Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication was a full statement of the facts on which the theories of the Origin of Species were based, though leaving aside an account of human evolution for The Descent of Man (1871).

The Peaks and Valleys of the Alps.

London Sampson Low Son and Marston 1868 - Folio (55,9 x 36 cm). Additional tinted lithographed title, 21 plates chromolithographed by J.H. Lowes after Walton, each mounted as issued with printed caption in margin, tissue guards, one leaf of text loose, additional title with small repair at blank fore-margin and browning. Contemporary half morocco gilt, titled in gilt on upper cover, lightly soiled, a very good copy. A fine series of chromolithographed views of, primarily, the Western Alps, including the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc, Monte Viso, Aosta Valley, Dent Du Midi, and The Grivola. In 1862 William Matthews, the founder of the Alpine Club, first commissioned the landscape artist Elijah Walton to travel to the Alps, and for the next five years he journeyed to various parts of the region to paint. The text for Peaks and Valleys is by the geologist T.G. Bonney who, having himself made nine visits to the Alps, testifies to the Ruskinian authenticity of Walton's views, praising them favourably to "photographs of mountains [which] are rarely satisfactory, and generally make them appear lower and far less impressive than they really are."         Autograph Manuscript, unsigned, fair copy, of his poem "Old Grimes"

N.p. [Providence, RI?], 1868. 3 pages on a single bifolium, in ink. 4to. Fine. With light pencilled comment at top "A.G. Greene of Providence". 3 pages on a single bifolium, in ink. 4to. "Old Grimes" - A Manuscript. Written anonymously by a 20-year-old Brown University student, A.G. Greene (1802-1868), and first published in a student newspaper in 1823, "Old Grimes" quickly became part of the popular folklore of the nation, and, when set to music, one of the country's most familiar songs. Greene's poem was not published in book form until 1867, with illustrations by Augustus Hoppins. By then, Greene had acknowledged his authorship of the entire poem, with the exception of the first stanza -- which was know to him as a familiar refrain or nursery rhyme, and which he used as a lead-in to the rest of the poem. The first stanza reads: "Old Grimes is dead; that good old man; "We never shall see more "He used to wear a long black coat "All buttoned down before." A rare piece of American popular culture, indeed. John L. Harrison, "The Author of Old Grimes", in THE SCRAPBOOK, Vol. 3, pp. 605-607

CARNET DE DESSINS - Famille HOMMEY]

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Enid

1868 - TENNYSON, Alfred. Enid. London: Edward Moxon, 1868. Large folio (12-1/2 by 16-1/2 inches), original full red morocco rebacked with original spine laid down, raised bands, inlaid blue morocco title piece within ornamental gilt cover border, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. $2500.First Doré-illustrated edition of Tennyson’s Enid (one of the stories in his poetic treatment of Arthurian legend, Idylls of the King), with nine rich, large folio steel engravings by Doré, beautifully bound in original full gilt-decorated red morocco."One of the finest lyrists of the English tongue" (Kunitz & Haycraft, 612), Tennyson reawakened the general reading public's interest in Arthurian legend with his Idylls of the King. The first four of the cycle's eventual 12 poems were published in 1859. Tennyson's retelling of the old tales placed them "on a new plateau of respect and significance for writers and artists" (Lacy, 446). "No other foreign illustrator and few native ones of the period so completely captured the English fancy [as Doré]… Tennyson and his publisher Moxon greatly favored Doré as an illustrator" (Muir, Victorian Illustrated Books, 227, 244). Moxon was, in fact, "the only publisher ever to commission steel engravings from Doré. Moxon's total cost for these editions must have been staggering… [He] would publish a series of individual stories from Idylls of the King and then combine them. [He] would offer each story in three formats: a regular folio book edition containing steel engravings [as here], a portfolio of photogravures of the original art, and a set of India Proofs, each proof signed by Doré, Tennyson and the engraver… The steel engravings give much more of a speckled look to the scenes, different from the grainy look of Doré's usual wood engravings. It produces a dreamy, mystical, serene [feeling] that is quite different for Doré" (Malan, 97). With nine wonderful full-page steel engravings. Malan, 303. Gift inscription.Scattered light foxing, top edges of last few leaves lightly rubbed. Board edges expertly restored. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Signed photographic portrait.

Freshwater, Isle of Wight , 1868. Albumen print. Mounted on carte-de-visite card. Very good condition, light dust-staining, small unobtrusive stain in upper background. Image size: 9 x 6 cm Card size: 10 x 6.3 cm Darwin said of this image: "I like this photograph very much better than any other which has been made of me". Darwin and his family spent six weeks at Freshwater in July and August 1868, renting a cottage from the Camerons and getting on famously with another of her visitors, Alfred Tennyson. Darwin was in fact one of the few sitters who paid for the privilege of being photographed: "Darwin left the Isle of Wight having been entirely charmed with Cameron's renowned wit and her photographic camera. That week she made four exposures of Darwin, which lend extraordinary depth of tone and detail to Darwin's increasingly well-known beard and penetrating gaze" (ibid.)

AMONG THE INDIANS EIGHT YEARS IN THE FAR WEST: 1858 - 1866 EMBRACING SKETCHES OF MONTANA AND SALT LAKE

Philadelphia, 1868. Original cloth, spine gilt. A couple small nicks at spine ends, bookplate carefully removed from rear pastedown. Otherwise a fine, clean copy, with the map in pristine condition. Boller entered the fur trade on the Upper Missouri in 1858, in the service of the American Fur Company. Most of the book deals with his experiences with the Indians in Montana as a trader for the Company. His account is one of the most vivid and well written narratives of the trade, and one of the few relating to the period it addresses. At the end of his sojourn in the West, Boller spent some time in Utah among the Mormons. Although this book bears an imprint of 1868, it was probably printed the previous year, as Graff owned a copy that was inscribed on Oct. 31, 1867. Wheat describes the map as notable for the places located and described in the text. It shows Montana and the Dakotas, with parts of Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska.

Heidelberg, 30. VII. 1868. 2 S., 8°. An den österr. Chemiker u. - Versand D: 12,00 EUR Helmholtz, Schrötter, Physiologie, Physik, Brief, Letter, Lettre, Briefe, Autograph, Autographe, Autographen, Autograf, Autografe, Autografen, Signatur, Signiert, Signed, Signature, Unterschrift, Eigenhändig, Handschrift, Handschriften, Manuscript, Manuscrit, ALS, A.L.S., LAS, L.A.S.

The Game of Base Ball: How to Learn it, How to Play it, and How to Teach it - With Sketches of Noted Players

New York: George Munro & Co, 1868. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. Henry Chadwick was the preeminent sportswriter of his day and regarded as one of the baseball's founding fathers. While writing about baseball Chadwick was also actively contributing to the game's evolution as a board member on various rules committees. Volume includes rules and instructions for the game, profiles of many leading players, summaries of famous matches, box scores, and other important historical information relating to the early days of the game, much of it found nowhere else and is considered a cornerstone of all important baseball libraries. In addition to its historical significance, the book is also extremely rare. It is believed that there are fewer than twenty copies in existence, making this a highly sought-after volume by both baseball collectors and bibliophiles alike. OCLC records only eight copies in an archival setting. Housed in a leather bound slipcase with raised bands and gold titling, into which slips the book in a green cloth covered folio. 180 pp, + 11 pp ads at rear. Green quarter cloth spine with green paper covered boards. Boards have considerable scuffing and wear, minor losses at corners, lower right corner of front board has paper loss revealing cardboard cover. Age toning to pastedowns, stain on second free endpaper has transferred to first and third free endpaper. "Henry Chadwick" is written in pencil below Chadwick's engraved portrait on the frontispiece. Two pages, 91/92 & 93/94 are torn with small paper loss in lower right corners. A number of pages also display light foxing. The spine remains tight and all of the pages are firmly attached.

An incredible set of three logbooks kept by a Royal Navy midshipman between 1868 and 1873, filled with over 50 masterful illustrations and maps!

n.p., n.d.. various. "A set of three logbooks kept by F.O. Passy who served aboard the H.M.S., Prince Consort as a naval cadet and midshipman in 1868, and as a sub lieutenant aboard the H.M.S. Druid between 1872 and 1873. The first volume is a LOG BOOK. (Portsea: James Griffin & Co., [n.y.], 246 pp. filled in, + tipped in illustrations and maps, 4to., bound in cloth gilt-titled boards, ""LOG OF H.M.S. PRINCE CONSORT 4045, TONS, 1000. H.P. COMMANDED BY Wm. ARMYTAGE ESQr CAPTAIN AND KEPT BY F.O. PASSY N.C. & MEDn."" with leather spine with gilt rules, were maintained by Passy between April 1, 1868 and May 19, 1870. The other two volumes, both entitled: LOG BOOK. (Ruled.) (AS ALLOWED TO BE USED BY TEH EXAMINERS.) (Portsea: James Griffin & Co., 1865), 167pp. & 55pp. filled in,+ illustrations tipped in, 4to. both bound in full-calf with hand-titling and decorated with an image of a ship on the first volume and an anchor on the second, were maintained by Passy between January 5 1872 and November 12, 1873. Rubbing to boards and spines, boards to 1868 log partly-detached, some soiling to boards, pages mostly clean and bright. The three volumes, all of which bear the typical entries noting weather and crew activities, feature a variety of artworks by Passy, which he tipped into the binding between various pages, including watercolors, gray washes, drawings, and manuscript maps documenting the ships' track. The first logbook documents Passy's first voyage aboard the Prince Consort during its cruise of the Mediterranean Sea between April 1868 and May 1870. The ship, originally named the Triumph when it was launched in 1862, was renamed Prince Consort in honor of the deceased Prince Albert, consort to Queen Victoria. Initially laid down in 1860 as a ninety-one gun Bulwark-class wooden battleship, she was later converted into broadside ironclad. A member of the Mediterranean Fleet, the Prince Consort's route, is minutely documented in a series of manuscript maps including its track sailing off the west coast of Portugal, the southern Mediterranean, Sicily to Greece (three total), Sicily and the boot of Italy (two total), Gibraltar to Corsica (hand-colored), the west coast of Spain (two total; one hand-colored), the Nile Delta (hand-colored), Sicily to Syracuse, and Sicily to Crete. Also included are fourteen original drawings (three of which are hand-colored) depicting mostly landscapes and fortifications as seen from the ship. The second two log books document the maiden voyage of the H.M.S. Druid which had been laid down in 1867, launched in 1869 and completed in February 1872. For the next year and a half, it cruised the west coast of Africa and contains eighteen original works of art depicting fauna, e.g. jellyfish, butterflies, and South African cattle, flora, landscapes, ships, native weaponry, the ship's layout, and a beautiful hand-drawn and painted frontispiece featuring a gold loop entwined with holly reading ""Log of H.M.S. Druid The Honble M.H. Nelson."" Much like the first log, these volumes include seven hand-drawn maps charting the ship's course from England to South Africa, the Gulf of Guinea (two total), the coast of South Africa (two total), Ivory Coast, and the town of Elmina. Each map, excluding the map of Elmina, locates the ship's position by date and provides an excellent visual reference for the entries. Also of interest is a mention, in the third volume, of a bombardment of the village of Beyin, on the coast of Ghana, noted in an entry on October 16, 1873: ""8:30 [a.m.] Ship opened fire on village with shot and shell . . . firing rockets . . . 2:30 [p.m.] Ceased firing."" Beyin is the site of Fort Apollonia which was originally built as a British trading post in 1691 and was used in the slave trade until it's abolition by Britain in 1819. In 1868, the fort was traded to the Netherlands, but soon again became a British possession, together with the entire Dutch Gold Coast, in 1872. Local residents resisted the transfer, and entered into a collation with the Asante Kingdom. The British bombardment, which nearly completely destroyed Fort Apollonia, was intended to enforce British control of the costal village and its environs and is one of the opening salvos of what became known as the Third Anglo-Ashanti War (1873-1874).         [ALBUMEN PHOTOGRAPH SHOWING THE CONSTRUCTION OF A RAILROAD BRIDGE IN THE GREEN RIVER VALLEY, WITH CITADEL ROCK IN THE BACKGROUND, CAPTIONED ON VERSO:] No. 78. CITADEL ROCK. TEMPORARY & PERMANENT BRIDGES AT GREEN RIVER

[Wyoming Territory, 1868. Image faded, some chips at edges of the card mount, else very good. In a museum quality rag mat. The dream of a transcontinental railroad stirred the imaginations of many Americans during the 19th century. It was not until 1862, when President Lincoln signed the Pacific Railroad Act, that the first serious steps toward a transcontinental railroad project got underway. Soon thereafter the federally subsidized Union Pacific Railroad and Central Pacific Railroad companies took up the massive task of building the railroad, a project which shifted into high gear with the end of the Civil War. The Union Pacific was responsible for construction westward from Omaha, while the Central Pacific built the line east from San Francisco. By 1868 the Union Pacific had reached Wyoming and was pressing west rapidly. Andrew J. Russell was born in New Hampshire and grew up in New York. Originally trained as a painter, he served as a photographer for Union military railroads during the Civil War. In 1868 the Union Pacific Railroad employed him to record its transcontinental progress in evocative images that documented both remarkable engineering efforts and equally impressive natural scenery. As the railroad made its way across Wyoming and into Utah, Russell made three trips along the line, one in 1868 and two in 1869, to photograph its progress, its bridges, locomotives, towns en route, awe-inspiring scenery, and ultimately the famed Golden Spike ceremony, when the Union and Central Pacific Railroads met at Promontory Point, Utah on May 10, 1869. The present image was photographed in Wyoming Territory's Green River Valley in the winter of 1868. In the image, a temporary wooden trestle bridge is seen along the right, with a locomotive on it; along the left runs a stone bridge under construction. A reduced version of this image appeared in Hayden's SUN PICTURES OF ROCKY MOUNTAIN SCENERY. The completion of the first trans-continental railroad, perhaps more than any other single event, enabled the settlement of the West, ushering in a new era in American history.

Original green cloth, blind-panelled covers, titles to spines gilt, dark green-coated endpapers. 43 woodcuts to the text. 32 pages of publisher's advertisements dated April 1867 to rear of vol. I; 1 page dated February 1868 to vol. II. Binder's ticket of Edmonds & Remnants to rear pastedown of vol. I, contemporary ownership inscription to title-pages. Extremities gently bumped, light spotting to prelims and end-matter as usual, the occasional small spill-burn to no loss; vol. I with plate removed from front free endpaper, small chip to fore edge of title-page and short closed tear to fore edge of C3 to no loss, hinge slightly tender between gatherings T and U in vol. II. An excellent copy, the cloth clean and fresh, gilt titles to spine notably bright, and internally crisp in both volumes. First edition, first issue, one of 1,500 copies printed; scarce in the original cloth. The term "survival of the fittest" (borrowed at Wallace's insistence from Herbert Spencer's 1866 Principles of Biology) was first used by Darwin in the first edition of this work, preceding its first use in the fifth edition of the Origin of Species (1869). Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication was a full statement of the facts on which the theories of the Origin of Species were based, though leaving aside an account of human evolution for The Descent of Man (1871).

Voina I Mir (War and Peace).

Moscow: T. Ris, 1868-69. First edition. Octavo, 3 volumes, contemporary half morocco, gilt titles to the spine. All half titles present. Unlike Anna Karenina, War and Peace first appeared in full book form, not in periodicals. Six parts bound in three volumes. In very good condition with all the half title pages present, pre-revolutionary stamp on the title pages. Some light foxing and wear to the page edges, a clean set of this rarity. Only a handful of first editions have appeared at auction in the last eighty years. Widely considered the greatest novel ever written, War and Peace is at once an epic of the Napoleonic Wars, a philosophical study, and a celebration of the human spirit. Tolstoy?'s genius is seen clearly in the multitude of characters in this massive chronicle—all of them fully realized and equally memorable. Out of this complex narrative emerges a profound examination of the individual?'s place in the historical process, one that makes it clear why Thomas Mann praised Tolstoy for his Homeric powers and placed War and Peace in the same category as the Iliad: "To read him . . . is to find one?'s way home . . . to everything within us that is fundamental and sane." "There remains the greatest of all novelists--for what else can we call the author of War and Peace" (Virginia Woolf).

        Photograph Signed

Union general in charge of all armies of the United States during the Civil War; eighteenth president of the United States (1868-76). Signed "Bureau, Engraving & Printing" steel-engraved head-and-shoulders portrait, 4" X 5½" (mounted to slightly larger card), n.p., n.d. Very good. Bit of faint age toning and foxing. Set within an oval and partly-encircling decorative flourish, this three-quarter's view portrait depicts a slimmer Grant in suit and tie early in his presidency. He signs below his likeness in brown ink, large and bold. Grant is known to have signed only a small number of these Bureau of Engraving likenesses. This particular example comes with a unique provenance, hailing from the library of his granddaughter, Nellie Grant Cronan (1881-1972), daughter of the president's youngest son, Jesse R. Grant. A type letter signed by a direct descendant outlining this provenance accompanies this item, which is displayed in the simple modern silver-finish frame in which the granddaughter kept it.

BENEDICT ARNOLD & HORATIO SEYMOUR! THEIR IDENTITY OF VIEWS. WHO IS TO BE THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES? FROM THE New York Times OF SEPTEMBER 19, 1864 [caption title]

Brooklyn, 1868. Some small tears, chipping and loss at top and right edges. Minor foxing. Very good. Broadside printed for the U.S. Presidential Campaign of 1868, which pitted former New York governor Horatio Seymour against Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. This broadside points out Seymour's Copperhead tendencies and statements made by him in 1864, linking him to similar sentiments made by notorious traitor Benedict Arnold. Seymour's Copperhead utterances during the war haunted his campaign, and he lost decisively to Grant. The text printed here strives to demonstrate: "...the points made by Horatio Seymour against the Administration in 1864 [are] identical, point by point, with those made by Benedict Arnold against Washington and the Continental Congress in 1780....The Copperhead chiefs of these times, who draw so lavishly upon the sophistries and fallacies of 1780 for the furtherance of their factious designs, cannot too well understand that the sequel to all this is endless disgrace. They must not expect to fight the Government with weapons of the Tories and of the blue-light Federalists, without sharing the same fate." OCLC locates three copies (incorrectly dated 1864), at the New-York Historical Society, the Library Company, and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library.

        Eigenh. Manuskript.

      O. O., etwa 1858 bis 1868. - 130 SS. Weinrotes, ledergebundenes Schreibheft. 4to. | "G. F. Händel von Friedrich Chrysander [.] | Hansen, friesische Sagen und Erzählungen [.] | Dorner (Edmund) Roswitha, die Nonne aus Gandersheim [.] | Schwedische Volkslieder der Vorzeit. Aus der Sammlung von Erik, Gustav Geijer und Arvid Afzelius [.] | Leggende e tradizioni [.] opera de F. A. de Felici. Napoli [.] | Recollections of the last four Popes and of Rome in their times [.] | Seaside Studies at Ilfracombe, Tenby, the Scilly Isles, and Jersey by Henry Lewes [.] | The Life of Percy Byssche [!] Shelley [.]".
