Russell, Lady William (Elizabeth Anne; geb. Rawdon), engl. Adelige (1793–1874).
Karlsbad (überwiegend), London u.a. bzw. ohne Ort, 1844-1867 bzw. o. J. „Lady William Russell (1793–1874) was the wife of Lord George William Russell and a notorious socialite. Elizabeth Anne was the only child of Captain the Hon. John Theophilus Rawdon (died 1808), the brother of Francis Rawdon-Hastings, 1st Marquess of Hastings. She married Russell on 21 June 1817. A beautiful and energetic cosmopolitan who had enjoyed a broad European education, Lord Byron praised her in „Beppo" as one whose bloom could, after dancing, dare the dawn. However, her outspoken Tory sympathies won her few friends among her husband's Liberal circle. Henry Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux described her as that accursed woman. She and Russell had three sons, all of whom she tutored at home, perhaps lending them a rather distinctive approach to life [.]. Benjamin Disraeli said in conversation, I think she is the most fortunate woman in England, for she has the three nicest sons" (Wikipedia). - „[.] Im Hause der seiner Familie von Karlsbad her befreundeten Lady William Russel und mit deren später im öffentlichen Leben eine Rolle spielenden Söhnen Arthur und Odo verbrachte M. S. Augustus Mitchell
1867. The Mitchell company was one of the first to try out the new technique of engraving on steel plates, experimenting with steel almost 20 years before the rest of the publishing industry. He was printing with steel in the early 1830's; the general switch to steel was approximately 1850. During the early years of the company, Mitchell published mainly maps and travel guides. In 1860, Mitchell started producing "Mitchell's New General Atlas", and Mitchell Sr. retired and turned the business over to his son of the same name. The New General Atlas was published until 1893. Today Mitchell maps are sought after for their fine engraving, bright coloring, and attention to detail. They are some of the finest maps produced in the 1860's. This map produced in 1867, has Mitchell's unique floral border, and beautiful hand coloring. This map details Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado and the southern portion of Dacotah. Counties, cities, towns, transportation routes, Native American lands and topographical features are illustrated. A very rare map!

Marx, Karl.
Hamburg, Otto Meissner, 1867. - 8vo (131 x 219 mm). Inscribed "Seinem Georg Eccarius / Lond. 18 Sept. 1867. Karl Marx" on verso of title, two small pencil corrections and one ink correction to text, presumably in the hand of Eccarius. Contemporary half calf. Stored in custom-made half morocco case. First edition. Inscribed four days after publication to the secretary general of the First International, Johann Georg Eccarius, "one of my oldest friends and adherents": the most important Karl Marx presentation copy ever to have come to the market. "Amongst the most influential pieces of writing in world history" (International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam), "Das Kapital" was the culmination of many years' work in the British Museum. This first volume was the only one published during Marx's lifetime, the later volumes, edited by Engels from the author's manuscript, appearing in 1885 and 1894. Marx's own annotated copy, along with the only surviving handwritten page of the Communist Manifesto, were inscribed on the prestigious UNESCO "Memory of the World Register" in 2013. - Johann Georg Eccarius (1818-89, also known as John George Eccarius) was a German emigré tailor and labour activist who joined the English branch of the League of the Just, a group of German artisans and professionals who had fled from Paris after the failure of the 1839 uprising. In 1846 Marx and Engels, then living in Brussels, were invited to join the League, which was in the process of evolving into the Communist League, and the following year they attended its second congress in London.

Storer, David Humphreys
Cambridge and Boston: Welch & Bigelow and Dakin & Metcalf, 1867. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. In marbled boards with leather spine and corners. Illustrated with 39 black and white lithographs, the last of which is a fold-out. Book includes sections IV, XII, VII, XV, and X (in that order). For some reason, even though these sections are out of order, they correspond correctly to the illustrations at the back of the book (i.e., the last illustration described in section IV is plate 16, and the first illustration described in section XII is plate 17). Sections are separately numbered, with consecutive numbers hand written beginning in section XII. Page numbers of corresponding descriptions have been added, mostly in pencil, to margins of prints. See photos to clarify my somewhat confusing explanation. Surface wear to boards and spine. Foxing to many plates, mostly in margins. Large tear to fold-out plate. Overall very solid and well preserved. Very rare work of natural history. Extra shipping charges may apply for this large book.
