TELDERS, Jean Marie.
A detailed and illustrated 1866 engineer's report for the construction of an iron railway bridge over the Waal River at Zaltbommel (often called Bommel) in the Netherlands, built in the years 1860 to 1870. Telders (1842-1900) signs the report as adjunct engineer and later became a professor of hydraulic engineering at Delft. The main text is written on the rectos, leaving the facing versos for the numbered figures, mostly drawn in colour. The report includes calculations of the weighting under various circumstances. The illustrations show abstracted drawings of trains, drawings of the bridge structures and various diagrams. Because the Netherlands was so flat, it was one of the first countries to introduce a railway system (in 1839) but the large rivers remained a challenge. This bridge formed an important link between the railway networks in the northern and southern parts of the country, previously connected only near the coast and near the German border. It continued in use long after a bridge for automobile traffic opened near it in 1933.With a contemporary owner's inscription and stamps. With minor foxing and the edges of a few leaves slightly browned and tattered, but still in very good condition. The spine is damaged, with the head and foot of the backstrip lost, but the binding structure remains sound.

Pierce Urges His Young Nephew Studying at Princeton: "Do Not for a Day Relax Your Labor" Former President Franklin Pierce worries that young Frank Pierce - like most undergraduates - is occupying himself with things other than his studies at Princeton. FRANKLIN PIERCE. Autograph Letter Signed to Frank H. Pierce, his nephew. Concord, N.H., September 6, 1866. 2 pp. Inventory #21116 Partial Transcript "The letter which I received from you soon after your examination at Princeton led me to expect another soon but none has been received. I hope you are not ill again. Kirk returned to resume his studies at the commercial College last week. My health is apparently firm again. Is your room satisfactorily furnished and are your studies and other matters going smoothly with you. If you find yourself better fitted than most of your class, which your advantages would lead me to expect, do not for a day relax your labor, but make but make [sic] the most of it. Write me." Historical Background The political reputation of Pierce was fatally damaged by his defense of slavery, his refusal to concede the legitimacy of the Civil War at its outset, and by his continuing friendship with Confederate President Jefferson Davis. He resumed his law practice, but was haunted by his personal and political demons. Pierce, an alcoholic, and his chronically ill wife, Jane, had watched two young sons die before the age of three. Their third, Benjamin, was killed tragically in a train accident a month before Pierce's inauguration in early 1853. Jane Pierce came to believe Benjamin's death was a form of div … [Click Below for Full Description]

Philadelphia: Published by Jas. B. Rodgers, nos. 52 & 54 North Sixth St, 1866. Octavo (19.5 x 13 cm.), vi, 212 pages. Frontispiece. FIRST EDITION. A report on the activities of the Philadelphia war relief operation named the Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon. "The saloon, established in 1861 in the cooperage of William M. Cooper & Company, was a volunteer relief agency that provided meals, hospital care, and facilities for washing, sleeping, and writing to over 400,000 military personnel, refugees, and freedmen during the Civil War." (Library of Congress World Digital Library). "The soldier forsook the endearments of the domestic hearth, and with brave spirit went to the field of contest in support of the grand principles involved in the preservation of order. The citizens of Philadelphia, with a liberality that does them lasting honor, conceived and carried out the design of rendering them service by the way, and assuaging their sufferings and the cravings of appetite" (from the Preface). The engraved frontispiece depicts a line of soldiers in front of the Cooper Shop with volunteer workers in the background. Because the saloon served so many soldiers returning from war, the medical needs of some of these soldiers demanded creation of a Cooper Shop Hospital, which was founded in November of 1861. ~ Pencil collation marks to verso of rear free end paper; some light soiling to a few pages. In publisher's textured green cloth; front cover bears a gilt-stamped vignette of the shop and its American flag (taken but modified from the frontispiece); the rear cover bears t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thomas Carlyle
London: Chapman and Hall, 1866. Carlyle (4 December 1795 - 5 February 1881) was a Scottish philosopher, satirical writer, essayist, historian and teacher during the Victorian era. His combination of a religious temperament with loss of faith in traditional Christianity, made Carlyle's work appealing to many Victorians who were grappling with scientific and political changes that threatened the traditional social order. He brought a trenchant style to his social and political criticism and a complex literary style to his works. His works themselves were incredibly diverse, a fact testified to in this set which features fiction, histories, lectures, essays, biographies, translations, and satires. This collection, ordered here in a rough chronology, contains: - Sartor Resartus and Lectures on Heroes. - The French Revolution, in two volumes. - Chartism and Past and Present. - Oliver Cromwell's Letters and Speeches: With Elucidations, in two volumes. - Latter-Day Pamphlets. - Two Biographies: Friedrich Schiller; John Sterling. - History of Friedrich II of Prussia, called Frederick the Great, in seven volumes. - Translations from the German, in two volumes. - Miscellaneous Essays, in four volumes. Notable inclusions amongst these titles are Sartor Resartus - Carlyle's first major work and an ambitious attempt to create a new kind of book -, The French Revolution - a similarly momentous work that 'was filled with a passion hitherto unknown in historical writing'- and Frederick the Great, Carlyle's last major work. The fourth volume of the latter contains several attractive folding … [Click Below for Full Description]

FRESNEL, Augustin (1788-1827).
Imprimerie Imperiale, 1866. 3 volumes. 4to. [4], xcix, [1], 804, [2]; [4], 864, [2]; [4], lxxv, [1], 751, [1] pp. Frontis. portrait, folding color map, 17 plates, figs. Original beige printed boards. Bookplate of Andras Gedeon. RARE IN ORIGINAL BOARDS. First Collected edition. Frensel was a French physicist and one of the first and proponents of the wave theory of light. His contributions to both mathematics and optics can be seen in the quantity of concepts named for him: he is the namesake of the Fresnel lens, equations, integral, rhomb, zone, number, and imager. "Beginning in 1804 Fresnel served as an engineer building roads in various departments of France. He began his research in optics in 1814. He lost his post temporarily during the period following Napoleon's return from Elba in 1815. At the beginning of the 19th century, the scientific community championed Isaac Newton's corpuscular, or particle, theory of light. However, in 1802 Young showed that an interference pattern is produced when light from two sources overlaps, which could happen only if light was a wave. Fresnel initially did not know about Young's experiment, but his experiments with various devices for producing interference fringes and diffraction convinced him that the wave theory of light was correct. As a starting point for his mathematical description of diffraction, Fresnel used Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens's principle that every point on a wave front can be considered a secondary source of spherical wavelets. Fresnel presented his work on diffraction as an entry to a competition on the su … [Click Below for Full Description]

E. Martinet 1866. 4to. (270 x 216 mm) [4], 96 pp. Two engraved plates. Presentation inscription from the author, "A M[ssieur] le D[octeur] Pettigrew avec les complements de l'auteur P Bert" at the top of the title page; light foxing to first few leaves. Modern quarter black levant morocco over marbled boards, gilt-lettered spine, gilt fillet on covers; very attractive binding. FIRST EDITION. This work is the thesis by Bert for his PhD. in natural sciences from the College de France. The work is dedicated to his mentor, Claude Bernard, as well as Pierre Gratiolet and Henri Milne-Edwards, three eminent scientists who shaped his thought processes and methods in experimental physiology, the critical evaluation of experimental findings and the attempt to describe the basic laws of physiology. This treatise specifically deals with animal tissue transplantation. Although transplantation was thought to be physiologically impossible, Bert did succeed in creating "double monsters," uniting two rats by suturing their skins together. In another experiment, he succeeded in implanting the tip of the tail of a young albino rat under the skin of its back and demonstrating new bone growth and sensory impulse reversal. Through experimentation with temperature, humidity, and various chemical agents, he declared that cells and tissues lived their own lives, growing and differentiating independently of any superior vital force as long as they were in a suitable environmental surrounding. Interestingly, due to his involvement with politics, Bert was appointed as consul general to Tonkin (French … [Click Below for Full Description]

She writes of the filthy conditions and the lack of a wash house, they need help but many of the upper class women of the South would not help for they felt it beneath them. They would not visit the men in the hospital and when asked if they could make bandages, they simply disregarded the question. She speaks of General John Bell Hood's second wounding when he lost a leg. She writes of the retreat to Atlanta, of Lincoln's refusal to trade prisoners. She speaks of the Africans who may be able to learn to read and write but in her view will never rise to any decent level. London, Taylor and Francis, 1867. 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions", Vol. 157 - Part I. Titlepage to volume 155 and pp. 49-88. Titlepage with minor light browning at corners. Internally clean. Everett considers this paper (1868) to be Maxwell's greatest single paper. Maxwell's discoveries laid the foundations of special relativity and quantum mechanics. One of Maxwell's major investigations was on the kinetic theory of gases. Originating with Daniel Bernoulli, this theory was advanced by the successive labours of John Herapath, John James Waterston, James Joule, and particularly Rudolf Clausius, to such an extent as to put its general accuracy beyond a doubt; but it received enormous development from Maxwell, who in this field appeared as an experimenter (on the laws of gaseous friction) as well as a mathematician. In 1866, he formulated statistically, independently of Ludwig Boltzmann, the Maxwell-Boltzmann kinetic theory of gases. His formula, called the Maxwell distribution, gives the fraction of gas molecules moving at a specified velocity at any given temperature. In the kinetic theory, temperatures … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bisson, Auguste-Rosalie; Bardin, Libre-Irmand
Auguste-Rosalie Bisson, Paris. Vintage photographic map. Albumen print mounted on cardboard sheets, comprises three sections. Foldings strengthen with cloth. Item dimensions: 555 × 890 mm (in three parts). Photograph dimensions: 395 × 735 mm (in three parts). Scarce, nineteenth-century photographic map of the Dauphiné Alps, created by the French pioneer photographer, Auguste-Rosaline Bisson. The original, hand-painted relief map which served as the basis of the present photographic map was made by Libre-Irmand Bardin (1794-1867), a former professor of the École Polytechnique in Paris who created a series of topographic maps of the most important French mountain ranges in 1864-1866. As such maps were expensive to produce and difficult to handle, Bardin commissioned Auguste-Rosaline Bisson (1826-1900) to make photographic reproductions of his maps in order to make them affordable for a larger audience. Thanks to his refined lighting, Bisson's images represented the maps in an almost tactile manner achieving the praise of his contemporaries. Auguste-Rosaline Bisson (or Bisson jeune) is most famous for being the first photographer to take photos from the summit of Mont Blanc. With 25 porters carrying his equipment, he climbed the mountain in July 1861 and took three images on large collodion plates. From the 1840s until 1863 he worked together with his brother, Louis-Auguste Bisson (1814-1876) whom with they run a truly successful photographic firm, employing about 200 people at the peak of their career. The spine has raised bands in 6 compartments with a gold flower design, all edges gilt; gilt dentelles. First published edition, with 42 illustrations by John Tenniel. A Fine copy, unusually clean throughout. Tipped into this copy is a quirky two-sided letter by Carroll written using his characteristic purple ink, dated Feb. 8. 1888.It reads: 'Dear Steward, I am much obliged for the estimates for the electric bell, and shall be quite willing to bear my share of the expense, under any of the arrangements named, I should want a 'push' in each of my 2 bedrooms - Hadland thought that (as both rooms look out North) the best way to reach them would be to continue the roof cord, & bring it down outside and in at the windows: however, you can arrange it as you think best. Please not to charge further Quarterage, for C.R., to Mr. S. W. Worthington. Very Truly Yours, C. L. Dodgson. Macmillan and Co, 1866. Original red pictorial cloth gilt. a.e.g. Light blue endpapers. Second (First Published) Edition. Some spotting here & there throughout; spine repaired and a little cocked; rub on rear endpaper where an old catalogue entry had been adhered; else a very good copy. There are some contemporary pencil annotations where the identity of certain characters is believed to have been identified (Mad Hatter etc.,). Contained in a folding, felt-lined, cloth gilt box.The first (Withdrawn) edition and the second edition are both taller than later printings. It remains uncertain how many copies of this edition were printed. The likelihood is that two thousand copies were printed, but it may have been as many as four thousand. The book was actually issued in November 1865, the same year as the first ('Withdrawn') edition. It is becoming increasingly rare to find copies of this printing in the original cloth, the vast majority of copies on the market having been rebound.

Hughes, Dr. John W.]
Printed for the Leader Company, Cleveland, 1866. 58pp. Disbound. Original printed wrappers, the front wrapper illustrated with a portrait of Dr. Hughes. Some wrapper spotting and wear. Text clean, but a printer's flaw at page 52 affects several letters without obscuring their meaning. Good+. This is the 58-page edition, which adds Hughes's farewell letter. The other printing is 57 pages. In August 1865, "Jealous and intoxicated, Hughes, on the streets of Bedford, Ohio, shot the seventeen-year-old girl he had seduced. At his execution, he spoke for fifteen minutes until the sheriff reminded him 'Time is going.' Then he dropped" [McDade]. Hughes, though married, lived a life "of indulgence, dissipation and moral and physical abandon." His interesting life in and out of prison is described in detail. A Civil War veteran, he was assigned as a surgeon to the 48th Regiment, U.S. Colored Troops. In December 1864 he deceived young Miss Parsons by pretending he was available to marry her, "under cover of a forged bill of divorce from his loving wife." Hughes's lawyer mounted a defense of "hereditary insanity." The pamphlet summarizes the testimony of witnesses, the arguments of counsel, the judge's charge to the jury [which includes a long discussion of the insanity defense], the verdict of guilty, Dr. Hughes's "final arraignment," his efforts to "secure a commutation," his attempt to kill himself with morphine, the execution, and his farewell letter to his wife and children.
