Bosch Brasilien Bibl. Nr. 526. - Junk Rara, S. 4 u. 51 (vergriffen u. sehr selten).
Leclere (pr. Lyon: Louis Perrin), 1866. Nogaret (1740-1831) was perhaps more noted as France's theatrical censor or as the Freemason responsible for various Masonic hymns than as an author -- with one exception, that being his story about an automaton created by a man named Frankenstein, predating Shelley's by almost 30 years. In the present collection (originally published in 1780), he gathers some of his own poems, short stories, and literary essays, including "La Main Chaude," "Délire bachique," and "Bouquet à Jean" along with pieces by other contemporary hands. This is => one of only 30 copies printed on papier de Chine, this example with an extra suite of plates bound in offering a second state of the frontispiece and the eleven headpiece engravings by Duplessis-Bertaux. Binding: Contemporary signed blue morocco, covers framed in gilt triple fillets with gilt-stamped arabesque central medallion surrounded by a frame of gilt double fillets with gilt-stamped corner fleurons, spine gilt extra, with gilt dentelles and marbled paper pastedowns; lower edge of front dentelle stamped "Allô" (Paul Charles Allô, 1823-90). All edges gilt. Original slim, tricolor silk bookmarker laid in.

Dimsdale, Prof. Thos J.
Virginia City: M.T.: Montana Post Press, D.W. Tilton & Co.(1866). 16mo. (6 ½ x 4 ¾ inches), half red morocco over marbled paper boards, t.e.g. 228 pp. Minor notes and underlining in pencil on title page; two printer's corrections to page 41. Lacking ads at end. One of three variations of the first edition of the first book published in Montana, it is exceedingly rare and unusually fresh. The author, editor of the Virginia City Montana Presss, wrote this work to record the history of Montana vigilantes and to defend their efforts as not only necessary but proper. Vigilantism was a reaction to the lawlessness of the Montana mining camps, and the author participated in the campaign to impose order. Included is a description of the crimes, including murder and robbery, of Henry Plummer's Road Agent Band which terrorized the area and motivated the rise of vigilante justice.Charles Dickens reportedly said, "This is the most interesting book I ever read in my life." Adams Six Guns 596, Graff 1086; Howes D-345; Montana Imprints 2; Streeter sale IV:2221; Streeter Americana Beginnings 72.

LAMBERT (Gustave)
[Attributes: Soft Cover]

RUSSELL (W. H.)
London: Day & Son Limited, [1866]. First edition, folio, v, [1, blank], 117, [1, blank],pp., chromolithographed title-page (small unobtrusive blind-stamp at head), 25 coloured lithograph plates all mounted on card as issued within gilt borders, captions and imprints below, some occasional foxing, red half morocco, marbled paper sides, spine tooled in gold. Russell's book is perhaps the most spectacular work on the Atlantic Cable, with lithographs from original drawings made by Robert Dudley on the Great Eastern cable laying voyage. A fine de-luxe copy of this beautifully produced record, culminating in the first voyage using the S.S. 'Great Eastern' in 1865. The present work was issued in two forms: the regular issue with tinted plates and the present de luxe issue on large paper with the plates hand-coloured and mounted.

Cherry, Cummings
Cincinnati: Wrightson & Co., 1866. 86pp. plus two folding maps. Presentation binding of dark blue morocco with red inlays, boards paneled and tooled in gilt, spine gilt, gilt inner dentelles, a.e.g. Boards scuffed and bowed, front joint weak. Internally very clean and very good. A presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Senor M. Romero. Minister of the Mexican Republic. Washington DC. With the compliments of the Cincinnati & Sonora Land and Mining Association, Sept. 14, 1866." Cherry was a mining engineer who produced several reports on mineral deposits in various areas of the United States, and who authored other works for the Cincinnati and Sonora Mining Association (see Sabin, Howes, and the Streeter sale, all of whom list other works, but not the present title). Cherry's report is illustrative of a post-Civil War boomlet of interest in the mineral wealth of the Sonora region of northern Mexico (doubtless aided by a rumor that the United States might annex it). Cherry writes glowingly of the potential mineral wealth of the area while downplaying the threat from hostile Apaches, objections from the Mexican government, and a shortage of labor. The geological report is quite thorough, and the maps show a portion of "Cherry's Traveling Military Map of Sonora" and the Ranche San Juan del Rio. OCLC locates ten copies. Scarce. OCLC 3502151.
