        Victor of the Glen.

London: L. Brall, 1868. - Single sheet, (27 x 42 inches). Fine engraving showing stags (small indentation on lower margin). ?First edition. Sir Edwin Landseer rose to fame in the 1840s and 1850s, largely due to the publication of prints based on his paintings of deer. This particular scene shows a confrontation between two stags in the Scottish Highlands, the victor braying to the sky, and the other yielding on the ground, as three does look on from afar. "Landseer had close links with the sphere of zoological art through his friendship with [Joseph] Wolf and through the activities of his own brothers, Charles and Thomas Landseer, both of whom were occasionally employed as illustrators of popular books on natural history. However, his paintings had a scale, dramatic power and imaginative exaltation that set them apart from such works. They were history paintings, but of a completely original kind, in the sense that they invested the lives of animals themselves with tragic grandeur. That this could be done so convincingly is itself evidence of great changes in attitudes to nature in the nineteenth century: the profound philosophical implications of the discoveries in geology, paleontology and evolutionary theory which I have outlined placed animals at the forefront of consciousness. As a writer in the London Quarterly Review put it in 1874, Landseer painted 'the poetry of animal life, running so curiously parallel to the poetry of human life' (Diana Donald, Picturing Animals in Britain, 1750-1850, p. 94). For more information about this engraving, or a warm welcome to see it and other works on paper and books in our library at 72nd Street, NYC, please contact Megan Scauri, M.A., M.L.S., in the Rare Book Department.         Nine Years on the North-West Frontier of India,

London: Richard Bentley,, 1868. from 1854 to 1863. Octavo. Original purple sand-grained cloth, title gilt to spine, blind panelling to the boards, endpapers renewed with brown surface-paper. Armorial bookplate of David Carnegie of Stronvar. Binding skilfully refurbished, spine darkened, a few marks to covers. A very good copy. First edition. Cotton (1792-1874) arrived in India as a cornet without purchase in the 22nd Light Dragoons, becoming lieutenant in 1812. On the disbandment of the regiment he was placed on half-pay but continued to serve in India as a-d-c to Major-General Hare at Bangalore. In 1822 he purchased a company in the Buffs and served as a-d-c to Lord Combermere, Commander-in-Chief in India. Subsequently he was appointed major in the 41st in Burma, later transferring to the 28th in New South Wales. He returned to Bombay with his regiment in time to hear of the disasters in the Khyber Pass, but they were unable to take the field due to an outbreak of cholera. When the 28th was ordered home in 1848 Cotton effected an exchange with Colonel Pennefeather of the 22nd in order to remain in India. In 1853 he commanded a combined force raised in the aftermath of the murder of Colonel Mackesay at Peshawar, proceeding to the Kohat Pass and successfully suppressing the rising. In the same year he commanded the 22nd in a force under Boileau against the Boree Afridis and in 1854 commanded a force of 4,500 against the Mohmands. Exchanging again in 1854, this time to the 10th, he was commanding as brigadier in the Peshawar Valley at the time of the outbreak of the Mutiny. Presented with the opportunity to demonstrate his abilities at a higher level of command he rose to the occasion, forcefully disarming the native infantry, securing the passage of the Indus, and blowing several traitorous sepoys from cannons. Lord Lawrence described him as "the right man for the place." After the worst of the disturbances were over Cotton lead the expedition against the fanatical colony at Sittana. He became major-general in 1858, colonel of the 10th in 1863, lieutenant-general in 1866, and succeeded Sir John Pennefeather as governor of Chelsea Hospital in 1872 two years before his death. DNB describes him as an officer "whose knowledge of India was exceptionally great, and who possessed in a remarkable degree the confidence of his soldiers", commending the present work for its insight and Cotton for his efforts in pointing out abuses and "in every possible way [working] to ameliorate the condition of the British soldier in India." Riddick, however, remarks that "Cotton was cynical, cantankerous, and narrow in vision. His memoirs crustily crab at civilian officials who failed to give the army total military and political control of the frontier and denied the wisdom of his thinking." before conceding that Nine Years reflects the "courage and defiance required during the Indian Mutiny" and reveals "tactical and military thought of brilliance which later proved valid."

Unpublished account of a trip from Rangoon to Yunnan in 1868

Rangoon, 1868. 32 leaves rectos only. 4to. Extremities chipped, some old tape. Very good. 32 leaves rectos only. 4to. Addressed to the Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, this despatch precedes Bowers' official 200 page report on the Sladen expedition to Yunnan. Bowers was an obvious choice to accompany the mission. A long term resident of Rangoon, he was a respected member of the Royal Naval Reserve and an independent merchant with extensive commercial connections in the region. The expedition's official purpose was to establish "overland communication with Western China", namely to revive the Ambassador Route between Bhamo and Yunnan and secure British trade in China via their representatives in Burma. Trade in the region had almost ceased largely due to the Panthay rebellion (1856-73). Its importance to England was evident from the size of the expedition, the party numbered over a hundred including servants and armed escorts. They were further accompanied by elephants laden with British made gifts for local rulers and potential allies. Departing Mandalay on 13 January, the party proceded to Bhamo, Moulmein and then Yunnan. They returned in September the same year. In addition to its commercial agenda, "the journey proved for the first time the navigability of the [Irrawaddy] river beyond Mandalay, and charts were drawn up by Captain Bowers who accompanied the expedition" (Howgego). This does Bowers a disservice as his chart of the river was 50 foot long. Although the focus remains on trade in the region, additional details are included: "The capital 'Talifoo' [Talifu]... a city of the first class, it is situated on the banks of an immense lake or island sea and is the seat of the Panthey govt; Their king 'Suliman' has his court there..." And regarding Yunchen, it "is the city of next importance... gold, silver, lead, silk & salt are produced in large quantities... Three days march north of Momein is a large flourishing town called Kito; in its immediate neighbourhood are orpiment, iron & copper mines. The manufacture of salt is carried on here, this being a govt monopoly, it is sold by license; Opium, tea... oil... twine for making nets... iron cooking pots are made here... a thriving place." Bowers is obviously impressed and overwhelmed by the scale of the Pantheys: "that a nation consisting of 50 millions of Mohamedan Chinese called Pantheys were in existence entirely separated from the Chinese Empire, occupying a vast territory filled with first-class cities and towns, in a high state of civilization, & having a king & govt. of their own. From daily intercourse with these Pantheys for six weeks, the impression left was that they were more of a warlike than a commercial people..." Furthermore, the report includes some brief character sketches of the people they met. "The governor of the city of Momein... a man of most liberal ideas, and generous impulses, was anxious to reciprocate trade relations with us and entered heartily into a treaty of commerce with Major Sladen, establishing a tariff rate ... granting a permit to go to any part of their territory by paying this duty ... encouraging trade between the two nations." Turning to the matter at hand, he assesses some of the reasons for the interrruption in trade: "The silk trade is Yunnan is in a measure temporarily suspended... immense quantities cultivated, formerly in Yunnan and sent down the Yangtse Kiang has almost ceased and this trade has dwindled down, to the most insignificant proportion thus increasing scarcity... not from the disease of the silk work as many suppose, but from the deficiency of transit alone..." He pursues the matter further here: "The trade with western China is very small. At present, in fact, it is nearly suspended. The former Mandarins Imperial officers having been driven out by the Panthays... The opposition is sufficient to deter the small traders, whose wealth consists principally in their mules... the insidious nature of the opposition from the Burmese govt pervades everywhere, and every branch of this corrupt executive is brought to bear in an underhanded manner against our getting into China." And finally concludes, "It is therefore necessary that we should have the Burmese govt heartily with us in this good work... our govt convincing them of the advantages... These men our are past friends... 40 chiefs with their followers came spontaneously to Bhamo and tendered their allegiance to Major Sladen..." Sladen's narrative of the expedition was published as the Official Narrative of the Expedition to China via Bhamo. Bowers own report was published in Rangoon by the American Mission Press under the title, Bhamo Expedition: report on the practicability of re-opening the trade route between Burma and western China (1869). Skillfully rebacked, with remainder of original spine laid down, Binder's ticket "E. Bosqui Book-Binding 517 Clay Street (San Fransisco)". Written in ink on rectos (mostly) of ruled paper, 7 leaves of preliminaries, pp. 1-201 (Part 1); 1-205 (part 2). With numerous corrections and deletions. 1 vols. 4to (7-3/4 x 9-7/8 inches). Historical Novel on Robert Fulton. Hauch's work, ROBERT FULTON: EN FORTÆLLING was first published in Copenhagen in 1853; Sinding's English translation was published in New York, by Macdonald & Palmer, in 1868. In his translator's Preface, Sinding (1812-1887) introduces the author to the American reader: "The name of the Danish poet and novelist Hans Christian Andersen, has long been a household word in England and the United States. The refined affection of his characters, the delicacy of his speech, and the grace of his style, have endeared him to all intelligent and tasteful people both in the old and new world. The author of this present work, J.C. Hauch, is his intimate friend, but none of his numerous works have yet, so far as I know, found their way to this country, while on account of the brilliancy of his talents, the profoundness of his learning, and the descriptive power of his gigantic mind, he has won for himself an illustrious name on the continent as a poet and writer. I, therefore, willingly complied with the request made to me both by the author himself, and by several other literary men from Copenhagen, my native place, to dress in an English garment this American subject...".

        Signed portrait lithograph

Boston: , 1868. Black and white lithograph mounted on buff card. Mount size: 29.9 x 24.8 cm. Sheet size: 16.8 x 11. 6 cm. A pale water stain to the left-hand margin of lithograph, mount with slightly worn and chipped edges, and a couple of short closed tears. In very good condition. Presented in a dark brown wooden frame and UV glass. Appealing lithograph portrait of Charles Dickens in profile, inscribed by Dickens in blue ink on the mount: "Charles Dickens, Boston, 26 February 1868". Dickens's second reading tour of America, which lasted from December 1867 to April 1868 and left him physically exhausted, was nonetheless a success both artistically and commercially. 26 February found the author between readings at the Tremont Temple, Boston, where he presumably inscribed this portrait.

Berlin, Georg Reimer, 1868.. First Edition. 8°. XVI, 568 Seiten sowie VIII Tafeln im Anhang. Originaler Pappband mit Rückenschild. Nur minimal berieben. Erste Ausgabe. Mit handschriftlicher Widmung Haeckel's: "Seinem verehrten Collegen, Herrn Professor Ernst Schmid z. fr. Er. Der Verfasser." Octavo, 568 (plus plates). First edition of this essential early work by the great German theoretical biologist whose early understanding of the Darwinian revolution was instrumental in bringing the concept of evolution to the attention of Europe and the world. A very good or better copy in contemporary marbled paper-covered boards, with the front wrap bound in. A presentation copy, inscribed by Haeckel on the titlepage..

Inaugural Ceremonies in honour of the opening of Fountain Gardens Pais

1868. NIVEN, James Craig. Inaugural Ceremonies in honour of the opening of Fountain Gardens Paisley.iv, 86 pp, (including list of subscribers), engraved portrait frontis and 6 full page engraved plates; Large 4to., 312 x 280 mm, bound in original green cloth covered bevelled boards, the title blocked in gilt within a floriate cartouche to the centre of the upper board, the design repeated in blind to the centre of the lower board, both boards with a decorative border blocked in blind, all edges gilt. Paisley: J. & J. Cook, 1868.The Fountain Gardens stand on the site of Hope Temple Gardens developed by John Love, a local manufacturer in 1797. At his death in 1827 the land passed into the care of his trustees, and it was from them that John Coats of J & P Coats of Paisley, thread manufacturers, purchased the site in 1866. He commissioned the Glasgow Landscape architect, James Craig Niven, a former assistant of Joseph Paxton, to lay out a new park to be gifted to Paisley for the use of the townsfolk. The design was broadly geometric in plan with wide avenues leading to an ornate fountain at their centre. A particular feature of the gardens was the elaborate cast ironwork supplied by the firm of George Smith & Company of the Sun Foundry in Glasgow, which included lamps, railings, gates and a new verandah. On the 26th May, 1868, the park was formally handed over to the care of Paisley Town Council. The present work is a detailed record of the design of the gardens and the ceremonies and festivities that attended their inauguration.Although well-represented in institutional collections, this title rarely appears for sale. Some offsetting from the plates, otherwise a bright, fresh copy.Provenance: Old ink presentation inscription to the recto of the half-title, 'Presented By The Philosphical Society of Paisley To The Public Library at Maidstone. Hugh Cowan President Paisley 20 Oct. 1873'; neat rubber ink stamp 'Withdrawn from Maidstone Museum Library', to same. The Drawing Room Edition, one of 600 copies.
