Introductory lecture delivered in the university of edinburgh. November 8, 1869

Edinburgh: Edmondston and Douglas, 1869. 22pp. Original wraps, with title to upper wrap. A fine presentation copy, with only slight marking, inscribed 'From the author' to head of title. Joseph Lister (1827-1912), English physician and founder of anti-septic surgery. After eight years as the Professor of Surgery at Glasgow University, Lister left in 1869 to take up the professorship of clinical surgery at Edinburgh. This first lecture outlines his germ theory of putrefaction: 'the germ-theory declares that the putrefaction of organic substances under atmospheric influence is not effected, as used to be supposed, by the oxygen of the air, but by living organisms developed from germs floating in the atmosphere as constituents of its dust'. Significant in itself as scientific theory, for Lister it was of particular significance given that his antiseptic system of surgical treatment aimed to avoid putrefaction by guarding against germs. As this copy is of the same provenance as similar offprints and pamphlets presented to Dr Lonsdale of Cumberland Infirmary, it is likely that he was the recipient of this presentation copy. . First edition. 8vo.

"It drew heavily on the works of Sadi Carnot, Clapeyron, Holzmann, and Joule, although it was far more comprehensive than those previous treatise". Norman I, 1039 ; DSB VI, pp. 241 et suiv. ; Dibner, Herald & Science n° 159 (pour l édition originale allemande). Exemplaire non rogné.

        V. von Richter, aus St. Petersburg am 17. October 1869" [Correspondence from St Petersburg] ["Die Beziehungen Zwischen Den Eigenschaften Der Elemente Und Ihrer"] in Berichte der Deutschen Chemischen Gesellschaft 2 pp. 553-555, 1869

FIRST EDITION IN GERMAN OF MENDELEEV'S FIRST PERIODIC TABLE PUBLISHED IN THE SAME YEAR AS THE RUSSIAN ORIGINAL; INCLUDES THE TABLE ITSELF; ASSOCIATION COPY HOUSING A LETTER FROM THOMAS GRAHAM, THE FOUNDER OF COLLOIDAL CHEMISTRY TO THE GERMAN CHEMIST AUGUST WILHELM VON HOFMANN. The letter is dated and signed and appears on an endpaper of heavier weight than the pages of text; it appears to have been tipped in at some point after publication - this likely due to the import of the scientists; as well, Graham died just before the volume came out. The letter is dated in 1868 and the 1869 volume houses a portrait honoring Graham and noting his recent death. The letter thanks Hoffman for his contribution to Graham's recent induction as an honorary member of the Berlin Chemical Society. Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev was a Russian chemist, the first to understand that all elements are related members of a single ordered system. He converted a fragmented and speculative branch of chemistry into logical science, announced initially in 1869 in a one page bulletin with the Russian Chemical Society. That same year the system was announced in three German language publications: Journal für praktische Chemie, Zeitschrift für Chemie and this journal, the journal of the German Chemical Society, Berichte der Deutschen Chemischen Gesellschaft. Even after his discovery, Mendeleev "tirelessly labored at the clarification, illustration, refinement, and optimization of his periodic classification of the elements" (Thyssen, Mendeleev, 1); the import of this German copy is that it reproduces the first periodic table Mendeleev produced. All three German papers are abstracts, each with a role in spreading word of Mendeleev's discovery. Priority among the papers has not been firmly established and each has its quirks: The Journal abstract depicts Mendeleev's table only, absent any information; the Zeitschrift abstract has the table and a discussion, but famously contains a translation error about which Mendeleev was furious ('gradual' vs 'periodic'). Mendeleev blamed the error on Lothar Meyer and this would go on to fuel contention between them for many years (Biagioli, Nature, 71). In the journal offered here, the original table appears and "correspondent Viktor von Richter [reports] on the interesting relationships in the system of elements that Mendeleev had developed. He [notes] that Mendeleev believed the atomic weights were the 'really consistent' property of the elements. He also [gives] a short excerpt of the system and [mentions] the review in Zeitschrift which describes the contents of Mendeleev's paper on the relationships between the properties of the elements and their atomic weights" (Kaji, Early Responses, 2.3). "According to Mendeleyev the properties of the elements, as well as those of their compounds are periodic functions of their atomic weights…In 1869, he stated that 'the elements arranged according to the magnitude of atomic weights show a periodic change of properties'… In order to make the table work [Mendeleyev left] gaps [predicting] that further elements would eventually be discovered to fit these predictions provided the strongest endorsement of the periodic law" (DSB, 475-76). "Within 15 years, three elements predicted by Mendeleev were discovered, named after their countries of discovery, and found to precisely match predicted properties" (Thyssen). CONDITION & DETAILS: Berlin: Ferd. Dümmler's. 8vo. [xxix], 788, [6]. Stamps on title only. Handsomely rebound in period over marbled boards; four gilt-ruled bands at the spine (which is also gilt-lettered). Solid, tight and bright and clean throughout. Near fine.

Catalogue of Nebulæ and Clusters of Stars, Received October 16, 1863" (Herschel, pp. 1-137) WITH "On the Spectra of Some of the Chemical Elements, Received November 5, 1863" (Huggins, pp. 139-160), "On the Spectra of Some of the Fixed Stars, Received April 28, 1864" (Huggins, pp. 413-436), and "On the Spectra of Some of the Nebulae, Received September 8, 1864" (Huggins, pp. 437-445); WITH "On the Absorption and Radiation of Heat by Gaseous and Liquid Matter, Received June 18, 1863" (Tyndall, pp. 201-225); WITH "On the Differential Equations which Determine the Form of the Roots of Algebraic Equations, Received April 1864" (Boole, pp. 733-755) in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. For the Year MDCCCLXIV [1864], London: Printed by Taylor and Francis, Volume 154, 1865

FIRST EDITION, FULL VOLUME 154 OF THE PHILOSOPHICAL TRANSACTIONS, INCLUSIVE OF SIX IMPORTANT PAPERS, HERSCHEL'S EXTRAORDINARY CATALOG OF NEBULÆ & STARS; THREE ASTRONOMY PAPERS BY WILLIAM HUGGINS, TYNDALL'S FOURTH PAPER ON GLOBAL WARMING & GEORGE BOOLE'S FINAL PAPER. First edition of SIR JOHN HERSCHEL'S enormous catalog, a complete and descriptive compilation of the 5,079 nebulæ and clusters known to date, the majority of which had been discovered by either his father, Sir William Herschel, or himself. An extraordinary achievement, it remains celebrated to this day. First edition of three important papers in the history of astronomy, all by WILLIAM HUGGINS, the founder of stellar astrophysics. Employing only items he had set up in his own observatory -- chemicals and batteries and cameras -- Huggins, first visually and then photographically, explored the spectra of stars, nebulae, and comets. In the first paper here, "On the Spectra of some of the Chemical Elements", Huggins proved stars to be composed of known elements occurring on the Earth and Sun - something we no take as a given. In the second and third papers present in this volume, Huggins was the first to show that some nebulae, including the great nebula in Orion, have pure emission spectra and thus must be truly gaseous, while others, such as that in Andromeda, yield spectra characteristic of stars - a groundbreaking discovery the Dictionary of Scientific Biography deemed "sensational" (DSB, 541). First edition of a paper by JOHN TYNDALL, his fourth in a series of papers (or 'memoirs') written as he investigated the absorption of radiant energy by gases and, by the way, proved that global warming exists. In these papers he demonstrates the first quantification and demonstration that atmospheric gases are infrared emitters, in other words, that they emit heat. The 'memoir' offered here, "On the Absorption and Radiation of Heat by Gaseous and Liquid Matter," proves "that gaseous films not more than one hundredth part of an inch in thickness exhibited a measureable absorption, examing the sifting powers of gases and radiant heat, and extending his researches on dynamic radiation" (Vincent, The Year-book of Facts in Science and Art, 5). Tyndall received the 1869 Rumford metal in recognition of the importance of his work on radiant heat (Milestones in Science 191). What he discovered is considered "the first accurate account of how the atmosphere functions" (Kolbert, Field Notes from a Catastrophe: Man, Nature, and Climate Change, 35). Prior to Tyndall, many believed that something like what we now call the Greenhouse Effect existed, but in this paper Tyndall was the first to demonstrate, quantify, and thus prove it. First edition of GEORGE BOOLE'S final paper, this on differential equations and employing Cayley's method with the equation solved by a definite integral. Boole died later in 1864. CONDITION & DETAILS: In: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. For the Year MDCCCLXIV [1864], London: Printed by Taylor and Francis, Volume 154, 1865. Quarto (11.5 x 9.25; 288 x 232mm). [4], iv, [5], 5, [24], 760 pages, [25], 2. In-text illustrations throughout as well as 25 plates, many large fold out. Genuinely tiny Athenæum Liverpool stamp (small enough that one has to look to find it) on title page, verso, some plates and text; scans upon request. volume, complete. Handsomely rebound in aged calf. 5 raised bands at the spine, each gilt-ruled; gilt-tooled fleur de lis at the spine. Red and black, gilt-lettered morocco spine labels. Tightly and solidly bound.         INGRES]. La Semaine. Dessins faits à Rome par J. Ingres en 1813. Donnés à E. Gatteaux. Gravés par W. Haussoulier en 1869.

Paris, Imprimerie A. Salmon, 1869. - album in-4, 8 planches. Fisk University Co-Founder John Ogden Asks Merriam Publishers if the Gift of a Pictorial Dictionary Was Meant for Him or the University

Nashville, Tenn. 1869 - Autograph Letter Signed, to George and Charles Merriam. Nashville, Tenn., Oct. 18, 1869. 1 p., 8 1/2 x 5 1/4 in. On Fisk University letterhead. In this brief note, Ogden thanks the famous Springfield, Massachusetts dictionary publishers the Merriams for a gift of a copy of their Pictorial Dictionary. Ogden references one "Mr. Gamble" as having stated that the volume was intended as a personal gift, but notes that the dictionary has "the name of our institution inscribed upon, or rather in it, from which I infer you intended it for the institution." He then asks the Merriams to "decide the quarrel." Historical BackgroundJohn Ogden, co-founder and first President of Fisk University, was a noted abolitionist and a pioneer in African-American education. The university was founded by Ogden and the Reverends Erastus Milo Cravath, and Edward Parmelee Smith, all members of the northern American Missionary Association. Established as the Fisk Free Colored School, the institution opened its doors in 1866, barely six months after the end of the Civil War. It was one of the first colleges for freedmen to operate in the former Confederacy, and is the oldest higher education institution of any kind in Nashville, Tennessee.Ogden's letter is accompanied by a printed circular describing the available courses of instruction and prices for tuition and boarding. Dated in print "Nashville, Tenn., September 9, 1869." The circular notes that "Classes in Vocal Music, Penmanship and Gymnastics will be organized each term and taught free of charge." The famous Jubilee Singers were organized at Fisk two years later, in 1871.ConditionOld folds as expected, small spot of darkening, else Fine; circular with two faint fold-lines, still fresh and bright.

        RANGAKU KOTO HAJIME

1869. Very Good. [MEDICINE] SUGITA Gempaku. RANGAKU KOTO HAJIME. To^kyo^, Tenshinro, Meiji 2 [1869]. 22.5 x 15.1 cm. 2 vols., srting-bound, Japanese-style, fukuro- toji. Original covers and printed paper title labels. This memoir, by the scientist behind the ground-breaking KAITAI SHINSHO, was originally completed in Gempaku's old age, in 1815. It was transmitted via manuscript until the fall of the ancien regime, when Fukuzawa Yukichi and Gempaku's grandson arranged to have it published in a woodblock edition. The book was written in a very clear and simple style and reveals the great lengths of ingenuity the KAITAI SHINSHO author/translators went to to uncover the secrets and understand the esoteric Dutch vocabulary of Kulmas' anatomy that they translated therein. The RANGAKU KOTOHAJIME is often cited as perhaps the earliest Japanese text to explain techniques of cryptoanalysis from a practical and logically rigorous point of view. It is also a compelling story of scientific investigation in isolated traditional Japan. Finally, despite its relatively late publication date, the RANGAKU KOTOHAJIME is vanishingly rare. Our copy is in very good condition, enclosed in a custom-fitted clasped chitsu case.

        Appleton’s Journal Magazine Bound 1869-70

Appleton's Publishing Co. 1869 - This is a four-volume run of Appleton’s Journal, from Vol. 1, No. 1 (April 3, 1869) to Vol. 4, No. 92 (December 31, 1870), bound in contemporary half leather and marbled boards. Quartos. Bindings scuffed and bumped at tips, handsome, VG+; contents near fine, with a few marginal tears to foldouts. Some of the foldouts poorly folded in. Ghosting to the June 19, 1869, Homer cover. Appleton’s Journal ran for seven years as a weekly, but only the first two years of the magazine are heavily illustrated. These volumes contain twenty-five “cartoons,” the curious label Appleton’s applied to stand-alone illustrations that accompanied select issues. The most impressive of these are beautiful cityscapes and landscapes (“The Grand Drive at Central Park,” “Fairmount Park, Philadelphia,” “The Levee at New Orleans,” etc.), measuring up to 11″ high by 28″ long. Also featured are fourteen steel engravings of American locales, which inspired the famous two-volume work, Picturesque America, later in the decade. Winslow Homer contributed ten illustrations to these volumes (Beam #152-159, 176, 177), of which five are covers, one a tipped-in doublespread (“The Fishing Party”), and one a large fold-out (“On the Beach at Long Branch” [9.5″ X 13″]). The volumes also contain illustrated supplements devoted to specific subjects, such as “Underground Life; or Coal-Mines and Miners” and “New York Illustrated,” a profusely illustrated 16-page tour of the city. The first volume contains the first American excerpt of Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth and the third and fourth volumes contain monthly installments of Charles Dickens’ Mystery of Edwin Drood. Mott says, “Few periodicals of the years following the Civil War furnished a better picture of the varied life of the times than the weekly Appleton’s Journal did from 1869 to 1876.” (Mott III/417). This is a nice set. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Glasgow Maurice Ogle, 1869, hardcover. TWO VOLUMES. -- Ownership on title page of The Bruce: "Marguerite de Angeli written 12th of June 1982" (in a shaky hand) and with de Angeli's bookplate in both volumes. There is pencilled marginalia, which appears to be in same hand; de Angeli did produce a couple of books with Scotland and medieval themes. -- Each in the original language (The Brus in Scots from the manuscript of 1489, and of 1488 manuscript for Wallace). -- Each volume with notes by John Jamieson, and also memoir of John Barbour. -- Each is hardcover, 3/4 red leather, spines nicely gilt decorated and with raised bands, plus marbled edges. Condition: very good plus (covers have small rub spots, few small stains, and bubbles under the board covers; a few pages are foxed). -- A lovely presentation of this SCARCE duo of Scottish medieval literature, as published 1869 (original was 1820) and UNIQUE for the de Angeli collector.

Rectal Surgery - A practical Guide to the Modern Surgical Treatment of Rectal Diseases. With 2 Colour Plates and 105 illustrations in the Text.

Second Edition. 8. VII, 359 pages. Original Hardcover with the very scarce original dustjacket (unclipped). Excellent condition of the Volume itself. The dustjacket with some staining. With the very important preface to the second edition in which Miles gives his opinion on the longevity of some of his own medical findings and his regret towards the tendency of his colleagues "to revert to less radical measures in the surgical treatment of the rectum". Extremely rare, rather scarce and very sought after publication ! William Ernest Miles (15 January 1869 - 24 September 1947) was an English surgeon known for the Miles' operation: an abdomino-perineal excision for rectal cancer. Sources differ as to whether Miles was born in Trinidad or in Uppingham, England. He received his medical education at St Bartholomew's Hospital, from where he graduated in 1891. At age 25, he became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Formerly, surgery for rectal cancer was by perineal excision, which was less efficient in removing neoplastic tissue but easier to perform and carried less risks for the patient. Miles studied the reasons for recurrence following perineal resection and showed that many cases involved the upwards spread of cancer. His approach was to combine surgery via the perineum with surgery from above the cancer via the abdomen, known as abdomino-perineal resection. Miles perfected this technique over a number of years from 1907,eventually achieving long term remissions and gaining the acceptance of other surgeons. Miles' operation became the gold standard for surgical treatment of rectal cancer. (Wikipedia)
