IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES.MR. RAMSEY SUBMITTED THE FOLLOWING MEMORIAL, &c. NORTHERN PACIFIC RAILROAD.

[Washington. ]. 1867 - 39pp. plus large color folding map. Modern maroon cloth, gilt maroon morocco label. Minor dust soiling in text. Map bright and clean. Overall very good. An application to Congress by the Northern Pacific Railroad, headed by Minnesota railroad magnate James J. Hill, for federal aid to support the Railroad's expansion to the West Coast. The petition reviews the railroad's original charter and includes an impressive color folding map, "Map of the Country from Lake Superior to the Pacific Ocean," which illustrates the railroad's route from Duluth to Seattle and Portland. This map was originally produced to accompany Edwin Johnson's report on the feasibility of the railroad. This is one of the finest maps of the region traversed to be issued up to this time, and was produced by Colton in New York, not by the government. Wheat devotes several pages to discussing it, noting that "the detail of such a map defies cataloging." Above the map appears an elevation chart for the same distance. A fine account of railroad expansion in the Northwest. Rare. Not on OCLC. MIDLAND NOTES 68- 164. WHEAT TRANSMISSISSIPPI 1169.

RECHERCHES GÉOLOGIQUES DANS LES PARTIES DE LA SAVOIE, DU PIÉMONT ET DE LA SUISSE VOISINES DU MONT BLANC. ? ATLAS ?

Paris et Genevé, Masson et fils, 1867Album In-folio grande Legatura editoriale in tutta tela color bruno; autore e titolo impressi in oro al piatto anteriore.

Parenti, Prime edizioni, p. 368.

        ALS signed John Bowring

1867.. Very good condition. One page hand written letter signed 'John Bowring', to a W. Dixon, possibly the English author and editor William Hepworth Dixon, referring to Bowring's friendship with Louis Philippe, the king of France, and General Dumouriez. The complete text: "My Dear Sir, You may perhaps not deem this (ornate) contribution to history which I enclose unacceptable. I was very intimate with L. P. having been introduced to him by the only man whom I remember to have had any real influence over him, (one) General Dumouriez." Bowring was an accomplished linguist, writer, translator and diplomat. Bowring served as the fourth governor of Hong Kong from 1854 to 1859, and became involved in several incidents, including the Arrow Incident and the attacks on Canton which precipitated the Second Opium War. Even though there were standing instructions from the home government to avoid armed conflict with China, Bowring waited only until naval forces that had been involved in the Crimean War were available, and then ordered British gunboats under Rear Admiral Sir Michael Seymour to "punish" Canton. Bowring and Seymour were commended for their actions by Lord Clarendon, the Foreign Secretary. The war served as a pretext for advancing British and foreign interests in China such as the loosening of trade restrictions and the continuation of the opium trade. Bowring was a prolific author, writing accounts of his missions, works on poetry, and political & economic treatises. In his 'Autobiographical Recollections', Bowring writes of Louis Philippe and Dumouriez: "I was then intimate with the Duke of Orleans, who was in disgrace at Court. He had been denied the privilege of sitting in the Chamber of Peers, no higher title than Serene Highness was conceded to him, and it was believed that he was the centre of a hundred conspiracies to overturn the government. It was supposed, as I had travelled much, and had had much intercourse with the liberals of Europe, that I was a secret agent, as I undoubtedly was a personal friend of Louis Philippe, to whom I had been originally introduced by General Dumouriez ..." Charles-Francois du Perier Dumouriez (1739 –1823) was a French general who distinguished himself in the French Revolution, but ultimately defected to the Austrians, having been defeated by them at Neerwinden in 1793, and having fallen under suspicion of the French Directory. He is said to have fled from France on the horse of the future King Louis Philippe.5 1/4 x 8in., cream paper, with 'Claremont, Exeter', the family estate's embossed stamp at top. Written and signed clearly in black ink, dated 20 May 1867.A bit ruffled at edges, closed short tear, old folds o/w very good.

A HISTORY OF THE ART OF PRINTING. From its invention to its Widespread Development in the Middle of the 16th Century. Preceded by a short account of the origin of the Alphabet and the successive methods of recording events and multiplying MS books before the invention of printing.

First Edition. Quaritch. 1867.. With 100 illustrations produced in photo-lithography by Day and Sons. Many of these plates are in beautiful colour and all are of title pages or pages of typography or woodcut In fact there are 105 plates (as listed) and 212 pages. Royal 4to (or folio). In the original decorated red cloth under an ancient black protective and opaque or sometime greasy thick dust jacket. It is thought this was how books were issued from the printers in those days, the black dj to be discarded by the bookseller.(we have had one or two other books from entirely different sources but from the same period to about 1910 with the same textured black cover. This surely indicates this is a primitive or 'incunable' dustjacket and as such tremendously rare. ) The binding is brilliant. The whole was bound gutta perche, which has given, so the book has been recased into its original binding with modern glue. Scarce. One of two prelims have a crease, else a Near Fine copy. Each issue 4pp., with one lithograph per issue. Folio. Contemporary half tan Mexican sheep over mottled boards, spine gilt. Some overall shelf wear, joints rubbed, text block of final volume loose in binding. Plate twelve in volume 1878 has dime-size hole caused by paper flaw; 1869 volume lacks plate 118 but has added lithographed titlepage; volume 1878 lacks No. 8, its plate, and plate 96, but has hors-series plate; 1871 volume lacks No. 5 and its plate. Instances of dampstaining, light foxing, a few plates wrinkled, contemporary ownership signatures on front free endpapers of first two volumes. Overall, a very good set. A wonderful and extensive run of this 19th century Mexican periodical, of great interest for its vast number of lithographic political cartoons. The lithographic plates, numbering over 500, in this run of LA ORQUESTA, all of which belong to the third series and most of which were executed by master draftsmen Constantino Escalante, Vicente Riva Palacio and Hesiquio Iriarte represent some of the most exquisite early specimens of Mexico's nationalistic print-making art, a tradition that began with illustrations in a handful of liberal periodicals such as LA ORQUESTA and later blossomed to influence and encompass such prolific talents as Jose Guadalupe Posada and Jose Clemente Orozco. Popular lithography in 19th century Mexico reached its zenith with the CARICATURAS, or political caricatures, such as those contained in LA ORQUESTA. The narrative style of the cartoons combined with biting political satire and the use of decidedly Mexican emblematic metaphors evoke the peculiar Mexican CARICATURA style. Although the lithographs reveal hints of French influence in matters of decorations, they reflect more the genesis of Mexico's own satiric genre in lithography. This view is supported by Joyce Waddell Bailey, an authority on Mexican graphic art: "Outside of [a few] circumstantial affinities to the tradition of French magazines of caricature, we find little influence of a specific nature in the prints. Rather, the Mexican lithographs show highly original themes, and styles vary from artist to artist and journal to journal. To a certain extent we can see here traces of how highly creative artists work. A new idea or image may act as a stimulus, but it is combined in the artist's own work with such agility and acuity that it becomes impossible to accurately delineate specific sources of influence" - Tyler (page 96). Indeed, Escalante and the staff of LA ORQUESTA attained an international reputation, and even attracted Europeans hoping to learn the art of satirical lithography in their Mexico City shop. Sabin called LA ORQUESTA the Mexican PUNCH, but the themes depicted remain fully Mexican. Each issue consists of four pages plus a single full-sheet lithographic plate, with a printed caption. Besides standing as influential examples of Mexican lithography, the plates are of much interest as documents of the French intervention period in Mexico, the reign of Emperor Maximilian, and the political turmoil of the period. "LA ORQUESTA, a periodical of political satire, established lithographic caricature as a field of its own through the excellent work of Constantino Escalante, virtual pillar of the publication until his untimely death in a railroad accident at Tlalpan in 1868" - Mathes. Manuel Toussaint, in his study of 19th century Mexican lithography, describes the political caricatures in LA ORQUESTA as "a terrible weapon at the command of caustic satire. Two colossal humorists debut here: Vicente Riva Palacio and Constantino Escalante. They did more with their pen and pencil than many a general has with an entire army. LA OREQUESTA reveals, nay lays bare, an entire era in Mexican history." This run also contains the very last image produced by Escalante before his death in 1868 (Vol. II, No. 30) with the following issue devoted almost entirely to him. LA ORQUESTA commenced publication in 1861 and was issued weekly through four series or EPOCAS before ceasing publication sometime in 1877. The UNION LIST OF SERIALS locates partial sets at twelve North American libraries. The style and content of LA ORQUESTA is a foundation for much of later Mexican art. Such influential graphic artists as Posada and Orozco drew directly on the images which appear here in shaping their styles, and thus LA ORQUESTA is seminal to modern Latin American art. A gold mine of Mexican lithographic art and caricature. PALAU 204579. SABIN 57650. Tyler, ed., POSADA'S MEXICO, pp.94-100 and passim. MATHES, MEXICO ON STONE, p.30.

Producing Electric Lights at Sea, &c. [British Patent] Number 261 (+) Electric Telegraphs. [British Patent] Number 3006.

London, Eyre and Spottiswoode, Published at the Great Seal Patent Office, 1867 & 1863. Lex 8vo. Both with the original printed blue front wrappers, unbound, with a bit of soiling to extremities. Internally a bit of discolouring along edges and minor chipping to extremities, otherwise fine. [Siemens:] 18, (2) pp + two large, folded lithographic plates; [Wilde:] 9 pp. + two large, folded lithographic plates.. The scarce original printed patents for the first two patented dynamo-electric machines, Wilde's being the very first such, and Siemens' not only being the second such, but also the very first electrical generator of practical importance. Both patents are of seminal importance to the widespread use of electricity in both private and industrial contexts. Together they paved the way for modern electric power technology."Siemens's invention of the self-excited generator made possible a "second industrial revolution" characterized by the use of electrical energy in transportation, lightning and especially factory production. Siemens's discovery replaced the inefficient steel magnets of the first generators with electromagnets, and allowed the harnessing of water or stream turbines to produce large amounts of electricity inexpensively. Paving the way for modern electric power technology, Werner [Siemens] obtained patent [...] and secured a major position for his firm in the age of electricity." (Feldenkirchen, Werner Von Siemens: Inventor and International Entrepreneur, p. 87).The first electric generators were developed in the early 1830ies by theoreticians such as Faraday, Anyos Jedlik and Hippolyte Pixii. None of those, however, achieved any practical significance and it was not until Henry Wilde, in the early 1860'ies developed and patented the dynamo-electric machine, or self-energising dynamo, that it received any attention outside the small circle of theoretical physicists. Wilde's dynamo replaced the permanent magnets of previous designs with electro-magnets and in so doing reached an enormous increase in power. The construction of the machine was considered nothing less than remarkable - not just because of its actual, practical use, but also due to Wilde's fondness of spectacular demonstrations, such as the ability of his machine to cause iron bars to melt, which he did not hesitate to show journalists, colleagues or anyone showing an interest in his invention. It was, however, not until the German brothers Ernest Werner and Charles William Siemens developed their "dynamo-electric machine" - and thereby coining the word "dynamo" - that the potential of the generator was fully exploited. "Siemens' outstanding contribution to scientific technology was his discovery of the dynamo principle, announced to the Berlin Academy of Sciences in January 1867. Having already introduced the double-T armature, the electromagnetic field, and the external load of an electrical generator in a single circuit, thereby avoiding the costly permanent magnets previously used in the field. Other inventors and scientists discovered the dynamo principle at about the same time; but Siemens foresaw the consequences of his "dynamo" for heavy-current, or power, uses and developed practical applications. His company pioneered in using electricity for streetcars and mine locomotives, in electrolysis, and in central generating stations." (DSB)The Siemens dynamo was in all respects an immense leap forward and as opposed to the Wilde dynamo it was marketable. It could produce a steady and stable current, did not demand to much maintenance and was easy to implement in a factory production which consequently resulted in a fierce competition to copy the Siemens dynamo: "The world's most efficient dynamo with respect to producing electric current was the one that E. Werner and C. William Siemens, brothers working in Germany and England, respectively had patented. [...] Menlo Park (Thomas Edison's township) obtained a copy of the Siemens dynamo patent, but they were utterly unable to figure out how the Germans put the thing together. As Edison wrote to Johnson, they "worked three days and nights on Siemens' patent to figure out how the devil he connected up his armature and we never succeeded in doing it"."         Autograph Letter, signed ("HW Beecher")

New York n.d [New York?], n.d. 8vo. 2 pp., on two panels (plus postscript) of a folded quarto lettersheet, in ink. Old folds, with mends to tears along center fold and horizontal folds in blank panel (not affecting text), but near very good, in linen folding cloth slipcase . An amusing letter from the highly popular and controversial minister, novelist and reformer, to his good friend - or, as recent scholarship would have it, his very intimate friend - Chloe Beach, wife of Moses Beach, owner of the NEW YORK SUN. Beecher writes in such a fashion as to imply clearly that he is soliciting a dinner invitation: "My Dear Mrs. Beach - Our larder is given out: - our tea used up - milk gone, bread scanty, sweetmeats passed away, and all of us are facing the probability of starvation tonight. Do you know of any place where we could get a loan of cold victuals? - or borrow some crackers, or even get a chance to come and eat a little? I would not trouble you but, you have the reputation of being charitable; and really, we are reduced to that condition of suffering that if you do not take us in, - why - we will go somewhere else. I am your friend bowed down with trouble. H.W. Beecher - P.S. We are willing to pay." It was through the Beach family, in 1867, that Beecher first connected with his ardent supporter, Samuel Clemens, and a case has been put forward (see Applegate, THE MOST FAMOUS MAN IN AMERICA: THE BIOGRAPHY OF HENRY WARD BEECHER, pp. 371-2) that in January of the same year Chloe Beach gave birth to a daughter by Henry W. Beecher. Accompanied by a carte de visite of Beecher, captioned in ink and pencil on recto and verso, and trimmed at the top corners. While ordinary Beecher letters are not uncommon, the present letter enjoys an out of the ordinary context
