L'Appendix de 28 pages de Janos, publié en 1831 à la suite d'une édition des travaux de mathématiques de son père ("Tentamen juventutem studiosam in elementa matheseos purae [.] introducendi"), passa totalement inaperçu jusqu'au milieu des années 1860. La publication de la correspondance de Gauss et Schumacher ainsi que de la seconde édition des Elemente der Mathematik de Richard Baltzer, en Allemagne ; les travaux de Bataglini en Italie, et, en France, les efforts de vulgarisation de Jules Hoüel, le premier traducteur de Bolyai, permirent à la géométrie non-euclidienne de prendre toute la place qui devait être la sienne au sein des Mathématiques. Jules Hoüel joua un rôle de premier ordre : il traduisit, en 1866, le livre de Lobachevski (Etudes géométriques sur la théorie des parallèles) et, en 1867, l'Appendix de Bolyai. Le texte paru tout d'abord dans les Mémoires de la Société des Sciences physique et naturelles de Bordeaux à la toute fin de l'année 1867 [ici offert], puis sous la forme d'un tiré-à-part l'année suivante. La traduction d'Hoüel est introduite par une "Note du traducteur" et une "Notice sur la vie et les travaux des deux mathématiciens hongrois Wolfgang et Johann Bolyai de Bolya" par Franz Schmidt.         Lettre de M. L. Pasteur à M. H. Marès

      1867 - de 39 et (1) pages Montpellier, Pierre Grollier, 1867, in-8, de 39 et (1) pages, exemplaire broché, Unique exemplaire, destiné à l'imprimeur, portant un long ajout manuscrit autographe de Marie Pasteur et des notes au crayon de papier de Pasteur lui-même. En mars 1867, Pasteur publie une "Lettre à M. H. Marès" afin de rendre compte publiquement de ces dernières découvertes sur la maladies des vers à soie. Henri Marès, ingénieur agronome, ami de Pasteur, s'intéressa en particulier à la viticulture et à la l'hygiène agricole. Alors que depuis 1865, les recherches que Pasteur mène à Pont-Gisquet ne montrent pas de résultats concluants bien qu'il ait prouvé le caractère contagieux et héréditaire des éléments pathogènes, durant les premiers mois de l'année 1867, grâce à des observations effectuées sur "des produits" venus "directement du Japon", ses nouvelles expérimentations vont lui permettre de comprendre la distinction entre pébrine et flacherie. Cette intense période de recherche, de janvier à mai 1867, est marquée par de nombreuses publications dans des périodiques nationaux et locaux (il s'agit de redonner confiance à une production de soie localisée). Pasteur publie, en février, dans le Messager agricole du Midi une "Nouvelle note sur la maladies des vers à soie", toujours en février dans le même périodique une "Instruction pratique pour produire de bonnes graines de vers à soie", en mars la "Lettre à M. H. Marès", en avril une "Lettre à M. Dumas", et au début du mois de mai il republie, augmentée d'un second post-scriptum, la "Lettre à M. H. Marès". Le rythme de ces publications à répétition est marqué par un double principe : celui de l'activité de la recherche et des soubresauts liés à l'inattendue des découvertes, un principe de diversification des lieux de publications. Les deux éditions de la Lettre à Marès sont marquées par cette transformation ambivalente, et la présente copie enrichie d'ajouts manuscrits fait le lien entre les deux. En effet, de la main de Marie Pasteur, qui travaille en étroite collaboration avec son mari dans leur demeure de Pont-Gisquet, sont ajoutées une précision au titre, une longue note manuscrite finale qui forme un ajout autonome, et deux corrections (aux pages 19 et 34). Pasteur, au crayon de papier, ajoute, avant le texte finale de sa femme, "2e Post-scriptum à lettre s/ les V. à S.", et après "(Pont-Gisquet 20 avril 1867)". En confrontant la seconde édition de la Lettre, publiée dans le Messager Agricole du 5 mai, on retrouve une des deux corrections manuscrites, mais surtout, la totalité du second post-scriptum qui parait ici pour la première fois. Ainsi, notre exemplaire, qui fut envoyé à l'imprimeur Montpelliérain du "Messager" à la fin du mois d'avril 1867, est la trace précoce de cette intime filiation entre Pasteur et sa femme autour de sa débordante activité scientifique. Planchon's ORIGINAL WORKS on the FRENCH PHYLLOXERA VINEYARD PLAGUE, plus a SIGNED WORK by J.-E. Planchon's brother, GUSTAVE PLANCHON. THREE PAGE HANDWRITTEN LETTER by JULES EMILE PLANCHON to DR. VINCENT ANTOINE SIGNORET (addressed to "Monsieur", but clearly to Dr. Vincent Antoine Signoret, identified by the other included items that are described below). The letter is on a single-fold sheet, making 4-pages. Handwritten on the front page and the two inside pages, the back page is blank. Signed by J. E. Planchon at the end of his letter, with his current positions as Professor and Director of Pharmaceuticals in Montpellier, written beneath his signature. AN IMPORTANT LETTER - Written during the time J-E PLANCHON was investigating the cause of the destruction of grape vines throughout Europe. Much of the letter discusses botany, with botanical words such as: Chènes, Coccus, Gramutii, Pulvinatus, Chermes, Cultivés, Coquilles, Èspece, etc. Much of the letter has to do with scale insects, a specialty of the letter's recipient, DR. V.-A. SIGNORET. The letter is dated: Montpellier le 10 Decembre 1867. It appears that the letter was originally sent to GUSTAVE PLANCHON, the brother of JULES EMILE PLANCHON, in response to a booklet written by Gustave Planchon titled: LE KERMES DU CHENE - AUX POINTS DE VUE ZOOLOGIQUE, COMMERCIAL & PHARMACEUTIQUE. But the letter by Signoret to Gustave Planchon was either intercepted by or forwarded to Jules Emile Planchon, who read it and responded to it. THE LETTER IN THIS AUCTION IS THE LETTER BY J.-E. PLANCHON to SIGNORET, it DOES NOT include the assumed letter written by Signoret to Gustave. However... GUSTAVE'S BOOKLET IS INCLUDED. The booklet has printed blue wrappers, sewn binding, 5.25x8.25", 47 pages. Published in PARIS and MONTPELLIER, 1864. The booklet is SIGNED and INSCRIBED by GUSTAVE PLANCHON at the top of the front cover: "hommage de l'auteur / Gustave Planchon (signed)". The booklet has the ink-stamped signature of SIGNORET on the half-title page, again on page 7 (the beginning of the text), and a third time on the blank bottom of the last page (page 47). Handwritten on the front cover, presumably by SIGNORET is "ecrit à M. Planchon le 21 Nbre 1867". This corresponds nicely with the December 10, 1867, date on the letter by E.-J. Planchon to (presumably) Signoret. The booklet also has a handwritten, single-line, relevant note on page 23, presumably by Signoret. ALSO INCLUDED are TWO BOOKLETS on GRAPE VINES and VINEYARDS by J. E. PLANCHON. (1) An 8 page booklet titled "LA PHTHIRIOSE ou PEDICULAIRE DE LA VIGNE CHEZ LES ANCIENS - Et Les Cochenilles de la VIGNE Chez Les Modernes". A separately bound extract from the Societe des Agriculteurs de France, 1870. (2) A 16 page booklet titled "NOTES ENTOMOLOGIQUES SUR LE PHYLLOXERA VASTATRIX". A separately bound extract from the Societe des Agriculteurs de France, 1869. IN SUMMARY, THIS AUCTION IS FOR: (1) A 3-PAGE HANDWRITTEN LETTER BY JULES-EMILE PLANCHON. (2) A 42 PAGE Booklet by GUSTAVE PLANCHON, SIGNED by GUSTAVE PLANCHON, and owned by VINCENT ANTOINE SIGNORET, with his stamped Signature and Handwritten notes. (3) AN 8 PAGE Booklet by JULES EMILE PLANCHON on VINES both Ancient and Modern. (4) A 16 PAGE Booklet by JULES EMILE PLANCHON on PHYLLOXERA, the Plague that was destroying the Vineyards of France and Europe. CONDITION: The letter is solid, there are some stains, spots, creases and edge toning but the writing is clear throughout. The letter has a number of folds from where it was folded, presumably to fit into a small envelope. The booklet by Gustave Planchon has a couple of creases and spots, but remains solid and nice. The 8 page booklet has some creases but remains sturdy, bright and clean. The 16 page booklet is soiled, has edge wear, creases, and tears, has some foxing, and has some early previous owner's margin marks and text underlining. Good

Map loose but present, with a few minor tissue repairs. Very good. A discourse by Sumner on the history and state of Russian America, which had just become the American territory of Alaska. Secretary of State William Seward, the architect of the purchase, praised Sumner's speech for accurately representing Alaska's great potential. The map, which is usually lacking, is of the greatest importance, being the first published version of the cession area, a region amounting to one-third of the lower forty-eight states. It is widely believed to be the first map to use the name "Alaska.

        New Testament - Arabic - 1867 - Rare

      Hardcover. Good. One Rare Arabic Language Bible given as gift to the Passengers of the SS Quaker City in September 1867. The 1867 SS Quaker City Excursion to the Holy Land was made famous by Mark Twain who filed travel reports for various publications and later (1869) published the book 'The Innocents Abroad'. In September 1867 the Quaker City with it's 71 passengers arrived in Beirut, Syria and a visit to the American Mission Press had been scheduled. At the occasion of the visit each of the passengers (not all passengers attended) received a Mission Press Printing of the Arabic New Testament. The translation of had been completed in 1860 (New Testament) and 1865 (Old Testament) by Cornelius Van Allen Van Dycke. Each Bible had an English Language dedication page pasted in the rear of the book (Arabic reading starts from the rear) that read: Presented by the American Mission to Name of passenger (J.H. Bond) Handwritten in Arabic Passenger by the steamer Quaker City Berut, Syria, September 1867 handwritten in ink on lower left: Name: J.H. Bond According to the Mark Twain Project 4 of the approximately books have been known to survive.

      Dieterich, Göttingen 1867 - First edition, the very rare offprint issue, of Riemann’s important paper on minimal surfaces (i.e. surfaces of least area for a given boundary). "What his work lacks in quantity is more than compensated for by its superb quality. One of the most profound and imaginative mathematicians of all time " (DSB). The research first published in this paper was carried out in 1860-61; this delay in publication cost Riemann the credit for several fundamental discoveries contained in the present work. Most importantly, Riemann was the first to understand the intimate relationship between minimal surfaces and complex analytic functions, later credited to Karl Weierstrass (1815-97). Indeed, the present paper is a natural outgrowth of Riemann’s landmark doctoral dissertation on complex function theory (1851). Riemann also anticipated Hermann Amandus Schwarz (1843-1921) in the construction of a new family of minimal surfaces which provided the first solution to a non-trivial case of Plateau’s problem, the problem of finding a minimal surface having a given curve as its boundary (this problem was not solved in full generality until 1930). "The problem involves geometry and physics, and its treatment uses real and complex analysis. In other words, problem and treatment involve almost all of Riemann’s work areas" (Laugwitz, p. 142). ABPC/RBH list only a single copy.The French mathematician Ossian Bonnet showed in 1860 a close connection between minimal surfaces and conformal mappings (transformations of one surface to another that preserve angles). Such mappings had been a major theme in Riemann’s great work of 1851 on complex function theory (Grundlagen für eine allgemeine Theorie der Functionen einer veränderlichen complexen Grösse), "but neither [Bonnet] nor Minding before him took the step of thinking in terms of complex analytic maps, which suggests that even in 1860 such a connection might not have been generally appreciated. Instead, the first to put the picture together were the two leading complex analysts of the day, Riemann and Weierstrass. They worked independently. Riemann’s account was entrusted by him to [Karl] Hattendorff for editing in April 1866, but apparently dates from 1860 to 1861. The original manuscript consists entirely of formulae, and Hattendorff supplied a text; the result was published in 1867 as [the present work]. Weierstrass’s account was first given in a lecture at the Berlin Academy in 1866" (Bottazzini & Gray, p. 540). Shortly after handing his manuscript to Hattendorff, Riemann fled Göttingen when the armies of Hanover and Prussia clashed there at the start of the Austro-Prussian War. He was in any case probably too ill to work on the manuscript himself, having contracted tuberculosis in 1862. He died in Italy on 20 July, 1866. "The much harder problem is to find a minimal surface that spans a given contour; this problem is called the Plateau problem after the blind Belgian physicist Joseph Plateau who, in the 1840s and 1850s had drawn attention to the fact that a soap film spanning a wire frame will take up the shape of a minimal surface. The contours can have quite arbitrary shapes. The disparity between mathematicians’ ability to solve the Plateau problem and the behaviour of soap films was a potent challenge, but even Riemann found the task of finding the right surface for a given boundary curve daunting. He was able to give explicit solutions only for simple boundaries: two skew lines in space (when the surface is a piece of a helicoid); two intersecting lines and a third lying in a plane parallel to the first two, three skew lines (which led to a generalization of the Riemann P-function); the space quadrilateral (later studied by Schwarz), and two circles in two parallel planes" (ibid., p. 542). The most interesting case, that of a space quadrilateral, and with it the first non-trivial solution of Plateau’s problem, is usually credited to Schwarz (see, for example, Rassias, p. 153). Plain endpapers, paper library label to front pastedown. Linen reinforcement to gutters. Bound without half titles. Internally clean. No additional library stamps or markings, the Southern Counties crew obviously belonging to the less invasive school of Victorian librarianship. A handsome set of a novel listed in Hubin's Crime Fiction bibliography. #All Le Fanu is cool, the end. Even before M.R. James raised him from semi obscurity and absolute masterpieces like "Uncle Silas" and "In A Glass Darkly" took their rightful place up there on the giant invisible list of all the things that are awesome and therefore a more than adequate reason for living. Other things on that list include The British Museum, gin, Mexican food and kissing. Your mileage may vary. Meticulous, smooth storytelling and an incredible eye for detail are the hallmarks of a Le Fanu tale, this one being no exception, although it lacks the indirect horror of many of his other works it eschews a supernatural element in favour of a complex interweaving of character storylines. It's very much a piece that stands alongside Wilkie Collins' output of sensationalist tales in which the protagonists navigate a kind of moral labyrinth throughout the story. I know the feeling. An attractive first edition.

      [Washington, 1867. Modern maroon cloth, gilt maroon morocco label. Minor dust soiling in text. Map bright and clean. Overall very good. An application to Congress by the Northern Pacific Railroad, headed by Minnesota railroad magnate James J. Hill, for federal aid to support the Railroad's expansion to the West Coast. The petition reviews the railroad's original charter and includes an impressive color folding map, "Map of the Country from Lake Superior to the Pacific Ocean," which illustrates the railroad's route from Duluth to Seattle and Portland. This map was originally produced to accompany Edwin Johnson's report on the feasibility of the railroad. This is one of the finest maps of the region traversed to be issued up to this time, and was produced by Colton in New York, not by the government. Wheat devotes several pages to discussing it, noting that "the detail of such a map defies cataloging." Above the map appears an elevation chart for the same distance. A fine account of railroad expansion in the Northwest. Rare. Not on OCLC.

It is attributed to Shibata Hoshu [Hohshuu], by the late professor Dr. Richard Lane, [see below] after the original album he attributes to Taigado. * THE SOCIAL MILEAU & BACKGROUND OF THE KYOTO IMPERIAL COURT: THE ROLE OF SEXUAL INTRIGUE: . This work illustrates the sexual activities of the Emperor of Japan, his court, courtiers & concubines. Several references to him or his Imperial court are found in the text. Where any reference implicating the Emperor or his immediate courtiers are concerned, a blank box is found in the text, to protect the Name of the Emperor or his paramours. It was disrespectful to name the Emperor and associate him with licentious activities, nevertheless this work was done to give pictorial illustration to the activities of the Imperial court. Obviously, the artist was not allowed to use the Emperor's name, but based on the dates of the artist's active period, the record shows Emperors Sakuramachi [1736-1747] Gembun period; Momozono [1748-1762] Meiwa period; and Go-Sakurmachi [1763-1770] Meiwa period, as the three likely subjects of this illustrated sexual frolic. The exact Emperor's name will always remain a mystery. . THE EMPEROR'S SELECTION OF NEW CONCUBINES: Annual selection of new concubines by The Emperor was conducted by selecting the most beautiful girls from each province. These stunning young girls were groomed, educated in the ways of serving the Emperor and lived in the Imperial Palace. As they came of age they were presented to the Emperor. Any that caught his fancy were selected for his personal use and attendance. Often these young girls had interest in other court men but had a primary duty to serve the Emperor. . The Emperor had his choice of any woman who lived in the Palace, including those married to his courtiers. It was common for married women to be selected by the Emperor for his personal sexual service. These women and their husbands advanced in stature and status within the Imperial Household social structure and were granted fiefdoms, land, rice, treasure and were appointed Governor of provinces and had their own Hatamoto [supporters] as well as a large stable of Samurai protectors. Thus having one's wife selected by the Emperor was a great honor and an opportunity for success. The pleased husband was happy at his social advance and gave homage and thanks to the source of his worldly success, i.e. his wife's vagina ! See below for more about this vis-à-vis album illustration number 15 below also Lane's notes on the same illustration #451 found in his book. . There is ample Japanese [Kambun] text surrounding each painting, indicating the people involved in licentious affairs. There were a lot of palace intrigue and romantic affairs were common. Infidelity, sexual offerings for personal favoritism by women and men was common to the time. *** THE ARTIST: SHIBATA HOSHU [a.k.a. Hohshuu]: THE ARTIST OF THIS WORK: The artist of this work is attributed to SHIBATA Hoshu [1840-1890] by Dr. Richard Lane on p.277 of his work cited below, and illustrated as plate #451 in his book. . Lane further attributes the artistic work to being "Shibata, "...a Nagoya Bunjin-ga artist. "It is also noteworthy that Lane cited this as a "woodblock-printed album..." while ours is a painted album. The plate & text he illustrates is identical to the one found in this album. . We acquired an exact 3 volume woodblock printed title from Dr. Lane while visiting him in Japan, in 1978. That item was 9 x 11.5 cm. in size. At that time, sadly, we did not record the Kanji for Hohshuu's name. . A PAINTING DONE IN "RESPECT" AND ADMIRATION FOR TAIGADO: In respect and admiration of Taigado, the original artist of this work, Hohshuu did his rendition of the album in his own Nanga style. It was not uncommon for Japanese & Chinese artists to give "homage" to their teachers or to other artists by making their own stylistic copy of the earlier master's work. There was no intent to "fake" or "copy" for financial gain, but merely in the ancient Confucian way to show "respect" and "admiration" for one's teacher by making a copy. In this case, due to the erotic nature of the subject, Imperial licentiousness was indeed an uncommon subject and seldom addressed by any Japanese artist. Thus the rarity of subject and the very charming painting technique in caricature to show the Imperial Palace people as human as any other class of people ! . Lane's illustration #451 is the exact same as this album's #15. The text found on Lane's example is again the exact as found in this album, except the first 3 Kanji characters are omitted in favor of a blank box. It is therefore with great certainty, that we can state with factual supporting evidence that our album is the one in the same as cited by Lane. . Several other texts found on other paintings in this album have the same blank boxes where reference to the Emperor is omitted in respect for His Highness. It was considered a crime under the Shogunate to mention the Emperor's name, or cite him in any books, and especially erotica escapades of an Emperor ! This was punishable by death in Japan at that time. ** THE ORIGINAL ARTIST: TAIGADO [a.k.a. TAIDO] [1723-1776]: Was a famous Nanga painter, calligrapher, born and lived in Kyoto. In 1742, he took the name Taiga, in about 1750 he studied Chinese style painting in Edo and was familiar with the famous Chinese treatise on painting: THE MUSTARD-SEED GARDEN, the manual for all Bunjin-ga artists. He was also a student of Zen and calligraphy, a disciple of Hakuin, a collaborator of Buson. He used over 113 "Go" [studio names] which can be found in the supplement of Tanaka Ichimatsu's IKENO TAIGA GAFU. Known for his gay and witty paintings, this current example is one of his best and most enjoyable works. Although this title is not listed in Mitchell. This is NOT surprising, being a manuscript, as Mitchell only listed woodblock printed works. Mitchell does not list "prohibited" or 'banned' books, but he does refer to Taigado, see below for details. * BANNED WORKS ARE NEVER SIGNED BY THE ARTIST: This superb work is not signed. It was common at the time for artists not to sign "Banned" or "Prohibited" items of an erotic or political nature. Hohshuu [flourished 1840-1890] is the "Go" [studio name] of a Ukiyo-e painter, and skilled Bijin-ga artist. He exhibits a charming and unique humor similar to that found in the Nanga, with good Kano & Nanga painting styles. Although we scanned each of the Roberts choices none seemed to fit what Lane has assigned to this artistic work. For sure this was done by an admirer of Taigado, or one of his better students. We therefore follow colleague Lane's lead and attribute this work to Hohshuu [Hoshu]. * ****** DESCRIPTION OF 37 FINE COLOR PAINTINGS: No. 1: Shows a couple getting ready to make love. . His penis has . entered her vagina, they both look on eagerly and he . smiles. *** A TRIBUTE TO TAIKAGADO: This stunning and superbly drawn and executed work is very likely a tribute peace to Taikagado by Shibata Hoshu, one of his star students & great admirer. *** "BANNED" or "PROHIBITED" BOOKS: Shun Pon, Haru Bon: Due to the "banned" nature of this kind of erotic book, it is not surprising that it lacks date, artist's name, or even artist's "Go" [assumed studio/artist's name, and no seal or Hanko anywhere. . It is well-known that during the Tokugawa period [1603-1868] erotic paintings, prints and books were "BANNED" and "PROHIBITED" by decree of the Shogun. . One of the influencing factors was that during this period some Shoguns were changing their views and being influenced by Christians who entered Japan at this time. The Shogun did not want foreigners, and Jesuit missionaries to think that Japan was a crass and base nation. . Naturally foreigners soon learned that prostitution was permitted and rampant throughout Japan, so this strange logic from the Shogun never had much affect on the Christians and surely not on the Japanese. Nevertheless, the publication of every book, poster and print had to have the "censor's" seal on it to be a legitimate item. Any item without this seal was subject to seizure and forfeiture, the artist, publisher or seller was imprisoned. Mostly this was a 'gesture' sentence of a few days or a few weeks. There was of course no Shogun control over hand-drawn or painted works that were by and large a 'one of a kind' item. This item surely falls into that category, but specifically erotic books, prints, paintings were officially banned by the Shogunate. *** * EXCELLENT PROVENANCE: This item was acquired directly from Dr. Richard Lane by us in 1978. At that time he cited to us the known bibliographic details, and informed me that a very similar image and title would be listed & illustrated in his then forthcoming and major reference book on Japanese woodblock prints, printed books and paintings: IMAGES OF THE FLOATING WORLD. . Although this is a variant to the one cited, illustration number 15 is remarkably close to the image found on p.451 of his book. The one illustrated and cited in his book was retained by Lane. Lane stated that Hohshuu did several variants to the one he illustrated in his book. Lane liked this kind of genre and had collected several variants, most of which he sold to us. Other variants we bought were in the form of miniature scrolls, woodblock printed books of the same subject and genre during that visit. . After some 36 years, of course the all have been sold, except this one. We have reserved this one for our later years ! This is the last of those items we purchased from him. It is now being offered for sale for the first time. *** RARITY: Books of this Genre style and subject matter are exceptionally rare and seldom found on the market for sale. It was our good fortune to have known and visited Dr. Lane many times in Kyoto and buy from him some of the most stunning of all Japanese erotica, his specialty. *** CONDITION: The work is beautifully bound in the original brown brocade silk cloth, with blank silver title slip. Seven of the eight corners are a trifle bit wear, else clean and solid. The actual paintings are all quite clean, there is no worming or other detractions. Each paper painting is beautifully mounted using silver paper borders. Each is solid and very clean, with a touch of oxidizing patina due to the age of the paper. There is evidence of a something gently removed from the inside front end paper leaving a small amount of red color behind, we assume this may have been a private ownership bookplate. The end papers are 'gold-flecked paper' and are otherwise very clean. Page edges on three sides are lovely solid silver gilt with the usual oxidation due to age. . All in all a very clean lovely example of a very RARE erotic album. ** CONTAINED IN A CUSTOM-MADE JAPANESE CEDAR WOODEN BOX: This work is contained in a very nice custom two-part Japanese wooden box. The bottom lacks two of the four lips, but the top seals down correctly, protecting this lovely work any bug intrusion. Otherwise a few old worm holes, nicks, bumps, scratches to the exterior of the box as expected. . The box has protected this charming work from any attrition and has done its job. * COLOR SCANS: Please view the color scans posted to our website. *** BIBLIOGRAPHY: Richard LANE: IMAGES OF THE FLOATING WORLD, p.277, photo # 451 shows Hoshu as the artist, original attributed to Taigado. Sadly, Dr. Lane did not put the actual Kanji for Hohshuu in his work, so we are still left without the exact characters for his name. . He also attributes his 'studio' name as Arina, his true name was Kin, other studio names used were Taisei, Kaemon, later as Shuhei, Kasho and others ! Very rare: notes on the Aboriginal dialects of Australia, compiled in the form of comparative tables. Most of the tribes noticed here are Victorian, but there are also notes on the languages of South Australia, Tasmania and New Caledonia.With a preface by Sir Remond Barry, commenting on his hopes that the impending Intercolonial Exhibition will encourage the collection of Aboriginal implements: he is particularly taken with the idea of collecting what he quaintly refers to as 'authentic accounts upon which reliance may be placed touching their ideas with regard to the Supreme Being.' The text also includes Sir John Herschel's suggestions regarding a standard orthography when 'compiling vocabularies from the mouths of natives', derived from the Admiralty Manual.Barry was the President of Commissioners for the Intercolonial Exhibition, and while he worked tirelessly to organise and promote the event, he mysteriously withdrew from office before the formal opening. Perhaps this withdrawal helps explain why the present work does not appear to have been widely distributed at the time: indeed, a printer's gap in Barry's text strongly suggests that this was in some sense a preliminary issue, and the work does not appear to have been formally published. Very Good set of this classic. J. J. Grandville. Two quarto (7" x 10-3/4") volumes bound in half green calf leather with gilt lettering and green marbled boards. Illustrated with 52 superb anthropomorphic hand-colored plates (including 2 title pages), 2 black-and-white plates, and numerous wood-engravings in the text, all after J. J. Grandville. Text by several contributors. Grandville was a caricaturist best known for presenting animals and flowers in human form and using them to satirize the French social and political milieu of his period.

Après un séjour en Angleterre, il débarque à New-York le 28 septembre 1865, six mois à peine après l'assassinat d'Abraham Lincoln qu'il admirait beaucoup. Installé comme médecin dans la 12e rue, il a peu de clients et fréquente surtout les journalistes et les artistes. Après avoir évoqué un séjour dans le Massachussetts, il veut vider leur querelle : « Que diable allez-vous vous imaginer de plaindre des Maximilien et des Charlotte. Mon Dieu, oui, je le sais, ces gens-là sont toujours charmants. Cela était convenu d'avance : il y a cinq ou six mille ans qu'ils sont comme cela. So wäre die Institution der Kirche in einem christlichen Kulturstaat aufgegangen. Dieser Kulturstaat stellte sich nach Rothe als \"absolute Theokratie\" dar, aus der das \"vollendete Reich Gottes\" entstehen würde. Dieser Gedankengang ging aus Rothes spekulativer Theologie hervor, die an kein Dogma gebunden und die von der herrschenden Kirchenlehre abgewichen war. Nach dem Beispiel Friedrich Schleiermachers unterteilte Rothe die Theologie in die spekulative, historische und praktische Theologie. Die von Rothe entfaltete spekulative Theologie ließ sich von dem Inhalt der Bibel und einem frommen Gottesgefühl leiten. Da dieses fromme Gottesgefühl aber in den christlichen Kirchen unterschiedlich stark ausgeprägt war, konnte diese spekulative Theologie nach der inhaltlich protestantisch bestimmten Frömmigkeit nur in einem protestantischen Kulturstaat Anwendung finden. Die Bedeutung der Theologie Rothes besteht heute darin, dass das \"Gottesgefühl der Frömmigkeit\" in den Gottesgedanken der gesamten spekulativen Theologie überführt wurde.Richard Rothe war im 19. Jahrhundert eine wichtige Person des liberalen Protestantismus.         NARRATIVE OF CAPTURE, PRISON LIFE AND ESCAPE DURING THE WAR OF THE REBELLION IN 1864

      [San Francisco?], 1867. Original printed wrappers with paper backstrip. Text block sewn, but not attached to wrappers, likely as issued. Small chip, minor toning to wrappers. With a couple small emendations, likely authorial. Very good. An exceptionally rare personal memoir of Lieut. Morris Foote's experiences in the Civil War, printed on the regimental press of his unit, probably while the 9th Infantry was stationed in San Francisco. Foote was promoted to lieutenant in 1867, and since he is noted as such on the front wrapper, the publication must date between then and 1883, when he was promoted. Foote served in Alaska from 1867 to 1871, and the regiment was serving under much more rugged conditions in the Dakotas from 1872, the most likely point of publication is circa 1867 in San Francisco. The handsome production and superior typography would also support the argument for garrison and not field printing. Supposedly twelve copies were printed, but only two copies are located in OCLC, at New-York Historical and the New York State Historical Association. The original manuscript for the work resides at the Huntington Library. The first copy we have ever seen for sale, this was found with other Foote material and is likely his personal copy. In a well-written narrative Foote describes his experiences as a member of a New York volunteer regiment during the Civil War. With other units, his regiment occupied the town of Plymouth, North Carolina, at the mouth of the Roanoke River, in the winter of 1863-64. In April 1864, Confederate forces stormed the position, and Foote and others were made prisoner and taken briefly to Libby Prison in Richmond, but were quickly transferred southward, eventually to Charleston, South Carolina and then Columbia, South Carolina. Foote escaped with another officer from the poorly guarded prison there in late November 1864. He describes their journey to the Carolina coast in vivid detail. The two fugitives were aided at every turn by slaves, and after many adventures and hardships, reached the coast several weeks later and were picked up by the U.S. Navy. A remarkable narrative.

First edition of a rare pocket map of Mississippi. This large Colton pocket map depicts the entire state, divided into 60 counties and with a great amount of detail, showing towns, roads, railroads, waterways etc. The lovely colouring and border are typical of Colton maps of the period. The map is scarce. Copyrighted 1866, four editions are known (1867, 1869, 1873, and 1883). OCLC records only one extant copy of this first edition, and we could find no records for a copy at auction. Not in Phillips, A List of Maps of America , or Rumsey.

(About 6 plates shaved into the imprint area, and 10 plates with small tears, two plates with small sections chipped, some tears and repairs to the text leaves). Later brown half morocco by Whitman Bennett of New York, the flat spines titled in gilt A rare substantial fragment from this important record of the decorative tastes of the mid 19th century. Only two substantial runs of this fascinating periodical are listed as having sold at auction in the last thirty five years: most recently the McCarty-Cooper copy (covering a period between March 1850 and December 1867) was sold in New York in January 1992; and two years earlier an ex-library copy dated between January 1864 to December 1871 sold in New England. There are three aspects to this journal that are important: firstly, it offers a snap-shot of the taste of the time; secondly it gives quite detailed instructions on painting methods that have all but disappeared: there are only a few specialist decorative painters left who are capable of executing the designs and finishes described here, but armed with the instructions given here, these beautiful designs on a page could be 'brought to life' as part of an actual design scheme once again. Thirdly, this work offers a view of the state of French colour-printing: the quality of the images is perhaps surprising given the ephemeral nature of this publication, but the plates are of the highest quality. Some of the faux wood and marble panels are astonishing, as is the case with the best of the decorative tableaux. These are a mixture of what appear to be original designs by Petit, Bisaux or Pierre Chabat, or carefully copied from earlier eras - particularly the 18th century. Unsurprisingly, the earlier designs are almost exclusively French in origin. The Journal-Manuel was evidently well-regarded by the trade (architects as well as the craftsmen who executed the designs) as OCLC record that it was published for over fifty years, between 1850 and 1906.

'Storrie exhibits a keen sense of satire not only with regard to conventional tales whose perclivities are mercilessly ridiculed but also with regard to colonial society itself' (Depasquale: A Critical History of South Australian Literature, 1836-1930). Printed from the original plate as published by Auguste Delatre in ?'Gazette de Beaux Arts?', Paris 1867. With the title and publisher now etched onto the plate. The sheet is cut at a slight angle with the Delatre text just touching the margins; there is a small spot within the image which is a tiny stain; verso has overall browning and there is an old mount stain visible. Image size: 176x213mm; Sheet size 180 x 268mm The plate was made circa 1810. It appears that this is the first published edition of the plate, 1864. Only a few proofs were ever printed for his own use. Goya did not publish all of his work, occasionally leaving etched plates aside. The plate was used for a later printing/publication.

A very rare proof before letters of this spectacular image of two early steam propeller ships leaving harbor off the eastern coast of the United States. The Cuba and the Liberty were in the late 1860s mail ships sailing between Baltimore and Havana, with stops along the way including Key West. The Cuba was built in Fairhaven and launched in 1863, serving as a transport for the U. S. Navy. After the war, she became a mail ship in tandem with the Liberty. The Liberty was built in Philadelphia in 1864. A Descriptive Catalogue of the Marine Collection to be found at India House (New York: 1935) item number 276.

      St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. November 21, 1867. - 5pp. manuscript (written on rectos only) on folio sheets, with the letter addressed to his mother on the fifth page, following the description of events. Approximately 1250 words total. Sheets with wear around the edges. Each sheet neatly backed with paper, repairing small tears or separations. Overall, in good condition, and very readable. In a half morocco and cloth folding box, spine gilt. An exciting firsthand account by an American sailor, describing the effects of the terrible earthquakes and tsunamis that hit the Virgin Islands on November 18, 1867. J.L.B. Cauvelt was a sailor aboard the U.S.S. De Soto, which was anchored in the harbor of St. Thomas when the earthquake hit. The ship was badly damaged in the resultant tsunamis caused by the earthquakes, which had an estimated 7.5 magnitude on the Richter scale. These are Cauvelt's original notes of his experiences, written shortly afterward and appended to a letter he wrote to his mother on November 21. On the afternoon of November 18, 1867, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake occurred in the Anegada trough, located between the Virgin Islands of St. Croix and St. Thomas. The earthquake actually consisted of two shocks, separated by ten minutes. These shocks generated two tsunami waves that were recorded at several island locations across the eastern Caribbean region, most notably on the islands of St. Thomas and St. Croix. The U.S.S. De Soto was docked at St. Thomas when the earthquake hit. Initially a private commercial ship, the De Soto was purchased by the United States Navy at the outbreak of the Civil War. The ship assisted in the blockade of Confederate ports, and participated in the capture or destruction of numerous blockade runners. The De Soto and two other American naval vessels arrived at St. Thomas on November 17, 1867, a day before the earthquakes and tsunamis hit. The De Soto was initially thrown onto a wharf, but was carried back to deep water by the next wave that hit St. Thomas. Badly damaged, the ship was repaired by its crew over the following days. Cauvelt begins by describing the earthquake and resultant tsunami: "At 2.50 p.m. Nov. 18th.we felt a strong quivering of the ship with a slight rumbling noise which we immediately recognized as a shock of an earthquake & of course run on deck. The shock lasted about 7 minutes and at 3.05 p.m. we saw the water rising in an immense wall about two miles out side the harbor, seemingly some 35 to 40 ft. high and advancing towards us. Of course we let go all our anchors & made what preparations we could closing all air ports &c. In about two minutes from the time we first saw it it struck a brig & bark on the outer edge of the harbor with a fearful force throwing them completely on their beam ends & the water rushing over them & parting all their moorings & tossing them about as if they were but shells. They however righted & both eventually went on shore where I suppose they will be total wrecks. A small tug boat of about two or three beams was just coming in to the harbor & received the full force & of course was swamped. Her capt. was picked up dead shortly afterwards. At the same time a sail boat went down just outside of us & all on board were lost. All this happened outside of us & as for what was going on inside of us I had no time to look for we were all rather anxious about our own fate but as the water came in the harbor it sensibly diminished & did not strike us with the same force that it did the vessels outside of us but when it struck us it made us tremble from stem to stern, at the same time parting two of our cables & sending us ashore. The reflux of the sea sent us back swinging us in all directions. One small anchor still being down but dragging & we thumping pretty heavily although as the bottom was soft it did not hurt us much. Black cloth boards show little rubbing on edges, bottom corners and two places along bottom edges are bumped. Plain paper jacket is stamped "Choctaw Pentateuch" on the front but we question whether this is an original jacket due to the remarkable condition and differing terminology. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 564 pp .

      1867. With Sixteen Illustrations by M. Ellen Edwards. In Two Volumes. London: Smith, Elder and Co., 1867. 2 pp undated ads in each volume. Original green cloth elaborately decorated in blind and gilt, beveled. First Edition of these adventures of Harry Clavering, beginning with Julia Brabazon jilting him in favor of a wealthy old debauchee.~It is a novel of atmosphere, and the atmosphere is of that sort very dangerous for the English novelist...; the green-lighted, close-scented gambling rooms, the shabby adventures of half-deserted spas, the shelving beaches of foreign watering-places, concealed accents, stolen passports, impoverished counts and impertinent ladies' maids... [Walpole, quoted in Gerould] ~Trollope himself later recalled that "I consider the story as a whole to be good, though I am not aware that the public ever corroborated that verdict." There were no subsequent two-volume editions following this first one.~Sadleir notes two very similar binding variants: one with the cloth stamped in gilt and in black, and the other identical except that the black stamping is replaced by blind-stamping. This copy is of the latter variant. Sadleir opines~I do not know which style is earlier, but would, on general principles, incline to favour that with the additional black-blocking. Not only is it less frequently found than the [blind-stamped] one above described, but publishers tend to simplify rather than to elaborate a binding design for economy's sake if for no other reason.~This set is in very good or slightly better condition -- quite clean and bright, with light wear along the spine ends and joints (the latter is typical for these volumes, because each spine bulks wider than the rest of the volume); the original terra-cotta endpapers are still here, with only minor cracking. One of the most characteristically Victorian of all Trollope's novels, and his personal favorite: "I regard this as the best novel I have written" - Trollope's Autobiography. Cloth a little worn and rubbed; tissue guards foxed, without affecting plates; very good copy; each volume is enclosed in a blue cloth slipcase. First edition, first issue. xx,360pp. §This is the original issue, hastily recalled by the publisher, containing poems by Walter Savage Landor issued without permission. The anthology was immediately reissued without them. WILLIAM JOHNSON CORY'S COPY, with ink inscription to half-title reading, "Wm Johnson from Lady Winchilsea received two days after leaving Haverholme Jan[.]y 9 1867". Cory was dismissed from Eton under a cloud of scandal in 1872, publicly changing his name from Johnson to Cory at the same time. Front free endpaper bears the inscription "William Johnson, Halsdon [Cory's inherited Devonshire home]" in black ink - hard to discern as the endpapers are a shade of dark green. Two pencilled textual annotations, perhaps in Cory's hand, and a lengthy pencilled note to verso of front free endpaper concerning the bibliographical details of this suppressed edition, in what seems to be the same hand. Original brown cloth with gilt fleur-de-lys decoration to spine & upper cover, and the same design in blind to lower board. An unsophisticated copy, spine showing wear, lower hinge slightly weak. (There are no poems by Cory in the anthology).

Large, thick royal 8vo, handsomely bound in the publisher's full contemporary brown cloth lettered and pictorially decorated in gilt on the spines, elaborate gilt decorative devices to the central panels of the covers, floral borders stamped in blind on both the covers and spines, gilt inner dentelles, a.e.g. xii, 400; [viii], 394, 2 ads. [iv]; 362 pp. A fine, beautifully preserved set, the text-blocks strong and clean, the cloth in excellent conditon with just a tad of rubbing to the tips of the spines primarily from shelving, corners, generally speaking, in nice condition with only a little wear or evidence of age or use, a bright, clean set, inner hinges in good order, those of Vol. I with a touch of separation to the paper at the pastedown and free-fly, a tight, and handsome set. A BEAUTIFULLY PRESERVED SET OF THIS CLASSIC WORK IN UNUSUALLY NICE CONDITION. The Stones of Venice is the three-volume treatise on Venetian art and architecture by the great English art historian John Ruskin. "The Stones of Venice examines Venetian architecture in detail, describing for example over eighty churches. He discusses architecture of Venice's Byzantine, Gothic and Renaissance periods, and provides a general history of the city. As well as an being an art historian, Ruskin was a social reformer. In the chapter "The Nature of Gothic" (Volume 2), Ruskin gives his views on how society should be organised. Ruskin set out to prove how Venetian architecture exemplified the principles he discussed in his earlier work, The Seven Lamps of Architecture. Ruskin had visited Venice before, but he made two visits to Venice with his wife Effie specially to research the book. The first visit was in the winter of 1849-50. The first volume of The Stones of Venice appeared in 1851 and Ruskin spent another winter in Venice researching the next two volumes. His research methods included sketching and photography (by 1849 he had acquired his own camera so that he could take daguerrotypes). It aroused considerable interest in Victorian Britain and beyond. The chapter "The Nature of Gothic" was admired by William Morris, who published it separately in an edition which is in itself an example of Gothic revival. The book inspired Marcel Proust (the narrator of the Recherche visits Venice with his mother in a state of enthusiasm for Ruskin) and in 2010 Roger Scruton wrote that the book was, "the greatest description in English of a place made sacred by buildings."
