Our Mutual Friend. In Two Volumes

London - Chapman and Hall, 1865 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. The first edition of Dickens' last complete novel, Our Mutual Friend. Complete in two volumes. Bound from the parts. With forty illustrated plates by Marcus Stone, collated complete. The novel with its panoramic treatment of contemporary society, complex plotting, scathing social satire, and masterly emblematic art recalls both Bleak House and Little Dorrit. It differs from these predecessors in a number of important ways, however. Most notably, both of the love stories at the heart of the book (the earlier novels each have only one main love story) end on a very positive note -ODNB. Condition: In a Victorian calf binding. Externally, rubbed. The joints are starting. The front hinge of volume two is slightly strained. Internally, firmly bound, with foxing as usual and some marks. There are small tidemarks to the margins of the first 90 pages of volume one. Overall: GOOD..

        The fishes of Malabar

London, Bernard Quaritch, 1865. Large 4to (32.5 x 25.5 cm). xxxii, 293 pp., 20 engraved plates. Later green cloth. Spine with black morocco label and gilt lines and title.* A very rare book by the British ichthyologist and Inspector-General of Fisheries in India, Francis Day (1829-1889) on the fish fauna of southwestern India, from Goa to the southern tip of the peninsula. He is best known for writing the fish-section of the Fauna of British India, but this earlier work is perhaps more important. This is the very rare original, however, the plain edition. The finely engraved plates and text figures are by the author. At least one species, Microphis bleekeri, is new. Subscribers, with the number of copies ordered split into coloured and plain copies, are listed in the front. In all, no more than 28 coloured copies, and 19 plain copies are listed, the latter mainly ordered by bookshops and governmental organizations. Uncut. A very good clean copy.         Buste af H.C. Andersen udført af Bing & Grøndahl efter Bissens model som han modellerede 1864 med Andersen som levende model. [Bust of Hans Christian Andersen, made by Bing & Grøndal after Bissen's model, which he modelled in 1864 with Andersen as a living model].

København, Bing & Grøndahl, 1865. H:27 cm. B:14 cm. D:13 cm. Andersen must have liked the bust himself, as he used it as a present for his closest friends. He ordered eight copies of it. By Andersen, the bust was called the "Bissen-Bingske Bust".After Andersen had modeled for Bissen, Bissen said "Our Lord had taken his time to create his head queer above that of most others." Bissen's bust must be said to display a very fine portrait of Andersen; There is more than exact likeness to it, there is also some of Andersen's soul and very nature in it

A Description of the Recently Discovered Petroleum Region in California with a Report on the Same by Professor Silliman

New York: Francis & Loutrel Printers 45 Maiden Lane February 1865 New York: Francis & Loutrel, Printers, 45 Maiden Lane, February, 1865. First edition of Silliman's Second Report on oil in California. 8vo. Large folding map of the "OJAI Ranch in Santa Barbara County ... Property of The California Petroleum Company," and one folding chart. iii, [1], 24 pp. Printed wrappers. Waterstained, maps creased, with one small tear. Streeter 2903; Giddens p. 167; Sabin 81051; Cowan 1933, p. 588 (in entry for 1864 issue: "Another report was made in 1865") . Silliman's reports on the future of California oil precipitated the nation's first real debate over the ethics of scientific consulting. Silliman's previous analysis of seep oil in Pennsylvania had launched an entire industry; now, as a consultant for the California Petroleum Company, Silliman painted a rosy picture of the future of petroleum in the Santa Barbara region, raising the hopes of speculators who already excited by the recent boom in Pennsylvania. State Geologist Josiah Dwight Whitney thought that Silliman's fee ($45,000) from the oil companies was prima facie evidence of fraud, and characterized Silliman himself as a mercenary and a disgrace to science. When it was determined that the seep oil samples Silliman had been testing were laced with kerosene from Pennsylvania, stock prices fell dramatically

Ueber verschiedene für die Anwendung bequeme Formen der Hauptgleichungen der mechanischen Wärmetheorie.[Zürich: Fäsi & Beer, 1865].

The true first edition (see below) of Clausius' introduction of the term 'entropy' and the culmination of his work on the second law of thermodynamics. Clausius is today regarded, alongside Sadi Carnot, as the founder of modern thermodynamics.<br/><br/> Clausius explains his introduction of the term 'entropy' as follows: "I propose to name the quantity <i>S</i> the entropy of the system, after the Greek word [&tau;&rho;&omicron;&pi;&eta; <i>trope</i>], the transformation. I have deliberately chosen the word entropy to be as similar as possible to the word energy: the two quantities to be named by these words are so closely related in physical significance that a certain similarity in their names appears to be appropriate." Clausius concludes the present paper with his now classic statement of the first and second laws of thermodynamics: 'Die Energie der Welt ist constant; die Entropie strebt einen Maximum zu.' ('The energy of the universe is constant; the entropy of the universe tends towards a maximum'). <br/><br/> "The beautiful symmetry of this statement... did not suffice to impose the [entropy] concept in early thermodynamics. Clausius himself preferred the now forgotten concept of disgregation, which he intuitively grasped as the dispersion of the molecules of a body... the leaders of British thermodynamics judged the entropy concept too abstract and rather reasoned in terms of available and dissipated energy, which directly referred to the human ability to exploit energy sources - and, for Thomson, to God's unwillingness to intervene in the created world. In their treatises on heat James Clerk Maxwell and his friend Peter Guthrie Tate cared so little about Clausius's entropy as to give an erroneous definition of it. <br/><br/> "French, German and American thermodynamicists were more receptive to this notion. In the 1870s, the engineer François Massieu discovered that the entropy function could be used to form thermodynamic potentials from which all the thermodynamic properties of a substance resulted by simple derivations; and the American Josiah Willard Gibbs founded the laws of chemical equilibrium on Clausius's entropy law. In the 1880s, Hermann von Helmholtz recovered similar laws... and his disciple Max Planck reformulated thermodynamics on the basis of the energy and entropy laws. By the end of the century, the entropy concept belonged to the standard equipment of well-educated physcists..." (Garrigol, pp. 4-5). <br/><br/> The present paper was presented to the <i>Naturforschenden Gesellschaft</i> of Zürich on 25th April, 1865 and published in July. It was then republished in the 1st August issue of <i>Annalen der Physik</i> (Bd. 125, No. 9, pp. 353-400). Although it is the <i>Annalen</i> issue that is referred to by most bibliographies (e.g. DSB), the present issue is the true first publication of this important paper. <br/><br/> See DSB III: 303-11 and O. Darrigol, "The origins of the entropy concept", Séminaire Poincaré 2 (2003), 1-12.. 8vo (196 x 130 mm), pp 1-59 in 'Vierteljahrsschrift der Naturforschenden Gesellschaft in Zürich', 10. Jahrgang, Erstes Heft, 1865. Extracted in original plain yellow wrappers, fine and clean throughout

A Dynamical Theory of the Electromagnetic Field. Received October 27, - Read December 8, 1864.

London, Taylor and Francis, 1865. 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions", Vol. 155. Title-page to volume 155. Pp. 459-512. Title-page with minor light browning at corners. Internally clean. A stamp on verso of title-page.. First printing of this fundamental paper, in which Maxwell unified the theory of light-waves, electricity, and magnetism in his spectacular laws of electromagnetism. The paper represents THE BIRTH OF ONE OF THE GREATEST DISCOVERIES IN THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE and the most SPECTACULAR TRIUMPH OF THE 19TH CENTURY - it had an enormous impact on science and technology. Working out a few simple equations that expressed all the varied phenomena of electricity and magnetism, Maxwell bound them indissolubly together, showing that electricity and magnetism could not exist in isolation. Maxwell's suggestion that electromagnetic waves could be generated in a laboratory was confirmed by Heinrich Hertz's in 1887 and laid the foundations for the later inventions of radio, television, and radar."Since Maxwell's time, Physical Reality has been thought of as represented by continuous fields...not capable of any mechanical interpretation. This change in the conception of Reality is the most profound and the most fruitful that physics has experienced since the time of Newton."(Albert Einstein in "James Clerk Maxwell" 1931)."James Clerk Maxwell (1831-79) succeeded in formulating Faraday's geometrical ideas in exact mathematical language. He became the founder of the electromagnetic field theory which described all electric and magnetic action as the consequence of eight partial differential equations of the first order, the celebrated "Maxwellian equations". These equations established the interrelation between two fundamental field vectors, the electric and the magnetic field strength, based on Faraday's experiments, but augmented by the 'displacement current' which was too small to be directly observable by the instruments available in his time - it was put in solely by Maxwell's ingenious intuition.....The Maxwellian theory gave Faraday's field ideas their full significance and became the most important accomplishment of nineteenth-century physics. We could not imagine the physics of our day without the Maxwellian theory, even if we know today that these equations describe the electric phenomena only in their macroscopic manifestations, but fail to account for the atomistic structure of electricity demonstrated by the existence of the electron and proton." (Cornelius Lanzos in "The Einstein Decade (1905-1915", p.71-72)."A generation later Einstein's work on relativity was founded directly upon Maxwell's electromagnetic theory; it was this that led him to equate Faraday with Galileo and Maxwell with Newton."         [Fotografier efter taflor, målade af H. M. Konung Carl XV]

Fotografie, Fr. Lamm, Stockholm. 1865-1868? Oblong folio. 28,5 x 35 cm. 23 albumen photographs mounted on heavy card board. Printed captions in swedish and french at each card board. 20th. century half cloth. Marbled board papers. Some wear to the binding. Boards a bit bent. Nice condition.. The album contains twentytwo photographs depicting oil paintings executed by king Carl XV. There is also a photo of a portrait depicting the king. In 1865 Lamm published the work "Fotografier efter taflor, målade af H. M. Konung Carl XV. Cahier I", containing 13 photographs. The present album contains all of them. It is unclear if any further parts were published. Since this album contains nine more photographs it is likely that at least one more part was in fact published. The work is not present in the "Swedish Royal Library" and, surprisingly, not in the "Bernadotte Library", the king´s private library. The only copy in the swedish library system is at "Konstfack" (Sweden´s main art school) containing nine photographs only (one doublet). All the "Konstfack" plates are present in this copy as well as in the first part of the work cited above. In 1866 Lamm was advertising to find paintings by Carl XV to reproduce in photography which suggests that the efforts were being made to publish a second part of the work, eventhough there is no evidence of a second part. Lamm was active from about 1862 to1868. Carl XV was a great art lover and a patron of the swedish art scene. He was obviously also an active painter in his own right. The album has Martin Carlssons code inscription at the back paste down "ssb5059=544-raix". The first section probably means "Stockholms stads bokauktion May 9th. 1950". The rest is unknown. Carlsson was a great print collector. He had one of the greatest Rembrandt print collections in the world and also a very large collection of Bernadotte material, which was aquired by the Royal Library after his death. He is also said to have been a forger of Rembrandt prints and using the collections at the National Museum of Fine Arts a bit to freely. The plates in this copy are: The king, Ulriksdal, Toorsebro Bruk, Upsala, Mälaren, Leckö, Ljusne Elf, Wermdön, Frötuna Kyrka, Vy från Bergslagen, Calles Klimp, Winterlandskap i Dalarne, Bäckaskog, Åminne, Lommaren, Isterdalen, Stördalshalsen, Sogn, Hardangerfjorden, Sagatjaur, Sahrasbraten, Fjellpartie i Norrige and Thelemarken. A rare set of photographs
