Grimms' Goblins - circa 1868 edition published by George Vickers. The penny dreadful edition of Vickers' series of Fairy Books for Boys and Girls, bound from the 25 weekly parts and featuring 22 full page colour illustrations by "Phiz" (Hablot K. Browne), without the black and white illustrations which featured in the earlier edition and with fewer tales. Printed by Robson and Son. 398 pages, containing 98 tales, not all from the Brothers Grimm. The book is bound in the publisher's blue cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt and blind, the spine has been re-backed at some point onto similarly toned blue cloth, the boards are somewhat bumped, rubbed and faded, more so to the spine, with minor tears to the cloth. The text block has gilt to all edges, it retains the original and rather striking colour title page, with the publishing information cropped at the bottom to fit the format, the pages are slightly toned, there is minor foxing and slight cracking and the endpapers were probably replaced when the spine was re-backed, though the paper used looks to be Victorian and they may be the originals. Arguably even more uncommon than the 1861 original due to the even cheaper production processes used.

Bauer, August (1828 - Weil am Rhein - 1913)
Mi, 1855. Andersen, Hans Christian.
Copenhagen, C. A. Reitzel, 1868. 8vo. 60 pp. Bound with both original wrappers in later half cloth. First edition. - Provenance: descendants of the Henriques family, in whose home Andersen had been a frequent visitor during the last fifteen years of his life. The house was full of life and happy days as a large circle of both Danish and foreign musicians and artists visited the salons and parties held there. The friendship with the family was established in August Bournonville's home, where the poet first heard the young, talented Therese Henriques (1833-83) playing the piano. Immediately, a warm friendship between the two was kindled, and it would last a lifetime. - A tear to the front wrapper repaired, otherwise fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Blake, William.
1868. London: John Camden Hotten, 1868. 4to, 27 hand-coloured plates over lithographs, printed on paper replicating Blake's original supply. Rebound in full red morocco with gilt decoration and black leather gilt label to spine, in fitted red morocco slipcase. Very good with occasional pages spotted as usual in this edition but the coloring in reasonably good condition. § The first facsimile of a Blake book (excepting only a few selections in monochrome in Gilchrist's first edition of the Life). Limited to 150 copies, this facsimile is rarely found in acceptable condition as the watercolor usually turns almost black and the paper tends to fox badly. In this copy the foxing is almost completely absent from the images though quite noticeable in the margins and at the front and back. The facsimile is from copy F, now at the Pierpont Morgan Library. The limitation is derived from Hotten's ledger sheets as cited by Paley (Hotten, Swinburne, and the Blake Facsimiles of 1868... NYPL, 1976.). Bentley, BB, 99. Keynes 210.

There is grandeur in this view of life .... from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved. Here we offer a very early edition of Charles Darwin's classic, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, (complete with tri-fold-out exhibit) published by D. Appleton and Co., New York, in 1868. This is the very rare fourth edition, published before the phrase "survival of the fittest" was added to the text and before the "On" was removed from the title. Book has been reblocked and rebound with matching acid-free patches over hinges at end-paper gutters, remnants of original spine cloth reapplied atop new brown spine cloth, and a new placeholding ribbon. Period inscription over the top of the title page. Very tight and square binding. Pulp is overall a bit stiff but quite durable with very bright and crisp text. Fold-out is in great shape. Measures approximately 5.5 x 8-inches; 440 indexed pages, plus 2 pages of ads. This very rare relic of scientific history will make a beautiful centerpiece to any rare books collection, a canny investment, or a very thoughtful and special gift. ** Have you seen all the amazing first and rare editions of iconic books we offer? Work Didot invented the word "stereotype", which in printing refers to the metal printing plate created for the actual printing of pages (as opposed to printing pages directly with movable type), and used the process extensively, revolutionizing the book trade by his cheap editions. His manufactory was a place of pilgrimage for the printers of the world. He first used the process in his edition of Callet's Tables of Logarithms (1795), in which he secured an accuracy till then unattainable. Daegener, William--Wells Fargo Agent, Columbia, Ca
1868. Columbia, CA: Wells Fargo Express. Fair. Ledger Book. Ledger Book measuring 14" x 8 1/4". Marbled boards with mostly expired leather spine. Interior sewn binding remains tight. Pastedown label on front partially torn. Fore edge of front board missing 1" to 2"; similar to back board. Blank endpapers are chipped but interior manuscript pages complete. Dampstaining to fore edge but all writing is legible. Classy manuscript title page in a flourishing hand , "Way Bills Sent from Columbia Office of Wells Fargo & Co." Maybe not the prettiest exterior but who cares with such fantastic content. Original Wells Fargo Express Waybill ledger book kept by Columbia, CA Wells Fargo agent William Daegener, spanning June 1,1868 to July 27, 1870. William Daegener built the third Wells Fargo office in Columbia, CA a fire-resistant two-story brick building with fireproof iron shutters in 1858. The building remains today, part of Columbia State Historic Park. Not only did Wells Fargo handle freight, but their agents also bought gold dust under their own names as their own private business. Buyers had to know gold and its value the moment they saw it and several Wells Fargo agents learned assaying. William Daegener, was quoted “I shall be sure to pay the highest price and have profit left. ” This ledger of waybills provides a wonderful view of freight leaving Columbia, CA via Wells Fargo, as the height of the gold rush was winding down. We find numerous listings for gold bars and dust, plus the more mundane, but vital, packages, letters, COD checks, and coinage. It cos … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Arguably even more uncommon than the 1861 original due to the even cheaper production processes used.

Webster, Daniel
Washington DC: Gideon. First edition, presentation copy to W. E. Robinson from his friend Dan'l Webster. Wraps bound into recent half morocco gilt, with additional signature of Webster appended to front wrap, and with additional note from 1868 on Connecticut Courant letterhead from Robinson to a Mr. Sanborn asking him to send his semi-weekly columns to his Walden address rather than a former one. He also makes mention of Sanborn's latest article and how it will be interesting to a number of readers. This same copy, minus the additional material, was sold at Sotheby's in 1985 for a total of $522 including buyer's commission. The Rhode Island Question centered on Dorr's Rebellion of 1841-42, which was a populist rebellion to change antiquated electoral laws in Rhode Island that dated back to 1663 requiring voters to own land, which in addition to later laws requiring voters to be white and have at least $134 to their name, made for widespread disenfranchisement. Very Good.

The novelist and critic Mrs. Oliphant was horrified by Broughton's "uncleanly suggestions". Her novels were soon banned from circulating libraries. James De Mille was a Canadian author whose works were serialized in magazines before being published in book form.(see Watters, Canadian Literature, p. 273) Trollope's Harry Heathcote was inspired when he traveled to Australia to visit his son during Christmas one year in the Bush of Australia. SAMUELS, Edward A.
Nichols and Noyes, Boston, 1868. (10 1/8 x 7 1/4 inches). 24 chromolithographed plates by John H. Buffords, 4 hand-coloured line engravings. Contemporary half brown morocco and brown cloth covered boards, spine with raised bands in six compartments, lettered in the second and fourth, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers A deluxe large paper, fully coloured issue. "In presenting this volume to the public, I would say that my chief aim in its preparation has been to supply the great demand for some work that might be accessible to all . The want of such a volume is keenly appreciated by our students in this interesting branch of natural history; and, as all the editions of the valuable and popular works of Wilson and Nuttall are out of print, it has long been almost entirely unsupplied" (Preface). Samuels's work was issued in a variety of formats: with the 24 lithographed plates in black and white and the 4 plates of eggs coloured, with all the plates coloured (i.e. 24 chromolithographed plate and 4 hand coloured), and a large paper issue with all the plates coloured (like the present). MARSTON, John B.
Lucas Co. Ohio, 1868. MARSTON, John B. City of Toledo Lucas Co. Ohio, 1868. Fine folding lithographed map (68 x 53 4/8 inches), laid down on linen in 25 sections. The title upper left, and a lithograph of Brown's Hotel laid down lower right. Tipped-in to original maroon cloth wallet (front cover detached). Provenance: from the important cartographical library of Warren Heckrotte, his sale, Rare Cartography, Exploration and Voyages, part III, March 10th, 2016, lot 203 An attractive, detailed and large scale, map of Toledo, Ohio. Warren Heckrotte comments that "Lots are shown and numbered. Areas of Visalia and Port Lawrence, the original two towns from which Toledo was formed are named. The Atlas of Ohio, 1872, has a reduced size version of Marston's map of Toledo, which shows some additions." By the time this map was published the Erie Canal, which had opened in 1845, brought significant business to Toledo, turning it into a growing seaport along Lake Erie. When railroads began to emerge as a key form of transportation in Ohio in the second half of the nineteenth century, "Toledo became a destination for a number of railroad lines. In addition, a number of industries began to emerge in the city, including furniture companies, carriage makers, breweries, railroad manufacturing companies, and glass companies, among others. The Libbey Glass Works was located in Toledo and helped to make the community known as the "City of Glass." By 1880, Toledo boasted a population of more than fifty thousand people, making it one of the largest cities in the state. Many immigrants began t … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]
