Autograph letter signed "J. Belval" to unidentified correspondent

      - 3 pp. of a bifolium. 12mo. Dated Neuilly, Sunday, March 3 [1867?]. In black ink on personal stationery with embossed monogram printed in green at head. In French (with translation). An interesting letter in which Belval mentions no fewer than three important composers (Giuseppe Verdi, Félicien David, Hector Berlioz), three singers associated with the Paris Opéra (Louis-Henri Obin, Armand Castelmary, and Pauline Guéymard-Lauters), and the premiere of a new Verdi opera. Because Belval had the flu, he was unable to sing Bertram in a recent performance of Meyerbeer's Robert le Diable; Castelmary, a bass "of the third rank," had to replace him. Belval will sing Meyerbeer's Les Huguenots the following day. He has also asked Guéymard-Lauters to secure two seats for his correspondent for the first performance of Verdi's opera, because he has heard, via Obin, that the composer does not want a public dress rehearsal. Finally, he wishes to enlist the expertise of David and Berlioz regarding some musical matter."My friend Obin told me in effect that Verdi did not wish to hear talk of a dress rehearsal before the public, even a chosen one. But it has been twelve years that I have heard the same alarms with regard to every new opera. Therefore do not despair yet. I have asked Madame Gueymard to get herself signed up for two numbered seats at the theatre for the first performance. They are intended for you, in case the public is not admitted to the dress rehearsal. In principal, the choice of two composers as experts would only reassure me by half, if I had not myself influenced Mr. Félicien David to decide to accept the task, and if in time Mr. Berlioz, to whom I recounted the affair, did not agree with me. Obin went to speak to them both; he could enlighten them much better than I about the disproportion of the two roles. "Slightly worn; creased at folds. Belval, a French bass, "studied at the Paris Conservatoire and made his début in 1846 at Antwerp. After singing in Toulouse, Lyons, the Hague, Ghent and Brussels, he was engaged at the Paris Opéra, making his début in 1855 as Marcel in Les Huguenots. His roles included Bertram (Robert le diable), Balthazar (La favorite), Walter Furst (Guillaume Tell) and Zaccharie (Le prophéte). He took part in many premiéres and created Gargantua in Labarre';s Pantagruel (1855), the Count of Poitou in Halévy';s La magicienne (1858), Soloman in Gounod';s La reine de Saba (1862), Archbishop Turpin in Mermet';s Roland à Roncevaux (1864), Don Pédro in L';Africaine (1865) and King Claudius in Thomas'; Hamlet (1868). he made his last appearance at the Opéra in 1875 as Cardinal Brogni in La Juive, at the public inauguration of the Palais Garnier. His voice was a deep bass, ample in size and dark in tone." Elizabeth Forbes in Grove online. The Verdi opera to which Belval refers is probably Don Carlos, which premiered at the Paris Opéra on March 11, 1867. Louis-Henri Obin, Pauline Guéymard-Lauters, and Armand Castelmary created, respectively, the roles of Philip II, Eboli, and the monk (Charles V) for the first performance. There is a small closed tear to the front wrapper which has not resulted in any loss at all. Internally, the book is in fabulous condition for it's age. The pages are clean, original and un

Reminiscences of an Old [New] Yorker

New York: W. L. Andrews, 1867. First. hardcover. near fine. Many plates. 102pp. 4to, handsomely bound in 19th century 3/4 brown morocco. New York: W. L. Andrews, 1867. First Edition. Near Fine. Scarce. One of only 35 copies printed. The remainder of 34 copies were presumably not illustrated and were bound in cloth. This unique copy has been carefully extra-illustrated, and re-bound in contemporary leather. A holograph note on the title page reads "Illustrated by Henry J. Camman, 1875". Most of the mounted illustrations are portraits of American Revolutionary figures, or of New Yorkers. Included are many views of New York architecture, a map of Revolutionary New York & environs in 1778 and a few views of Dutch New York. William Duer was a prominent lawyer who later became judge, as well as president of Columbia College. Bound in are two letters from Morgan Dix, rector of Trinity Church. A newspaper article is affixed to a blank page. William Loring Andrews published books distinctive for their taste in type, illustrations & binding, usually in very limited editions, which were widely collected.

Bound for Comte Christian de Tocqueville (1862-1924), with his gilt arms on each board and his bookplate. Occasional foxing and dusting, but an excellent gathering, in a handsome binding. An interesting and varied collection of works about Alexis de Tocqueville, assembled by and bound for his nephew, and editor of some of his uncle's posthumously published works. Among the principal items present are: a) Cassou, Charles: TOCQUEVILLE (ALEXIS DE) [wrapper title]. [Np: Imprimerie de Madame de Lacombe, [ca. 1842]. 47,[1]pp; b) Gigot, Albert: M. DE TOCQUEVILLE. Paris: Charles Douniol, 1861. 39,[1]pp. Original front wrapper bound in; c) Lacordaire, [Jean- Baptiste Henri]: DISCOURS PRONONCÉS DANS LA SÉANCE PUBLIQUE TENUE PAR L'ACADÉMIE FRANCAISE ...LE 24 JANVIER 1861. Inscribed by the author in the upper margin of the title-page to the subject's widow, Madam Alexis de Tocqueville; e) Tocqueville, A. de: LETTRE SUR LES DERNIERS MOMENTS ... ADRESSÉE PAR M. LE VICOMTE DE TOCQUEVILLE, SON FRÈRE ... [Np. nd]. [4]pp.; f) Mignet, Francois: NOTICE HISTORIQUE SUR LA VIE ET LES TRAVAUX DE ALEXIS DE TOCQUEVILLE ... Paris: Firmin Didot, 1866. 31,[1]pp.; g) Savary, Charles: ALEXIS DE TOCQUEVILLE SA VIE ET SES OUVRAGES DISCOURS .... Paris: Gustave Retaux, 1867. 40pp. Other items include extracts of signed and unsigned reviews of Tocqueville's works (including their translations into English) from various sources, memorials, etc. Kergorlay's work is of special significance, both for the excellent association value of this particular copy, and for its relevance as a memoir by Tocqueville's cousin and one of his oldest and closest friends. Lacordaire's DISCOURS ... is also of particular note, as it marked the occasion of his taking the seat in the Académie Francaise left vacant by de Tocqueville's death. It is in large part a tribute to his predecessor, and includes the text of the formal response by Guizot.

[SIX PEN-AND-INK FIGURE STUDIES BY AUGUSTUS KOLLNER]

[Philadelphia, 1867. Some light wear at edges. One drawing with some light foxing; relatively minor soiling otherwise. Very good. Six large figure drawings by German-American artist Augustus Kollner, depicting male nudes in various poses: standing, lying, and sitting. Though Kollner is best known for his lithographs and watercolors, he also produced etchings, woodcuts, and drawings, preferring pen and ink as his medium for these. Aside from the earliest of these studies, dated March 1837, the drawings were executed in Philadelphia during the 1860s, after Kollner's commercial ventures had mostly subsided. "German-born Augustus Theodore Frederick Kollner arrived in America in 1839 and enjoyed an artistically fruitful career in this country until his death in 1906....Associated at one time or another with each of the major lithographic firms in Philadelphia, he worked his way from journeyman to artist, to chief artist, to partner. Ultimately, he owned his own establishment" - Wainwright. After the Civil War his career flagged, but because of his wife's inheritance he was able to pick and choose what projects he accepted. This financial freedom also allowed him the luxury to paint at leisure, and in his later years he generated a tremendous amount of work, which he often kept bound up in albums. An attractive and unusual example of Kollner's artistic abilities. Wainwright, "Augustus Kollner, Artist" in PMHB, Vol. 84, no. 3 (ref).

A pleasing copy. A revised edition of this important work, first published as "The Silurian System" in 1839, with a fascinating letter from the author. The first page of the letter bears the blindstamp of the Geological Survey of Great Britain and begins "My dear Reeve, I have begged John Murray to send you a Copy of this which will arguably be the last production of my long life..." He continues by asking his correspondent to read the new material in the second and last chapters, "containing a fuller declaration of my geological faith than heretofore... which will not be palatable to some of the New School...", and declares the updated work to be the "Bible of Paleozoic Life". Murchison suggests that Reeve has the book reviewed and in doing so "...asks for no eulogy - but a fair analysis of the labours..." he has undertaken.

La goutte. Sa nature, son traitement et le rhumatisme goutteux

1867 - [10] ff., 710 pp., [1] p., 8 Paris, A. Delahaye, 1867, in-8, [10] ff, 710 pp, [1] p, 8 pl, demi-chagrin vert, dos à nerfs orné. "Garrod was the leading authority of his time on gout, which he separated from other forms of arthritis by his discovery of excess of uric acid in the blood of gouty sufferers. He gave to rheumatoid arthritis its present name." (Garrison-Morton, 4497) Bon exemplaire bien complet des pages de la table des matières qui manquent parfois. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Poet William Cullen Bryant presided over the banquet, assisted by James W. Beekman, Henry Clews, and Theodore Roosevelt, father of the then eight-year-old future President.Benito Juarez was constitutionally elected President of Mexico in 1861 and, during the French intervention and rule of Emperor Maximilian I (until May 15, 1867), Matias Romero was Juárez's envoy in the United States. The first of the 20 pages of letters is from Secretary of State William H. Seward; the second is from Gen. U.S. Grant. Others include Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles, Admiral David D. Porter, Speaker of the House Schuyler Colfax, and Gen. A.E. Burnside. Published is Minister Romero's acceptance of his invitation, in part, ""Gentlemen: I have been honored with the letter you had the kindness to address me on the 16th instant, inviting me to a Dinner at such time as may suit my convenience to appoint. It is very gratifying to me, gentlemen, that such good friends of mine and prominent citizens of New York as you, who have encouraged me so much throughout the contest, would now tender me this significant demonstration, selecting a time when I am about returning home, after having obtained, thanks to a merciful Providence, the patriotism of the Mexican people and the noble sympathy of the people of the United States, a crowning success in all the objects of my labors. I take this flattering demonstration to be the renewed expression of your sympathy for the efforts of the Mexican people in defending the Independence of their Country and the institutions of their choice, and for the patriotic conduct of the Republican Government which did so much to achieve success…"" Purchased in a group of other books which were from the library of Grant's son and probably from Grant's library before that."

        The English Constitution

London: Chapman and Hall,, 1867. Reprinted from the "Fortnightly Review Octavo (197 × 122 mm). Recent dark blue morocco, titles and decoration to spine gilt, raised bands, single rule to boards gilt, marbled endpapers gilt edges. Ownership inscription dated 1908 of Alfred Barratt Brown, the editor of Great Democrats (1934), to the original free endpaper. The occasional minor blemish, an excellent copy. First edition in bookform, first published in instalments in The Fortnightly Review between 1865-1866. "Its purpose was to show the actual working of the Constitution in the period between the first and second Reform Acts, and in this it was brillantly successful. 'No author of modern times', wrote Dicey, 'has done so much to elucidate the intricate workings of English government as Bagehot. His English Constitution is so full of brightness, originality, and wit, that few students notice how full it is also of knowledge, of wisdom, and of insight... The English Constitution is undoubtedly Bagehot's greatest work. He never revised it, although he wrote a preface for the second edition in 1872. It has retained both its freshness and relevance, and rightly ranks as one of the English classics" (St. John Stevas). "This classic account of that most elusive and least codified of entities, the Constitution of England, never lost its popularity, and shows signs of being elevated from the rank of first-class handbook to a place with De Tocqueville as one of the most important texts in political literature ... Bagehot's work is of more than English importance: it is the great defence of empirical as against theoretical politics." (Printing and the Mind of Man).

        Exposition Universelle de 1867, Paris

Lemercier, Paris 1867 - Four panel, accordion-folding peepshow of the 1867 Exposition Universelle, held on the Champ-de-Mars in Paris. The front-face shows a bird's-eye view of the exposition complex as seen from the north bank of the Seine. Beneath the image, the title is written in five languages, along with the publisher information. Three small, circular peep holes cross the center. The cut-out panels inside the peepshow depict the crowded interior of the circular Vestibule and Palace. The visitors, of all shapes and sizes and wearing all manner of dress, wander between the booths in the glass-ceilinged exhibition area. The booths themselves, colored in rich warm tones, represent a range of Eastern cultures, lending the entire spectacle an air of the exotic. The back-scene shows the open garden at the center of the Palace. Curtained entrances ring the green, labeled with the names and flags of the participating nations. These wonderfully detailed crowd scenes offer something new each time the viewer returns to them. The front and back boards are covered in a patterned purple cloth, with a gold border along the edges of the front-face. Light wear to covers and two small segments of gold border missing, else this rare peepshow is in fine working order. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Binding, Fine- Zaehnsdorf, Bound in 1867 by Joseph Zaehnsdorf] Les Navigations Francaises et la Revolution Maritime

Paris: Librairie Tross, 1867. Exquisitely and finely bound by JOSEPH ZAEHNSDORF in 1867 and exhibited by him in the Paris Exhibition of 1867, with an original authenticating holograph full-page note by his son, J. W. Zaehnsdorf on a front free fly leaf: "May 1st, 1906. Les Navigations Francaises par Pierre Margy, Paris 1867. Bound in full blue levant morocco, crushed, finished with a geometrical pattern after the style of of the French Master-Binder "Le Gascon." This book was specially bound by Joseph Zaehnsdorf (The Elder) for exhibition as a specimen of his art. It was exhibited in the Paris Exhibition of 1867. J. W. Zaehnsdorf." Superbly bound and finished with intricate stippled weaving design elements consisting of rolling stylized vines ending in flowers, each within complicated and different shaped geometric figures in an all-over design on both covers and spine, with five raised bands and five elaborate gilt compartments on spine, gilt designs on dentelles, blue-green silk endsheets. With the gilt pallet, "Bound by Zaehnsdorf" on front bottom dentelle. AEG. 443pp. A magnificent and exceedingly scarce Zaehnsdorf binding, one of the earliest recorded and verified by date, since the book was published in 1867 and consequently exhibited in the 1867 Paris Exhibition, thus narrowing the date of execution sometime in the year 1867. Unrecorded. Not in Broomhead, who shows a few examples from this time period, including one from an exhibition in 1862, but nothing as ornately lavish as our example. What must be considered among the finest of the earliest Zaehnsdorf bindings, made much more desirable with the inscription by Joseph Zaehnsdorf's son, who took over the firm and brought it to its zenith in the late 19th Century. The book is near fine, with slight wear to head and foot of spine, otherwise nearly pristine. In what appears to be its original green slipcase (marbled paper) with cotton felt lining.

National Map of the Territory of the United States

1867 - KEELER, W. J. National Map of the Territory of the United States from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. Washington: J.F. Gedney, Lithographer, 1867. Large folding map, measuring 49 by 59 inches, backed with linen. Issued in original brown cloth portfolio rebacked with the original spine laid down, cover-title stamped in gilt. $8000.First edition of one of the most important late 19th-century maps of the American West, locating deposits of gold, silver, copper, quicksilver, iron and coal. This key map of the western territories of the United States, “the best at the time” (Howes, 311), is “imposing… It offers something of interest in every part of the West” (Wheat V, 213). Made in the Office of the Indian Bureau, but privately printed and copyrighted, Keeler’s map tracks railroad lines (both completed and those in progress), and locates both military posts and Indian reservations, which are color-codedâ€"an early use of this cartographic device. “Numerous towns and settlements were shown for the first time on a general map” (Martin, 157). “This is a complete Railroad Map, the only one published which shows the whole of the great Pacific Railroad routes and their projections and branches.” Notably, the Union Pacific Railroad is shown as completed as far west as the present Nebraska-Wyoming border. Perhaps most importantly, however, Keeler identifies recently discovered gold, silver, copper, quicksilver, iron and coal deposits. “It is the attraction of these hidden treasures,” he observes in the accompanying sheet of descriptive text, “that is drawing those great lines of railroad across the Continent.” Text laid down inside front cover. Published simultaneously with a special “presentation” issue. Wheat 1170. Martin 47. Graff 2281. Howes K22 (note). Map in fine condition. Minor spotting to original portfolio. An impressive and informative production. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
