern Thinker": "I enclose another prospectus of the 'Modern Thinker,' the first number of which I hope to have out by June...." and suggests that Fiske might have an interest in becoming an editor for the periodical: "I shall myself get out the first two numbers but if the means can be raised you will probably be invited to act as editor of the subsequent publications...." Wanting to make an impression and "shock people" he asks if Fiske can help "not in money but in the furnishing of one striking article...." Signed "D.G. Croly". Folded for mailing, there is some slight minor smudging and soiling. The letter was once tipped into a scrapbook as attested by some light glue stains to the blank page. A RARE autograph. <p>The Irish-born American Journalist David Goodman Croly (1829-1889) was associated with the New York "Evening Post" and the "Herald" before moving on as managing editor of the "World". During the Civil War, he sought to discredit the Lincoln administration and the abolitionist movement by co-authoring an anonymous pamphlet purporting to be written by an abolitionist who promoted the intermarriage between whites and blacks. This 1864 pamphlet, titled "Miscegenation" played on the racist fears common among people of the period. In effect, Croly coined the term miscegenation for the first time. In 1870, Croly published the journal "The Modern Thinker" under the pseudonym of David Goodman. The journal was a vehicle for the positivist and Spencerian philosophy of Croly and some of his colleagues including John Humphrey Noyes. The periodical ran from 1870 through 1873, a total of only 3 issues. Among other works, Croly authored a "Primer of Posivitism" (1876) and the early attempt at futurology "Glimpses of the Future: Suggestions as to the Drift of Things" (1888). It is interesting to note that David Goodman Croly was the father of Herbert Croly, the co-founder of the Progressve periodical "The New Republic".<p>The American philosopher and historian John Fiske (1842-1901) was one of the leading popularizers of Spencer's theory of social evolution and published several articles and reviews for The Modern Thinker.<p>A review of the periodical published in "The Journal of Anthropology, Volume 1, No. 3 (Jan 1871)" page 355, reads: "The following extract from the introductory 'Egotisms' of the editor will show the position intended to be occupied by this new American periodical. 'The projector of The Modern Thinker is a Positivist, of the school of Auguste Comte. He does not, however, unqualifiedly accept all the speculations of that great philosopher. It is his desire to be liberal, and to open the pages of this publication to the representatives of all the advanced schools of thought, especially to the adherents of Herbert Spencer and John Stuart Mill.' The questions treated of in the present number are full of interest, and they are discussed with ability, and with praiseworthy absence of dogmatism. Amongst the best articles are 'The Last Word about Jesus,' by John Fiske...."<p>"The most fantastic of [David] Croly's literary undertakings - a radical periodical entitled The Modern Thinker - appeared in 1871 [actually 1870]. 'No journal heretofore published in the United States,' he announced, 'has made it its special business to give expression to the advanced thought of the time on philosophical, scientific, and religious questions.' The Modern Thinker would 'employ the best minds of the age as contributors.' And Croly mentioned Spencer, Huxley, George Eliot, Ernest Renan, Darwin, and the four leading disciples of Auguste Comte: Littre, Harrison, Bridges, and Congreve. Although the contributors proved to be somewhat less spectacular than advertized, they were distinguished, and the new magazine was intelligent, provocative, and filled with radical ideas." -- David W. Levy: "Herbert Croly of the New Republic: The Life and Thoughts of an American Progressive" (Princeton University Press, 1984).

        The Heathen Chinee.

The Western News Company. Chicago. 1870. - 9 loose black and white lithographs, 7 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches, with original decorative envelope (7 3/4 x 6 inches). Light soiling, edge tears and wear to envelope, plus previous owner's name and date (July 3 1871) in ink and pencil to front cover. Toning to first sheet, otherwise very clean and bright. The lithographic printing of this set is particularly strong. A superior example of this unusual set. This is the first printing of the first independent (pirated) issue of Harte's poem, which first appeared as "Plain Language from Truthful James" in the September 1870 issue of the Overland Monthly( which Harte edited). Harte evidently wrote the poem as a space-filler and a satire on the anti-Chinese immigration sentiments of the Irish immigrant community, as expressed by the card sharp Bill Nye on sheet 6, "we are ruined by chinese cheap labor." In fact it was to have the opposite from desired effect (see the excellent article by Gary Scharnhorst "Ways That Are Dark": Appropriations of Bret Harte's "Plain Language from Truthful James" in Nineteenth-Century Literature, Volume 51, No. 3 December 1996.) Hull's illustrations added fuel to the popular racist reading of the poem, embellishing the poem with a scene of mob violence. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Original study for The Sirens

1870 - BURNE-JONES, Edward. Large original study for The Sirens. No place, circa 1870. Colored chalks on brown paper, handsomely matted and framed. Image measures 14 by 18 inches; entire framed piece measures 19 by 25 inches. $16,500.Splendid original chiaroscuro colored chalk drawing, a large preliminary compositional study for The Sirens.Burne-Jones, leading painter and designer of Victorian England and among the most important of the Pre-Raphaelite artists, is best known for his collaborations with William Morris, for whom he designed stained glass and tapestries and illustrated some of the Kelmscott Press publications, including the magnificent 1896 Kelmscott Chaucer. Of his own haunting work he stated, "I mean by a picture a beautiful romantic dream, of something that never was, never will be"" in a light better than any that ever shone"" in a land no-one can define or remember, only desire"" and the forms divinely beautiful"&#157; (Chilvers, 79-80). This beautiful work is a preliminary compositional study for The Sirens, which Burne-Jones began to paint in 1870 but, despite many attempts over two decades, was never able to finish. The allegory of shipwreck does, nonetheless, appear in other of his works, including The Voyage to Vineland (stained glass window) and The Holy Grail (tapestry). A pastel [circa 1875] in a Spanish private collection and a watercolor [circa 1875] in the South African National Gallery are both reminiscent of this drawing. Exhibited: Mass Gallery (1967); Piccadilly Gallery (1971); Grolier Club (1971). Provenance: Virginia Surtees; Hartnoll and Eure; Kenneth A. Loft; Frederick R. Koch; Sotheby's.A lovely original work, wonderfully framed.

1870 - (GARFIELD, James) HUNT, T. Sterry, et al. [Bound collection of 13 pamphlets relating to the production and taxation of salt]. Montreal, et al.: Dawson, et al., 1870-72. Thirteen pamphlets bound in one volume. Octavo, contemporary three-quarter brown morocco rebacked to match original, raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers. $2500.Interesting, annotated collection of pamphlets relating to the mining, manufacture and imposition of duties on salt, compiled and bound together for then-Congressman James A. Garfield, with his bookplate."Although in 1868 Garfield supported the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson, he felt increasingly uncomfortable in the role of firebrand. His interests shifted to matters of financial policy. He advocated lower tariffs (except for items produced in his district) and was an avid crusader for hard money.         Milano

1870 ca..

        Vikram and the Vampire.

London: Longmans, Green, and Co.,, 1870. or Tales of Hindu Devilry. Octavo (125 × 185 mm). Bound in recent black morocco by the Chelsea Bindery, titles to spine gilt, raised bands, single rule to boards gilt, twin rule to turn-ins gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. With 33 illustrations by Ernest Griset. First page partly split from spine. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. Originally issued serially in Fraser's Magazine during 1868. The collection is an abbreviated version of the Baital-Pachisi [Twenty-five Tales of a Vampire] - "an old and thoroughly Hindu repertory. It is a rude beginning of that fictitious history which ripened to the Arabian Nights' Entertainments, and which fostered by the genius of Boccaccio, produced the romance of the chivalrous days, and its late development, the novel - that prose epic of modern Europe ? It is not pretended that the words of these Hindu tales are preserved to the letter ? I have ventured to remedy the conciseness of their language, and to clothe the skeleton with flesh and blood" (Introduction).

Complete set of French nineteenth-century children's alphabet blocks

France: circa, 1870. Some repairs to reverse of the five paper guiding sheets.. Game comprising 24 timber blocks, each papered with illustrations on each face, with six chromolithographic paper guiding sheets each measuring 177 x 262 mm., original box with papered lid. French alphabet blocks, comprising a game for children wherein the blocks are rearranged on their different faces to form a picture alphabet with various items and animals including a zebra, duck, and a kangaroo. The set includes the original box accompanied by the six lithographic sheets that were dissected and pasted to the blocks (five of the sheets are loose, while one sheet is pasted to the front cover of the box itself). As such, these sheets form a guide for youngsters to reassemble the blocks accordingly, and learn the alphabet in the process. As the game is not titled, and none of its parts or packaging bears the details of the lithographer; details of its production are scant and it cannot be traced through the usual bibliographies. Nonetheless, it is most unusual to find an item for children of this age and composite nature in such good condition.

        The Mystery of Edwin Drood

London - Chapman & Hall, 1870 Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. First edition.. A first edition of Dickens' Edwin Drood, bound in full calf, and illustrated by S. L. Fildes. Edwin Drood is famously unfinished: Dickens died while writing it, and the ending is unknown. Supplying endings has occupied writers ever since. However, most consider it possible to identify 'the murderer' from the hints within the extant book. With twelve plates of illustrations. Fildes worked in the social realist style, reflecting his lifelong concern for the plight of the poor and for social reform. While only some of the illustrations within this work reflect this concern, the expressive power of his black-and-white style is in evidence, and the illustrations add materially to the appeal of the book. Handsomely presented in full calf, with a frontispiece showing the author's portrait and an engraved half title. Condition: In a full calf binding with gilt borders and gilt detailing to the spine. Externally very smart with some light marking to the boards and light rubbing to the extremities. With a personal bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, the frontispiece and engraved half title are somewhat spotted. Otherwise with only the odd spot here and there throughout. Overall: NEAR FINE.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1870 - 1870 Wisden Original Wrappers

On offer here is a very rare 1870 Wisden still in it's original wrappers and in very good overall condition. As can be seen from the photographs, the front and rear wrappers are a little marked - mainly foxing. A facsimile spine has been added to the book in recent times. That repair was not carried out by me, but I suspect that at one time the book was rebound in hard boards and at some stage the book has been taken out of the boards and a facsimile spine attached. Internally, the title page and the first few pages have some foxing as do the last couple of pages but otherwise the contents are in excellent, clean, unmarked condition - most unusual for a book of this vintage. Overall, a really nice example.

5 eigenh. Briefe mit U. Meist Wien, [um 1870].

Annual Report of the Smithsonian Institution (82 volume set) (1870-1964, with some gaps)

Washington : Smithsonian Institution 1870 - Massive 82 volume set. Hardcover, most in Smithsonian green cloth, with Smithsonian Seal in Gold on most front boards. Institutional stamp on title pages. Numerous plates and photographs throughout text. Some color plates, fold out maps. Most volumes in excellent shape, with tight bindings and attractive covers. Approximately 4 volumes have weak bindings or cracked spine hinges. Containing bound editions of the years: 1870, 1891-1910; 1912-1929 (61 vols.); 1950-1964 (17 vols.); as well as the 1849-1964 index volume and two additional volumes of Proceedings (1903), geographical tables. A mammoth collection spanning 94 years of the Smithsonian's history. Leonard Carmichael, Secretary of the Smithsonian, states that the Annual reports "a selection of papers (some of them original) embracing a considerable range of scientific investigation and discussion. The subjects treated in Smithsonian Report articles cover almost the entire gamut of scientific disciplines. If any subjects predominate they would be in the general fields of biology, geology, and anthropology." As well as, "astronomy, physics, chemistry, meteorology, medicine, and engineering." "Many of the earlier Reports contain articles of great historical interest as recording scientific discoveries which have exerted vast influence on the lives of all of us up to the present time. For example, Roentgen records in the 1897 Report his history of the penetrating radiation which he called X-rays. The beginnings of practical human flight are recorded by Wilbur Wright in the 1902 Report and Orville Wright in that for 1914. And by Wendell M. Stanley's attempt to relate viruses to cancer, genes, and life in the Report for 1957." (Carmichael, Index to Smithsonian Annual Reports, iii, iv p.) Please note that our set includes all of these groundbreaking reports. See the 1897 Report, "X-Rays," by W.C. Rontgen, p. 137-155. See 1902, "Some Aeronautical Experiments," Wilbur Wright, p. 133-148. (With photographic plates!). 1914, "Stability of Aeroplanes," Orville Wright, p. 209-222 (With photographic plates!). 1957, "The nature of viruses, cancer, genes, and life," Wendell M. Stanley, p. 357-370. Another interesting article from the 1927 Report is authored by Albert Einstein, "Isaac Newton," p. 201-207. In this article Einstein discusses Newton's work and lays out its limitations. He goes on to propose a General Theory of Relativity. (The next article is also fascinating, "The Nucleus of the Atom," by J.A. Crowther, discussing Bohr's theory of X-ray spectra and the discoveries of Ellis and Meitner.) Smithsonian gold seal on cover reads: "For the Increase and Diffusion of Knowledge Among Men." Note: Lacks the 1911 Report. This is an oversized or heavy set, which requires additional postage for international delivery outside the US. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
