After working in Pavia, he was appointed professor of general pathology in Turin. Like Neumann, he also studied with Virchow in Berlin. At age 22 in 1868, he published two articles confirming that nucleated red blood cells in the marrow evolved into nonnucleated red cells and extended these observations to include the formation of white blood cells (1,2). Bizzozero also concluded that the marrow was the site not only of blood formation but also of blood destruction, based on the erroneous assumption that large cells containing pigment granules were scavenger cells containing red cell debris."         Portrait of Charles Darwin, signed by Darwin and by Cameron

Julia Margaret Cameron, 1868 - THE ICONIC PORTRAIT OF CHARLES DARWIN, boldly signed by Charles Darwin and by Julia Margaret Cameron. Albumen print on paper (2¼ x 3½ in.), carte-de-visite mount with gold lithograph gold border. Inscribed by Cameron “From life Copyright Julia Margaret Cameron.” Very good condition. Julia Margaret Cameron’s portrait of Darwin is the most famous photograph of a 19th-century scientist. Darwin remarked, “I like this photograph very much better than any other which has been taken of me.” In 1868, Darwin and his family traveled to the Isle of Wight, both for a long holiday and to aid in his recuperation from a recent illness. The Darwins rented a house from Cameron and were immediately charmed by the photographer: “She received the whole family with open-hearted kindness and hospitality, and Darwin always retained a warm feeling of friendship for her. When they left she came to see them off, loading them with presents of photographs. Moved, Darwin said: ‘Mrs. Cameron, there are sixteen people in this house, all in love with you.’ Darwin paid her for her portraits of him, and as the Camerons had by that time lost a great deal of money through the continued failure of the coffee crop, she gladly accepted payment and ran boasting to her husband, ‘Look, Charles, what a lot of money!’” (Gernsheim, Julia Margaret Cameron).         The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication

London: John Murray 1868 - Two volumes. Original green cloth. Light wear. A near fine set. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, one of 1500 copies. “The two issues have considerable textual differences” (Freeman). “Survival of the fittest” appears here for the first time in any of Darwin’s works. Darwin planned to prepare a massive work fleshing out the theories outlined in On the Origin of Species. The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication, the only section of this ‘big book” to have been published, “corresponds to the first two intended chapters” (Freeman). This work “contained his hypothesis of pangenesis, by means of which Darwin tried to frame an explanation of hereditary resemblance, inheritance of acquired characteristics, atavism, and regeneration. It was a brave attempt to account for a number of phenomena which were beyond the bounds of scientific knowledge in his day, such as fertilization by the union of sperm and egg, the mechanism of chromosomal inheritance, and the development of the embryo by successive cell division” (DSB).         The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication.

London: John Murray,, 1868. In two volumes. With illustrations. 2 volumes, demy octavo. Original green cloth, blind-panelled covers, spines gilt with imprint at foot in one line, dark green coated endpapers, Edmonds & Remnants label at end of vol. I. 43 woodcuts in the text. 32 pages of publisher's advertisements dated April 1867 to rear of vol. I; 1 page dated February 1868 to vol. II. Bookplates of James McBryde, St Helens. Cloth lightly marked and cockled in places, superficial cracks to inner hinges, light spotting to edges and outer blanks, occasionally elsewhere, overall a very good copy. First edition, first issue. With a slip of paper with the inscription "From the Author" in Darwin's hand pasted to the front free endpaper. Presentation inscriptions in Darwin's hand are notoriously rare; the usual procedure was for the inscription to be in the hand of one of Murray's clerks. The bookplate is that of James McBryde, a Scottish chemist from near Stranraer, who co-founded an alkali firm in St Helens, Lancashire. He owned a number of books by Charles Darwin and associated evolutionary material. His son, also James McBryde, went up to King's College Cambridge in 1893 to read Natural Sciences. He became friends with M. R. James and completed four illustrations for James's Ghost Stories of an Antiquary, but died of complications following an appendix operation before he could complete them. With 5- and 7-line errata in vols. I and II respectively, issued in two volumes demy octavo, the only Murray Darwin to appear in this larger format. "This represents the only section of Darwin's big book on the origin of species which was printed in his lifetime and corresponds to its first two intended chapters" (Freeman). "Its two volumes were intended to provide overwhelming evidence for the ubiquity of variation, although they would also incidentally answer Lyell and Gray, who maintained that variations had not occurred purely by chance but were providentially directed. Darwin showed that breeders indeed selected from a vast array of minute random variations. He gave numerous instances of the causes of variability, including the direct effect of the conditions of life, reversion, the effects of use and disuse, saltation, prepotency, and correlated growth. The Variation also addressed a key criticism of the Origin of Species: that it lacked an adequate understanding of inheritance" (ODNB). The term "survival of the fittest" (borrowed at Wallace's insistence from Herbert Spencer's 1866 Principles of Biology) first appeared in the Variation (v. 2, p. 89), preceding its first use in the fifth edition of the Origin of Species (1869). The Variation was a full statement of the facts on which the theories of the Origin were based, though leaving aside an account of human evolution for The Descent of Man (1871).

Turkestanskii krai v 1866 [Travel Notes, Turkestan 1866]

St. Petersburg: Tiblen,, 1868. Quarto (310 × 224 mm). Recent dark brown half morocco, marbled boards, red morocco label, raised bands, single rules in blind to the spine and corner edges. 20 tinted lithographic plates, 5 of them two-tint, the remainder single-tint; wood-engraved title-page vignette, and cleverly worked, illustrative wood-engraved historiated initials to each of the seventeen chapters, with vignetted illustrations as tail-pieces to all but the last; double-page three-colour regional map. Half-title and errata leaf bound in. Light toning to the text throughout, a scatter of foxing, plates a little browned, occasional marginal staining, three tissue-guards renewed, but overall a very good copy. First and only edition, decidedly uncommon with OCLC showing only 9 locations worldwide, and just a single copy at auction in the last 50 years. Highly desirable account of Tashkent - capital of Russian Turkestan and now of Uzbekistan - and its surrounding area at the time of the Russian annexation. On the establishment of the new Russian Governor-generalship of Turkestan in 1866, Petr Ivanovich Pashino (1838-1891), was transferred from his posting as junior secretary to the embassy in Teheran, to Tashkent, the administrative centre, as "agent of the Minister of Foreign Affairs". Pashino, is described by Charles Marvin in the monitory chapter dedicated to him in Reconnoitring Central Asia as "Pashino, the Russian Secret Agent", and he does indeed seem to have been some sort of minor operator within the complex machinations of the Great Game. On graduation from St. Petersburg, he was sent to Kazan Imperial University, at the time one of Europe's foremost centres for Oriental Studies, where "he spent several years in philological investigations", and it was his wide-ranging knowledge of Asian languages that led to his being recruited by the Russian government in 1861. He travelled extensively across Asia, often passing himself off as a Muslim, claiming that going incognito had once saved his life in Afghanistan, and it certainly helped to him to obtain a remarkably intimate and detailed portrait of the lives of the peoples of this region, in both the cities and on the steppe, which continues to be drawn upon by historians and ethnographers to this day. The work also offers an excellent visual record, the majority of the plates are of Tashkent, with views of madrassahs and mosques, street scenes, but also the courtyard of the home of Said Azim Muhammed Bai, a wealthy merchant who had been one of Gen. Cherniaev's leading supporters in the Russianization of the city after its conquest, "Seid Azim spoke Russian and moved comfortably within the worlds of both imperial and local business and politics. He had previously gained the favour of tsarist administrators by buying the freedom of Russian slaves in the region. Seid Azim's goals extended beyond gaining lucrative contracts or a leading position within the colonial administration. Letters to tsarist officials attest to his strong commitment to improving local education under Tashkent's new rulers" (Sahadeo, Russian Colonial Society in Tashkent, 1865--1923, pp.20-1). Other localities include Khodzent, now Khujand in Tajikistan, and Turkestan and Chimikent, or Shymkent, both now in the South Kazakhstan Region of Kazakhstan. Two of the plates are from photographs by Mikhail K. Priorov, which are probably among the very first photographic records made in Central Asia. The map is also of particular interest, being the first based on the accurate surveys made of the region following the Russian advance. Pashino's career did seem destined for greatness, when Abdur Rahman, grandson of Dost Mohammed Khan sought refuge in Samarkand in 1869, Pashino, being the only pashto speaker in the region, was appointed his interpreter and garnered some considerable influence thereby, his opinions on the situation in Afghanistan being thought authoritative. However, Pashino did not "possess the qualifications of a diplomat", being instead "rash, headstrong, egotistical and loquacious, which defects rendered him ill-adapted for the intrigues which Kaufmann was always conducting in Central Asia" (Marvin, "Pashino, the Russian Secret Agent", Reconnoitring Central Asia, p.255) . He was recalled to Russia in 1873, just before the invasion of Khiva, and after several further postings was sent to Tiflis, but "the Russian Government, which is ready to make use of any instrument, could do nothing with him. Deprived of the support of the Tifiis authorities, he made his way to St. Petersburg, and tried to earn a few roubles by writing feuilleton articles for the newspapers. Before long he quarrelled with this support, and, throwing it up, was reduced to the condition of the direst necessity. A few months ago, in crossing a street, he was knocked down and run over by a carriage, and is now a cripple in the paupers' ward of one of the St. Petersburg hospitals" (Marvin, p.262). Keenly observed, insider's survey of the early days of Russian Turkestan.

EERSTE AMERIKAANSE OVERZICHT VAN "S WERELDS ZEEVARENDE NATIES."Johnson's new chart of national emblems"'. Prijs: € 650,-.

The Truthful Lens, A survey of the photographically illustrated book 1844-1914 by Goldschmidt and Naef, page 205 number 83, list the edition with 42 photographs. Six of the steel engravings show the Queen and her family in various pursuits. The inscription in Victoria's hand is on a blank endpaper and reads: "For the Rev: R. Duckworth from Victoria, June 20, 1870". The Rev. Robinson Duckworth (1834-1911) was a Fellow of Trinity College, Oxford from 1860 to 1876, where, from 1866 to 1870, he was Instructor and the Governor to Victoria's son Prince Leopold. He was Chaplain-in-Ordinary to Queen Victoria from 1870 to 1901 and there is a round memorial window dedicated to him in Westminster Abbey. At Oxford Reverend Duckworth knew Lewis Carroll and was present on the original boating expedition of 4 July 1862 during which Alice's Adventures were first told by Lewis Carroll to Alice Liddell and friends. Robinson Duckworth wrote his own account of the river-trip in a letter sent to Stuart Collingwood, who was compiling his second volume of biographical and literary pieces, The Lewis Carroll Picture Book. See also The Letters of Lewis Carroll, edited by Morton N. Cohen, Volume 1, page 124-125 and page 63. Laid in the book is a 1940s reprint of a photograph of Robinson Duckworth.         The Game of Base Ball: How to Learn It, How to Play It, and How to Teach It. With Sketches of Noted Players

New York: George Munro & Co.. (1868). First. First edition. 12mo. 180, [13] ads pp., frontispiece. Original quarter brownish-red cloth and purple papercovered boards printed in gold. Paper rubbed on the boards, particularly at the corners, one page a little wrinkled from a printing flaw, but a very nice copy of a particularly fragile construction. Chadwick, a sportswriter, statistician, and historian, is generally considered the "father of baseball" for his popularization and contributions to the development of the game. He edited the first baseball guides, was credited with creating the box score (and the abbreviation "K" for the strikeout), and created the statistics of batting average and earned run average. He was posthumously inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Although this book was preceded by various annual guides Chadwick wrote, this was the first non-fiction book exclusively devoted to baseball to be issued in hardcover (The Base Ball Player's Pocket Companion 1859, the first book exclusively devoted to baseball was issued in cloth over flexible paper wrappers). This title is usually found disbound or rebound, this is easily the best copy we've seen of one of the most uncommon and important titles exclusively devoted to baseball. ABPC auction records locate only a single record in 2009 for a copy in cloth. Additional research locates a copy in this binding that sold in a sport's auction (apparently not indexed by ABPC) in 2003 for $11,625; and another copy at the The 27th Annual 2006 National Sports Collectors Convention, offered for sale at $20,000. .

In Old Peking: Sights and Sounds Chinese

Np/nd: Author. Small Octavo. Edith Agnes Punnett (1868-1938) was a British citizen born in India whose career as the major Beijing dealer in rare Chinese art led to the Philadelphia Art Museum's acquisition of the magnificent Chinese Reception Chamber. Her work from 1920 to 1938 as an expert on the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) led to her obtaining for the museum's first curator of Asian Art, Horace H.F. Jayne one of the rarest items to survive in tact from the Forbidden City. Her expertise in art as well as knowing how to pressure distant family members and the bribery of officials allowed the piece to be brought to the United States in the summer of 1929. 17 typed leaves of a poem for children titled: "In Old Peking: Sights and Sounds Chinese". n.d. fan-folded. Each of the leaves have her hand illustrated color pictures of old Chinese life from that of the Coolie, the barber at work, and to an ornate wedding procession. In original clamshell case with hand painted scene on cover and on inside cover of case, split to hinge of box but reiforced with mending tissue. Previous owner's later inscription inside case and lightly finger soiled. A Marvelous poem of a China that was largely devoid of Western influence from the custom of foot-binding for girls to the customs of children or old men recounting the past. Such items from a Western perspective yet evincing a warm look at a bygone era have become scarce. Her correspondence from the era is found at the Library of Congress and Duke.

        Vlaggenkaart, 1868.

EERSTE AMERIKAANSE OVERZICHT VAN "S WERELDS ZEEVARENDE NATIES."Johnson's new chart of national emblems"'. Prijs: € 650,-.
