Liszt, Franz, Austro-Hungarian composer (1811-1886).
[Rome, c. 1863-1865]. - 16mo. 6 pp. To an unknown recipient, apparently a wealthy music lover and possibly a patron of the composer. In one of the letters Liszt invites himself with a friend at the recipient's place for a moment of musical relaxation and returns 20 francs to him that he has paid too much for concert tickets. In the other letter the pianist transmits him programmes and tickets for a concert and proposes to "honour the sight of Madonna des Rosario" and to let his correspondent know. The composer's time seems to be filled with musical social commitments: "All of my week is planned until Friday". - Provenance: Robert Bory, musicologist.

This is the scarce account of Livingstone's second expedition. "Other explorers we have had whose fame rose as high, but it lasted only for a few years. Johnson, Andrew
Washington, D.C., 1865. [1]pp. Folio bifolium. Light edge wear. Near fine. An important official printing of the presidential proclamation ending martial law in Kentucky in October 1865. Kentucky had not joined the Confederacy, so the proclamation of martial law there was a step Lincoln had avoided until it seemed absolutely necessary. Martial law had been declared by President Lincoln on July 5, 1864, when the Civil War was still raging and "combinations were in progress in Kentucky for the purpose of inciting insurgent raids into that State." Johnson also comments on why martial law can now be ended because "the danger from insurgent raids into Kentucky has substantially passed away." An extraordinarily rare government publication, with only one copy in OCLC, at the Filson Historical Society. OCLC 49243807.

Andrew Johnson
The service was quite likely involuntary, so Johnson exercised clemency and ordered the man released John Reed of Bedford County, Pennsylvania, fled to Canada to avoid military service, and when drafted refused to report. In August 1865 John killed the Deputy Provost in his district for reporting on him to the authorities. John's brother Mengle was accused of being an accessory in the murder, but the Grand Jury failed to find a bill against him. So the local Bedford authorities arrested Mengle again, this time for treason for joining the rebel army during Lee's invasion of Pennsylvania in the Gettysburg Campaign. His two days of service in Lee's army was, many believed, involuntary and was essentially forced labor. They stated that the facts of his service were exaggerated to gin up a case against Mengle and prevent him from testifying on behalf of his brother in his upcoming murder trial. Alexander H. Coffroth, member of Congress from the 16th District of Pennsylvania, was one of those who thought the treason charge against Mengle Reed was inappropriate. To end the matter, he presented the facts and an application for pardon to President Andrew Johnson, and succeeded in having the pardon granted. Document signed, as President, September 14, 1865, stating: "Whereas one Mengel Reed...is now under arrest on a warrant from the United States District Court...And whereas I am assured that the circumstances of his case render him a proper object of executive clemency, Now Therefore, let it be known that I, Andrew Johnson, President of the United States...do hereby grant to th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Flaubert, Gustave, French writer (1821-1880).
1865. Large 8vo. 1 p. To Alfred Nion, Flaubert writes for news of his "fairy" play, Le Chateau Des Coeurs; desiring to demonstrate that this old form can be profitably revived, he is nevertheless pessimistic about the sucess of his play: "Eh bien, et la Feerie, cher ami? Je crois que contrairement au proverbe 'pas de nouvelles, bonnes nouvelles' la chose est completement flambée? Mon seuil en est tout fait. J'avais cependant été bien aise de gagner quelques portraits de l'empereur sur metal, avec cette folichonnerie [...] on peut se servir d'un cadre usé [pour] rajeunir un vieux genre. Tu serais bien gentil de me dire ce que ton patron en a pensé". - Dated in the hand of Caroline Commanville, his literary executor; light creasing along old folds.
