Das Judenthum in der musik von Richard Wagner

Verlagbuchhandblung Von J. J. Weber, 1869. In 8, cm 15 x 22, pp. 58. Brunitura omogenea alle prime e ultime carte. Mezza tela coeva. TED

        Osnovy Khimii [Principles of Chemistry]

St. Petersburg: Tip. Tovarishchestro "Obschestvennaja Pol'za", , 1869. Hardcover. Near Fine. 8vo [17.5 x 11 cm], . vol. 1: (1) f. half-title, (1) f. title, (2) ff. with pages ii and iii numbered, 816 pp.; vol. 2: (1) f. half-title, (1) f. title, (1) folding periodic table, 951 pp., (1) p., vol. 1 with 151 numbered illustrations in text and vol. 2 with 28 numbered illustrations in text. Half bound in contemporary black calf & dark green and black glazed marbled boards, spine in 4 compartments, author and title gold & owner's initials (E.R.) gold tooled on spine, pink silk ribbon bookmarks. Faint remnant of sticker on upper board of vol. 2. Joints slightly worn and a bit tender, negligible wear to spines and boards, minor discoloration to upper right corner of first few and final few leaves of both volumes (from binder's glue), ownership inscription (E. O. Romanova, dated 1871) and ink notes on front flyleaf of volume 1, faint pencil annotations in margins of some sections, minor marginal tear at p. 81 of first volume. Excellent. A fine copy - highly unusual for this book - of the rare first edition of Dimitri Mendeleev's Principles of Chemistry, containing the first appearance of the periodic table of the elements. Mendeleyev was a Russian chemist "whose name will always be linked with his outstanding achievement, the development of the periodic table. He was the first chemist to understand that all elements are related members of a single ordered system. He converted what had hitherto been a highly fragmented and speculative branch of chemistry into a true, logical science . According to Mendeleyev the properties of the elements, as well as those of their compounds, are periodic functions of their atomic weights (relative atomic masses). In 1869, he stated that 'the elements arranged according to the magnitude of atomic weights show a periodic change of properties'" (Hutchinson, Dictionary of Scientific Biography, pp. 475). "Mendeleyev compiled the first true periodic table, listing all 63 elements then known. Not all elements would 'fit' properly using the atomic weights of the time, so he altered iridium from 76 to 114 (modern value 114.8) and beryllium from 13.8 to 9.2 (modern value 9.013) . Also, in order to make the table work Mendeleyev had to leave gaps, and he predicted that further elements would eventually be discovered to fit these predictions provided the strongest endorsement of the periodic law" (Hutchinson, Dictionary of Scientific Biography, pp. 475-76). "Mendeleev's first report of his discoveries was "Opyt sistemy elementov, osnovannoy na ikh atomnom vese I khimicheskom skhodstve" (Attempt at a system of elements based on their atomic weight and chemical affinity)' (DSB, p. 288). This in fact is in Osnovy khimii, and is the heading to the periodic table that appears on p. [iv] of the preface, which is dated March 1869. Mendeleev had discovered the periodic arrangement on March 1 1869, and immediately sent his draft to the printers for inclusion in the first part of his textbook Osnovy khimii, which had been printed but not yet distributed. The appearance of the table is from the same setting of type as two single-sheet printings, with legends in French and Russian, which were printed at the same time for presentation to colleagues. Mendeleev then at a later date presented a slightly modified version, with different title, to the Russian Chemical Society, in whose Journal it was published (this is the work cited by Horblit). The Journal version uses the same setting of type of the table itself (with minor variations due to locking up the type a second time), but with a different heading and additions to the text. It is therefore the second printing, with a revised text. Mendeleev himself makes clear, in the preface to the fifth edition of the Osnovy khimii, that he first published the periodic table in the first edition of this work...

[THE BOOK THAT ENCOURAGED MARX TO LEARN RUSSIAN] Polozhenie rabochego klassa v Rossii [i.e. The condition of the working class in Russia]

St. Petersburg: N.P. Polyakova, 1869. [6], II, 494 pp. 1 map (carefully restored). 8vo. Contemporary quarter-leather. Good condition. First edition. Vassily Vasilievich Bervi-Flerovsky's (1829-1918) main work was nicknamed the Russian Das Kapital; its description of Russian economic reality was thoroughly Marxist. In turn, it influenced Marx himself. He started to learn Russian in 1869 in order to read this book that had already been praised by Engels. Marx was planning to focus heavily on Russia in the third volume of Das Kapital (specifically, on Russian agrarian relations). Marx commented later: "The work by Flerovskii is a real discovery for Europe. Russian optimism which has been put about on the continent even by so-called revolutionists, has been mercilessly exposed in this work. The virtues of the book are not diminished if I say that it is in several places not fully up to critical standards, from the purely scholarly point of view. This is a work of a serious observer, a dispassionate laborer, and an impartial critic, a powerful artist, etc..." Flerovsky was praised widely and the impact he had in Russia was immense. He was one of the ideologues of the narodnichestvo (Populist) movement, living his life in "voluntary poverty" along with the peasants and lower classes of Russian society in order better to understand them. His economics and lifestyle earned him widespread support among students and the middle-classes. He was routinely compared to Tolstoy in the extent (though not the nature) of the influence both men exerted on the minds of the people. Most of Flerovsky's works were banned in Russia as he was an open revolutionary. Though the first edition of this book was banned, it sold so quickly that it was not possible to destroy the whole run; but the second edition, printed in 1872, was completely destroyed (2465 copies). Svodny katalog russkoy nelegalnoy i zaprechennoy pechati XIX veka. 187.

        Manifest Kommunisticheskoj partii.

[Geneva, Louis Czerniecki, 1869]. - 8vo (117 x 186 mm). 23, (1) pp. With original printed title label on front flyleaf. Contemp. red half cloth with gilt title to cloth on front board. In green custom-made morocco-backed slipcase with chemise. First edition of the first Russian translation of the Communist Manifesto, Marx and Engels' groundbreaking work of communist propaganda, "undoubtedly the most widespread, the most international production of all Socialist literature, the common platform acknowledged by millions of working men from Siberia to California" (preface to the 1888 edition). In the words of the British economist Harold Laski, the Manifesto is "admitted by every serious student of society to be one of the outstanding documents of all time". It also constitutes an early sum of Marx' and Engels' ideas, later to become known under the heading of 'scientific socialism': "[L]e manifeste renferme en puissance la quasi-totalité des idées élaborées par ses deux auteurs dans leurs ouvrages ultérieurs et qui, dans leur ensemble, représentent ce qu'ils appellent le socialisme scientifique; la seul exception importante est la théorie de la plus-value" (Andréas, p. 1). - This first Russian translation was prepared by the anarchist Mikhail Bakunin, "who despite being one of Marx and Engels' most pronounced opponents in the working class movement, saw the great revolutionary importance contained within the Manifesto" (note to the preface of the 1882 Russian translation). Due to state censorship, publication in Russia was out of the question. The printer, Louis (Ludwik) Czerniecki, was a Polish emigré who had come to Switzerland via London with the Russian revolutionary democrat Alexander Herzen. His Polish printing press served the Free Russian Press, in especial Herzen's paper "Kolokol" ("The Bell"), the Russian emigrants' leading organ of the time. Prior to this translation, the only bits of the Manifesto to reach Russian readers were a single sentence in the radical St. Petersburg journal "Sovremnik" (12/1858), reminiscent of the Manifesto's famous final sentence, and a paraphrase of the beginning of Section I that appeared as an introduction to a German-translated article in "Zagranicnij Vestnik" (6/1864). Neither of these publications cited their source. Unbeknownst to either author, it would be Russia where the Revolution heralded by the Manifesto would finally take place, under the leadership of their disciple Lenin who did not discover Marxism until after Marx's death (but who was later to prepare his own translation of the Communist Manifesto). - Engels, in his preface to the 1888 English edition of the Manifesto, stated in twofold error that "the first Russian translation, made by Bakunin, was published at Herzen's 'Kolokol' office in Geneva, about 1863; a second one, by the heroic Vera Zasulich, also in Geneva, 1882". In fact, Bakunin's version appeared in 1869, and the 1882 translation, with a preface by the authors, is by Georgi Plekhanov. Neither Marx nor Engels appears ever to have owned a copy of this Russian translation. Shrewdly, it was issued without wrappers or title page, with no mention of place or year, editor, printer, or translator. The printed title label present in our copy is also confirmed in the single other copy available for comparison (Geneva). Extremely rare: the only known copy in private hands; only three other copies are known in libraries worldwide (Bibliothèque de Genève; Institute of Marxism-Leninism of the Central Committee of the CPSU; Russian State Library/Gos. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina; photocopies in the Andréas and Feltrinelli collections). - A bit of wear to extremities. Binding very slightly loosened; gutter of flyleaf and first leaf inconspicuously reinforced. All in all very well preserved. Andréas 54. OCLC 717010404 (Bibliothèque de Genève, BGE Brsl 954/10). Rubel 70 (note, "1859" in error). Marx-Engels Erstdrucke p. 15, note 1. Cf. PMM 326. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

THE BOOK THAT ENCOURAGED MARX TO LEARN RUSSIAN] Polozhenie rabochego klassa v Rossii [i.e. The condition of the working class in Russia]

N.P. Polyakova, St. Petersburg 1869 - [6], II, 494 pp. This is a work of a serious observer, a dispassionate laborer, and an impartial critic, a powerful artist, etc." Flerovsky was praised widely and the impact he had in Russia was immense.

1869 Wisden Almanack Cricketers Almanac, Facsimile Wrappers

On offer here is an 1869 Wisden Almanack Cricketers Almanac in entirely original condition apart from the facsimile wrappers. 1869 is commonly regarded as the second scarcest Wisden Almanack after the 1875 edition. The copy on offer here has been recently fitted with facsimile wrappers which are in excellent, as new condition. The remainder of the book is entirely original. The title page has the odd very minor mark and the contents page has a little, very light foxing as does the last page - at page 120. Apart from this the contents are in absolutely immaculate, clean condition - original, unmarked and clean. A really excellent example of a very scarce year.
