[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Newly bound in quarter gray cloth with gray paper over boards, top edge gilded. Occasional woodcut illustrations, with one albumen portrait appearing in Vol. 3 (1860-61), Vol. 5 (1862-63), and Vol. 4 (1861-62), which contains an albumen portrait as well as a subminiature albumen portrait and a subminiature salted paper photograph of 3 views of a wooden box camera for making subminiature images in series. In Vol. 9 (1866-67) is an example of a photolithograph by the Osborne process. Patent Office copies, with neat ink stamps in each volume. The American Journal of Photography began publication in New York City as the American Journal of Photography and the Allied Arts and Sciences in 1852. The journal was founded by Charles A. Seely, professor of analytical chemistry at the New York Medical School, who had also worked at Scientific American before starting the journal. Henry Garbanati, Seely's partner in the photographic chemical business, and a fellow member of the American Photographical Society, joined him as publisher in 1859. Seely edited the journal until 1867.The biweekly journal had a wide subscribership beyond New York City and drew correspondence from readership of amateurs and commercial photographers across the United States. In 1859, the journal began publishing the minutes of the American Photographical Society; it shared the concerns of the society's founders, among them chemist and physician John W. Draper, his son, astronomer and photographer Henry C. Draper, Henry Hunt Snelling (publisher of The Photographic and Fine Arts Journal) commercial photographer Abraham Bogardus, astrophysicist and astronomer Lewis M. Rutherford (who first photographed the moon in 1858), Peter Cooper, founder of Cooper Institute, and Robert MacFarlane, editor of Scientific American, primarily with science and photographic chemistry. Articles explaining and evaluating photographic chemistry complete with chemical formulae fill the journal. The journal regularly reported on and evaluated photographic trade manuals published in the U.S. and abroad, with several excerpted or serialized in the journal. The journal relied on reprints and excepts from other publications, reprinting commentaries and lectures from British and French publications." Excerpted from the article by Andrea L Volpe in the Encyclopedia of 19th Century Photography. Publication history: 1852 - 1857 (first series); 1858 - 1867 (new series); absorbed by Humphrey's Journal of Photography at the end of 1867, which in turn ceased publication in 1870. WorldCat locates 8 locations, several of which are incomplete holdings. [Attributes: First Edition]

[FIRST BOOK IN RUSSIAN ABOUT LINCOLN] Avraam Linkol'n i velikaya bor'ba mezhdu Severnymi i Yuzhnymi amerikanskimi shtatami v prodolzheniye 1861-1865 godov. Per. s nem. [i.e. Abraham Lincoln and The Great Struggle between the North and South during 1861-1865. Translated from German]

St. Petersburg: tip. Kukol'-Yasnopol'skogo, 1867. [2], 474, IV pp., 1 port. 8vo. Contemporary quarter-leather binding with gilt-lettering and decoration on the spine, decorations on boards in blind. Very good. Rubbed, few spots and owner's ink stamp on the title-page.  First edition. The book is translated from German the year after original publication. The first book about Linkoln in Russian came out in time of interesting parallels between America and Russia in 1860s. Avraam Linkoln was more influencial in Russian life than it seemed at first. Although they were very different Russia and USA maintained friendly relations during difficult for America 1860s. Lincoln personally asked Russian chancellor A. Gorchakov for help and Gorchakov sent him these words: "Your country was just born when Russians stand by your bedside. We don't need neither Northern nor Southern states. We'll be satisfied only with United Stated of America". Lincoln always said Russian and America were congenial. In 1863-1864 Russian navy visited San-Francisco (squadron of rear admiral A. Popov) and New York (squadron of rear admiral S. Lesovsky) to protect American ports if English or French forces attacked them.  There is also an interesting parallel between two leaders living in the same time - Lincoln, emancipator of slaves, and Alexander II The Liberator of serfs. Both signed the most significant documents of the time with two years difference. Well-known that Uncle Tom's Cabin was almost a desk book for Lincoln. Its French copy was also in personal library of Tsar. They were corresponding, and though it's quite formal Alexander signed his letters "Your good friend" in Russian and French while Lincoln did the same in English. Both tragically were murdered by their opponents.  In 1867 American delegation with Mark Twain among them met with Alexander II in Livadia and gave him a thanksgiving address which contained these words: "America owes much to Russia: first of all for her unwavering friendship in the years of her greatest need. We pray to God this friendship continues in future. We are confident America is grateful and will be grateful to Russia and her Sovereign". .

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1867 - 1867 Original Wisden in Very Good Condition

As far as I am aware, this is the first 1867 in original covers to be offered on this site. The book itself is in excellent condition. The front and rear wrappers are very slightly darkened and with the odd mark as can be seen from the photographs. The wrappers are entirely complete without any chips or loss. There is a small closed tear to the front wrapper which has not resulted in any loss at all. Internally, the book is in fabulous condition for it's age. The pages are clean, original and unmarked. The book has had no restoration whatsoever. It is very rare to find a book of this age in entirely original condition with it's original wrappers. A super copy. We also have fabulous copies for 1864 and 1868 in original wrappers which we hope to list shortly.

Framed Display! President Johnson signs a government check to his steward, African-American William Slade, who was also Abraham Lincoln's valet. Lincoln would try his speeches with Slade and it is reported that he may have even had a lost version of the Emancipation Proclamation!

Washington, DC, April 24, 1867. 8" x 3.25". "Partly Printed Check Signed ""Andrew Johnson"" as President, 8"" x 3.25"" visible. Completed in manuscript. Washington, April 21, 1867. Drawn on The First National Bank of Washington, Government Depository and Financial Agent of the United States, payable to ""Wm Slade's order"" for $1290.87. Double matted with a 5.75"" x 8"" bust portrait of Johnson. Gilt-framed under glass, overall size, 14.5"" x 21"". In apparent fine condition.William Slade, an African American. was President Lincoln's usher, valet, and messenger. Natalie Sweet wrote in her article ""A Representative 'of our people': The Agency of William Slade, Leader in the African American Community and Usher to Abraham Lincoln,"" published in the Journal of the Abraham Lincoln Association, Vol. 34 Issue 2, Summer 2013, ""The task fell to Slade to make certain that maids were on top of the cleaning, that meals were served at the appointed hour, and that footmen were in their positions at the time the Lincoln family needed them."" When Lincoln died on April 15, 1865, Slade prepared and dressed his body for burial. Slade continued working in the White House when Vice President Andrew Johnson succeeded Lincoln as President. According to Sweet, ""When the position of steward became available in the summer of 1865, President Johnson appointed Slade to the highly coveted post. As steward, Slade was now in charge of household finances - a job that only went to the most trusted of domestics. Servant pay and the buying of goods now fell under his personal responsibility. News of the appointment spread to Washingtonians by way of the Evening Star, which cheerfully announced, 'Mr. Slade is admirably qualified for his new duties, and will conduct the internal economy of the White House with all the efficiency that has characterized the discharge of his previous duties.'"" When William Slade died in 1868, President Johnson and his two daughters attended his funeral services. "

        The English Constitution.

London: Chapman and Hall,, 1867. Reprinted from the "Fortnightly Review Octavo. Original purple cloth, covers stamped with blind rule border and central floral device, spine ruled and lettered gilt, coated endpapers. Ownership inscription of "H.R.H. Prince Leopold K.G. March 1870" to the front free endpaper, with his printed bookplate as the Duke of Albany to the front pastedown. Binder's ticket of Virtue and Co. to rear pastedown. Spine lightly faded, small puncture to front joint, head of spine and front joint with short snag; one or two pale spots; an excellent copy with a royal provenance. First edition in book form, from the library of Prince Leopold, youngest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. First published in instalments in The Fortnightly Review between 1865 and 1866, "its purpose was to show the actual working of the Constitution in the period between the first and second Reform Acts, and in this it was brilliantly successful. 'No author of modern times', wrote Dicey, 'has done so much to elucidate the intricate workings of English government as Bagehot. His English Constitution is so full of brightness, originality, and wit, that few students notice how full it is also of knowledge, of wisdom, and of insight... The English Constitution is undoubtedly Bagehot's greatest work. He never revised it, although he wrote a preface for the second edition in 1872. It has retained both its freshness and relevance, and rightly ranks as one of the English classics" (St John-Stevas). "This classic account of that most elusive and least codified of entities, the Constitution of England, never lost its popularity, and shows signs of being elevated from the rank of first-class handbook to a place with De Tocqueville as one of the most important texts in political literature ... Bagehot's work is of more than English importance: it is the great defence of empirical as against theoretical politics." (PMM). From the library of Prince Leopold, eighth child and youngest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

Handbook of the Sphygmograph : Being a Guide to its use in clinical Research.

      - London : Robert Hardwicke, 192 Picadilly, 1867, kl.8°, VI, (2), 83, (1) pp., 3 Taf., 13 Fig., orig. Leinenband. First Edition of the "Handbook of the Sphygmograph : Being a Guide to its use in clinical research. To which is appended a Lecture delivered at the Royal College of Physicians on the 29th of March 1867 on the Mode and Duration of the Contraction of Heart in Health and Disease". - - "The first account of the use of the sphygmograph in England was published in The Lancet during 1865. It was part of a report of the proceedings of a meeting in London and mentions that Dr Francis E. Anstie was the first English physician to use the sphygmograph, which was described as 'an exquisitely designed instrument. of precision and remarkable beauty'. It goes on to say that Dr Burdon-Sanderson was also using the device (Anon. 1865). On 17 February 1866, another report appeared in the same journal (Walton 1866) in which abnormal pulse recordings taken with Marey's instrument from the right radial artery were compared with the normal tracings from the left radial artery. The differences between the sphygmograms were attributed to an aneurysm of the right axillary artery. This appears to have been the first report of the diagnostic use of the device in England. Later, in March 1866, the British Medical Journal published an extensive paper in two parts by Balthazar W. Foster of Birmingham. Foster later published a monograph describing the use of Marey's sphygmograph in England. The conclusion of Foster's monograph contains a brief but interesting exchange of letters between Foster and The Lancet over who really introduced the device to England. As we have noted, Anstie appears to have been the first to use the device, although Sir John Burdon Sanderson may also have been using it at the same time. Anstie himself subsequently published several articles on the sphygmograph and the correspondence appeared in The Lancet on 26 May and 9 June 1866. - - In 1867 J. B. BURDON-SANDERSON (1828-1905) published several reports on the sphygmograph and a monograph entitled 'Handbook of the Sphygmograph' (Burdon-Sanderson 1867)." N.H.
