Les fleurs animees. Par J.J. Grandville. Texte par Alph. Karr, Taxile Delord et le Cte. Foeulix.

Paris; Garnier Freres, [n.d., 1867] New edition. Contemporary red morocco over red cloth boards. Gilt spine, all edges gilt. . Two volumes, large octavo. Two hand-colored wood-engraved titles and fifty hand-colored wood-engraved plates, two uncolored plates. Decorative woodcut initials and tailpieces throughout. Binding extremities lightly rubbed, tear at head of spine of Vo. 2 neatly repaired. Some light foxing at beginning and end of each volume. A very good, clean set. Though the images in the book are of Grandville's time, his manner of proceeding is that of an artist of the modern movement, exploring the same subject through a sequence of slight but significant variations. Most of the plates show an elegant lady accompanied by respectful creatures, animals and insects, even fish and reptiles. As the series nears its end there are more elaborate scenes of flower-ladies in groups. A little world is created, governed by its own laws, which was full of significance to Grandville and hence becomes so to the reader as well. his first biographer wrote in the preface to Les étoiles (pp. viii-ix): 'The Fleurs animées are the very thought of Grandville; they were his favorite work, the work into the execution of which he put all that was in him of poetic and gracious originality, of dexterity of mind and observation, of that prodigious perspicacity which made him divine affinities hitherto unperceived by anyone and discover new worlds'" (Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book, 198.

        LETTER SIGNED (LS)

Rochester, 4 Nov. 1867. Letter. Normal creases from folding; slight foxing. Near Fine. A letter of @90 words to Frederick W. Gunster on a 5" x 8" sheet of lined paper accomplished in another hand but SIGNED in full by Douglass. In full: "Your favor of the 30th of Oct. has reached me. Absence from home is my apology for delay. You give me the choice of any evening between the 20th and 30th of Nov. inclusive. The best I can do is to give you Monday evening the 25th of Nov. Regarding the limits set for me as final I have placed Scranton on my list for that evening." Throughout 1867 Douglass canvassed New England, the Midwest, and the mid-Atlantic states in a grueling campaign to muster white voter support against the Andrew Johnson administration's sluggish attempts at black enfranchisement. On the 25th and 26th of November, Douglass was Gunster's guest, reportedly telling Scrantonites in no uncertain terms that there was little advantage in emancipation under Andrew Johnson. Whether black Americans would continue to bear the inherent burdens of citizenship without impartial suffrage would be decided at the polls the following November when Ulysses S. Grant, carrying 26 states to opponent Horatio Seymour's 8, privately sighed, "I am afraid I am elected.

Meglinger. Thin stamp on title "Nachdruck nach Original v. A. Eglin ...". Bucher, 1889, Quer in-4to, 3 ll., title, table of contents, history of the Dance of Death (in german, french, and english) + 45 plates with legends in the German language, foxing in the preliminaries, very rare foxing in the plates, brown cloth with blind and black tooling, frontcover with gilt title, red edges. .

Quer- 4°, 8 Bl., 1 Front., Titeltaf. u. 56 lithogr. Abb., HLwd., Min berieben, etwas angeschmutzt, min. stockfleckig, Text dt., franz., engl.
