Orig. akvarel. Sejlende skibe med jolle.

1867 1867 - Signeret 1867 . 22x30,5 cm. [ 39x50 cm.]. * C.F. There is also no publisher's name printed to the foot of the first page of music in the second issue. See Crawford pp. 578-579. Don Carlos, to a libretto by Joseph Méry and Camille Du Locle after Friedrich von Schiller's dramatic poem Don Carlos, Infant von Spanien, was first performed in Paris at the Opéra on March 11, 1867 and in a revised version in four acts (French text revised by Du Locle, Italian translation by Achille de Lauzières and Angelo Zanardini) in Milan at the Teatro alla Scala January 10, 1884.". Don Carlos has of late become one of the best-loved and most respected of Verdi's operas. The simple fact is, of course, that Verdi dedicated to the work some of his greatest dramatic music. One need think only of the magnificent series of confrontational duets that form such a great part of the drama. Several of these break decisively with traditional models, forging for themselves a vital new relationship between musical and dramatic progress. It is for such moments that Don Carlos will be remembered and treasured." Roger Parker in Grove Music Online. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Payroll of the New York and Austin Silver Mining Company - No. 12

1867 - (NEVADA MINING). Pay Roll of the New York & Austin Silver Mining Company, Austin, Reese River District, Nevada. No. 12. Austin, Nevada: New York & Austin Silver Mining Company, July 31st, 1867. Folio, single leaf, printed ledger form completed in manuscript, with United States and Nevada revenue stamps affixed; docketed on verso. $2800.Original payroll ledger for the "Florida Mine" of the New York & Austin Silver Mining Company, dated July 31st, 1867, completed in manuscript with the names of the mine's employees along with their daily wages, signed for by each and with original revenue stamps affixed. In excellent condition""Nevada and United States revenue stamps from this period are quite uncommon.Formed in 1866 by a group of New York businessmen, the New York and Austin Silver Mining Company had a successful ten-year run in the Reese River District of Nevada; the owners named Edwin A. Sherman, an experienced public official and newspaper editor, as superintendent of mining activities. This page from the payroll ledger gives ample evidence that the company, while recently formed, was a well-run business with tight controls and accountability brought about by a substantial capital investment and competent management. From the estate of the company's superintendent at the mine in Austin, Nevada, Edwin A. Sherman. Sherman (1829-1914), a native of Brocton, Massachusetts, worked for a series of newspapers before enlisting in the army during the Mexican-American War, where he assisted with the army newspaper American Flag. After the war he traveled to California in the Gold Rush, mining for a while before once again turning to writing and editing. After serving in a variety of local offices in California and Nevada during the 1850s and 60s, Sherman eaccepted the position of superintendent for the New York & Austin Silver Mining Company in 1866. He resigned in 1869 to take up a series of public offices in Nevada. He returned to San Francisco in 1877, spending his remaining years in the Bay area, contributing to local newspapers and magazines, especially on mining matters.Fold lines. Fine condition.

        Bishop Percy's Folio Manuscript

1867 - PERCY, Thomas. Bishop Percy's Folio Manuscript. London: N. Trübner, 1867-68. Four volumes bound as three. Large, thick octavo, early 20th-century full olive morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled and gilt. $3800.First edition of this important publication of the original folio manuscript that "stimulated an extensive rehabilitation of the repute of English balladry," expertly edited by Hale and Furnivall, splendidly bound in full morocco-gilt.Although Percy was already an accomplished bishop and writer, this work "was to immortalize him. For some time he had possessed an old folio manuscript containing copies, in an early 17th-century handwriting, of many old poems". He had found it one day "˜lying dirty on the floor in a bureau in the parlour' of his friend Humphrey Pitt of Shifnall in Shropshire, "˜being used by the maids to light the fire,' and had begged it of its careless owner. Percy assembled enough ballads to make three volumes called Reliques of Ancient English Poetry (1765). As an editor of ballads Percy had had more than one predecessor in the earlier 18th century; but". he had more success and influence than his predecessors. The volumes stimulated an extensive rehabilitation of the repute of English balladry" (Baugh et al., 1017). "The book made an epoch in the history of English literature. It promoted with lasting effect the revival of interest in our older poetry" (DNB). "Percy's magnum opus [was] of tremendous importance to antiquaries and poets alike". his rediscovery of older English poetry was destined to inspire the poets of the Romantic revival in Germany as well as England" (Kunitz & Haycraft, 404-405). In 1868, Professor J.W. Hales and Dr. F.J. Furnivall edited the original folio from which Percy took the poetry and published it in three volumes; this is the first edition of that work, together with the extremely scarce fourth volume of songs also taken from the manuscript (here bound as part of the third volume). Also issued in a limited edition of 65 copies on fine paper. Bookplates.Spines uniformly toned to brown, light expert restoration to beautiful morocco binding.         Alice's Adventures in Wonderland [together with] Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There

London: Macmillan and Co.,, 1867 & 1872. 2 volumes, octavo (121 × 179 mm). Bound by Riviere & Son in near-contemporary brown calf, twin morocco labels to spines lettered gilt, gilt decoration to spine compartments, gilt rules to boards, all edges and turn-ins gilt, marbled endpapers, original wrappers bound-in at rear. Illustrated throughout by Sir John Tenniel. Some light rubbing to extremities, some spotting to rear cover of Looking Glass. small crack to front hinges but still sound, occasional light foxing to contents. An excellent set. First edition, first issue of Through the Looking-Glass (with the misspelling of "wabe" in the second line of the poem on p. 21), and early printing of Alice's Adventures (first published the preceding year). A handsomely bound set. Laid in is the printed leaflet "To all Child-Readers of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'", a letter of good wishes for Christmas and the New Year from Dodgson to his readers, dated 1871. As there is no specific mention of Through the Looking-Glass, Williams?Madan?Green?Crutch speculate that this little four-page leaflet could have been inserted in copies of the 1872 edition of Alice and also in copies of Through the Looking-Glass, published the same month as this. On 22 November 1871, Dodgson noted in his diary: "Heard from Menella Smedley, approving of the little Christmas address I had sent her in MS."

The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County

      C. H. Webb, New York 1867 - TWAIN, Mark (Samuel L. Clemens) (1835-1910) The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County ¿The Most Famous Tale in California, if Not Western, History¿(Kurutz) Clemens got the idea for this tale as he heard it told around the pot belly stove in the general store in Angels Camp, California. Mark Twain the humorist had been "born" in the Territorial Enterprise during Clemens¿ tenure as editor of that paper in Virginia City. He submitted this work to his friend Artemus Ward for inclusion in a book of humorous stories Ward was then publishing in New York. Unfortunately, the submission arrived too late for inclusion. However, Clemens¿ friend, Charles Webb, arranged to publish the "Frog" as the lead story in a book of additional material by Clemens. Some of the stories were re-published in later years; some tales were not. Because of this being the earliest book of Twain¿s stories, the humor is somewhat uneven, giving us a glimpse of this giant of American literature as he was beginning to mature C. H. Webb, New York: 1867. Green cloth hardcover. First Edition, Second Issue of Twain¿s first book. 12 mo. 198 pages. Original green cloth, beveled boards, gilt- stamped cover and spine titles, gilt-stamped frog lower left corner of upper cover; expertly partially re-cased, spine ends restored. Housed in a green clamshell case, gilt-stamped spine title, rule and date. One of the most elusive first editions of Clemens, this book was issued in an edition of a little over 1000 copies. Twenty or so days later, another 550 copies were printed from the same stereotype plates. The only difference between the issues (as per BAL) is that the first issue has a single cream-colored leaf of advertisements inserted at the front, and individual letters of type at pages 66 and 198 are undamaged. This copy shows the battered type and no evidence of the advertising leaf and is therefore a second issue. The binding was issued in several different color cloth (without priority), and the gilt- stamped frog on the cover is in the lower left corner; some copies are known with the frog facing the top of the book, in the middle of the upper cover. Again, no priority is assigned Book previously owned by ¿Ella France Gage, Shasta Cal, The lady of Fountain House¿ written in pencil on rear pastedown.         Atala

1867 - CHATEAUBRIAND. Atala. London and New York: Cassell, Petter, and Galpin, [1867]. Folio (measures 12 by 15 inches), contemporary full red morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spine and covers, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. $3500.First edition in English of Chateaubriand's novella set among the Native Americans of Louisiana to appear with all 44 of Doré's illustrations""30 full-page folio plates, 14 in-text vignettes""beautifully bound in full contemporary morocco-gilt by MacArthur of Belfast.Chateaubriand was born into nobility in 1768, but the privileges of being a noble in France evaporated when the French Revolution broke out, and in 1791 he fled to America. "Atala tells the story of a Euro-American girl who has taken a vow to remain celibate but who falls in love with a Natchez man. Torn between love and religion, she poisons herself to keep from breaking her vow. The lush Louisiana setting and the playing-out of romantic passion in primitive American surroundings are captured in a rich, harmonious prose style that yields many beautiful descriptive passages" (Encyclopedia Britannica). Doré's illustrations are "the most beautiful depiction of nature that Doré ever achieved""the lush tropical vegetation of the virgin forest. It contains the best white-on-black effects I have ever seen. These illustrations truly are black-and-white paintings. Prior to this no one thought such tings could be done with wood engravings" (Malan, 65). "Looking at Doré's total accomplishment, one can hardly deny that he is not merely one of the most popular but also one of the greatest of all illustrators". Every imagination appeared languid in comparison with his" (Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book, 329). First published with Doré's 44 illustrations in French in Paris in 1863. In 1864, Leypoldt of Philadelphia issued an "Atala Album" but with 12 illustrations only. This Cassell, Petter, & Gilpin edition is the first English language edition to appear with all 44 illustrations. Malan, 261. About-fine condition, beautifully bound.         FIRST BOOK IN RUSSIAN ABOUT LINCOLN] Avraam Linkol'n i velikaya bor'ba mezhdu Severnymi i Yuzhnymi amerikanskimi shtatami v prodolzheniye 1861-1865 godov. Per. s nem. [i.e. Abraham Lincoln and The Great Struggle between the North and South during 1861-1865. Translated from German]

tip. Kukol'-Yasnopol'skogo, St. Petersburg 1867 - [2], 474, IV pp., 1 port. 8vo. Contemporary quarter-leather binding with gilt-lettering and decoration on the spine, decorations on boards in blind. Very good. Rubbed, few spots and owner's ink stamp on the title-page. First edition. The book is translated from German the year after original publication. The first book about Linkoln in Russian came out in time of interesting parallels between America and Russia in 1860s. Avraam Linkoln was more influencial in Russian life than it seemed at first. Although they were very different Russia and USA maintained friendly relations during difficult for America 1860s. Lincoln personally asked Russian chancellor A. Gorchakov for help and Gorchakov sent him these words: "Your country was just born when Russians stand by your bedside. We don't need neither Northern nor Southern states. We'll be satisfied only with United Stated of America". Lincoln always said Russian and America were congenial. In 1863-1864 Russian navy visited San-Francisco(squadron of rear admiral A. Popov)and New York(squadron of rear admiral S. Lesovsky) to protect American ports if English or French forces attacked them. There is also an interesting parallel between two leaders living in the same time - Lincoln, emancipator of slaves, and Alexander II The Liberator of serfs. Both signed the most significant documents of the time with two years difference. Well-known that Uncle Tom's Cabin was almost a desk book for Lincoln. Its French copy was also in personal library of Tsar. They were corresponding, and though it's quite formal Alexander signed his letters "Your good friend" in Russian and French while Lincoln did the same in English. Both tragically were murdered by their opponents. In 1867 American delegation with Mark Twain among them met with Alexander II in Livadia and gave him a thanksgiving address which contained these words: "America owes much to Russia: first of all for her unwavering friendship in the years of her greatest need. We pray to God this friendship continues in future. We are confident America is grateful and will be grateful to Russia and her Sovereign". [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
